Gorgeous Grandma Day

On July 23rd, Gorgeous Grandma Day recognizes all women of a certain age, whether they are grandmothers or not.

Not all women become grandmothers. Those who do, don’t necessarily fit the traditional mold any longer. Others still reach a point where many assume grandmother status, even though no grandchildren are about. Gorgeous Grandma Day embraces the age of the nana and encourages all women to flaunt their granny attitudes with purpose and style.

While some grandmas fit the traditional mold with gray hair and cookie-baking, home-making, hug-giving, child-spoiling energy to spare, many grannies sport a whole new role. Many take on the part of grandma to the children in their lives.

No matter the type of grandmother they are, they’re all different. Some play the hippest games, wear the latest styles, and know how to find the best deals on technology. Even the grandkids can’t keep up! Funny, sassy and energetic grandmas, rebel grannies and smart grannies make the grade, too.

In many scenarios, grandmother-types step into the role where no grandmother remains. These women lend ears, laps, and hugs, much like the nanas of memory. Of course, they build foundations and set young men and women on their path.

Nearly all of these fantastic women pass down family traditions while teaching children to stand on our own. Full of wisdom and wit, what would anyone do without their nanas? They go by many names, but they’re all gorgeous in their own way.

On Gorgeous Grandma Day, let the grandmothers in your life know how much they mean to you.

HOW TO OBSERVE #GorgeousGrandmaDay

No matter your age, be your gorgeous self. Maybe you’re a grandma, and perhaps you’re not. It doesn’t matter. Own the attitude and celebrate. Use #GorgeousGrandmaDay to share on social media

GORGEOUS GRANDMA DAY HISTORY

Alice Solomon created Gorgeous Grandma Day in 1984 to honor women of a certain age, whether they were grandmothers or not. It’s a time to recognize their accomplishments and their abilities. Their lives have only just begun.

National Drive-Thru Day

National Drive-Thru Day on July 24 celebrates the fact we can pick up and eat a meal without having to leave the comfort of our car. We may take it for granted but eating in our cars is a privilege that would have sounded bonkers had you suggested it a hundred years ago. With that in mind, this day is for celebrating those establishments who allow us to take multitasking to a whole new level. Pick your favorite drive-thru and go grab yourself a bite to eat.

HISTORY OF NATIONAL DRIVE-THRU DAY

The first drive-thru is believed to have been at Red’s Giant Hamburg on Route 66 in Springfield, Missouri in 1947. In 1948 the original In-N Out Burger opened a drive-thru, which is now the longest surviving drive-thru in the U.S.

In 1951 Jack in the Box created the first drive-thru chain to try and capitalize on the rapidly growing automobile culture. The first store was in San Diego and was drive-thru only, offering customers the chance to grab a hamburger for 18¢.

You may think of drive-thru and instantly think of McDonald’s. Well, you may be a little surprised to know that it was 1975 when they opened their first drive-thru. McDonald’s already had over 3,000 stores worldwide at the time and were well on their way to becoming the global leader in fast-food.

The drive-thru became so popular that it started to influence car design. In 1983 the cupholder as we know started to appear in cars. National Drive-Thru Day was created in 2002 and was founded by the original drive-thru chain, Jack in the Box.

Even though Jack in the Box was the first drive-thru burger chain, it wasn’t the first drive-thru. That honor goes to a bank calledThe City Center Bank in Syracuse, New York. The bank debuted its drive-thru in 1928.

In-N Out Burger has been opened in Los Angeles since 1948 and has been running its business since.

When is the best time to drive through a fast-food joint?
The best time would be early afternoon in the window between lunch and dinner. You’ll have the breeziest time picking up your order.

HOW TO CELEBRATE NATIONAL DRIVE-THRU DAY

Try a new drive-thru
Use this special day to get out of your drive-thru comfort zone and experience someplace different. If you're normally a McDonald's visitor, try a Burger King, or branch out even further and visit a Taco Bell, a Jack In the Box, or another new-to-you restaurant.

Look for special deals
Many fast food restaurants love National Drive-Thru Day as much as we do and will be offering fun specials to celebrate. Follow your favorites on social media or check their websites to find out about deals near you.

