We really like to talk about the finer aspects of our nations' cultures when we make factbooks or forum posts so I have this question for all of you.

What's the trashiest media that is popular in your country? Real world examples would be reality TV or talk shows like Jerry Springer, movies that egregiously objectify women, or comedies that rely on racial stereotypes.

Regarding TV shows, there’s definitely something like a “Housewives of Eridanis” type deal. There’s also probably those goofy real estate shows, along with a variety of hunting/fishing themed reality series (think stuff like a Nordic Duck Dynasty or Deadliest Catch, although tbh that’s not too bad of a show).
There’s also a good amount of rather old offensive comedy movies, either intentionally or not. Many would probably make fun of Argeans and those in the South Mesder because I enjoy bullying Laeden. (Jk you’re the best <3)
There’s many of those trashy tabloids/newspapers as well that you can find in many big cities, stuff like NY Post or the Sun.

I am somewhat back!

There's a few lowbrow gazettes that are produced in each city that mostly focus on celebrity news and discourse. Most nation or even state wide publications tend to be a bit more serious. Some Velders would consider the Boers Monthly magazine to be trash, but it is regarded by a lot of people as a national heritage. Essientially, it covers the indepth details of the agroculture business that month with interviews from farmers, who being from rural areas tend to be not the most well spoken. It does however contain an immensely detailed breakdown of the sector.

In terms of tv, there is a show called "Ben Je Klaar/Are You Ready?" where host Anthony Spieler gives contestants ridiculous life situations to see how they would react. Bear in mind, in the past he used to do this by taking events from the contestants past or things they would tell him. It gave many contestants trauma and was heavily criticised. It has since been modified.

There are of course old movies and tv shows, playing off of negative portrayals of Alhuata people. These have become less popular in time.A very heavily controversial show ran from 2006-2008 with racist portrayals of Martyenikans, which was subsequently shut down by complaints. The early 2000s had a resurgence of the National Party which had these sort of effects.

By far the most popular are trashy tabloids and magazines that often talk about celebrities, politicians, and anyone in the public eye. So much so that even rural communities with no outlet store ship these publications in through the mail system.

Other than that, there are lots of niche, and short lived TV shows that generate a lot of buzz for a year or two before being canceled and replaced by a very similar show.
The most popular of these is the Nípwae Hotel & Tourism show officially called "The Hotel Wars" as part of the propaganda campaign to out compete independent hotels. The company trade marked the name as an attempt to capitalize on the public term for the propaganda campaigns of the same name. The show often involves individuals traveling between various hotels, motels, and hostels in the country and give "Honest Reviews for the Honest Traveler". Of course Nípwae hotels always seem to rank higher than independents. It also acts as an ad campaign abroad, and they even try to keep bringing back "Hotel Wars Abroad" and reviewing foreign hotels as well, saying of course the ones back home are better.

TV is full of rubbish, second-rate shows screaming about show business stars who clearly do not deserve such attention to themselves. I have never seen something on TV that would enlighten people, and not contribute to their degradation. It probably never happened there.
As for series and films, things are even worse here, although somewhere else. All of them are of extremely low quality, this is facilitated by corruption and the lack of competitors.

Tabloid "journalism" is likely alive and well in D&S, especially of the paparazzi type. Of particular note with respect to that is that there are three different and comingling information siloes in this space of media, one in Dutch, another in English, and yet another in French. In this context, it is expected to see the Dutch media deal with people closely associated with the west, the English particularly in the northern Orange River valley between Port Orange and Zwolle, and the French in the east.

Of that triad (which for the tabloid journals especially are probably owned by the same media conglomerate), each has their own brand of "reality content" of the vein as mentioned earlier. I can also imagine that political satire is a special black sheep since it so often plays up history with a severe political bent one way or another (typically in an antigovernmental direction), this would be particularly true of fiction set in the 2000s or 2010s, whereas series set in the 90s are seen as being higher brow thanks to the very common "villain" being some flavor of Fraternalist. Of course, the people lap all that stuff up anyways for one reason or another.

Another particular set are what I'm going to tentatively call "Fool's Gold Novels", based on the same idea as Dime Novels except in the modern construct they only cost One Guilder, which the coin of is gold-faced. Any degree of smut, violence, or other particularly low quality content gets shoved into these books and flood the market every quarter. Ironically, they have a strong fanbase among Millennial and Gen Z Dormill-Stiuraians, particularly those that follow the action genre of Fool's Gold, to the point where some of those novels, such as the "So serious it's ironic" military sci-fi series Auralian Knights, see more respectable publications or even breaches the mainstream altogether. These also play together with pulp magazines and comic books to make up the backbone of the Doraltic pulp fiction, even though most older Dormill-Stiuraians especially consider Fool's Gold to be such childish trite that if they had their way, they'd be banned from schools and libraries.

