Like Perseid it doesn't have to be a conflict in nature, however in my experience I've seen those draw the most attention. The are several other ideas you could explore as well, archeology, natural disasters on a cosmic scale, and diplomatic events that have some pop to them and aren't just parties are also viable options to consider also.