Invite your friends
Go all-out and grab a group of friends to celebrate together. Pile into a mini-van, turn up the radio, and hit your favorite drive-thrus — hamburgers at this one, milkshakes at the next, french fries at the next.

5 FACTS ABOUT NATIONAL DRIVE-THRU DAY

We love fast food
There are more than 224,000 fast-food restaurants in the United States. These restaurants hire over 3.5 million people, bringing in more than $185 billion in sales each year.

It shares the date with other national holidays
July 24 is also National Tequila Day and National Cousins Day.

It was originally created for banks
The drive-thru format was created in the United States for banking services.

Mid-afternoon is the best time to go
During mid-afternoon is when drive-thrus are not only the fastest but friendliest as well. The optimal time of day to hit the drive-thru is the mid-afternoon “snack” period when wait times average 173 seconds.

Drive-thru design heavily influences what we order
Have you ever noticed how appetizing photos of chicken nuggets and burgers look on drive-thru boards? Well, these boards are designed this way to attract customers.

WHY WE LOVE NATIONAL DRIVE-THRU DAY

Drive-thrus take laziness to a new level of acceptability
Drive-thrus are meant to be used. Why go to the trouble of finding a parking spot, walking to the restaurant, standing in line, waiting for your order, and having to remember where you parked your car when the restaurant has kindly given you a way to skip all those steps?

Drive-thrus force us to clean our cars regularly
An unfortunate side effect of in-car dining is some messiness can occur: dropped french fries, mislaid ketchup packets, muffin crumbs, and tortilla chips. But a clean car is a happy car (and a happy car owner), so drive-thrus can be a great motivator for a car wash.

Drive-thrus are not just for dinner anymore
It’s not only food that gets passed from one open window to another these days: businesses from banks to pharmacies have also embraced the drive-thru, ensuring we never have to get out of our cars unless we want to (or miss the end of a favorite song or podcast).

National Cousins Day

National Cousins Day falls on the calendar every July 24 and is the perfect day to send some love to those family members we call cousins. Whether they were our first best friend or first antagonist, cousins are the people who made family get togethers fun – or at least more tolerable and less awkward – when we were kids. Whether close cousins or distant cousins, friends or foes, those of us who are lucky enough to still have cousins around should think about celebrating them today.

HISTORY OF NATIONAL COUSINS DAY

Exactly when National Cousins Day made its way onto our modern-day calendar is a mystery. What we do know is that cousins have been keeping families connected for a long time.

American families have been coming together for reunions since the first settlers left the safety of the colonies and headed west to find fame, fortune, and more importantly, land. As one generation passed the baton of keeping extended family connected onto the next generation, cousins became the guardians of family ties.

Even in families who no longer gather for regular reunions, cousins tend to reach out to each other later in life and revisit the shared memories of being family. If your cousins are like brothers and sisters or you became best friends growing up, staying in touch with them may not require a special day on your calendar. If you’re from a small family or one where the wanderlust gene is dominant and you’re not quite sure where all your cousins wandered off to years ago, celebrating cousinship takes a little more effort. It may take circling National Cousins Day on your calendar every year as an excuse to say hello to the cousins of your youth.

However, revisiting a family member you haven’t seen since you both were forced to sit at the kids’ table is always an interesting and nostalgic reunion. You get to see where your lives took you, the families you’ve created, the careers you’ve gone after, and the faces you’ve aged.

NATIONAL COUSINS DAY FAQS

Who is a cousin?
Cousins are two people who are both separated by two or more generations from their most recent common ancestor, which is typically a grandparent.

Who is called a First Cousin?
“First cousins” are the children of your aunt or uncle. (Aunts and uncles are the sisters or brothers of your mother or father.) Your closest common ancestor with a first cousin is one of your grandparents.

Can I date my first cousin?
There are no laws against dating a first cousin, but marriage between first cousins is discouraged and illegal in most states.

