Tales From The Hood. The only Spike Lee film I've been able to stomach. This was a vignette of four short stories told by an undertaker, Mr. Simms, to three inner city gang bangers who stopped by a funeral home to buy some drugs Simms found. While I really enjoyed the movie, one must be warned it is set around some gang members. The language will singe even the more seasoned ears out there. People with sensitive ears may not enjoy it.

Mr. Simms: "Death... it comes in many strange packages."

Peace Officers Memorial Day

Every May 15th Peace Officers Memorial Day pays tribute to local, state, and federal law enforcement officers who have made the ultimate sacrifice or been injured in the line of duty. The observance takes place during Police Week.

According to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund, more than 800,000 law enforcement officers serve in the United States today. Each year, the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial adds new names to the wall, on average 163 deaths per year. Fallen law enforcement officers represent all levels of law enforcement, including local, state, federal, tribal, and military law enforcement. They’re family members, husbands, wives, parents, sons, and daughters.

The day honors fallen LEO across the nation and offers support to their surviving family members and officers.

HOW TO OBSERVE #PeaceOfficersMemorialDay

Many organizations, government agencies, and private citizens fly flags at half-staff in memory of those officers who have made the ultimate sacrifice. Services honoring the fallen are conducted across the country, including Washington, D.C. Attend a memorial near you. Support families of fallen and injured law enforcement officers.

The National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial wall in Washington, D.C., features the names of more than 22,000 law enforcement officers who have been killed in the line of duty. Use #PeaceOfficersMemorialDay to post on social media.

PEACE OFFICERS MEMORIAL DAY HISTORY

On October 1, 1961, Congress asked President John F. Kennedy to designate May 15th as a day to honor peace officers. President Kennedy declared Peace Officers Memorial Day on October 1, 1962. In 1994, Bill Clinton made an amendment through Public Law 103-322 that directed the United States flag to be flown at half-staff on May 15th in honor of the day.

An annual Memorial Service gathering began in 1992 in Senate Park and later became known as Police Week.

National Defense Transportation Day

National Defense Transportation Day is a United States Federal Observance Day held on the third Friday in May.

A significant part of the U.S. economy is the vast network of transportation infrastructure. The cost of maintaining and investing in expansion is a constant balancing act.

The first federally funded road in United States history is called National Road. Built between 1811 and 1834, it connected eastern Maryland and Pennsylvania to the western states, Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois. The National Road terminated at the Mississippi River and brought goods from the east, allowing them to be carried north and south along the river.

The railroad pushed transportation westward from there. The first transcontinental railroad came to completion in 1869 when a rail worker drove the Golden Spike into place in the Utah territory. It would join the Union Pacific and Central Railroads.

Aviation brought an exhilarating turn to transportation in the early 20th century. With the birth of air travel, commercial and cargo flights became necessary parts of the transportation system, too. Added to ocean-going freight, airliners brought a whole new dimension to transportation.

From our bridges and interstate highways, public transportation to our waterways, and air travel, transportation is a vital part of our economy and livelihood. #DefenseTransportationDay recognizes the importance of transportation and the people who support and protect the system in this modern era.

HOW TO OBSERVE #DefenseTransportationDay

While we use some sort of transportation almost every day, it’s easy to take for granted. Learn more about each part of the infrastructure. Celebrate the people who keep it running, the engineers, pilots, inventors, skilled workers, and safety personnel. Consider the hundreds of thousands of people employed in each market and what it takes to perform their job. Join events and ceremonies across the country celebrating the enormous endeavor that is transportation. Use #DefenseTransportationDay to post on social media.

NATIONAL DEFENSE TRANSPORTATION DAY HISTORY

On May 16, 1957, Congress designated the third Friday of May each year as National Defense Transportation Day. In 1962, Congress included the whole week within which the Friday falls as National Transportation Week. A proclamation is signed each year by the current President of the United States.

National Endangered Species Day

Each year on the third Friday in May, National Endangered Species Day offers an opportunity for everyone to learn about the importance of protecting endangered species. The observance also encourages learning about wildlife habitats and the actions necessary to protect them. Every year you can participate along with thousands of others at events hosted by wildlife refuges, zoos, parks, community centers, aquariums, botanical gardens, libraries, and schools.

The 40th anniversary of the Federal Endangered Species Act was observed in 2013.
The observance is designed to protect critically imperiled species from extinction as a “consequence of economic growth and development untempered by adequate concern and conservation.” On December 28, 1973, President Richard Nixon signed the Federal Endangered Species Act into law.

