Does anyone know btw if there are flags of the Wake Island nations?

Is it weird that I feel proud of having coming with the "Karnali Sea" name?

Not at all, I'd say.

Ainslie, would it be possible to make it official and add the Karnali Sea name to the map? (If there is room for it? And if the procedure of naming geographical items on the map goes like this?)

Telegram me and I’ll see what I can do

That's an awfully hot coffee pot

Greetings,
I am fairly new to this game but find the concept of guiding a nation to be very intriguing.
Basically I want my nation to be a country guided by law, while remaining a high standard of political freedom. Aiming to be a New York Times Democracy really.
I am also quite active when it comes to building my nation through the dispatch and factbook option and I plan on doing so in the future as well.
I heard about the Western Isles through one very convincing recruitment telegram.

Hey, guys. This is Sallvatore here. Decided to change between nations.

Just started watching the Snyder version of Justice League, if I didn’t know better I would think it was a new movie.

You aren't. I'd say that the person(s) who came up with this possibility went that way already before you :)

Greetings again,
I struggle to understand were roleplay concerning international conflicts, debates, etc. is happening. With all the different forums and such I cant seem to find a good overview, where for example I would need to start building up diplomatic connections. I understand that in order for that you do need a spot on the map, but in preparation and also to get acquainted with such, I wanted to look up some prior roleplay conversations.
In conclusion, it would be great if someone where to quickly summarize where to find what about different topics, ranging from diplomatics to conflicts to legal disputes.
Also how regularly does roleplay happen? Is something happening daily or over the course of a week?
Thanks in advance.

Wow, your country is very authoritarian.

Roleplay Directory
of The Western Isles

....

The Western Isles is a region with a broad, complex and active role-play environment, which is centred on our map. To help you get acquainted and to keep you informed about the happenings of TWI, there are a number of resources created and updated for the benefit of map nations. This - the RP directory - is one of those resources and was an excellent dispatch run by Ostehaar for much longer than I have administrated it.

This dispatch lists active RPs, international organisations and collaboration threads that you may want to take a look at. Whilst I’ll keep an eye out for new threads, you can help me by letting me know about new RPs as they're opened and about changes to ongoing RPs. Please do so via TG or by tagging me in the RMB post in which you announce or publish your RP (make sure to include a link to the IC and OOC threads). These are threads that typically are restricted to members of The Western Isles so if you are not on the map yet or not in The Western Isles contact the RP manager/OP before you write anything in either the OOC or IC threads.

New to Role-Playing in The Western Isles?
I'd highly recommend you read this post written by The Macabees. It is very helpful and is instructive on what it is like to be an RPer in our region.

....Roleplays
....

Key:
The terms below indicate the status conditions of different roleplays (RPs) in the region.
  • 'Planning' - RPs that are not fully active yet or require constant coordination, and are still being discussed in the OOC thread. You may freely join the discussion.

  • 'Open' - RPs that require no formal application, and usually have no OOC thread. You are free to post in these RPs, but it is still recommended to inform the OP of your participation before doing so by telegram.

  • 'Semi-Open' - RPs that are open to all players but require application or some form of initial coordination with the OP. All communication should occur in the OOC thread that is relevant to the RP. You should only telegram the OP if you need clarification on a specific fact as you are writing an in-character post. Otherwise, all communication should happen on the out of character thread.

  • 'Closed' - RPs that are open to some players, as indicated by the OP or in the OOC thread. Never post in these IC threads of these roleplays without specific permission from the OP. You may freely post in the OOC thread.

THE WESTERN ISLES MAP DISPATCH

Rules

Read all of these and make sure you understand them before you send the required map application to Ainslie via telegram.

  1. The nation which you join the map with should be a member of the World Assembly.

  2. You must have a name that is realistic. If you were to put it in a list of nations on Earth, it should not seem out of place or strange compared to them. However, this does not mean that you are allowed to have the same name as a real life country on Earth or something extremely similar.

  3. You are only allowed one nation on the map. No puppets are allowed.

  4. You must have at least one factbook about your nation that proves that you are going to actively engage and develop your nation in-character

  5. You must post anywhere on the LinkNationStates forums. This means anywhere across the site that you are allowed to post on. Do not post on threads marked (IC) or [IC] or places where you otherwise would not be welcome.