NATIONAL COUSINS DAY ACTIVITIES

Binge-watch cousin-themed reruns
Today is a good day to get reacquainted with those quirky cousin relationships we enjoyed on TV and big screen when we were kids. Remember summer reruns? Most vintage movies and many TV sitcoms have been digitized and are available on-demand. Some of our cousin-themed favorites: Parent Trap, c. 1961 starring Hayley Mills, My Cousin Vinny, c. 1992, starring Joe Pesci, Ralph Macchio, Marisa Tomei, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, c. 1990-1996, starring Will Smith

Host a digital National Cousins Day reunion
If your cousins live on the opposite coast or the other side of the planet, go digital. Schedule a live reunion hosted on one of the communication tools on social media platforms or use a webinar provider.

Send your DNA off to be tested
If you are the least bit curious about who your real blood relatives are (and are not) today is the day to stick that cotton swab in your cheek and find out. DNA testing will help you identify cousins you never even knew you had. It may be intimidating to think about learning who your long-lost relatives really are, but, hey! Connecting with your cousins is what National Cousins Day is all about.

FIVE CURIOUS FACTS ABOUT COUSIN RELATIONSHIPS

Six degrees of separation
A study by AncestryDNA revealed that the average Brit has more than 193,000 living cousins (6th cousin or closer) We’re not sure if the average American has this many living cousins, but it makes us wonder how many of us have unwittingly dated one of our cousins.

All in the family
Talent often runs in families, and that is true of celebrities. Some talented celebrity cousins we’ve admired over the years: Singers Whitney Houston and Dionne Warwick are first cousins, Singer Snoop Dogg is the first cousin of singer Brandy, actress Sissy Spacek and actor Rip Torn are first cousins, and here’s an odd pair: actress Lauren Bacall and Israeli Prime Minister Shimon Peres are first cousins

Maybe not all in the family
It is legal to marry your second cousin in all fifty states …but not your first cousin in most states.

Double Cousins
Apparently double cousins are a thing! If two brothers marry two sisters, their children are considered double first cousins.

Second cousins
Your second cousin is someone who shares the same great-grandparent as you but not the same grandparent.

WHY WE LOVE NATIONAL COUSINS DAY

Reconnect and make up
Today gives us a reason to make amends with estranged family, beginning with our cousins. Sometimes all it takes to patch things up is to just reach out and say hello. National Cousins Day is an excuse to call, email, or track down those long-lost cousins on social media. Regardless of outcome, making the effort is what counts.

Built-in best friends
Our cousins were some of our very first best friends. We’d see them during family get togethers, share gossip, and sneak extra snacks while our parents’ backs were turned.

Good vibrations
There is truth behind the age-old maxim: It is more blessed to give than to receive. Telling our favorite cousins how much we appreciate them and how special they are sends out positive vibes that boomerang right back to us. Everyone likes to feel specia

There is absolutely no question the mayor of Portland is stupid with with zeros. The fact we are coming up on 60 days of unchecked rioting in his city shows me this guy is either inept, on the side of the terrorists, or some of each.

However he is right about one thing. People are going to get hurt. Hurt badly, and possibly killed.

It is crystal clear to me that whoever is pulling the strings on the useful idiots rioting in our cities is pushing for more and more confrontation, especially with police. The attacks are growing bolder. There is a clear, almost military coordination in these attacks suggesting at least a basic command and control structure. There is a supply chain supporting these operations in the form of weapons being delivered to the terrorists, and in some cases being staged well in advance of the trouble.

Alas, the useful idiots on the streets seem to forget they are attacking human beings carrying guns. Eventually, somewhere, a bunch of these Darwin candidates are going to corner one or more officers and begin pelting them with frozen water bottles, bricks, rocks, rebar... everything including someone's kitchen sink. Those officers are going to be hurt, maybe close to being disabled, but being human, eventually one or more are going to snap. Or it may come down to saving their own life or the life one of their own.

Not wanting to die at the hands of a bunch of lawless brats who were never spanked, one or more of those cops are going to do a mag-dump into the crowd.

When considering how obvious this is, one cannot help but wonder if that is not the goal. It would be an epic PR disaster for law and order.

If it does happen, it will be a huge boost for the rioters trying to overthrow this nation. The lying sacks of waste organic waste material in most of the media are darn sure not going to tell us it was 50 on five situation with those 50 trying to kill those cops. The people rioting will all swear they were just peacefully protesting when those cops unloaded on them. And they will get tons of facetime on national TV for doing so.