The Act is administered by two federal agencies, the United States Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). The FWS maintains a list of all the endangered species, which includes birds, insects, fish, reptiles, mammals, crustaceans, flowers, grasses, and trees. In late 2019, President Trump announced a major overhaul to the law that would reduce regulations. Because of this, it’s more important than ever to support the ESA.

HOW TO OBSERVE #EndangeredSpeciesDay

Many conservation groups, zoos, and wildlife organizations hold a variety of events. These events focus on saving endangered species, improving conservation and education. They host seminars and exhibits aimed at raising awareness across the nation. They also offer discounted or free passes to their facilities. Some ways to participate in the day include:

* Don’t buy illegal wildlife products, such as ivory
* Avoid unsustainable food products, such as palm oil
* Donate to a conservation group or wildlife organization
* Educate yourself on endangered species
* Learn more about the Endangered Species Act

NASCAR Day

Each year on the third Friday in May, NASCAR Day recognizes the drivers, celebrities, corporate partners, media, and the millions of fans. They all come together to raise funds for charitable causes across the nation.

“We believe our greatest asset is the power and passion of our NASCAR fans: passion both for the sport and for giving back. NASCAR Day is an annual celebration of this NASCAR spirit.”

The observance kicks off a fundraising event dedicated to making a difference in the lives of children.

HOW TO OBSERVE #NASCARDay

Learn more about the foundation and how it makes a difference in the lives of children. Donate to the cause and make a difference, too. Use #NASCARDay to post on social media.

NASCAR DAY HISTORY

National Armed Forces Day is a special holiday for people all over the world to come together and thank the men and women of the United States Armed Forces. First conceived by President Harry S. Truman, the holiday was established in 1949. The creation of a single day celebration for all five branches of the United States military made sense due to its recent unification under the Department of Defense. Today, Armed Forces Day is celebrated on the third Saturday of every May, this year falling on May 16. Be sure to mark your calendar & support our military!

HOW TO OBSERVE NATIONAL ARMED FORCES DAY

Go to a parade
National Armed Forces Day is traditionally celebrated with parades honoring military service. Open houses, air shows, and other local celebrations usually accompany a parade. There are numerous local parades across the United States; there is sure to be one near you!

Visit a public military display
Military or government personnel will routinely set up historical or educational displays for the public. Visiting a showcase like this can be eye opening as well as fun. This also gives civilians an opportunity to interact with military personnel face to face.

Visit a military memorial or cemetery
There are often special ceremonies at military memorials or cemeteries on National Armed Forces Day. Buglers perform the memorial song “Taps” in honor of fallen soldiers. This is a great way to show respect and appreciation for members of the military.

5 FUN FACTS ABOUT MILITARY UNIFORMS YOU NEVER KNEW

The army changed from green to blue
Current army troops wear blue instead of green as a tribute to George Washington and the men in his first command.

The Marine Corps wanted their uniforms to be unique
The Marine Corps went to the extent of including the letters “USMC” when designing their uniforms so that other branches wouldn’t be able to use their design.

Stripes on Navy uniforms were a fashion choice
It turns out there’s no significance to the three pin-stripes on the Navy jumper other than the fact that a majority of the men were decorating their collars with various types of white stripes — so it became part of the uniform.

Sailors wear bell-bottoms for a reason
The wide-bottomed pants that sailors famously wear are constructed that way so that they can easily be folded up when performing duties that involve them getting their feet wet.

The flag patch is backwards on purpose
The American flag patch on military uniforms has the stars on the right and stripes on the left in order to give the effect that it's blowing in the breeze.

WHY NATIONAL ARMED FORCES DAY IS IMPORTANT

The armed forces deserve our respect
Joining the US Armed Forces is an incredibly selfless act that deserves recognition. Soldiers and other military personnel risk their lives every day to keep citizens safe. This holiday is an opportunity for the average person to show support for that sacrifice.

It helps spread awareness and understanding
National Armed Forces Day is an opportunity to educate yourself or others. The holiday was originally designed to help citizens better understand the military and its role in our society. We can all do our part by spreading knowledge and understanding.

It is for all five branches of the military
The military is made up of five branches — the Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force, and Coast Guard. This holiday is intended for members of all five of these branches. Originally it was meant to replace separate branch appreciation holidays, but these are also still celebrated today.