Due to radio still being a heavily subsidized industry, and the content standards being relatively unchanged from the 60s, Radio shows are still semi common throughout Balnik and and adjacent areas, especially with truckers, railway workers, and sailors. Of the most popular of programmes is Karl the Rat, popular around the Cinnigrad area. It details the daily life of the titular character Karl, who is a hypersexual, alcoholic, Smuggler Rat who evades the law and sells heavily price inflated psychedelic red truffle mushrooms. Programmes like this and other radio shows have evaded Balniki censorship guidelines due to the old criteria still being in place, and that government oversight can only affect music and talk programming, not drama, therefore allowing radio shows to circumvent Balniki censorship laws more than other media.

Kaumpirkan soap operas are notorious for their lower-quality, although they enjoy greater popularity with the older generations, who are used to the quality. Many "classics," such as Akāše and Mukur have given rise to actors that have since progressed to much more refined media. While improvements have been made, especially as television stations have begun to broadcast higher quality foreign dramas, even newer shows that have better production value still carry the reputation, though less deserved. Reality television has also quickly garnered a reputation, although it is much more limited as it is a foreign import. There are, however, some reality shows, such as Rural Life, that have enjoyed great popularity.

Tabloid media generally is more popular with younger consumers, due to its being based on the internet. Because of this, celebrity news spreads quickly and easily, and buoys regional celebrities to become national ones. To some extent, the government tolerates this, as it helps to promote peoples of all ethnic groups, no matter how trashy. Even so, the tabloids must be careful to avoid breaking restrictions imposed by the government to allow people their privacy, lest they are shut down. While growing, this kind of media still has a relatively small presence in Kaumpirko.

I think there is a strong culture of producing parody movies in Laeden, things like the Scary Movie series, or Fifty Shades of Black, or the other less known members of this genre (Not Another Teen Movie, Superhero Movie, Meet the Spartans, Vampires Suck, etc). So they'd produce a lot of parodies of foreign movies (yes, that includes the ones you guys submitted to the Harfleur Film Festival) and laugh about it. The movies would be of very low quality, almost amateurish (just like their real life counterparts) but still they'd be funny and that's what matters. Obviously, some would consider this a ''childish'' type of comedy, which wouldn't be entirely false, but still, other types of higher end comedies could still be found in other types of media (most notably in classical Laedenian literature, since some of the old guard authors had their own ''classy'' humour that might be more adequate to the tastes of artsy fartsy folk).

The Laedenian MTV would also have a very late night show called "Urgent!" every Sunday. It'd mockingly present itself as a serious news program, despite being the very opposite of it. The show would be presented by two anchors: Crayon, a tall and skinny black dude (of Martenyikan ascent) with a rastafari style and with unkempt hair and beard; and Gris, a big, old and fat guy that was a former vocalist of a mildly successful punk rock band. Those two would present ''news'', which obviously wouldn't be news at all. Every episode would include The Adventures of Beau the Bard, a guy that'd go out to public places and play his guitar while imporovising rhymes that would insult bypassers; The Interview with Père Paon, a guy dressed as a Catholic priest that would interview celebrities (while bizarrely speaking with a strong Rodavese accent) and, midway into the interview, claim they were posessed by demons and attempt to forcefully exorcise them; The Late Night Insight, where a group of three attractive women wearing provocative clothes would discuss recent news of politics, economy, law and international relation without having any sort of knowledge in any of those topics, thus making a fool of themselves while looking gorgeous; The Ouch!, which would mainly be a Jackass type of thing where stunts from the program would do stupid and dangerous thing to get hurt on purpose; and the Revoir, which would be at the end of the program and would basically consist in satirical sketches cracking jokes at the expense of politicians, celebrities and current day events.

Urgent! would be an extremely popular show among youths, even if older people might frown at it. It'd be a very wide combination of absurdities, offensive jokes and just general siliness. It'd be trashy but also very noteworthy, since they'd grown to such an infamy that they'd eventually even get away with doing things that would otherwise be considered crimes (like the Adventures of Beau the Bard). They'd also present a Laedenian version of the Golden Raspberry to the worst Laedenian movies and actors every year, and people would generally just accept them.

