And there’ll be a niche industry for folks like you so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯.

But for logistics, expect all long haul trucks to be replaced by autos and short haul delivery to be replaced by drones.

Menna shuli wrote:People often think that about technologies that might put them out of work. There are stupid technologies that are developed, but self-driving vehicles are absolutely not one of them.

What am I supposed to do, driving is all I'm good at, and you think the truckers are gonna take that sh*t, it's not that easy.

Dormill and Stiura wrote:A Class 35 Electric might be useful for me. I’ve got the feeling that trains and ships will be among the cheapest and best ways to transport massive amounts of cargo within D&S.

Cool, I can make one with your company’s name and colour scheme. I’ll make a brief dispatch about it tomorrow.

Oturia wrote:What am I supposed to do, driving is all I'm good at, and you think the truckers are gonna take that sh*t, it's not that easy.

I’m going to assume you’re American like me, at which point I’d say either find your union representative and talk to them on the issue or find a technical school and retool yourself right quick.

If you’re not an American, the same is likely applicable but expect different results.

Thuzbekistan

Can you guys just tg me if you want to help the Oturian trucking industry.

Oturia wrote:What am I supposed to do, driving is all I'm good at, and you think the truckers are gonna take that sh*t, it's not that easy.

I don't think you understand how this works. First, they won't just fire all truckers. It'll be a slow process, starting with some big companies introducing a few automatic vehciles to start with. They'll expand that, and let attrition take away a lot of drivers. They'll stop hiring many new drivers. Then, when the numbers tip over to the point where it will be cheaper to start firing, they will. By that point, though, human drivers will already by the minority. There will still be smaller companies that use human drivers longer, but I'll bet by 2035 or 2040, that'll almost be over and done with.

If driving is all you're good at, I don't know what to tell you man. There will be other driving jobs: domestic services inside cities, delivery driving, movers, etc. But long-haul trucking...not so much. Fact of the matter is that people are replacable in a lot of areas involving routine, menial or physical tasks, and we are getting good at doing it. The trick isn't to try and hold onto the old ways with a death grip that will pull your arms from your sockets, but to learn how to control the slack so that you have a bit of extra work. If long-haul trucking is your only long term plan, it may not be a great one. But if you can find other areas within that sector to learn, especially as the switch-over starts to happen within the next decade, you'll stand in better shape than some of the more hard-headed people in the industry. Learn management skills, become a route planner, that sort of thing.

Agadar, Belle ilse en terre, and Thuzbekistan

I welcome self-driving cars with open arms. I would trust even the buggiest of driving software over the average human, because an unacceptably large portion of the populace is an absolute danger both to themselves and more importantly, others.

But there is a problem.

It will take even more time to fix that little bug, I'll be close to retirement by the time the purge starts.

I think you significantly underestimate how quickly technology develops and how quickly we can solve problems like that.

Oturia wrote:But there is a problem.

I suspect you aren't very forward thinking, considering Menna is talking in terms of decades here, not mere years.

Yes, at this moment, self driving cars (herein refereed to as 'autos' for simplicity) aren't entirely capable of completely replacing a human driver, the same way that a drone not that long ago was exclusively a fringe military technology, where it is now so ubiquitous that some companies are now using them to deliver stuff to their customers. This is the same fate as autos and any new technology, it will have its initial problems and be relegated to smaller tasks that are under constant human supervision in the event of a dangerous event. But give autos another 10 or 20 or 30 years, and they will largely replace humans in fields relevant to autos, I would expect that before I reach 50, maybe even 45, that if I ever find myself driving down the interstate, I will see large fully automated trucks hauling cargo at quite a clip, probably in their own particular lane since I am still driving.

So in your case, assuming you are a truck driver, you should also begin to think about what you intend to do in the future. If you want to stay in logistics, learn route planning and management, or whatever else could be useful. You should be able to figure out a way to find a new line of work when your current one is taken down by automation, same as it happened to people in Ford's plants, same as it will happen in the following generations to come.

In the words of a great survivalist: Improvise, Adapt, Overcome.

Menna shuli wrote:I think you significantly underestimate how quickly technology develops and how quickly we can solve problems like that.

I think you over estimate it, and your way to trusting to our future robot overlords.

Dormill and Stiura wrote:snip.

Not a trucker yet, but you think their will really be another job afterwards, I have no other skills.

Oturia wrote:I think you over estimate it, and your way to trusting to our future robot overlords.

I mean, I'm talking a period of 15 to 20 years here. Think about technology 15 or 20 years ago compared to what we have now. Also, Moore's Law has been holding incredibly true, so I think I'm correctly estimating technological growth here.

I am of the opinion that you should always assume that things will happen faster than you want them to. If you assume "not in my lifetime" you are probably going to get f*cked by progress. Personally, I prefer not to get f*cked, so I prep for the future. If I'm wrong, no skin off my nose. If I'm not, I get to be both secure AND smug.

Oturia wrote:Not a trucker yet, but you think their will really be another job afterwards, I have no other skills.

Then go online, or to an actual technical school, learn something new, and find a new career that fits what you want and learned.

I have my own personal qualms that has led me in a different direction, even though I am well aware of the shifting winds, but that doesn't mean I won't advocate for it. Especially in a case like yours where you are convinced (either rightly or not) that your only skill is driving. Let's be honest here about that, it's not a unique skill to anybody.

Oturia wrote:Not a trucker yet, but you think their will really be another job afterwards, I have no other skills.

Then learn other skills. People aren't video game characters where their abilities are set at character creation. Human development is a constant process, and you get to choose whether you stagnate or learn new things. If you like trucking and this scares you, find something WHILE you truck that is connected to the industry but won't be consumed by mechanization.

Every now and then, the Western Isles Office of Information gathers and publishes ranking lists of nations that have been exceptionally active on the regional message board during a certain time period. These ranking lists are called the 'The Western Isles Hot 100', and are presented in this dispatch. The ranking lists are generated using a LinkJava application made by Agadar.

I mean I aced history but I can't be a teacher, I suck at math and I have anger issues.

I won't get a self driving car mostly because I enjoy driving.

And also because I'm something of a Luddite.

But mostly because I like driving.

Oturia wrote:I mean I aced history but I can't be a teacher, I suck at math and I have anger issues.

Not all teachers need to know math. There are also other professions in history. You could work at a historic site or museum. You could be an archaeologist or anthropologist.

As for anger issues, the assumption that any such thing is permanent is limiting. If I let myself be limited by my emotional and mental issues, I'd be dead by my own hand.

We're not talking cars. We're talking long-haul trucking. I don't believe self-driving cars will be popular before the 2050s.