  6. If you lodge a map application and do not log in for a while afterwards, you may not be added to the map.

  7. If you are on the map, you must either significantly edit a dispatch or factbook or post in an [IC]/(IC) or [OOC]/(OOC) forum that exclusively involves nations on the map pictured above. If you do not do this at least once every fourteen days, you may be removed from the map and will need to resubmit a map request in order to be placed back on.

  8. Our region reserves the right to refuse map applications from players or puppets of players who is an officer or holds a position in the regional government of another region on this website. However, in some circumstances, discretion may be used in order to allow people who fall into this category to join the map.

  9. For more rules, please refer to this dispatch.

    Standard Application for Map Spot

      Nation name:
How did you find the region/why did you choose The Western Isles:
How long have you been active on NationStates:
Is this nation a puppet or side project:
If you have ANY other accounts on nationstates.net other than this one, please list them here:
Do you plan on being active (participating in regional role-play)? Are there any particular interests you have?
Have you read and understood our introductory dispatch, "A Welcome and Introduction Dispatch for New Nations":
Have you posted at least once on the NationStates Forums?
Have you read, understood, and agree to the map rules located in the regional rules dispatch:
Where exactly do you want to be on the map (describe the location in relation to other nations' locations):
If that spot becomes no longer available, what is your second choice for location:

About TWI In-Character

The Western Isles, like many regions, exists in its own separate reality or plane of existence in order for members to reconcile their own histories with each other. We are Earth-based humans with Earth weapons and Earth culture, although we do not exist on the map of Earth itself. Although Earth's countries exist in our reality, we do not typically interact with them nor do they interact with us; we almost exclusively interact with only the nations in our region.

The Western Isles is very roughly 7000 miles long and 4000 miles wide (10 km by 10 km per pixel). We exist in a northern hemisphere, with the nations at the north typically experiencing colder climates and the nations at the south typically experiencing equatorial climates. If it helps, you can picture our map as being the area between Japan, the western American coast, the Aleutian islands, and Hawaii, although we do not actually exist in that realm. Nations are given free reign to decide their inner geography, so long as it does not bend too deep into unrealistic territory. Similarly, nations may decide their own resources or lack thereof, so long as it is kept reasonable and realistic. We are modern time, specifically current time, meaning that the real-life calendar day is the same as our role-play day.

The central island is named Argus; the large island to the northeast of Argus is called Gael. The island to the west of Argus is called Raedlon.

Bold Territories

What are they?
Bold territories are those little areas on the map circled or marked by black borders - their names are typically smaller and emboldened. They are portions of the map which are set aside with the sole purpose of being hubs for activity - not for the mere sake of having more land or getting something that you want. Rather, these are made normally to facilitate some sort of in character role-play. There are generally two types of bold territories - the larger, older and more traditional ones devoted to role-plays that are typically only overseen by one or two people. There is then the second category which is smaller and newer islands which are typically made with the view of having them change hands in character relatively quickly and are designed to be a proxy for wider tensions - whether this be diplomatic, economic or even in the sense of armed conflict.

In order to apply to get responsibility to out of character manage a bold territory not listed below, you should create a factbook and then post a link to it in this thread and talk about your intentions for the territory. If approved, you may then be considered as overseeing the territory.

Which ones exist, and what are they like?

  • Iersheno (Dispatch) | IC Disputed | OOC Managed by Kravato

    • Qualities: Militarised | Disputed | Tourist Mecca

    • Backstory: An area first settled by Vacrusians, it has become a contested territory both politically and ethnically. Conflict is a well established part of its history, though only recently a longstanding peace has been broken by increased hostility by both Vacrus and Kravato. Placed on an important trade route and strategically important location on the western side of South Argus, the island is a flashpoint that is only just starting to awaken yet again.

    • Ideal for: Conflict RP, Diplomatic RP

    • Important links: In The News

  • Romancia (Read Dispatch) | IC governed by independent government | OOC Managed by Baumes

    • Disputed | War-torn | Militarised

    • Backstory: Since their arrival to Baumes, the Romancians have constantly been bullied and harassed by the Baumish. Eventually, they founded the Kingdom of Romancia, but it won't be long until they were colonized by the Doraltics, and later the Baumish. But they've had enough. And after a long and bloody civil war, Romancia has finally succeeded in independence. Now war-torn and destroyed, Romancia must now rebuild itself and forge a new future.