I cannot think of anyway to stop it. Frankly, boys and girls, this is as close this nation has been to an actual civil war since the 1860's. I think the people pulling the strings on these protesters may be aiming for that very goal.

I wish the people saying to get rid of police go into these zones and quell the rioters w/o tasers, batons, rubber bullets, tears gas, flash bangs, guns and see how they hold up. I'm surprised the President didn't issue martial law in these areas and send in the national guard or the military to Zerg rush these fools.

National Hot Fudge Sundae Day

There are many cities that claim to be the home of the hot fudge sundae, but they’ve all got one thing in common: they’re American cities. Hot fudge sundaes are about as nostalgia-tinged as it gets: they’ve dotted pop culture for decades, further back than their cameo in Full House’s “Gotta Dance” episode, and more recently than in Katy Perry’s “California Gurls” video. Hot fudge sundaes have dominated the ice cream landscape for decades now, and on July 25, we celebrate: raise your spoons for National Hot Fudge Sundae Day!

NATIONAL HOT FUDGE SUNDAE DAY ACTIVITIES

Have a sundae party
An American classic. If you invite a bunch of people over with the promise of hot fudge sundaes, you're sure to have a good turnout!

Find an old-fashioned sundae parlor near you
While the 50s might be long gone, the visual of an ice cream sundae being prepared by a soda jerk at a classic diner is still worth recreating today. Many establishments practically serve nostalgia for dinner — find one of these diners in your neck of the woods!

Spoil your kids
We've got mother's day and father's day, but what about children's day? Yeah, yeah — "everyday is children's day" is a common refrain, but we're willing to bet they'd be really happy to find out that there was a special day every year where they wouldn't have to beg for that hot fudge sundae! Let them in on this holiday, and maybe it'll turn into a fun, yearly tradition for your family.

WHY WE LOVE NATIONAL HOT FUDGE SUNDAE DAY

They're easy to make
It'd be hard to argue that hot fudge sundaes are culinary masterpieces — after all, the simplest ones are often the best — especially when they're so easy to put together. But sometimes, it's something's simplicity that makes it great, and that's the case with the hot fudge sundae.

They bring back memories for many generations
How many things can kids born a hundred years apart appreciate together? Regardless of whether you were born in 1910 or 2010, chances are that you've got fond memories of hot fudge sundaes from your youth.

They're affordable
You can make anything expensive if you'd like to, but great sundaes can be made with some simple (and cheap!) ingredients. If you're on a budget, stick with the classic: hot fudge, vanilla ice cream, chopped walnuts, and a maraschino cherry.

National Wine and Cheese Day

One of the most basic, yet classic food-and-drink pairings is wine and cheese. Sipping a tangy red or white between bites of a creamy, nutty cheese on a cracker is one of the most pleasant experiences around. That’s why freelance writer and wine lover Jace Shoemaker-Galloway created National Wine and Cheese Day on July 25.

Now, we’re not talking just any wine and any cheese. Two-buck Chuck and sliced sharp cheddar on a Ritz while watching Netflix is fantastic, but it’s fun to broaden out and socialize. Make this a day to get together with friends, bring out some reds and whites, chiantis, ports, blushes, and champagnes along with Roquefort, Limburger, gorgonzola and mizithra, and have some fun!

NATIONAL WINE AND CHEESE DAY TIMELINE

2015
Italy's the wine champ

Italy pulls ahead of France to produce the largest amount of wine — and becomes the world's largest exporter.

1864
Cheese for the masses

Mass manufacturing of cheese starts after Louis Pasteur discovers pasteurization.

1500-1800
Regional cheeses appear

Cheddar shows up in 1500, Parmigiano-Reggiano in 1597, Gouda in 1697 and Camembert in 1791.

4000 BC
Wine comes to Eurasia

This, according to tests for wine residue on vat and jar fragments found in an ancient Armenian cave.

6000 BC
Europe gets cheesy

Evidence includes ceramic remains of rudimentary cheese strainers appearing at Neolithic sites.

NATIONAL WINE AND CHEESE DAY ACTIVITIES

Learn what goes together
Knowledge is power, and there are lots of ways to learn about what wine-and-cheese pairings you and others will enjoy. If you’re just getting started, Vinepair’s illustrated guide to pairing is a fun way to get going, and if you have some experience, you may want to dive into cheese expert Janet Fletcher’s sophisticated and extensive book Cheese & Wine: A Guide to Selecting, Pairing, and Enjoying.

