No water, no cable, no internet here in NewAustin. TTL for heat and power. 6-8 inches of snow not as much fun as expected. Would trade it for a running faucet.

We have some freezing rain, but at the moment that's it. Driveway is nice and slippery though. Took the recycling down to the curb and almost made it back to the garage door before physics sent me sliding.

Apparently, President Trump running 2-0 on impeachment acquittals is upsetting House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to no end. I just heard Nancy is calling for a 9-11 style commission on President Trump.

How long are that twit and the rest of the never to be sufficiently damned Democrats going to be wasting the taxpayer's money on this crap? Kind of makes one wonder what the Democrats are afraid of.

(I wonder if President Trump finds it as funny as I do that he is still living rent free in their heads.)

6-8 inches of snow in Austin? The city is going to come to a standstill and stay that way until spring.

Mardi Gras

It’s Mardi Gras time, arguably one the best celebrations in the world. It stretches from Twelfth Night (the last night of Christmas) all the way until Ash Wednesday. Mardi Gras is French for “Fat Tuesday” to reflect the practice of eating rich, fatty foods before the ritual fasting of the Lenten season. It’s also a time to bring out those colorful beads and masks and party! This celebration goes on in many parts of the world in various forms. So get out there and join the Mardi Gras celebrations on February 16, and party with the world!

MARDI GRAS TIMELINE
3,000 B.C.
The Beginnings of Carnival

Carnival (the same thing as Mardi Gras) dates back thousands of years to pagan festivals of Spring and fertility.

March 3, 1699
Mardi Gras comes to the US

French explorers land in what will become Louisiana. They celebrate and name the spot, "Point du Mardi Gras."

1762-1800
Spain cancels Mardi Gras

There were no celebrations during the Spanish possession of Louisiana.

1827
The colorful costumes begin

Students danced through the streets of New Orleans imitating the revelry they'd experienced in Paris.

2013
The Super Gras

New Orleans hosts Mardi Gras and the Super Bowl at the same time.

MARDI GRAS ACTIVITIES
Go to New Orleans

Arguably one of the best and most famous Mardi Gras celebrations happens in New Orleans. Anyone will tell you Nola does it right. Enjoy the dancing, the explosion of colors, the food, and the fantastic music!

Join a Mardi Gras dance group
Have you seen those incredible dancers in the Mardi Gras parades? Would you like to learn how to do that? Well, you can! Dance groups are springing up all over the country. Amaze your friends with your awesome moves, and maybe end up in a local parade.

Host your own Mardi Gras Party
You know how to throw a party. But this time, you get to add riots of color. The more outrageous, the more ostentatious, the better your party will be. You really can't go wrong. Tell everyone to bring their craziest costume ever. They'll love the chance to set their imaginations free.

WHY WE LOVE MARDI GRAS
The Mardi Gras Dancers are awesome

It's one of the first things that come to mind at Mardi Gras. The dancers are so graceful and their costumes are amazing. They're incredibly flexible and their rhythmic moves would send most of us straight to the chiropractor. They're what makes this one of the world's greatest parties.

It encourages us to be silly
Mardi Gras is when we let our hair down. You can do any goofy thing and everyone will cheer you on. Put on your most outrageous costume and boogie. Wear a tutu, don a headdress, or maybe just put on a lampshade and dance on a table. It's all good. That's the spirit of Mardi Gras!

The people-watching is unbeatable
Even if you're not one of those awesome dancers or marchers in the parades, it's still all about having fun. This is the best day to share laughs and artistic expression. People save their creative juices preparing for this event and it shows. Enjoy the costumes and imagination of the revelers. Soak in the sights that only come about once a year. Walk through the streets with thousands of friends you've never met before.

Great Turf Wars

There were already Turf Wars dating back to 2,000 years before the current setting, perhaps either as a competitive sport or a method to settle conflicts. The first recorded Turf War occurred during a period in Inkling history with many similarities to Ancient Egypt, roughly 2,000 years before the events of Splatoon began. However, as these Turf Wars of nineteen centuries later involved the Inklings and Octarians (instead of just teams of four Inklings), it has expanded into a bigger campaign, great enough to become a historical event.

Before the Great Turf Wars, the Inklings and Octarians had "amicable relations", until the rising sea levels caused them to lash out against each other in a power struggle over the remaining land.

As time progressed, the Octarians separated themselves from the other species of the Mollusc Era. They became dissatisfied with the amount of available dry land and waged war on the Inklings, the other dominant species at the time, to gain total control of the turf.

The Octarians constructed a variety of large machines known as the Great Octoweapons and began attacking Inkling cities.

The first battles of the Great War ended in victory for the Octarian forces. The diligent Octarians easily dominated the Inklings, who were unable to wake up early enough in the morning to defend themselves.(The Inklings have long led a hedonistic style of life).

Heralded by loud explosions, the Great Octoweapons quickly stormed the Inklings' central stronghold. Victory for the Octarians seemed all but certain, but due to a plug being carelessly pulled from its socket, their hopes were dashed. Lady Luck shone down on the Inklings, and the Inklings' victory over the Octarians was most likely due to their superior number of limbs. The Inklings secured a victory in the war and forced the Octarians to retreat to underground lairs such as Octo Valley, which were constructed from the ruins of the subterranean cities built by the remnants of humanity.

The Inkling faction had a fighting force known as the Squidbeak Splatoon led by Cap'n Cuttlefish, which fought against the Octarians during the war..

National Drink Wine Day

National Drink Wine Day is held each year on February 18, so get ready to unwind with a glass or two of your favorite Cabernet Sauvignon or Chardonnay. Wine has been a staple in human culture since its invention in 7000 BC. Some ancient societies enjoyed their wine so much, they even worshipped it! These days, hundreds of types of wine are produced all over the world, so there’s an endless variety to choose from.

