State of the Legislature

Dear Comrades,

We entered the term of the 19th General Assembly with a very interesting lineup of MGAs. This included 4 MGAs retaining their position from the 18th GA, 2 cabinet members in the 1st Greylyn Cabinet and 1 Justice from the 18th Supreme Court. Taking into consideration the experienced GA lineup as well as the outstanding performance by the previous GA, there is most definitely a high expectation from Assemblians on this GA to perform well. Even with three of our MGAs taking up positions in the 1st Kavagrad Cabinet, I’m glad to say that this GA has lived up to its expectations. Throughout the course of the term, 14 pieces of legislation were passed, a number surpassed only by the 18th GA and equaled by the 16th GA. Out of the 14 pieces of legislation passed, 5 of them are constitution amendments, which breaks the previous record of 3 constitution amendments in a single term, an impressive feat considering how hard it is to find changes for the constitution. In addition to that, the 19th GA also saw, for the very first time in regional history, a legislative queue that was never empty. While there are other factors such as my own inefficiency as a Speaker, regional holidays, site events and the bulk of it being constitution amendments, a large part of the success goes to the people who enabled it to happen, which can largely be separated into three groups.

The first group of people that made the success possible are the legislators who constantly look for change and push for improvements to our laws. I personally feel like this is an underappreciated group as while they are what I consider to be the foundations of our region, building a strong constitution and law which allows our region to thrive, they often do not get the credit for it. Thus, I would like to thank all the legislators who have submitted legislature to the General Assembly for discussion, who can all be found right here:

The second group of people that is a huge part of this success are all the assemblians who took their time to read the amendments and vote in the polls. As more than a third of legislature this term were constitution amendments, a large part of the voting on legislature was done by assemblians. Without each assemblian diligently reading the various amendments and deliberating on them, at one point even having to vote on amendments for a period of around half a month, I would confidently say that this term would not have received the same amount of success.

The last group of people that I would like to thank are our MGAs. Our MGAs have worked tirelessly throughout this entire term to decide which legislature would be good for our region if passed. This term saw some rather contentious legislature such as Election Amendment (Separate Elections) which saw two vote switches that could decide the passage of the amendment. Our MGAs also oversaw reforms to the judicial branch of the government as well as several amendments to optimise our laws and improve the experience of being a citizen in TLA. We also oversaw two joke laws which spawned the Kavaist-Gnome-Lloberal-Koala-(insert all the other factions) debate. I'm sure all of you had fun either participating in this debate or just watching it from the sidelines (in all seriousness, for newer nations reading this and getting confused about what it is, it's basically a regional meme. Please don't vote on affiliations in the upcoming elections). I would like to thank Dyl, Nangka, New Samon, Sincadenas and Wascoitan on behalf of the region in making this GA term wonderful.

Looking towards the 20th General Assembly, I personally hope that the legislative momentum would continue and it would thrive in terms of the quantity and quality of legislature as it did in this GA and the previous. There are rumours of fresher faces who are planning to nominate in this upcoming election, and I'm glad that the region as a whole is starting to get more interested in the legislative. I do also feel like I have repeated this a lot but I cannot stress it enough that being a MGA is often the first government position that many politicians in TLA hold. In the census, a significant portion of assemblians expressed interest in participating in government, and the upcoming elections are a good way to get started. I hope that we will be able to see a competitive election for the next General Assembly and greater successes for the legislative branch of TLA in the future.

Unity in diversity!

Speaker Antinios

There seems to be a curious correlation between the number of telegrams sent out, and the % of people who read them/join TLA as a result. Not sure there's anything to that apart from coincidence, but it's sort of interesting to note.

📊 December 2020 general election 📊

As per the Election Act, the nomination period for the December 2020 general election is officially open! The positions available for nominations are:

  • Secretary - the leader of the Cabinet (the executive branch)

  • General Assembly (7 seats) - the legislative branch

Any World Assembly citizen may nominate for Secretary, while any electoral citizen (including Military Voting and Dual citizens) may nominate for the General Assembly, provided that they are not "concurrently holding an elected or appointed office, or holding direct power over the given office, in another region."

Individuals who would like to nominate may simply indicate as such with a post on this Regional Message Board. Nominations will be open for 72 hours. Best of luck to all running, and don't forget to publish a platform!

The General Assembly was set at 7 seats in accordance with the cube-root law, which states that the legislature's size should be the cube-root of the total number of electoral citizens, currently 276, which rounds up to the nearest integer of 7. This is an increase of one seat from the previous term.

I'm running for General Assembly!

Here's my campaign dispatch:
page=dispatch/id=1469277

In case some are still unaware, I would like to take this opportunity to confirm that I will not be running for re-election as Secretary. Best of luck to those that run, and I will offer whatever support I can to my successor, whoever they may be, after the election is over.

Unity in Diversity!

Secretary Kavagrad

I'm running for Secretary. I do have a platform that is a work-in-progress.

Comrades, it is time for a new light to shine on our region!

The region of the Leftist Assembly has been divided between the Gnomes and the Kavaists and straights control the region. All of the under Kavagrad, a senior member of the region. I promise as the self-described voice for the gays and new generation to attempt to heal our region and attempt to bring back our LGBTQ+ majority. I will try not to promise much and give myself too much to work for. My credentials are only two terms in the General Assembly, and ambassador to both the DSA and Gay.

Who am I?

I am New Samon, known as Samon in our regional discord. I have been in both the 18th and 19th General Assemblies, two of the highest rated. I have also been involved in Foreign Affairs as ambassador to both the Democratic Socialist Assembly- before the closure of course- and Gay. Political career aside, I have been involved in the NSLeft military (the Red Fleet) and Antifa and actively participated in antifascist raids.