Indulge yourself at your local wine shop
After you jot some notes as to what pairings might appeal to your taste, why not head out to your local wine shop and get some tips from the owner? Alternatively, you can leave the tasty tactics to the experts by subscribing to a wine-and-cheese pairing subscription like Wine Down Box or Pastoral.

Have a pairing party
Sharing is caring, so it makes sense to get social with your pairings. Bring some friends together at either your home or a local Meetup focused on some of the best that the wine and cheese industries have to offer.

3 WAYS TO ENHANCE YOUR WINE AND CHEESE PAIRINGS

Keep the tannins low
Get advice on which wines are low in tannins — which can overpower your enjoyment of an accompanying cheese. .

Balance salty and sweet
Pairing a good quality blue cheese, feta or Gouda with a dry wine might induce a pucker and lessen your enjoyment.

Add fruit and nuts to your pairings
Top off brie and berries with a Merlot. Walnuts, cheddar and a Cabernet are another winning combo.

WHY WE LOVE NATIONAL WINE AND CHEESE DAY

Wine and cheese are delicious together
Most of this has to do with “mouthfeel” or the way foods feel in the mouth. Well-chosen foods that have opposite complementary tastes — like the creamy, fatty flavor of cheese vs. the rich, astringent flavor of wine — can create a pleasant sensation and instill a tasty match in the mind. Researchers have found that eating cheese while drinking wine can actually improve the experience you get from both.

Pairing is a fun way to learn about Europe
Europeans have served wine and cheese produced in their regions or villages together for many generations. One of the more famous combinations are creamy Brie cheese and light-bodied Beaujolais red wine from the Brie region in northern France. The pairing of nutty Asiago cheese and either rich Chianti or oaky Brunello originates in the central Italian region of Tuscany.

Even soldiers drank wine
During the first World War, French soldiers were given a daily ration that included one Camembert cheese and a half-pint of red wine. That may seem indulgent for fighting rations, but it was done for a practical reason — polluted water supplies made bottled wine safer for soldiers to drink.

Once they are almost done, we fold in crispy corn tortilla chips, shredded Longhorn Jack cheese (made right here in NewTexas, naturally), and home-made salsa. Woo! We load all that into a hand-made corn tortilla made by certified Texas Abuelitas with love. Remember, a whole egg in every taco!®

Today's Special Salsa is our new Salsa Ranchero, a smoky, yet spicy salsa prepared with tomatoes, garlic, chipotle peppers, and jalapeños. A sealed cup of Texas-made Longhorn Cheddar Jack cheese is also included for the cheese-lovers. The taco is hermetically-sealed in a Stay-Warm® pouch that is wrapped in the same ol' aluminum foil we are all so familiar with for our breakfast taco. We are trying to keep it real, peeps. For your beverage accompaniment, a packet of Sanka, Tang and a Lipton Tea bag will be included with every delivery as well as salt and pepper and a napkin. Yes, it is different, but it works and you do not even have to leave your residence. Woo! And, watch out for the drones! Start your day off the right way; munch out and go back to sleep. National Parents’ Day

Where would we be without our parents, the people who loved us even before we were born? They do so much for us every day of our young lives and the love doesn’t stop once we’re adults. That’s why it’s good to honor them on their special day, National Parents’ Day July 26, celebrated on the fourth Sunday in July.

While Mother’s and Father’s days were first officially celebrated in the early 1900s, (and National Grandpa Day is already approaching its 40 year anniversary); National Parents’ Day wasn’t established until 1994. That’s when President Bill Clinton signed a Congressional Resolution “recognizing, uplifting, and supporting the role of parents in bringing up their children.” Well said!

NATIONAL PARENTS’ DAY TIMELINE

The House and Senate have both signed the Parents’ Day resolution.

August 5, 1994

The U.S. House of Representatives introduces a resolution establishing the fourth Sunday in July as National Parents’ Day.

PTA formed

The National Parent Teacher Association originally formed as the National Congress of Mothers in Washington, D.C.

