It's taking a frustratingly long time for The Lunar Commune's economy to grow. I think part of it is that I'm being more careful to balance out growth and equality with the Commune than I was with Rothnia.

I'm literally begging the NS creator to explain to me how a response I chose solely to boost scientific advancement and I.T results in a 10% increase in trout farming. I don't even want trout farming. I'm not even remotely trying to increase my trout industry, and I never have been. But somehow my trout farming industry is my second highest stat. It's getting ridiculous. Literally everything I do increases trout farming. I'm on my hands & knees begging New Astrian citizens to stop eating so many goddamn fish. All I ask is for I.T to be my biggest sector. But trout farming just won't stop growing.

Update: The Lunar Commune's economy is no longer a basket case. Now, it's just struggling. It's still got a long way to go, but building a strong socialist economy up and bringing it out of poverty is very satisfying.

I do hope I won't destroy its environment in the process of growing its economy, but I was able to build a strong economy in Rothnia without ruining the environment.

Welcome to The Communist Bloc!!

Welcome to The Communist Bloc! You've probably come here either attracted by one of our recruitment telegrams, our leftist debates, or just the large population count under the socialist tag. No matter the reason, you are now home and you have now found your place! So what to do? I'm sure there are about a billion things rushing through your head right now, and no idea where to start in this massive place. So let's do a quick overview of the region first. The Communist Bloc (aka TCB or The Bloc) is a Pan-Left-wing region comprised of real-life socialists, communists, and anarchists. We welcome all people regardless of sexuality, identity, ethnic background, or religious creed.

The Bloc is a highly democratic region where anyone has every opportunity to join the community, bring their fresh new ideas, and contribute. We have roleplay, competitive elections, fun community activities, and even the ability for everyone to participate in making the law of the region through our directly democratic institutions. There's something for everyone here in TCB.

Newcomers Guide

So what should you do now that you've joined? Well, there's alot that's available:

  • Apply for Citizenship: Citizenship is your ultimate ticket here in The Bloc. Citizenship on the TCB forums allows you to vote in our regions directly democratic legislature, run for office, gain full access to the discord, and become a full-fledged member of the community. Anyone who wants to do more than answer issues should consider doing this.

  • LinkOur Regional Forum:
Our regional forum is where most of the political scene of the region takes place. It’s very important for anyone who’s interested in participating in our region's government to join the forums. Making an account is very easy and simple. Should there be any problems, Comrade Kethania should be contacted.

  • LinkOur Regional Discord: Our regional discord is where most of our casual interaction takes place. Much of the active portion of the region’s community spend most of their time here than on the RMB debating. It's highly recommended that comrades join if they want to become active.

  • Our Government: The Bloc’s Government runs on the principles of socialism, equality, collective leadership, direct democracy, and freedom. It has a unique four-branch system. With an executive handling governmental affairs (such as activities, immigration, interaction with other regions), a democratic legislature that makes laws for the region, an elected Judicial Branch to interpret the constitution and the law, and an Administrative Branch which moderates the discord and the forums and acts in a policing capacity. The most important principle, however, is that the World Assembly Delegate is not the leader here. The people, in fact, influence the appointment the WAD through the popular will.

How Can I Get Involved in Regional Government?

To get involved, it’s important that you have citizenship. Without it, you cannot any of the activities below. If you have not already, please refer to the links above for newcomers to get started. For newcomers or older members who want to become members of our community, it is highly recommended to begin by gaining citizenship on the forums, and then joining the discord and gaining full access using said citizenship. Following that, the best thing to do is to volunteer for a ministry and then make yourself known in the community by being active and interacting with people (don't be shy, we don't bite).

  • Volunteering for the Civil Service: The first thing that every citizen should try and do is apply for a ministry. The regions ministries are the main bodies that carry out the governmental work in the region. Depending on who you are, you can become a diplomat, a reporter for the news, a activities organizer, a roleplay manger, or assist on the legal team! You can volunteer Linkhere.

