"He knows I'm here. We drop landed in his blizzard... Did you have to fight him out in the middle of the sea?" Galti asks rhetorically.
“Alright...so what is your plan, then? How are we going to fight Skagen and his forces?”
"We're going to head out onto the coast and fight the bastards. The ship we came in is above, hidden amidst the clouds. It can provide aerial support with its plasma guns. Nothing that would eviscerate a planet, but enough to quell the ghouls' ice magic and the dragons if it comes to that."
Galti sighs, forlorn and with heavy guilt.
"Not my favourite idea. I'd rather not lay a single finger on Ingos at all, but my men have wives and children waiting for them, and I would not rob them so brazenly."
Galti nods, perhaps not to Karzun but to himself, reassuring himself this is the right course of action.
"We'll keep observable proximity to the cave and retreat here after our initial attack. Fortifications will be set up by then, so we'll hold our ground out from the dragon's maw. Skagen, assuming he survives by this stage, won't waste time coming after us. He can't afford to, not with the debt come due and further an insult given. The Aptrgangr will pile in and be hammered by plasma fire at once. Assuming he proves me wrong and tries to starve us out, we have enough nano-assembled rations. Tastes awful but they're in extensive supply. Thanks to your misadventures while scouting, we should now also have an escape route if the worst becomes worse. I'll send men to check up and confirm it, and establish further structural supports. In any case, I want you to reclaim your energy before we strike."
The atmosphere in mission control on Nova Xanda was tense as the science ships Odyssey began firing up its sublight drives and moved into the Xandan Kuiper Belt. Mission control bases on the colonies of Achleung, Zantar, Reichden, and Dredan were coordinating the final check of the ship, to ensure that everything would work as planned in the first test flight. "This is the science ship Odyssey we have finished the final systems check. Test 1 ready. Activating Falten drive in 5, 4, 3, 2, 1," and with that, the ship disappeared from the Xandan system. A minute went by, 2 minutes, 3 minutes, 4 minutes, 5 minutes, suddenly, mission control received a QEC transmission. "This is the Odyssey, test complete. No damage." Loud cheering began all over Nova Xanda and its colonies, the first warp drive had been created and a new chapter opened up for the Technocracy of Nova Xanda
Karzûn picks up the plasma rifle he was given, inspecting its design.
“A large gamble...so be it. If your men can give me even 10% of my strength back, then I suppose I will fight. Or at the very least, I’ll kill as many ice demons as I can.”
These Are The Voyages: Episode Five, Part V
Scans of the plant indicate something very unusual about their biological makeup, that being they weren't plants at all. Instead they were some form of life form not previously cataloged, the thick sticky blue goo has some properties that would indicate it was used for synthesis of some kind, and yet the ooze continued to surge and flow from the torn vines as if they had a pulse. The skeletons outside the door show extensive signs that the vines had at one point likely digested the non-calcified matter... If that was the case, and the ship was thousands of years old, then how could the plants still be alive? Further scans would reveal to Tevron that they were not alone as they had previously thought, while the vines registered with life signs, five different bio-readings were also present within the ship, near the engine room... Each was very faint, yet stable.
A sudden screech of metal filled the air as the rear airlock door suddenly slammed shut, sealing the boarding party off from their pod and the only true means of escape. Their helmets, hooked in through the Enterprise's comm system and translation matrix, are able to pick up a rasping modulated voice, obviously automated.
"Airlock Power Levels are critical. Initiating 'Emergency Containment'." The voice was loud, echoing through the empty bowels of the ghostly derelict.
"Captain, this is Enter-......-ust saw the pod deta-......-ignal is weak. I say ag-.....-spond please!" The radio's in their helmets began to turn to static, until finally they went completely dead. The voice that had issued the warning earlier returned again, though this time they couldn't understand a word of what it said.
"Eikinshen Chaqu Ie aggov nopaag. Popaagvoz 'Iequti Haagpoti'." It announced in its somewhat more menacing sounding native language, without the aid of their translation matrix it's likely they would be unable to understand anything until contact could be reestablished.
"This isn't good!" One of the Engineers said sharply, looking between the door, Honra, the Captain, and the vines. "I've seen VR Sims like this before! It doesn't end too well for the engineer!"
"Keep your head, Ensign." Chief Hayes announced firmly before looking towards the Captain. "Ma'am, our best bet at getting our communication's back and opening that door is the engineering section, they'll likely have a secondary bridge there we can use." Captain Elnorin looked between the group under her command, Sub-Command A'Dukh and his Psi-Troopers appeared entirely unfazed.
"Ma'am, the cargohold may be our best bet." A'Dukh countered, looking briefly to the captain. "They intensified their structural integrity to that part of the ship for a reason, perhaps there's an escape ship there that they never reached? It could be far easier, assuming I'm correct."