NATIONAL PARENTS’ DAY ACTIVITIES

Call or visit them
Parents love visits from the kids and grandkids. And let’s face it — they aren’t going to be around forever, as much as we wish they could be. We should tell our parents how much they mean to us.

Tell them they were right
Parents are always dispensing wisdom and advice as we grow up, most of it unsolicited. As kids, we often dismiss these truths or ignore them outright. Then, we grow up and have kids of our own — and we realize how right our parents were about pretty much everything all along.

Give them a holiday for the holiday
Find out where your parents have always wanted to go and send them on vacation. Take care of every detail so that all your folks have to do is show up at the airport — or the cruise ship terminal!

WHY WE LOVE NATIONAL PARENTS’ DAY

Parents do everything for us
When we’re helpless babes in swaddling clothes; our parents feed us, burp us, and clean up our messy bums. When we’re up all night crying, they hold us close to their hearts and walk around the living room singing to us. They bandage our booboos. They give us someone to rely on, shoulders to cry on, and advice about kids in our classes who bully us—then say they have a crush on us. There’s nothing our parents haven’t done for us. We owe them everything.

Parents deserve a separate holiday
Moms have May, and fathers have June, so it seems appropriate that the very next month of the calendar has a day just for parents. While a relative newcomer to the slate of American familial holidays, National Parents’ Day has evolved into one of our favorites. Remember that even if the person or people who raised you with love aren't biologically-related to you, they have been there during good times and bad. Let’s honor them all.

Parents are our biggest fans
Parents think we’re beautiful little miracles when we’re kids — and even after we’ve grown up. They cheer for us when we step up to bat during Little League and they encourage us while we learn to play trumpet or even, drums. Our parents mark our growth on door jambs and walls. They celebrate us every day and now it's our chance to return the love on this special day.

National Aunt and Uncle Day

National Aunts and Uncles Day is observed every July 26. Our aunts and uncles are unique parts of our family; they can be like a second set of parents, or great friends you happen to be related to. Often, they’ve watched us grow up, and are full of stories about things we did in our youth we might not even remember. July is a great month for a cookout, or outdoor activities. Call up your aunts and uncles and ask them to come out and celebrate their special place in your life.

HISTORY OF NATIONAL AUNT AND UNCLE DAY
It’s unclear exactly when National Aunts and Uncles Day was started, but it’s safe to say people have been celebrating their parent’s siblings for a long time. The word aunt is derived from the French word for the same familial relation, tante. Uncle is also derived from a french word — oncle. Both of these words start even further back in history, stemming from the Latin words amita and avunculus respectively.

Aunts and uncles have different roles in many human societies. For example, in the Ashanti tribe of Ghana, aunts and uncles are given free reign to discipline and raise their siblings’ children. They’re essentially a second set of parents, who you real parents trust the most because, well, they were raised together. In many Polynesian cultures, anyone older than you may be addressed as aunt or uncle as a term of respect and endearment. Aunts and uncles also occupy a place of importance in modern pop culture, with many famous examples across television, literature, and film. Often, these characters, such as Uncle Phil from The Fresh Prince, act as parental figures for their niece, nephews, and their own children, signifying their position as wise and trusted members of the family.

NATIONAL AUNT AND UNCLE DAY TIMELINE
1910
Rabbit, Rabbit

Beloved cartoon character Uncle Wiggily, an aged but wisecracking rabbit, debuts in the Newark News.

1943:
Nice to meet you

Thanks to the invention of the Huzenlaub process, a technique for parboiling rice, scientists are able to create a revolutionary new food — Uncle Ben’s minute rice.

1947
Royal welcome

Queen Elizabeth II becomes an aunt to Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall.

1962
Spider-Aunt

Aunt May is introduced in Amazing Fantasy as the aunt and guardian of Peter Parker; a boy better known as Spider-Man.

NATIONAL AUNT AND UNCLE DAY FAQS
What if I don’t have an aunt or uncle?

That’s ok! Everyone’s family is different. Use today to spend time with the people in your life who have performed a similar role for you — parents, grandparents, or even close family friends.

What if my family lives too far away?
Today’s technology makes it easy to keep up with family, even if they live across the sea. Use a video conferencing app to have a face-to-face hang with your relatives!