  • The Constitution: Anyone who wishes to become more active ought to eventually read the Constitution. Yes, I understand that it is long, personally, it took me a few tries to fully finish it. But it's wise to have knowledge of the highest law of the land.

  • Join the People's Revolutionary Air Force: What now? Do we have a military? To many, this may seem confusing, but it is perfectly normal for NS. The Communist Bloc is home to its very own military; the People's Revolutionary Air Force. It actively assists in raiding right-wing, fascist, and other reactionary regions in the game. Their goal is to eradicate them completely, whether that be through attacking them directly or by defending fellow left wing regions, and to remove the ability of fascists or other reactionaries to use this game as a real-life recruitment space for their toxic creed. LinkJoin the Discord now to find out more! If you feel like you can't dedicate a lot of time to the Bloc's military, but you still want to help, telegram First Minister New Astri, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Defense Krajzovda or Air Marshall Pan kath to be added onto the reserve roster. Read more about our reserve program here!

Other Useful Links Relating to TCB

Below are other links pertaining to the region and its interactions with other regions. It is recommended for people to look at these if they really want to get involved.

  • The RMB Rules: This is a must-read for any resident. The RMB Rules should be followed by everyone at all times. This ensures that the region's RMB is safe and reflective of our values.

  • Familiarize Yourself With Regional Law: As a Socialist Republic, The Communist Bloc is very dedicated to a democratic system with order and procedure to carry out government duties and policies more effectively. As a new member, feel free to familiarize yourself with a few basic documents.

  • The Index of Past WA Voting Recommendations: The Ministry of World Assembly Affairs maintains a list of all voting recommendations that have been issued so far. If you wanna become more active in the World Assembly, be sure to read through the list and analyze the different rationales given in the voting recommendations!

  • Anti-Fascism and Why We Fight: Above all, TCB is a left-wing region eternally committed to fighting fascism. Right-wing thought, especially fascism, is not tolerated within this region. We do not believe that freedom of speech extends to those who's sole purpose is built on racism, death, and dictatorship. TCB as an NSLeft member participates in the interregional military alliance of Antifa, and helps them to destroy the influence of fascists in the game.

  • The NSLeft: The Solidarity Pact of the NationStates Left, or the NSLeft, is the largest and most influential leftist alliance in the game. TCB is a member of this important alliance. Formed of only leftist regions comprised of real-life leftists, NSLeft seeks to further interregional leftist solidarity and create a united front against right-wing reactionaries.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

  • Someone is misbehaving on the RMB! What do I do?:
Please click this Big Report Button Thingie to send a telegram to our RMB moderators. You should include links to posts/pages containing improper material. Please also report to game moderators if applicable.

  • Why should I become a citizen?
Many reasons. Citizenship is like a switch from "just hanging around" to "being a full-fledged part of the region". Citizenship allows one to vote in elections, run for positions in government, participate in the discussion on forums (which is where the most of it happens), and all that good stuff. If you are not yet a citizen - you're missing out.

You may be suspicious of this whole bureaucracy, and wondering why can't we just allow the aforementioned freedoms to everyone. Well, there are good reasons. This world is dark and full of very very bad people doing all sorts of illegal and immoral activities. Citizenship allows us to prevent them from running for offices, spying on our region, etc. Unless you are one of those very very bad people, you have nothing to worry about.

If you have any more questions, please, feel free to telegram Solveneia, and he will answer to the best of his ability.

  • Who is actually in power in The Communist Bloc?

The Head of State is the First Minister(FM), who is elected by the citizenry in the First Round of Ministerial Elections.
The Head of Government is collectively the Council of Ministers(CoM), which is elected by the citizenry.
The Head of Legislature is the Speaker of the Legislative Committee, who is internally selected by the Committee, which itself is elected by the citizenry.
The Heads of Military are the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Defense(MoFAD), who is elected by the citizenry, and the Air Marshall, who is nominated by the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Defense and confirmed by the Council of Ministers.
The Head of Judiciary is the Chief Justice of the People's Tribunal, who is internally selected by the Judiciary, itself elected by the people.
The Head of Administration is the Head Administrator, internally selected by the Administrative Council, which also selects its own new members.
The Head of On-Site Administration is the World Assembly Delegate(WAD), who is appointed by the First Minister with the consent and approval of the Council of Ministers.
To see who currently occupies these roles and more, please view this dispatch..
All elections are conducted on LinkThe Communist Bloc forums.