    • Ideal for: Conflict RP, Diplomatic RP, Cultural RP

    • Important links: Baumish-Romancian Conflict OOC, In The News

  • Charbagnia (Read Dispatch) | IC Governed by an independent democratic government | OOC Managed by Dormill and Stiura

    • Qualities: Tax Haven | Tourist Mecca | Diplomatically Isolated | Multiethnic

    • Backstory: Caught between the imperial ambitions of nations both foreign and native to the Western Isles, Charbagnia is in some ways a multiethnic paradise and a tribute to tolerance and equality. However, decades of political mismanagement and international strife has constantly reopened the wounds of ethnic and sectarian conflict, preventing Charbagnia from fully healing and becoming a beacon for liberty and human rights in the Southern Sea. Now faced with a growing threat of terrorism armed with the weapons of a very recent war, a powder keg has been set under the Charbagnian nation, and it is up to the nations of the Southern Sea and beyond to band together and relieve the pressure, or else condemn them all to a new age of strife and death.

    • Ideal for: Political/Intrigue RP, Cultural RP, and News interactions

    • Important links: None applicable.

  • Faronna Islands (Dispatch not available) | IC occupied territory of Balnik | OOC Managed by Balnik

    • Qualities: Remote | Developing | Fascist | Sparsely inhabited

    • Backstory: The Faronna Islands were two Islands that were shared between Balnik and Roendavar under the 1983 Faronna Islands agreement that set the islands to be used as a nature reserve. The treaty expired and was not renewed. In 2019 surveys reported that the islands had an abundance of fossil fuels and was rich in resources. In 2020, faced with an imminent energy crisis, Balnik annexed the islands and began exploiting the islands and its resources

    • Ideal for: Diplomatic RP

    • Important links: ICJ Determination, In The News

  • Keverai (Read Dispatch) | IC Governed by an independent democratic government | OOC Managed by Ainslie

    • Qualities: Unequal | Unsettled | Capitalised Paradise | Crime Den

    • Backstory: Ever since its colonisation, Keverai has been an outward looking place - seeking to absorb the prosperity and the vibrancy that comes with a multicultural experience. This has exposed it to external problems such as war, social and income inequality, and large organised crime operations within the nation. Many of these conditions were made possible through the deregulation of the economy and the flow through effects it would have. Keverai’s first truly democratic government has had a lacklustre response to these which have very much fallen short of expectations. Now, the nation is completely exposed to the risk of disaster or further instability exacerbating the existing inequality and unrest.

    • Ideal for: Economic, Cultural and Diplomatic roleplays

    • Important links: Collaboration Thread, In The News, Recent History, Foreign Influences.

  • Norregan (Read Dispatch) | IC Governed by an independent democratic government | OOC Managed by Roendavar

    • Qualities: Isolationist | Absolutist | Traditionalist | Conservative

    • Backstory: The Norregan people came to the Wake Islands and settled around the Stakerenea Islands as early as 1000 BCE. There have been several theories of how they got there, the most plausible one being that the Norregan people are a sea-faring people from Argus. The Norregan eventually settled into small tribal communities, relying on fishing for much of their food. Around the 1600s, trade finally came to the islands from nearby Raedlon. As the world descended into wars for control, the people of Norregan began to become wary of their survival, especially as they saw the Sud and Atolla fall to foreign influence. In 1729, a tribal chieftain known as Ilinakara’Toatou Falakira, also known to the Norregan people as the Uniter (Karana), united the Stakerenea Islands, through the Gray War. The Ilinakara family would soon rule Norregan from then on as absolute monarchs, pursuing a traditional and isolationist policy and remaining guarded against the outside world. However, after the storm of 2021 that left the Wake Islands devastated, current Queen Ilinakara'Falini Okilanoa, has decided to loosen the nation's economic policies and has allowed increased foreign investment, albeit, under her severe absolute watch.

    • Ideal for: Economic, Cultural, and Diplomatic Roleplays and News interactions

    • Important links: The Rains RP, In The News

  • Sud (Read Dispatch) | IC Governed by an independent democratic government | OOC Managed by Solaryia

    • Qualities: Backwater | Developing | Enterprising | Unequal

    • Backstory: A confident democracy with a charismatic but politically-minded leader, Sud has long considered itself as the success story of the three Wake Island chains. Whilst it suffered to an extent from a stormfront which battered Atolla and Norregan, the disaster exposed the existing inequalities in Sudite society. Sud is the most open of the three nations, relying on international backing to maintain its confidence as an important middlepower within the Raedlon subregion. However, the reality for the Sudites is that the social issues which haunt them remain very prevalent and the same politcking that occurs in Norregan and Atolla is just as rife here.