Promises

World Assembly Recommendations

Although personally I care much about the World Assembly, I plan to reintroduce this for any WA member interested in the voting process, and will invite any discussion about the proposal. Discussion periods will be set before the voting period, and recommendations will come during.

The Opening of Embassies with Wintercrest.

The region of Wintercrest is a fellow leftist region, and is a promising region to establish these relations with. I understand Kavagrad was working towards this goal, and I am here to further our progress.

Work with the Region

I understand that previous secretaries have done the same and this is nothing new, but I will properly establish this as a goal. Any feedback shall be taken in consideration from the census or suggestion box. This also includes an attempt at inclusion of any members not in our Discord.

A Diverse Gnome-Kavaist Cabinet.

We cannot heal this divide without healing it within our government. This is more of joke promise, but we shall fulfill the revolution united no matter our allegiances.

The Gaytatorship!

Channeling the power of Lenin, I establish the gays to their former glory! As an asexual, my gay siblings shall retake their throne to represent the LGBT community. Gays, unite!

From the official New Samon Election Committee, be gay do crime!

Experienced Leadership, Revolutionary Outlook
Hello comrades, I'm Podria and I am be running for MGA this December.
Experienced Leadership

General Experience:
I've been on NationStates for just over two years at this point, all of this time spent in The Leftist Assembly. During this time I've always been highly involved in the community both on and off site, and consider this region to be a true family. During this time, I have served on The Red Fleet, NSLeft's R/D Military, on the NSLeft Regional, Gameplay, and Central Committees, as ambassador to The Internationale, and in general maintained an active and devoted member of The Leftist Assembly.
Legislative Experience:
During my tenure on NationStates, I have served in the General Assembly three terms, including one as Speaker and another as Deputy Speaker. During these terms, I was a part of the processing of over 20 bills, several of which I was co-author and/or signatory on. During my tenure as Speaker, I ran a highly efficient General Assembly, maintaining an up to date and accurate legislative queue, running a snappy voting process, and keeping the public well informed.
Executive Experience:
Also while in The Leftist Assembly, I have served in the past four cabinets under Llorens, Greylyn, and Kavagrad. From World Assembly Affairs to Vice Secretary to Minister of Roleplay, I have experience on how the cabinet and executive works and how to work with it. During my tenure in the cabinet I have learned much about the inner workings, history, and values that are most important in The Leftist Assembly, and intend to use these lessons I've learned and experience I've gained to guide myself as MGA.

Revolutionary Outlook

As your Member of the General Assembly, I will fight for the key tenants I have always fought for: community, democracy, transparency. I intend on running to become Speaker of the General Assembly during this term, and will run a snappy operation like I did during the 17th General Assembly. As Speaker I will also be working much more closely with other MGAs in the legislative process, lifting up and providing experience to the next generation of TLA's politicians. I will also be working with the Secretary, the Cabinet, and the Supreme Court to ensure that our government works as efficiently as possible. I will tirelessly work to ensure that a strong and tightly knit community will be fostered in the region, that our government works in a representative fashion for all Assemblians, and that all branches of government remain transparent.

If you would like Experienced Leadership and a Revolutionary Outlook in your MGA, then be sure to...

- Podria
Minister of Roleplay, MGA Candidate

As I have already been asked this question on discord, I'll post it here.

"So van in your manifesto you say you plan on making a secretary limitation amendment and a term limit amendment, could you clarify what these amendments will do?"

Yeah, definitely.

The Secretary Limitation amendment is basically a reaction to a Discord discussion about a Secretary theoretically appointing himself as every minister and only needing to get confirmed to be able to hold all the executive posts, and the amendment will directly disallow that.

The Term Limit amendment is about establishing a hard non-consecutive term limit for Secretaries, with my current idea being 4 terms (what Llorens managed to get; 1 whole year in office; or 2 times the consecutive limit)

Feel free to ask me any other question here, on Discord, or using the tellies!

TALAO FOR SECRETARY

Running under the platform of Talism: FAIL OR FAIL TRYING!

I promise, immediately upon entering office, to resign!

I have no other plans! I have no other goals! Vote for Talao and waste everybody's time!

After much thought, I have decided not to stand, due to being a non-discord citizen, and not really having any prepared policies. I will, however, make campaign logos for anyone who wants them.

Garbelia wrote:After much thought, I have decided not to stand, due to being a non-discord citizen, and not really having any prepared policies. I will, however, make campaign logos for anyone who wants them.

What about a campaign logo for one doomed to fail?

Could I join a campaign?

I am not giving an endorsement yet, but will do soon!

I am leaving this region, for some reasons. I have a simple question: why should I be banned from the discord server for one mistake I did in TCB's server? I did try numerous times to contact Ubertas to clarify that one of my friends had written that post regarding the cops on Discord, but sadly, all efforts went in vain. I am sorry folks.
Btw I am a leftist irl and I am committed in furthering the leftist cause . Bye!

Yongia wrote:Could I join a campaign?

Join the Gnomevolution, comrade! You still have time to nominate for MGA! (You will need to have Discord though if you wish to nominate because the GA’s activities are on Discord) if you’re interested, look through TLA’s Code of Laws and Constitution if you haven’t already.

Hi there Muscao,

I tried to get in touch you regarding your request for an appeal on Discord yesterday, but you had left the NSLeft server, and your DM settings therefore prevented me from contacting you.

I'm not going to comment further on your case publicly, but please get in contact via TG if you want to pursue this appeal. If not, good luck to you wherever you end up.

I have removed the thanksgiving flag in my nation because the people of Oscansa have overthrown Premier Ted Cruz. Oscansa retracts it's statements that "the only true proletariet is white, chrisitian, upper class Americans" or that "enforcing holiday social distancing is an act of war." Our bad, we where wrong on that one, but on every other policy Oscansa remains the only true leftists