  • Why is my application not being processed?
Sadly enough, processing applications take time and effort. It also gets pretty tedious after a while. A couple of days is a reasonable enough expectation of the processing time. We haven't forgotten about you, so just exercise patience.
Oh, and if after a week your application is not yet processed, then we probably have forgotten about you, so feel free to complain to Solveneia or another government official displayed in the regional page we will look at what can be done. If something is unclear, please, feel free to telegram Solveneia, or another government official.

Gaeguk Dress
개국복

DESIGNED: 2067-2068
ROLE: Official Empress Dress
NICKNAME: Royal White, Snow Dress
OWNER: Empress Hyeja Park
USED: 2068-Present

Gaeguk Dress

"A dress so beautiful even those looking upon us from Heavens above must be envious. I will forever cherish this wonderful gift, and never forget my obligations to the people so long as I am graced to wear it."

—Empress Hyeja Park upon receiving the Gaeguk Dress and wearing it for the first time, 2068.

The Gaeguk Dress (Hangul: 개국복) or literally "Dress of Country Founding", also known as Yeonbok Dress or "Dress of Enduring Prosperity", is the official royal attire of Empress Hyeja Park. Designed, tailored, and manufactured over a process lasting nearly two years, the dress and corresponding tiara includes extremely rare materials as 300 grams of natural harvested silk, 100 carats of diamonds (20 grams), 50 carats of rubies (10 grams), and even gold covered lace.

Empress Park's advisers first proposed some ideas on her dress as early as 2065, the same year as her coronation. Among the foreign dignitaries attending her coronation, almost all of them had fancy clothing and dresses of some sort, which Empress Park secretly envied greatly. However, due to poor conditions, Hyeja instead delayed the development of the dress until 2067 when the economic situation had improved somewhat. In May of 2067 she opened up the design competition, in which some of California's most capable fashion designers participated and submitted their proposals. Empress Park and Premier Charlotte had selected the three finalists by September of 2067, all of which were extremely different designs. The first design was a Korean-style dress based off of Princess attire from the Koryeo Era, and featured loose-fitting sleeves and skirts alongside an eye catching red and white pattern. The second design was a more modest modern dress in lavender complete with turquoise accessories such as a small clutch handbag and fashionable hat. The final design- which Charlotte and Hyeja both agreed was by far the most lovely- had heavy European influences, combining a white and pink scheme with an adorable tiara and crystal slippers.

After consultations with Charlotte and input from the design bureau, the last design was chosen and modified before being ordered. Some of the major modifications included a change in material: although the original dress was designed for use with silk, a lack of domestic silk production meant almost half of the silk was substituted for synthetic materials instead. Other changes were more cosmetic, such as replacing the dress's smooth edges with the frills that Hyeja personally preferred. Once those modifications were made and accepted, the final design was shipped to the Belov Design Bureau.

However, problems began almost immediately. Even though the dress's silk content had been cut in half from the original, 400 grams of silk still proved too much for the Californian fashion industry. In fact only 200 grams of silk were available for the project out of 400 grams requested. As a result, another 100 grams of silk were cut out from the dress, and the remaining 100 grams deficit could only be imported from the People's Republic of Korea. Even when this material was available, sewing the dress still proved immensely difficult. The dress is extremely thin for purposes of weight reduction and comfort, yet must also be mostly opaque. Finding a way to assemble only 600 grams of material into such an item required considerable designing and modeling before at last a genius solution was found from the natural world. Taking inspiration from insects, Charlotte suggested using honeycomb structures to limit the use of material, while interweaving silk with traces of denser material in each honeycomb, thus solving the final problem with the dress. Come the first snowfall of 2067, the dress's production problems had been smoothed out and it was ready for an on time presentation in May of 2068.