What if I don’t know my aunts or uncles well?
That’s fine — maybe today is the perfect excuse to start getting to know them a little better.

NATIONAL AUNT AND UNCLE DAY ACTIVITIES
Spend some quality time with your aunts and uncles

This might seem obvious, but what better way is there to celebrate your extended family than by spending time with them?

Go through a photo album with them
Dust off an old photo album and fip through it with your aunts and uncles. Find pictures of them — and your parents — as kids, and have them tell you the stories that go with them.

Make a family tree
Your aunts and uncles might have better insight into your family history than you; after all, they’ve been around longer. Asking them to help you flesh out a family tree will be fun, and educational.

5 FACTS ABOUT AUNTS AND UNCLES
Talk about “great” aunt

Susannah Jones, an American woman who lived to be 116 years old, had over 100 nieces and nephews at the time of her death.

An uncle you can’t refuse
Francis Ford Coppola, director of The Godfather, is actor Nicholas Cage’s uncle.

“I want you”
Uncle Sam, the personification of the United States, is named for Samuel Wilson, a man from New York upon whom his appearance is also based.

You’re moving with your auntie and uncle
The first season of The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air premiered in 1990

Quakers and pancakes
The Quaker Oats Company originally based their Aunt Jemima logo off of a minstrel show.

WHY WE LOVE NATIONAL AUNT AND UNCLE DAY

It reminds us to spend time with our family
Today’s world is busy and distracted. It’s easy to forget to check in with family if you don’t see them every day — so make a point of getting in touch to celebrate this holiday!

It makes memories that will last forever
Taking the time to have a great day with your family is never something you’ll regret. Use today to have great times that you’ll always remember.

You can learn about yourself and your family
Aunts and uncles are full of stories and family history. By spending the day with them, you’ll probably learn some new and fun information about your family

National Creme Brûlée Day

In a miraculous stroke of culinary genius, someone thought that topping vanilla custard with a brittle crust of caramelized sugar would taste good. Of course they were wrong — it tasted incredibly delicious! The dessert is best known as Crème Brûlée (“burnt creme” in French) and depending on where you’re from, it’s also known as Crema Catalana and Trinity Burnt Creme. Whatever you like to call this intensely creamy, crunchy and luxurious dish, schedule your day of indulgence on July 27, National Crème Brûlée Day.

NATIONAL CREME BRÛLÉE DAY TIMELINE

1691
Printed recipe

The first printed recipe for a dessert called crème brûlée appeared in the 1691 edition of the French cookbook, "Le Cuisinier Royal et Bourgeois".

1600s
Cambridge Burnt Cream or "Trinity Cream" appears in England

According to Colin Spencer, author of "British Food: An Extraordinary Thousand Years of History," a dessert similar to crème brûlée appears to have been prepared regularly.

15th century
Burnt cream dish goes to college

Burnt cream dessert — branded with the official college crest on top — begins to be served at Trinity College in Cambridge, England.

Medieval times
Crema Catalana becomes a go-to dessert in Spain

Crema Catalana, a custard topped with caramelized sugar, is reportedly served regularly in Spain.

NATIONAL CREME BRÛLÉE DAY ACTIVITIES

Cook up a classic version and enjoy!
There's nothing like the original. If you haven't made a standard crème brûlée before, just know that there are lots of nuanced variations between recipes in terms of ingredient amounts and methods. This includes whether you broil the cream to create your crispy topping or go all-in by using a small butane torch to get that crust.

Share your variations with friends
No need to stop at vanilla to make a killer crème brûlée. You can substitute virtually any flavor extract or spice mix as you prepare your custard and include fruit or other garnishes before baking. You can even flavor your dessert with key lime, chai, Irish coffee, even pineapple!

Throw a crème brûlée-themed party
You can make each party-goer their own individual crème dessert or you can be adventurous and try out crème brûlée-flavored brownies, cheesecake, cupcakes or pies. If there's anything better than decadence, it's decadence shared among friends!

5 FIERY FACTS ABOUT CRÈME BRÛLÉE

Torches optional
You don't need a butane torch to make a crème brûlée topping — just broil for two to three minutes.