    • Ideal for: Political/Intrigue RP, Economic RP and News interactions

    • Important links: The Rains RP, In The News

  • Atolla (Read Dispatch) | IC Governed by an independent democratic government | OOC Managed by Alteran Republics

    • Qualities: Liberal Conservative | Meritocratic | Democratic | Fledgling Capitalist | Altera Dependent

    • Backstory: Since first being 'discovered' by the fledgling Alteran Republics in the 1460's, the island nation would soon become a keystone in the formation of the Alteran Commonwealth several centuries later. Battered by regular storms and harsh weather, the island inhabitants of Atolla grew to become a hardy and resilient people. Combined with imported traits and a thirst for mercantilism, the Atollan people would become an island of shopkeepers, establishing strong trade links with its neighbours in Raedlon. For whatever reason, whether thanks to subtle social or economic changes, Atolla never truly blossomed as an island nation and would remain strongly dependent on its Alteran colonial masters. However, thanks to continued investment and a brief flirt with independence; Atolla formally gained independence in 2016 after a slim referendum victory. Despite this, the nation stands at a crossroads - do they use their new independence to cut off colonial ties and seek their own glory - or acknowledge their allies and seek the safety and comfort of a like-minded friend?

    • Backstory: Originally a disputed territory, the Sunset Isle never attracted much attention due to its apparent lack of relevant natural resources and to the extreme hostility of its native tribe, the Akari. The situation quickly changed when a team of illegal researchers discovered massive deposits of highly valuable resources on the island in 2021. This led to a military standout between Laeden and Martenyika that nearly evolved into a full scale armed conflict. Thankfully, both nations agreed to discuss the matter in an arbitration court, who ruled that the Akari and their traditional island should be respected and that foreigners should not approach or land there under any circumstance.

Initially a territory of the Kingdom of Tesselia in Ainslie, it was later sold to Uprea and over time, became colonised be several other states which often come and go. Today, Sawneeak Atoll is still largely disputed and borders are often still unofficial. However, it is clear that the area will continue to grow and the future of the archipelago is in the hands of the ruling governments.

The next city person who says "Oh, you're living in the countryside! That must be nice and quiet!" will receive a very stern look in return.

Nice; yes. Quiet; not so much. Every moment it doesn't rain or isn't night, neighbours compete each other who can make the most racket with their cars, motor cycles, lawn mowers, hedge trimmers, pressure washers, piston engines, cottle wrapers, forrage stoathers, hardanger fiddles, heisenberg compensators, and other machinery that they often don't know how to operate. My colleagues are amazed that I don't like working from home "At home you are not disturbed by colleagues; you can finish projects much easier!" Well yes, but no.

Is anyone planning on/currently using the Vanguard, Astute or Dreadnaught class of nuclear submarines?

And on that note, how about the Tide class (though I think Miklania was using that), Fort or Diligence class of supply ships?

The Doraltic submarines are domestic but I could import the supply ships. Bonus points for Ro-Ro ships or Amphibious Docks

No, I was planning on using US ships and subs

I have no planned amphibious docks as of yet. I had a Ro-Ro as a litoral strike vessel; but that's been retconned in favour of the aircraft carrier.

Overview

The United Commonwealths Navy (UCN) is Altera's principle naval warfare force. Although warships were used by the Alteran rulers from the early medieval period, the first major maritime engagements were fought in numerous overseas conflicts against the neighbouring nations tribes - primarily over the rights to the abundant fishing waters.

The modern United Commonwealths Navy traces its origins to the early 16th century, where the nation's fractured maritime forces were merged into a single entity. Prior to this, Altera's navy was controlled by a mixture of wealthy oligarchs, trader barons and mercenaries.

The Alteran Navy maintains a fleet of technologically sophisticated ships, including guided missile destroyers, frigates, mine-countermeasure vessels and patrol vessels. It is well known for their introduction and use of frigates equipped with the ill-fated SkyHook - an unique method of launching and capturing VTOL aircraft using a sophisticated automated crane.

As of December 2018, there are over 50 commissioned ships in the Alteran Navy, plus ships of the United Commonwealths Fleet Auxiliary (UCFA); there are also a number Merchant Navy ships available to the UCFA under a private finance initiative. The UCFA replenishes warships at sea, and augments the Alteran Navy's amphibious warfare capabilities through its four Costava-class landing ship vessels. It also works as a force multiplier for the navy, often doing patrols that frigates used to do.