National Barbecue Day

If the mouthwatering aromas wafting down the street haven’t told you, we will; May 16th is National Barbecue Day!

The purist in the world of barbecue either uses charcoal, wood, or gas and slow cooks the protein over indirect heat. While the type of protein and seasonings vary, each part of the country specializes in their own flavors and sauces.

For example, more tangy BBQ with a vinegar base can be found in North Carolina. South Carolina leans toward a sweeter sauce. The sauce can be applied thick or thin, giving it more of a glaze. Turn up the heat by adding spices and peppers. Smoking meat is another way to add flavor and tenderness, too.

Unique ingredients come from ketchup, mustard and Worcestershire, brown sugar, soy, and molasses. But you never know what combination of spices a barbecue master has in his or her repertoire. They’ve spent years perfecting their trade.

Pork is the original barbecue meat, but beef, chicken, lamb, and other proteins find their way into barbecue. If you think it’s just about the meat, you’d be wrong. The sides are just as important when it comes to good barbecue. An ideal coleslaw will pair well with a shredded bbq pork and make the perfect sandwich. The macaroni and cheese, potatoes and bbq baked beans – these are all staples of barbecue flavors.

National Learn to Swim Day

National Learn to Swim Day on the third Saturday in May is dedicated to educating parents and children about water safety. Before Memorial Day Weekend and the start of summer, it is an annual opportunity for families to learn the importance and benefits of learning to swim.

There are remarkable benefits to learning to swim. Besides the obvious safety benefit, other benefits include:

* We gain additional fitness opportunities when we learn to swim. No matter our age, learning to swim is an excellent cardiovascular exercise that is easy on the joints. It’s also a life long skill that many of us will appreciate as we age.
* As we learn to swim, we also gain social skills. Swimming is a social activity. It’s one that offers us opportunities to meet new people who often teach us new things.
* It’s a year-round exercise. Most fitness centers have pools and when the winters get long, what better way to burn off some energy than to take the kids to the pool.
* The younger we start, the more benefits we receive. From motor skills to stress relief to safety skills, swimming has it.
* When it comes to children with disabilities, swimming is easily accessible and adaptable.

While swimming is enjoyed by all ages the year-round, summer is a time when we take to the lakes, rivers and outdoor pools. Because of the risks involved when one is in the water, safety and knowledge, from the earliest age, is vital.

Honor Our LGBT Elders Day

Honor Our LGBT Elders Day on May 16th each year recognizes the thousands of people in the LGBT community who have paved the way for access and social acceptance.

The rights and acceptance that LGBTQ individuals have today did not occur in a vacuum or happen by accident. Our LGBT elders worked hard to gain rights and social acceptance.

The observance is an opportunity for community centers, faith organizations, educational institutions, and aging service providers to recognize the lives of LGBT older adults and honor their contributions to history.

HOW TO OBSERVE #HonorOurLGBTEldersDay

Organize an event giving LGBT elders an opportunity to speak about their experiences. Host a luncheon, tea, or seminar recognizing LGBT elders for their contributions in your community. Create a badge for social media and change your profile letting others know you honor your LBGT elders. Learn about the Stonewall Riots or the history of the National Gay and Lesbian Taskforce.

Discover more about those who came before you and share the history using #HonorOurLGBTEldersDay to post on social media.

National Coquilles Saint Jacques Day

National Coquilles Saint Jacques Day is observed annually on May 16th.

Also known as the Shell of St. James, the seafood scallop dish is usually made with a mixture of butter, cream, mushrooms, and cheese.

The scallop shell is a symbol of St. James, one of Jesus’ Twelve Apostles. Many legends surround the scallop shell and the symbolism associated with St. James. One suggests the scallop shell replaced bowls for water and food for pilgrims during their journey to Santiago de Compostela. It’s also suggested that St. James used the scalloped shell to beg for food and water during his pilgrimage. The scallop shell is also the symbol of baptism in Christianity.

Coquilles Saint Jacques can be made with either bay or sea scallops. White wine, brandy, or cognac are used to cook the scallops. Most recipes call for Gruyere cheese but swiss may be substituted. Different recipes call for a variety of seasonings ranging from cayenne, tarragon, and paprika to curry and parsley. The entire dish is baked in the scallop shell. If you don’t have access to scallop shells, individual ramekins work well, too. French cut green beans with almonds and fried onions complement the scallops nicely if it’s being served as the main course.