Proceeding in parallel with the dress's design were those of the tiara and slippers. Unfortunately, the dress was not the only part giving designers headaches. The tiara had to look and feel substantial while remaining lightweight, while the slippers needed to be easy to walk in and stand on for substantial periods of time during official functions, no small feat given their combined mass was to be no more than 700 grams. Belov Design Bureau's solution was to incorporate transparent gel pads within each slipper, allowing for substantial increases in comfort while also being discrete. However, doing so would violate Hyeja's original request to use traditional handcrafted methods only for manufacturing the entire outfit, since manual precision would not be enough for this procedure. Fortunately, Empress Park signed off on using machine manufacturing for this step alone, and the rest of the production process was finished without incident.

Slipper, tiara, and dress were unveiled for Hyeja's inspection before the beginning of April rains in 2068. They were tested, fitted, and adjusted one last time before the official debut in 2068. On 1st of May, 2068, Empress Park's third coronation anniversary featured her wearing this impressive dress for the first time, forever leaving her mark on the pages of fashion magazines and news websites.

Revolutionary Scarf

DESIGNED: 2051 (current edition)
ROLE: Part of her Young Pioneers uniform
NICKNAME: Red Scarf
OWNER: Premier Charlotte Kato
USED: 2053-2057 (Uniform)
2057-Present (Ceremonial)

Red Scarf of the Social-Democratic Party United Young Pioneers League

"I, Charlotte Kato, in presence of my comrades, hereby voluntarily join the Social-Democratic Party United Young Pioneers League! I solemnly promise to study the revolutionary cause, to place my full effort into betterment of our society, to follow the directives of the Social-Democratic Party, and to always be prepared for the defense of our ideals and motherland!"

—Charlotte Kato moments before she joined the Social-Democratic Party of Cascadia United Young Pioneers League, 2053

Charlotte Kato followed her older sister's footsteps and joined the SDP's United Young Pioneers as soon as she was eligible: her fourteenth birthday. Once she had finished with her solemn oath and promise, one of her seniors tied this ribbon on her neck, symbolising that she had become one of them. Charlotte later wrote in her journal that it was "A moment that somehow stretched into an eternity when I realised everything I had experienced on the long, winding road towards this accomplishment."

Joining the United Young Pioneers was arguably the most consequential move of her schooling years. Through her participation in various camps and activities, she was able to learn more about revolutionary theory, history, and figures, as well as make connections with individuals who would later introduce her to politics. By the time she exited the United Young Pioneers after reaching adulthood in 2057, she had been promoted five times to "Provincial Leader of the United Young Pioneers in British Columbia" for her honourable behaviour, cooperation with peers, and activities in support of the revolution including her development of the SD-13.

During all this time, she wore the same humble red scarf as any other United Young Pioneer member: a light, rather small handkerchief which was part of her uniform alongside a white shirt and dark blue skirt. Today, Charlotte's scarf usually remains unused except for when she attends entrance ceremonies for a new group of children aiming to join the greatest group for the smallest of revolutionary heroes. Even so, the spirit of her time in the United Young Pioneers stays near and dear to her: "Always ready!"

According to my sources this problem has persisted for quite a long time and only affects a relatively small minority of people.

Also, I see that the resolution to repeal Northern Borland's commendation is up for vote. We should vote for it. Afterward, we should draft a resolution to condemn them.

Also, the previous security council resolution was one to liberate a region called the Embassy. What do liberation resolutions do?

Hey guys. I know some people might think that they are the same, but apparently they are not as both sides constantly denounce and hate the other. Anyway, which one is worse. The oppressive and not even successful capitalism or the bootlicking bigoted fascism. Which ideology is worse to humanity and a bigger threat to the worker's revolution.

I don't really know about saying that fascists and capitalists constantly denounce each other. That doesn't sound particularly right to me. The words mean different things, but I get the feeling there's some overlap.