Simple ingredients
Eggs, cream, vanilla, sugar and water are all you need to make crème brûlée.

Big brûlée
The largest crème brûlée on record weighed 1,600 pounds.

Vegan crème
Vegan crème brûlée can be made from coconut and almond milk, sugar, corn starch, nutritional yeast and vanilla bean.

Weird science
Popcorn, chocolate bars, donuts, cocktails and even, hair products have all been made to taste or smell like crème brûlée.

WHY WE LOVE NATIONAL CREME BRÛLÉE DAY

It's a heavenly dessert
Consider that crème brûlée is a custard made up of a mixture of vanilla-infused cream, egg yolks, and sugar, with a scattering of sugar on top. If you've never tasted one, add this luxurious dessert to your bucket list.

It's got intriguingly contested origins
The first crème brûlée recipe appeared in a royal cookbook written by a cook at France's Palace of Versailles in 1691. But a similar dessert called Trinity Burnt Creme appeared as far back as the 1400's in England. There's even earlier evidence of a Spanish version called Crema Catalana.

It's tasty and versatile
Since crème brûlée bounced back into popularity during the '80s, the dessert has been modified way beyond its vanilla basics — with cooks jazzing up the flavors to include everything from chocolate and lemon to peach and Nutella. There's even a recipe calling for a snickerdoodle-flavored crème. Bon Appetit!

World Hepatitis Day

World Hepatitis Day is a public health holiday held each year to raise awareness about hepatitis, a group of infectious diseases that attack the liver and affect people all over the globe. The day also promotes testing and prevention for all five types of the disease: A, B, C, D and E. The World Hepatitis Alliance established this day in 2008 but did you know it was originally held on May 19? The date moved to July 28 in 2010 after the World Health Assembly decided to commemorate the birthday of Baruch Samuel Blumberg, an American physician who discovered hepatitis B in the Sixties, eventually winning a Nobel Prize for his work on the virus and its vaccine.

HOW TO TAKE PART

Get tested
Get tested on World Hepatitis Day because you may be unaware that you're infected. It’s a simple blood test that you can take at your doctor’s office or at your neighborhood health center. After you're tested, encourage your friends and family to do the same.

Join an event
Tons of health organizations and affiliates raise awareness about the virus with events on World Hepatitis Day, July 28. Attend concerts, rallies, pop-up testings and more. Search the World Hepatitis Day website to find an event near you.

Or, host your own awareness event
If you can’t find an event near you, no problem! Take the initiative to host a fundraising run/walk, happy hour or a meal. The World Hepatitis Day site has campaign materials, toolkits, and other resources you can download. So, let's get this party started!

WHY WORLD HEPATITIS DAY IS IMPORTANT

It’s a global epidemic
Hepatitis is not one of those diseases that only affects certain demographics or specific regions in the world; you can get hepatitis anywhere. It’s estimated that about 400 million people are infected by hepatitis, worldwide. You can contract hepatitis through blood contact or sexual intercourse. A mother can pass it to her child. That’s why hepatitis can affect people in places where there's little information about the impact on unsafe sexual practices or drug abuse. Left untreated, hepatitis can lead to dangerous and sometimes, fatal liver diseases.

We’ve made huge strides
Here’s the good news: over the last 100 years, there’s been considerable progress in preventing and treating hepatitis. There are vaccines for both hepatitis A and B. At an early age, people in developing countries automatically get these vaccines from their doctors. Hepatitis C is easily treated and hepatitis D and E are rare.

But we still have a long way to go
Almost 90% of the people who have contracted hepatitis don’t realize they’re infected. The World Hepatitis Alliance has set a challenging goal to eliminate viral hepatitis as a public health threat by 2030. With your help, it’s an achievable goal.

Love to see you flying the colors :) You've inspired me to make a phlag, as well.

Won't be a normal year of baseball, but it's nice to think about simple pleasures like that, regardless.

You have one the best broadcast museums in the nation, quite possibly the world, in your city.

Nice to see another Phanatic in TX.

I love and miss Texas. But I don't want to be there right now, because it's really hot there. I was supposed to come back and visit friends this summer, but it didn't work out. Someday I will move back, so I can be with my friends again, and eat Whataburger every day.