Destroyers

In naval terminology, a destroyer is a fast, manoeuvrable, long-endurance warship intended to escort larger vessels in a fleet, convoy, or battle group and defend them against powerful short-range attackers. They make up the principle 'head' of any naval combat force and, without the presence of an aircraft carrier, are nominated as the lead vessel.

UCN Owen (D50), UCN Bailey (D551), UCN Gawne (D52), UCN Gragh (D53), UCN Rushton (D54), UCN Mason (D55)

Frigates

In naval terminology, the name 'frigate' is used to describe a seagoing escort ship intermediate in size between a corvette and a destroyer. In deployment and combat missions, frigates are usually used in a variety of roles; though mainly to supplement the destroyer's combat capability. In reference to its naming origins in the 17th to early 18th centuries, frigates use their speed, manoeuvrability and flexibility to carry out a variety of roles - namely scouting, escort and patrol roles.

Type-32 Adjutant Class Frigate Batch Two (2018 - )

UCN Radiance (P270), UCN Rapid (P271), UCN Rapture (P272), UCN Rebound (P273), UCN Revenge (P274)

Fleet Auxilliary

In naval terminology, auxiliary ships are not primary combatant vessels, though they may have some limited combat capacity, usually for purposes of self-defence. Auxiliary ships are extremely important for navies of all sizes because if they were not present the primary fleet vessels would be unsupported. Thus, virtually every navy maintains an extensive fleet of auxiliary ships.

Patrol and Counter-Mining

In naval terminology, a patrol boat (also referred to as a patrol craft, patrol ship, or patrol vessel) is a relatively small naval vessel generally designed for coastal defence, border security, or law enforcement. There are many designs for patrol boats, and they generally range in size. They may be operated by a nation's navy, coast guard, police, or customs, and may be intended for marine ("blue water"), estuarine ("green water"), or river ("brown water") environments.

A minehunter, also known as counter-mining ships, is a naval vessel that seeks, detects, and destroys individual naval mines. Minesweepers, on the other hand, clear mined areas as a whole, without prior detection of mines. A vessel that combines both of these roles is known as a mine countermeasures vessel (MCMV).

Type-18 Fontus Class Patrol Vessel (2005 - )

Type-12 Magnetism Class Counter-Mining Vessel (2001 - )
UCN Maiden (M120), UCN Methodical (M121), UCN Milestone (M122), UCN Minder (M123)

Aircraft Carriers

In naval terminology, an aircraft carrier is warship equipped with a large open deck for the taking off and landing of warplanes and with facilities to carry, service, and arm them. Prior to the Imperial War, few nations invested in the technology and considered it a complimentary vessel to any strike force. However, the Imperial War was the proving ground for the technology, placing itself as the centre of any modern strike force, able to project power further than - at the time - conventional munitions through a battleship or carrier.

The United Commonwealths is a strong believer in VTOL - Vertical Take-Off and Landing - technology. Through the introduction of the Kestrel and Condor fighters, aircraft carriers moved away from conventional catapult and arrestor cable technology to using STOL and VTOL aircraft; including a brief fling with SkyHook technology in the 1980s.

Type-75 Daedalus Class VTOL Strike Carrier (2008 - )
UCN Captivate (C750), UCN Catalyst (C751), UCN Challenge (C752)

Find out more about the 'Daedalus' Class.

Type-78 Ascendance Class Aircraft Carrier (2021 - )
UCN Valiant (V780)

Landing Platform Dock

In naval terminology, an amphibious transport dock, also called a landing platform dock (LPD), is an amphibious warfare ship, a warship that embarks, transports, and lands elements of a landing force for expeditionary warfare missions. Several navies currently operate this kind of ship. The ships are generally designed to transport troops into a war zone by sea, primarily using landing craft, although invariably they also have the capability to operate transport helicopters.

Costava Class Landing Platform Dock (1995 - )
UCN Stonecoast (A140), UCN Braedoncost (A141), UCN Lanercost (A142), UCN Darcmore (A143)

Submarines

In naval terminology, a submarine (or sub) is a watercraft capable of independent operation underwater. It differs from a submersible, which has more limited underwater capability. In Alteran use, the submarine has two primary class types: Attack and Defence. The Attack type is used to shadow and engage with enemy shipping, using its torpedoes, long range strike missiles or Frogmen special forces. The Defence type has one primary mission; to intercept ICBMs using its arsenal of RABI (Rowlands Anti-Ballistic Interceptor) missiles.

Astute Class Attack Submarine (2009 - )