Many fascist parties are anti-capitalist and offer no upward movement either socially or economically. While capitalism is about 3% less awful. It offers more 'freedom' to people but to only those at the top. Plus, every once blue moon it does lift 1 person out of poverty. But you are right, there is an overlap. It is just that it is very small. Both only allow freedom to those at the top.

East Uyghurstan has requested the help of it's allies, included Swedenirl1, Rothnia and the Neo japanese state itself. Whispers that come from dark and shady rooms. Murmurings of debates and plans that echo throughout chambers and corridors. A catgirl has heard it all. A catgirl has heard of the chaos and destruction that is occurring in Neo japanese state.

The catgirl is drinking coffee. She lays down the coffee mug in the table. A girl wearing a schoolgirl uniform entered the room. She took off her clothes slowly, went closer and closer to the catgirl, laid her two hands on her back and said “I received the intelligence briefings that came from the Hall of External Information this morning”. After giving the papers she left.

The catgirl read laboriously the papers and mentally took notes. She read that “Anonymous sources within the state apparatus of Neo japanese state inform of rumors of a potential internal premeditated “socialist coup””. The catgirl doubted this at first, and cannot prove the veracity of this fact.

She wrote a letter to a certain Neo Japanese Statean diplomat on talks of either an internal meeting between rank-and-file members of the Neo Japanese Statean diplomatic apparatus and the Feyris Council of Foreign Relations, or either extended diplomatic communiques on both sides, with emphasis of course that the Neo Japanese Statean side be composed of rank-and-file diplomatic staff. The purpose of such exchange would be to explain and elucidate things, know some more and if necessary, take a course of action. The catgirl of course added “Be discreet”.

A Coup before Winter:

Darwin called his Supreme General of the Neo Japanese Armed Forces, Jose Moro Hasijima. Darwin asked if he would participate in a coup. After a long moment of deep thought, Jose accepted the proposal. He is know in the office with the representatives of New Astri and East uyghurstan. Darwin writes to Feyrisshire representative that the former option will be needed for this meeting. Darwin also writes to Eskostan to come immediately, regardless if Swedenirl1 does not send a representative. He knows that time is running out. 14 thousand more Neoreactionaries have invaded East uyghurstan towns, effectively overwhelming the armed forces. They have begun exploiting and killing any non-white citizen they deemed inferior to them. Effectively turning every town into concentration camps. Meanwhile, the left-wing nationalists in East uyghurstan are instead only interesting are marching to the captial and setting it on fire. But they are continually pushed back enemy forces.

After destroying every last ship and soldier of Swedenirl1, they left-wing nationalist then began fighting the Rothnia forces, even winning many battles against them but have been slowed down after the arrival of 140 thousand Eskostan troops and weapons. Still, it is only a matter of time until more citizens join the various rebels and militias, at that point, the Neo japanese state will die. Darwin only has 1 month to successfully commit to his coup before the entire county dies in fire and corruption. He has the backing of the military and over 75% of the population still supports him. Will that be enough time and support?

Whistleblower Protection Act

Recommendation:

Vote FOR

Overview
This resolution aims to coherently provide legal protections for whistleblowers.

A summary of the resolution is: Whistleblowers cannot be penalized for disseminating info about any government project, for the dissemination of financial info of government officials or entities' financial documents, for the publication of evidence of crime and cannot be tried for libel, slander or defamation unless the information is proven to be "demonstrably false".

Recommendation
The protection of whistleblowers from retaliation can be a boon in the progressive workers' struggle, as more often than not, whistleblowers expose the reality of wage exploitation by the bourgeoisie. This can also help socialist revolutions and can benefit a Cultural Revolution, as workers are now supported in exposing the oppression of landlords, bourgeoisie, bosses and bourgeoisie politicians through whistleblower protection, without fear of retaliation. This resolution can also contribute in the exposition of crimes and oppression made by imperialism, for example, through whistleblowers exposing war crimes or nefarious agendas made by the imperialist.

For these reasons, the Communist Bloc's Ministry of World Assembly Affairs recommends voting FOR the General Assembly Resolution under vote "Whistleblower Protection Act".

