Blacks, through slavery, became the African American ethnicity we have today. They are not from Ghana or Algeria or any sort of west African anymore. Those identities were destroyed by the white slave holders. Therefore, comparing African Americans to the ethnicities that they descend from in anything more than skin pigmentation is inaccurate.

Whites just group all whites, typically western European, together for past segregation issues. As such, those are the labels we use now.

Which is exactly my point.

Cultures and languages are stable and better comparisons.

These black of US have roots in Africa but belong to the American nation due to Anglo-American culture and American English language.

They now have nothing in common with African nationalities aside from skin pigmentation.

These variations existed since god knows when; okay. But the ieas behind "race" are recent and political in nature.

The ideas behind racial classification are okay, even great, for US and some other nations - but not for everyone.

None of us have over 50 million pop. Why even bother using the US system for such low population figures?

Because people arent as interested in it as you are? It's like asking why not everyone goes into just as much depth about the military as mik does or as in depth about econ as menna does. Not everyone cares, it isnt critical for the nation building so long as you have an idea of what your people look like, and it doesnt add much to rp unless it's a nation like yours.

In the end it boils down to the fact that there are many places where you can draw lines, and you have to choose one. It is not practical for 99% of the world to choose to draw the line for their basic demographic survey at "scores".

Nice. I heard that game was a glitchy mess. I just got home from a double shift and by sheer will trying to write a news post.

It was probably glitchy at launch, but I’m having fun with it now.

At least this time, we all agreed that blacks and whites are races not ethnic groups

:P

That's good to hear. :)

Been playing since launch, not a glitch in sight. It's actually polished as f*ck. Not "Witcher 3" polished, but maybe Nintendo polished.

Bless Insominac. Aside Sunset Overdrive (a game I never played), they make really solid games.

You can totally feel the Infamous in there: both games had incredibly fun and fluid movement mechanics that made you not want to fast travel. It's great. The only thing I don't like are the skill trees: they're very shallow and only a few branches are actually useful.

It's not outdated - it's meaning hasn't really been superceded by another word... from what I've heard it's more the word has been used for that makes it less popular in academia.

All I want is to have some people stop using race and ethnic groups as synonyms.

Athara magarat wrote:All I want is to have some people stop using race and ethnic groups as synonyms.

That not going to happen, especially among Americans. The black race is fairly synonyms with the African-American ethnic group. Amerindians are considered both a race and ethnic group when they are neither. Many Americans think Africa and Asia are countries, while Indians are a separate group all together are just an extension of Arabs.
Among whites, especially in the northern US, their are ethnic groups in Irish-Americans, Italian-Americans, German-Americans, etc. In the South this rarely exists except as a means of ancestry. All Spanish speaking people, with the exception of Spaniards are Latinos and use to be considered a separate race, but have now been demoted to an ethnicity, no matter which country they came from. This is not a modern thing, but has been how the US has classified people since its founding.