Laeden would also have a moderately successful rock band called "Najas", which would perform semi-professionally and realease singles from time to time. Their music can aptly be described as just pure vitriol and insults directed at celebrities, places, things and pretty much whataver. Imagine Eminem, but in a rock format. They'd be very creative and inventive at coming up with insults and curses, so that'd make them popular, because many of their lyrics would end up being incorporated into common parlance. Curiously, despite of their ''bad boy'' personas, they'd actually be pretty chill people and would just do their provocative music as a form of artistic statement.

I think it is no secret now that Roendavar's censorship laws are one of the loosest in the Western Isles (almost non-existent) and, coupled with one of the largest arts and entertainment sectors (and companies), you can expect all of those in Roendavarian media. What can be considered "trashy" shows have virtually become non-existent in Roendavar. Modern Roendavarian media is flooded with flashy, over-the-top, sleek, and ostentatious shows that is popular with the youth and the average consumer. The Roendavarian media industry is an entire factbook worth of information but, to constrain myself to the question, I would only highlight those that would be characterized as "trashy" or "low media".

Reality television has been a staple of Roendavarian TV and we are known for it. Emearnath Calthadenuril (Emerald Wives of Dociara) is our counterpart to the irl RHO-- . You can expect how it highlights the high life of some of Dociara's richest families, especially their matriarchs, with their lavish lifestyles and dramas with one another. Eldha Acsecheos (On the Beat) sheds a spotlight on Roendavar's intense music industry, which is often full of conflicts and fights. Shows like Calthrinael Aformaran (Pleasure Island), which is primarily filmed in Roendavar's premiere island resort of Lasdheris, and Carnathil v Cadhronos (CC or Hotel of Sin), are known for its unbridled display of romance (and more). Inside Felamoren is a show that focuses on a group of workers in Roendavar's infamous Felamoren District in Dociara, especially how difficult and how out-of-hand the underbelly of the City of Sin gets every night. While not entirely trashy, these shows can be jarring to consumers, especially to foreigners, but one might say that it is part of the appeal and how Roendavar has remained ahead in the industry.

Online media and entertainment have also been on the rise in Roendavar, primarily due to Stales Entertainment and its launch of the media platform Eldart, and has been a center of production of such content. Of course, we have no shortage of young adult shows, such as Aemantharis (Rebellion) and Eremanos (Control), highlight the increasingly pervasive uncontrollable culture of drugs, sex, and the like, as well as Roendavarian views on capitalism, consumerism, liberty, etc. that has taken root in much of Roendavar's youth. These shows are highly popular amongst the youth in TWI, with much of its consumer base located outside of the country. Foreign opinions of such has been divisive, with some praising Roendavarian media for its progressive and contrarian challenge to the global culture, tackling heavy issues such as discrimination, abuse, and others, while critics point out its promotion of perverse and garish culture on the youth and its hypocrisy in messaging, especially how mass media in Roendavar remains a heavily capitalistic venture and how sexual objectification is still present in Roendavarian shows.

With shows like these, you can pretty much expect the culture of media in Roendavar. Celebrities with no shortage of scandals, show business journalism that, sometimes, becomes heavily predatory (in terms of how it hounds people), very high standards and expectations when it comes to beauty and presentation, and an increasingly problematic line between actual progressive media and just plain perversion on the screen. It remains one of the few things in Roendavar that the government has failed to control and, instead, has chosen to foster and support.

There's a whole lot more, especially how I have not tackled literature in Roendavar (which, in itself, is a large thing throughout history) and other forms of media but I think you all get the point by now.

Trashy media in Costavozka? Well. That's going to be interesting. For movies, it would clearly have to be the cheesy action-romance war films that basically straight-out encourage needless death when there were obviously easy ways to get what was needed, win, and survive at the same time. It's not even dying for a cause. Think Viking-esque need to die on the battlefield, but with no explanation as to why except for "glory". Books would have to be Twilight-style romance novels, but without any of the fantasy elements. Also, make it more like Romeo and Juliett. Television? Obstacle course game shows, but with cheesy challenges. For example, a 100% not rigged climbing wall with boxing gloves on pistons that fire off at climbing challengers. That, and "reality" TV that are just pure drama, making fun of absolutely everyone in insulting ways (to the point when it's not even that funny), filled with overused jokes, but still funny enough were people keep watching even they know its garbage.

The trashiest form of media in Wellsia is the day time soap operas watched by the large numbers of stay at home wives. These follow a Machiavellian system of cunning and scheming, mixed with romance and sex. Many of them would be marked as soft porn in other countries.