"Looks like it's down to you and I, Lieutenant. What do you recommend?" The Captain asked while looking at Honra. "Do your scans indicate anything of note?"
Conversion ship launches 20 projectiles and try launching as Many Escape Pods in direction of The Atomic Age before Conversion Ship just barely passes by The Atomic Age getting heavily damaged as it hits shields before spinning off in some direction. 20 Projectiles are Gas Spires meant to knock out large urban cities with knockout Gas. 20 Projectile Spires smash into The Atomic Age Shields breaking open as Gas is released into space. Some of it being drawn to The Atomic Age due to its mass and it spreading out as Gas cloud is also drawn to Ra's Planet Gravity. 12 Escape Pods the few that were able to make it towards The Atomic Age proceed through Clowd and explode on The Atomic Age Shields.
The Conversion ship is out of action. But The Atomic Age Shields are likely heavily strained now.
The Carrier while out of action is on emergency power in a stable orbit. To recover later.
As for the 189 Fighters they begin to be losing numbers by 21 Drones but then they begin to loose connection with Drones one by one as Fighters crash into Drones. 12 Drones are left as 98 Fighters pass by Drones heading closer to The Atomic Age firing its Plasma guns and 8 missiles towards Atomic Age shield to damage it as 15 of 98 slam into shields Kamikaze style. The 83 begin to circle around Atomic Age firing at Shields waiting for shields to drop so they can complete there mission. Despite Communications being down the Fighters are able to coordinate via visual and from controls. As Xarku Drones piloting it are in the Hivemind as the Matriarch on the Planet Ra below tries to coordinate the Fighters directly and not from a Xarku Overlord Commander.
The 8 Xa'surt (Destroyers) form an tilted V Formation to one avoid the Conversion ship wreck going by. Second to form defense from Drones as they fire there Electrum-Plasma Cannons at the Drones concentrating on defending the group while lead takes brunt of possible damage.
Bar'kall (Battleship) has exited the Asteroid Belt and begins to slowly move forward towards Ra. Its Main Weapon, a Railgun begins to power as its secondary weapons being Large/Medium Electrum-Plasma Cannons begin to charge. Bar'kall (Battleship) is readying to engage in full on Combat. Preparing to fire a Railgun shot at The Atomic Age. As it tries to map in computers to account for Planet and Moon Gravity to try to prepare the most accurate shot against The Atomic Age.
Xarku Drone moves up to Admiral Xa'Huxta
Xarku Drone:"Admiral you have no idea how stressed it is to control this far out from planet. Failure will not be accepted."
Xarku Drone falls over as Admiral understands its the Matriarch communicating through Drones to try to understand herself and coordinate information.
Admiral Xa'Huxta points at The Atomic Age on ship's Computer and screams to Crew at the Bridge.
Admiral Xa'Huxta:"I want every gun we have on that pathetic ship!"
9 Re-supply Logistical Ships would be detected in 7 of the 10 Shipyards in Orbit of them. The 9 Logistical Ships begin to leave Shipyards and begin to try to meet up together to organize.
The Shipyards were built on Asteroids put into Orbit around Planet Ra. Able to work 4 ship sections per Shipyard. They have Asteroids put into orbit around Asteroid shipyard to where tiny mining Civilian ships from the Shipyard move over to mine up asteroids and bring material for Shipyard to smelt and make parts for said Ship Section they are working on. They are also trying to get communications back up.
"Rest." Galti commands him. "And don't fail me again."
The High General marches off deeper into the cave to oversee their makeshift defence, leaving Karzun to his own devices.
The Kauv’ok cyborg sets his new blaster down and awaits his repairs. He may not be able to regain most of his strength, but if he could just get his broken armor replaced, and his joints reinforced, he should be able to manage in the coming battle.
"That is most appreciated, your eminence. I only wish I had something as illustrious as a castle to offer in return." Boris said with a pleasant nod, his eyes again drifting towards the framed photograph on his desk. "I believe, however, that a facility beside the Roturnan Botanical Gardens is available... It's placement is more than suitable for diplomatic purposes, and I'm told the wind carries a rather fragrant air to it as a result of its proximity to the arboretum. The exchange of these embassies will be a step in the right direction... I look forward to working together towards peace through them."
Cunning Barbarity and the Nature of a Changing Threat...
Odonian Province, Roturna, T.C.C.C.P....