Almighty God,

We commend to your gracious care, protection and keeping all the men and women of our armed forces at home and abroad. Defend them daily with your heavenly grace, strengthen them in their trials and temptations, give them courage to face the perils which beset them, and grant them a sense of your abiding presence wherever they may be, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Ladies and Gentlemen of Texas,

My 3rd Cardiac Catheter Ablation Procedure on March 13th, 2020 seems to have permanently fixed my Cardiac Arrhythmia problem. I am keeping my fingers crossed and praying to God that there will be no reoccurrence of Ventricular Tachyarrhythmias and that my serious Cardiac Arrhythmia problem is indeed permanently gone.

Since then, I have been feeling much better and I am hoping that my ticker has been getting stronger as well. During my previous heart check up appointment in January, I was informed that there were slight improvements in my left and right ventricular heart functions but I am still suffering from Biventricular Congestive Heart Failure. Hopefully with my Cardiac Arrhythmia problem fixed, my former Athlete's Heart that was badly damaged by my first and second Heart Attacks last year will continue to recover and become stronger. My heart is now a former Athlete's Heart because I still have the Athlete's Heart condition but I am no longer an athlete. However, I would like to make a comeback as an endurance athlete in future if possible. :)

Speaking as a former elite endurance athlete, living with Biventricular Congestive Heart Failure is like running an endless marathon. I used to be hyperactive and an endless fountain of energy but I get tired easily now and I am persistently tired. :(

That said, I would GREATLY appreciate it if everyone could please continue to pray for my heart to continue to recover and become stronger and to have a steady heartbeat without any reoccurrence of Ventricular Tachyarrhythmias. I would like to thank everyone in Texas from the bottom of my still recovering heart for your prayers for my recovery. Thank you all. :)

Have an absolutely fantastic, healthy and safe day everyone!

Your Buddy Verner

I'm not sure Armed Forces day is that widely celebrated with Memorial Day right around the corner, and now there are 6 branches with the Space Force being included. I knew the Marine and Flag facts.

New Poll is up Buddies!

By the way Ladies and Gentlemen of Texas,

I deleted my previous poll but I would like everyone's opinion:

As a 2x Heart Attack Survivor, if by some miracle my badly damaged former Athlete's Heart recovers and becomes strong enough, should I try to make a comeback as an Elite Endurance Athlete?

Yes or No?

At the moment, I can only dream about it but I would like to run in Marathons again. Nyah ha ha ha! :)

Your Buddy Verner

I actually looked at what jobs were available to the enlisted in the Space Force. A lot of technical positions I don't qualify for.

As for Marathons, if you don't care about your finish time look into ones that give you plenty of time to complete. If your Doc gives the OK jog the Marathon instead of a flat out run.

For example, I've been eyeing the Gettysburg half marathon. You have 6 hours to complete the course. That's just over 2 miles an hour.

Trecdom2 wrote:I actually looked at what jobs were available to the enlisted in the Space Force. A lot of technical positions I don't qualify for.

will they have a battle that you have to avoid as you jog through and then after the race you listen to someone give Lincoln's speech?

We are not the people to ask. The only one that can answer that is your cardiologist and/or your doctor.

Isn't the Space Force like any other service? Don't they send you to school?

A New Home for XKI Fast Roleplay

With the dramatic influx of new nations to the game after the Reddit boom earlier this year, the Council of Nine sought a creative solution to the accommodation of those newer nations that crave a quicker style of RP than TGs and the forum could allow. Not wanting ongoing RP to choke the regional RMB, the decision was reached to create an RMB-only region, with an embassy and RMB access exclusive to 10000 Islands residents.

Thus, A Taco Archipelago was born, and just in time for the latest wave of new nations in April, courtesy of Youtuber Drew. After a short period of transition and a few growing pains, the new region’s RMB is thriving with RP activity, international intrigue, murders, poisonings, skirmishes , and trade agreements. Lore in the region is growing at an exponential rate, and with such easy access and a welcoming core of RPers, early results suggest A Taco Archipelago will become a significant part of the 10000 Islands landscape.

10000 Islands Population Explosion

First and foremost, congratulations and sincere thanks must be extended to 10000 Islands’ exceptional Recruiting Team all of whom burned the midnight oil throughout April to tackle both of the Youtube waves of new nations to the game. The results of those efforts speak for themselves. At the start of April, XKI’s population was 1464 nations, by the end of the month 2761 nations were calling XKI home. Total new nations joining 10000 Islands during April was 1297. While there will no doubt be a downturn as the uncommitted nations begin to CTE (any day now) the region is anticipating good retention, thanks to a broad scope of engaging regional activities.