Ridiculous results like that are why I constantly advertise the RDP. Nothing like an issue result cheatsheet to keep your stats from randomly tanking.

How to Use the Issue Guide!

Greetings Comrades, and congratulations on taking the first steps to developing not only your nation, but the Bloc as a whole!

This guide will show you the basics of the issue results guide and explain how to look for statistics to improve!

Step One: Load the following link in a new tab in your browser. LinkIssue Results. You should arrive at a page that looks like this:

Step Two: Go to your nation's Issues Page. You will see all the issues currently available to your nation. Each issue will have a name, as well as a number. We'll use this number in the next step.

Step Three: Choose an issue you'd like to see the results and statistics for. In this example, we're gonna pick the first issue available, "Bait and Switch." Now find the issue number for lookup. It can be found to the right of an issue name and looks like "Vol 32, No. 591." For our purposes, only the number is important.

Step Four: Jump back over to the tab with the Issues Results site, and scroll down the list until you find the name and number that matches the issue you've chosen. Click that link. You can also use Ctrl (or Cmd) + F to search for the issue name and number to make it easier on the eyes, and cut down on scrolling!

Step Five: You should now see a page with three columns. The first column contains each of the possible responses to the issue. The second column details the range of statistics change from choosing that response. This is presented as a range of possible value changes, alongside an average. The third column contains how many times that response has changed a particular stat. Higher response numbers indicate generally more accurate average statistics changes.

Step Six: Choose a statistic you'd like to improve. This can either be your own preference, or a target set by the Regional Development Program. In this example, we're aiming to improve our nations Agriculture stat. Scroll down the list of statistics changes for the first response to find the effects on agriculture. In this example, the result from the first option is seen in the picture below!

Step Seven: Repeat Step Six for each possible response for the issue. In this example, we can see that the other option is likely to reduce the Agriculture score.

Step Eight: Choose the issue response that is likely to give the effect you want, and take a look at the results! In this example, it's the first response! However when examining the statistics changes, we can see our Agriculture stat was actually unaffected, but our Trout Fishing Industry grew by 35%!

Some Notes: As we've just seen, the guide isn't 100% accurate and only presents a general view of how different responses will change your nation. As a result, the effects of any one result may not be what you were hoping for. Don't lose hope! Any losses can be recovered, and the guide presents a useful tool for comrades to start shaping their nations!
Additionally, NationStates Issues have an overall normalising effect on statistics, generally bringing them closer to average. This means nations with high scores in a particular statistic are likely to suffer greater declines in score values than rises, and vice-versa for nations with low scores. Keep this in mind when choosing your options!

That's the guide! Thanks so much for reading, and hopefully this was of some help to you! Keep your eyes out for news related to Regional Development, and if you have any questions, please feel free to get in touch!

This Day in History
By Theria Han

Happy Friday! Hope your weekend will start off great! Here is "This Day in History" for February 19!

On this day in 1847, the first rescuers reach surviving members of the Donner Party, a group of California-bound emigrants stranded by snow in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. In the summer of 1846, in the midst of a Western-bound fever sweeping the United States, 89 people—including 31 members of the Donner and Reed families—set out in a wagon train from Springfield, Illinois. After arriving at Fort Bridger, Wyoming, the emigrants decided to avoid the usual route and try a new trail recently blazed by California promoter Lansford Hastings, the so-called “Hastings Cutoff.” After electing George Donner as their captain, the party departed Fort Bridger in mid-July. The shortcut was nothing of the sort: It set the Donner Party back nearly three weeks and cost them much-needed supplies. After suffering great hardships in the Wasatch Mountains, the Great Salt Lake Desert, and along the Humboldt River, they finally reached the Sierra Nevada Mountains in early October. Despite the lateness of the season, the emigrants continued to press on, and on October 28 they camped at Truckee Lake, located in the high mountains 21 kilometers northwest of Lake Tahoe. Overnight, an early winter storm blanketed the ground with snow, blocking the mountain pass and trapping the Donner Party. Most of the group stayed near the lake–now known as Donner Lake–while the Donner family and others made camp six miles away at Alder Creek. Building makeshift tents out of their wagons and killing their oxen for food, they hoped for a thaw that never came. Fifteen of the stronger emigrants, later known as the Forlorn Hope, set out west on snowshoes for Sutter’s Fort on December 16. Three weeks later, after harsh weather and lack of supplies killed several of the expedition and forced the others to resort to cannibalism, seven survivors reached a Native American village. News of the stranded Donner Party traveled fast to Sutter’s Fort, and a rescue party set out on January 31. Arriving at Donner Lake 20 days later, they found the camp completely snowbound and the surviving emigrants delirious with relief at their arrival. Rescuers fed the starving group as well as they could and then began evacuating them. Three more rescue parties arrived to help, but the return to Sutter’s Fort proved equally harrowing, and the last survivors didn’t reach safety until late April. Of the 89 original members of the Donner Party, only 45 reached California. (US History)

