the start date is 1444
the way it works is an NS nation can choose a country
then they play it
if at any point, they don't want to play that nation anymore they can switch nations (however, you can't switch countries twice in 30 days)
even the countries that aren't played may fight wars

1444 is very late in the Middle Ages...I just looked it up