Thank you Trec Buddy and good luck in the Gettysburg half marathon if you decide to go for it. :)

National Idaho Day

On May 17, National Idaho Day recognizes the 43rd state to join the union.

A wave of settlement made its way into The Gem State following in the footsteps of the Corps of Discovery. Miners, traders, and missionaries made their way West into the territory of the Nez Perce, Shoshone and Bannock peoples.

The state is dominated by the Rocky Mountains range. Snake River winds its way through the rugged western border of the state carving the deepest river gorge in North America. Hells Canyon National Recreation Area provides spectacular views of the dramatic landscapes the Snake River took thousands of years to sculpt.

Idaho doesn’t lack scenery. Take any byway, and the next turn will reveal a whole new vista to observe. For example, Craters of the Moon National Monument & Preserve will seem to erupt before your eyes. This vast lava field formed from ancient volcanic activity.

While exploring Idaho, don’t forget to investigate Hagerman’s Fossil Beds. Excavations of these well-preserved fossils have fascinated paleontologists for generations. If there is an equine interest, be sure to study the Hagerman Horse, too!

Beyond the fossils, entire cityscapes of stone appear. The City of Rocks encountered by native peoples, pioneers and modern-day adventurers became a kind of waystation or landmark for those who were westward bound.

Inventors seem to like Idaho. Beyond the list of patents for improvements to printing presses and railroad technology, Idaho is the home of the television. Philo Farnsworth invented the necessary technology that brought the small screen to the mass market.

National Take Your Parents to the Playground Day

Kids, you work hard every day. It’s time to show your parents just how hard you work. After all, your primary job is to play, and the third Sunday in May is National Take Your Parents to the Playground Day!

Outdoor play offers the obvious benefit of physical activity, helping to build strong muscles and bones. It also engages the child’s imagination, which contributes to developing creativity as well as self-confidence. But, a child’s work doesn’t stop there. Playing with others includes games, focus, and attention. As a result, playing teaches leadership and negotiation skills. The more children play, the healthier, smarter, and happier they are.

Include all these benefits with the celebration, and the value of play is increased exponentially because the whole family is involved.

HOW TO OBSERVE #TakeYourParentsToThePlaygroundDay

Find the closest playground, and take your parents to work. Use #TakeYourParentsToThePlaygroundDay to share on social media.

NATIONAL TAKE YOUR PARENTS TO THE PLAYGROUND DAY HISTORY

PDPlay first founded Take Your Parents to the Playground Day on April 4, 2009, to motivate children to get outdoors and take their parents to their workplace. Take Your Parents to the Playground Day follows Children & Nature Awareness Month, an event established by the Children & Nature Network (C&NN) to call attention to the importance of providing opportunities for all children to experience frequent, regular play in natural outdoor settings. National Take Your Parents to the Playground Day offers an excellent opportunity to continue the initiative’s message with families throughout the year.

Vincent's Sunday Surprise Beverage Bonanza

Howdy Dudes and Dudettes of Texas!

Today’s Sunday Surprise Beverage is Make –Your – Own - Beverage Day! I’ve got lots of Large Boxes full of drink making ingredients stacked up right here and I’m going to beam them directly into the home of every Texan in Texas. Everyone will receive a Large Box and it’ll materialize on the table closest to you. With all the drink ingredients in your box you can make Non-alcoholic Tropical Fizzes, Blackberry Shrubs, Cranberry Limeades and Tomato-Lime Sippers. There’s enough ingredients to make 3 glasses of each drink and I’ve included an Instructional Guide CD to walk you through the drink making process. You can keep the Instructional Guide CD as my gift to you:

Make Your Own Beverage Drink Making Guide:

Non-alcoholic Tropical Fizz

Cranberry Limeade

Tomato-Lime Sipper

When blending drinks in your blender always add your ice at the end so it doesn’t jam up the blender. Also if you’ve got alcohol in your house and you desire an alcoholic drink just mix your own booze into the beverages.

And today I’ve included a large bucket of Bacon Cheddar Cheese flavored popcorns in everyone’s boxes for y’all to snack on too! :)

I hope y’all enjoy today’s Sunday Surprise Snack and Beverages Texans. Yeehaw! :)

Vincent