Also on this day in 1910, the Philadelphia Rapid Transit Company (RTC) fired 173 union members, resulting in a series of escalating labor actions that culminated in a city-wide general strike. RTC fired the workers "for the good of the service" and hired replacement workers from New York City. Immediately after the firings, the union leadership ordered the strike, taking their respective trolley cars off the streets effective at 1:00 that afternoon. In the following days, mobs of workers destroyed trolley property. A crowd of 2,000 seized a trolley set it on fire. Another crowd of 5,000 seized a crew working a trolley and beat them in the street. A bomb threat in Germantown was disregarded until dynamite was loaded onto the tracks by a mob of 2,000. With the union threatening a general strike to hobble the city if strikebreakers were brought in, RTC brought in 600 strikebreakers, while denying they had done so. When the National Guard entered the city to provide protection for RTC, members of other unions throughout the city saw this as a clear signal that the city and state governments were uniting in favor of the companies against the unions and the entire city began a general strike. The tactic was successful and RTC eventually agreed to a wage increase, the re-hiring of strikers within three months, and mediation of the initial 173 union-targeted firings. (Labor Strikes)

32 years, in 1942, President Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9066, authorizing the Secretary of War to deem certain areas "military zones", leading directly to the internment of Japanese, German, and Italian Americans in concentration camps. By declaring wide swaths of domestic territory as "military zones", the state could provide legal justification for forcibly removing people deemed a threat from them. Using a broad interpretation of Executive Order 9066, Lieutenant General John L. DeWitt issued orders declaring areas of the western United States as zones of exclusion under the Executive Order. As a result, approximately 112,000 men, women, and children of Japanese ancestry were evicted from the West Coast of the United States and held in American concentration camps and other confinement sites across the country. Americans of Italian and German ancestry were also targeted by these restrictions, including internment. 11,000 people of German ancestry were interned, as were 3,000 people of Italian ancestry, along with some Jewish refugees. It wasn't until 1990 that surviving internees began to receive individual redress payments and a letter of apology. (World War II)

And finally, The Feminine Mystique, a book by Betty Friedan, which is widely credited with sparking the beginning of second-wave feminism in the United States, was published on this day in 1963. In 1957, Friedan was asked to conduct a survey of her former Smith College classmates for their 15th-anniversary reunion; the results, in which she found that many of them were unhappy with their lives as housewives, prompted her to begin research for The Feminine Mystique, conducting interviews with other suburban housewives, as well as researching psychology, media, and advertising. She originally intended to create an article on the topic, not a book, but no magazine would publish her article. In 1964, The Feminine Mystique became a bestselling nonfiction book with over one million copies sold. In the book, Friedan challenged the widely shared belief in the 1950s that "fulfillment as a woman had only one definition for American women after 1949—the housewife-mother." The phrase "feminine mystique" was created by Friedan to show the assumptions that women would be fulfilled from their housework, marriage, sexual lives, and children. It was said that women, who were actually feminine, should not have wanted to work, get an education, or have political opinions. Friedan wanted to prove that women were unsatisfied but could not voice their feelings. (Feminist Movements)