Catherine Morozko sighed faintly as she sat on the park bench, watching her son Dimitri as he played in the nearby grass. The city of Odonia had invited her as part of a symposium on the merits of 'Dedicated Exploration Vessels', something she and her husband were very much in favor of and a position she had made quite clear. The Galaxy and all its wonders needed to be explored, as a Finislandian that was something she held dear, and something about Boris that set him apart from many of his Soviet peers. Briefly she turned her attention away from Dimitri towards the bustling city that surrounded them, if it weren't for the towering structures she never would've known, as the park itself was surrounded by a noise reduction field. She smiled faintly as she leaned back on the bench, listening to the laughter wafting over the grassy hills.
Roturna was by no means a home she was used to, and it was still hard for her to get accustomed to the body guards that stood off out of the corner of her eye. It lacked the familiarity of Finislandia, the sky was a bit too blue, and the Roturnan's put a bit too much emphasis on the way they fried their local cuisine than they did on healthier choices... Then again, most Roturnan's were active enough to counter that increased intake. It wasn't to say the planet still wasn't home in its own way, it had its own charms. Despite the general paranoia and distrust that most Soviet's displayed towards outsiders, when she had become a Soviet citizen that distrust and paranoia had vanished... They had welcomed her with open arms. Like Boris, the Soviet people as a whole had more to them than what they displayed to the galaxy at large.
"First Councilwoman..." One of the bodyguards spoke up, walking towards her and breaking her from her thoughts. "We've been issued a recall order, ma'am. A credible threat has been made against you and your family." Catherine straightened at that, looking towards the burly protector before turning to Dimitri.
"Dimitri, honey, come here! We need get going!" She called out, standing from the bench as her son excitedly ran over. With a slight grunt she picked him up and looked towards the bodyguard. "Let's not tarry." The guard nodded and gestured for her to follow him, the other guards following behind them. The howl of engines cut through the air as an Albatross Drop Ship appeared from between a pair of nearby buildings and passed through the noise reduction field, kicking up dust and dirt as it hovered for a moment before setting down on the ground. Catherine and the guards boarded the vehicle without incident, and soon enough it had taken to the air.
"Central, this is Sentinel, package is secure." One of the guards announced over his commbead while Catherine walked to one of the seats and sat down, holding Dimitri as she looked out one of the windows. "Central... This is Sentinel, we have the package! Do you copy?" Catherine could see his expression shift to one of concern, quietly she set Dimitri down on the seat beside her and made sure to secure the straps as tightly as she could. He fidgeted but didn't complain, too enamored with the idea of flying in a real live Drop Ship. "Pilot, adjust your heading for the nearest Civil Security office."
"Aye, sir." The pilot replied, Catherine felt the drop ship change course as it flew through the towering buildings on either side. "Sir, we're reading no transmissions, outgoing or otherwise." The bodyguards looked among one another, their expressions stiffening as they approached a metal locker affixed to the wall. The lead officer tapped in a code, prompting the locker's door panel to slide open and reveal half a dozen EK-47s which he began to distribute to the other officers. "Sir! I'm getting something!"
"Patch it through!" The lead guard announced, looking at Catherine and her son briefly with concern evident on his face. She knew him rather well, a man by the name of Vitaly, he had been serving as her personal bodyguard since she had married Boris. It was rare for him to ever show a sign of emotional when on duty. "Drop us lower, below minimum flight level if possible! Security Authorization Vitaly Six-Five-Alpha-Baker!" Catherine felt the Drop ship descend, looking outside she could see they were barely fifteen feet above the ground, hugging the nap of the concrete covered planet. "An unregistered freighter managed to slip past the orbital security net, it's descending through the atmosphere as we speak... Headed this way. They've issued a general security lock down, the band was strong enough to pierce whatever's jamming our comms." He gripped the weapon slightly tighter. "The Ninth Interceptor Command will be on them in about fifteen seconds, don't worry."
"Sir, I'm getting a weapon's lock warning!" The pilot announced frantically from the cockpit, prompting Vitaly to snap towards him. "Scans indicate it's an energy weapon... Limited yield, likely something they came up with on their own." Catherine quietly looked out the window again, watching the buildings zipping past as the drop ship gained speed. "We should raise altitude and get out from between these buildings, it'll be like shooting fish in a barrel for them otherwise!"
"Alright, make your altitu-" The dropship was shaken by a tremendous shuddering jolt, Catherine turned towards Dimitri and held him tightly. They were too low to recover, too boxed in to maneuver. Dropping low like that was standard practice against kinetic weapons and missiles, the buildings on either side made it far more difficult to get a clean hit. With energy weapons, however, it was a different story. Even a ship based weapon of limited yield would play havoc with a Drop Ship's electircal systems, for the briefest of moments before it could adjust to the sudden overload it would drop like a stone... Which in this case made it far too late for the pilot to recover. The vessel slammed into the ground at tremendous speed, kicking up dust and debris.
No one who saw it go down had any idea just who was aboard, and none had any idea if there were any survivors...