HISTORY OF NATIONAL DRINK WINE DAY

While we know humans have been making wine for thousands of years, no one is certain who was the first to ferment grapes into the beverage we now call wine. Evidence of ancient wine production has been found in China, the Middle East, and Greece, so it appears many different cultures discovered the process at nearly the same time. The oldest known winery was found in a cave in Armenia, and is over 4,000 years old — The vinters there were using a grape still used to make wine today! Barrels of wine have been found in the tombs of Egyptian Pharaohs, and the Ancient Greeks used wine in secret religious ceremonies. Although wine has taken all sorts of different forms throughout the ages, the process has changed very little in the thousands of years since its invention. Grapes are crushed, pressed, and fermented, and the mixture is sealed into barrels. The mixture is aged, and then bottled. Using these simple steps, an infinite variety of wines can be created, and different regions of the world are known for the distinctive vintages they produce. Things like soil, temperature, and weather all affect the way wine grapes grow, and make each batch unique. Two bottles of the same wine from the same vineyard might taste totally different depending on the year they were produced, and some vintages become highly sought after as a result. Use this National Drink Wine Day to try a new bottle, and relax with the knowledge that you’re celebrating a long, long human tradition.

National Caregivers Day

National Caregivers Day is observed on the third Friday in February — on February 19 this year. The day honors individuals who selflessly provide personal care, and physical- and emotional support to those who need it most. There are different types of caregivers who are not just limited to the health sector. The types are: family caregiver, professional caregiver, independent caregiver, private duty caregiver, and informal caregiver. Some of them are not always paid, which is why it is essential to appreciate and thank them for their long-term commitment.

HISTORY OF NATIONAL CAREGIVERS DAY
Caregivers really go the mile in providing the essentials and necessities, from medical aid to personal grooming. Despite this, they are under-appreciated and often underpaid, or not paid at all. For this reason, the Providers Association for Home Health & Hospice Agencies, PAHHHA, established the third Friday in February as National Caregivers Day in 2015. They aimed to dedicate a day annually to recognize and appreciate caregivers everywhere. PAHHHA also provides resources that enable others to extend gratitude to the caregivers in their lives. The first celebration of the holiday took place in 2016.

According to a report by the Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index, caregivers spend six days in a month grooming, feeding, dressing, bathing, and walking, 13 days a month commuting, cleaning, doing the laundry, monitoring medication, shopping, and cooking special meals for their patient. Furthermore, 13 hours a month are spent coordinating visits with physicians, researching symptoms and diseases, and managing finances.

The National Alliance for Caregiving and American Association of Retired Persons reports that, in 2020, an estimated 53 million caregivers in the U.S. cared for an adult or child without getting paid for it. While most caregivers tend to one adult, approximately 15% look after two adults, and 3% care for three or more adults. The Institute on Aging reports that over ¾ of caregivers are female who spend 50% more time providing essential services than males.

But who will care for the caregivers? What’s surprising is that many caregivers are elders themselves, and the number of hours they spend caregiving only increases with time. The average age of caregivers looking after a person 65 years or older is 63 years old! Many of them report having poor health themselves.

We think the special kindness and patience of caregivers should be celebrated year-round. Their importance is especially honored on National Caregivers Day when we should be there for them just as they are there for our loved ones.

NATIONAL CAREGIVERS DAY FAQS
When is National Family Caregivers Month?

The month of November is celebrated as National Family Caregivers Month.

What is a good gift for a caregiver?
Caregivers seek rest and relaxation above all so a great gift idea is treating them to a relaxing day at the spa with aromatherapy and massage treatments. This will also promote a better quality of sleep.

What are the signs of a caregiver being under stress?
Signs of caregivers being fatigued include feelings of worry, tiredness, disturbed sleep patterns, loss of weight, and general shifts in mood.

HOW TO OBSERVE NATIONAL CAREGIVERS DAY
Donate to a caregiver’s favorite charity

Sometimes, giving gifts to a professional caregiver is considered off-limits. Instead, a donation on behalf of the caregiver can be made to a charity of their choice.

Express it with a letter
Appreciation and words go a long way in giving joy and boosting the morale of a caregiver. Sincerely express your gratitude through a letter and let the caregiver in your life know how much their work means to you and your loved ones.

Post on social media
Create some hype on social media around caregivers to show your support and let others know what an awesome job they are doing. Don’t forget to use the hashtag #NationalCaregiversDay

5 FACTS ABOUT CAREGIVERS THAT WILL BLOW YOUR MIND
Their own relationships suffer

One out of four caregivers say their personal relationships suffer due to their caregiving duties.

Caregiving is often unpaid
More than 53 million caregivers in the U.S. are unpaid.

Family caregivers invest a lot
Family caregivers providing support from a distance spend over $8,000 every year.

Bridging generations
27% of caregivers provide services to a child as well as their parents.

There are more females than males
About 61% of family caregivers are women.

WHY WE LOVE NATIONAL CAREGIVERS DAY
Caregivers are no less than heroes

With great power comes great responsibility. They don’t wear capes, but caregivers are real-life heroes who help and care for those who need it most and change their lives for the better.

Caregivers are cool!
What most people don’t realize is what fantastic friends caregivers can be! They have fascinating stories to tell, and really know how to have fun. Caregiving is a demanding and hectic duty but there is never a dull moment.

Caregivers need a support system
They deal with a lot, and it is at times super stressful to look after someone with diligence. They live almost two (or more) lives and juggle their personal tasks with providing care to the best of their abilities. National Caregivers Day serves as a day of support for caregivers and we are here to help them in every way possible!
