“We must find time to stop and thank the people who make a difference in our lives AND As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them.” - John F. Kennedy

“Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life. It turns what we have into enough, and more. It turns denial into acceptance, chaos to order, confusion to clarity. It can turn a meal into a feast, a house into a home, a stranger into a friend. Gratitude makes sense of our past, brings peace for today and creates a vision for tomorrow.” - Melody Beattie

Thanksgiving Day/Turkey Day

What is Thanksgiving?

America’s Thanksgiving holiday, born in the 1500s, mythologized in 1621, and observed even during the bleakest hours of the Civil War, now stands as one of the nation’s most anticipated and beloved days — celebrated each year on the fourth Thursday in November (November 28, 2019). Perhaps no other nonsectarian holiday has more tradition. Family, friends, food, and football have come to symbolize Thanksgiving — a rare celebratory holiday without an established gift-giving component. Instead the day urges all of us to be grateful for things we do have.
History of Thanksgiving
This story doesn’t necessarily start with Pilgrims.

Evidence shows that Spanish explorers and settlers held thanksgiving services during the late 1500s in what is now Florida and New Mexico. Thanksgivings also took place in what became the Commonwealth of Virginia as early as 1607, with the first permanent settlement of Jamestown holding a thanksgiving in 1610.

The ‘First’ Thanksgiving

It wasn’t until a decade later that the Plymouth settlers, known as Pilgrims, arrived in the New World. They celebrated at Plymouth for three days after their first harvest in 1621. The gathering included 50 people who were on the Mayflower (all who remained of the 100 who had landed) and 90 Native Americans. The feast was cooked by the four adult Pilgrim women who survived their first winter in the New World, along with young daughters and other servants.

Revolutionary times

During the war the Continental Congress appointed one or more thanksgiving days each year, each time recommending to the executives of the various states the observance of these days in their states. George Washington, leader of the revolutionary forces, proclaimed a Thanksgiving in December 1777 as a victory celebration honoring the defeat of the British at Saratoga.

The Continental-Confederation Congress, the legislative body that governed the United States from 1774 to 1789, issued several “national days of prayer, humiliation, and thanksgiving.” This would eventually manifest itself in the established American observances of Thanksgiving and the National Day of Prayer today.

In 1789 New Jersey congressman Elias Boudinot proposed that the House and Senate jointly ask President Washington to proclaim a day of thanksgiving for “the many signal favors of Almighty God.” Washington then created the first U.S. government-mandated Thanksgiving Day. It read in part: “Now therefore I do recommend and assign Thursday the 26th day of November next to be devoted by the People of thee States to the service of that great and glorious Being, who is the beneficent Author of all the good that was, that is, or that will be.”

The holiday would remain inconsistent for decades.

Civil War

President Lincoln, the war, proclaimed a national Thanksgiving Day in 1863, to be celebrated on November 26 — the final Thursday of the month. Secretary of State William H. Seward wrote the proclamation that read in part:

“In the midst of a civil war of unequalled magnitude and severity, which has sometimes seemed to foreign States to invite and to provoke their aggression, peace has been preserved with all nations, order has been maintained, the laws have been respected and obeyed, and harmony has prevailed everywhere except in the theatre of military conflict.

“I do therefore invite my fellow citizens in every part of the United States, and also those who are at sea and those who are sojourning in foreign lands, to set apart and observe the last Thursday of November next, as a day of Thanksgiving and Praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the Heavens.”

The U.S. has observed Thanksgiving ever since.

Future presidents followed Lincoln’s example of annually declaring the final Thursday in November to be Thanksgiving. But in 1939, President Franklin Roosevelt declared November’s fourth Thursday as Thanksgiving rather than the fifth one. FDR thought an earlier Thanksgiving would give merchants a longer period to sell goods before Christmas — and help bring the country out of the Depression. A 1942 law — making the fourth Thursday a federal holiday — has stood ever since

Thanksgiving 2019 timeline
1939
'Franksgiving'

President Franklin Roosevelt, in an effort to jolt the nation out of the Great Depression, moved the holiday (potentially) up a week — to the fourth Thursday in November. Thus the holiday can fall as early as November 22 — guaranteeing merchants as much as a week of extra shopping time before Christmas.

1863
Wartime celebration

President Lincoln, during the Civil War, urges Americans to ask God to “commend to “heal the wounds of the nation.” He schedules Thanksgiving for the final Thursday in November. Magazine editor Sarah Josepha Hale, known as “the Mother of Thanksgiving,” had encouraged politicians to do this since 1827.

1789
A revolutionary idea

President Washington issues the U.S. government’s first Thanksgiving proclamation — calling on Americans to express gratitude for the new nation and the Constitution.

1621
Pilgrim feast

Plymouth colonists and Native Americans from the Wampanoag tribe share an autumn harvest feast. It’s one of the first Thanksgiving celebrations in the colonies — and the one most Americans (especially kids) look to as the beginning of the modern tradition.

1565
America’s (other) first Thanksgiving

Religious scholars argue that Catholic Spanish explorers held a “Mass of Thanksgiving,” in Saint Augustine, Florida — the oldest settlement in the U.S. This would be the first communal thanksgiving celebration in the first permanently settled European colony on American soil.

Thanksgiving 2019 Activities

Volunteer
Before sitting down to enjoy a nice warm meal at home, invite the family to join you to serve the community by volunteering at a local shelter. It's a great way to give back to those less fortunate and provides an opportunity for the whole family to do something good.

Bake a pie
Pies are a one of the classic Thanksgiving staples. Pecan, pumpkin, apple, cherry — you literally cannot go wrong. Preheat the oven, throw on an apron, and get cooking!

Start a take-out tradition
Cooking a Thanksgiving meal can take hours. Lots of restaurants serve Thanksgiving dinners. Or start a new tradition by ordering take out! It can be the Chinese restaurant down the street, Indian curry, even your favorite pizza place. And tip well! The day is all about being grateful.

Thanksgiving 2019 FAQs

Why is Thanksgiving so late 2019?
Future presidents followed Lincoln’s example of annually declaring the final Thursday in November to be Thanksgiving. But in 1939, President Franklin Roosevelt declared November’s fourth Thursday as Thanksgiving rather than the fifth one. FDR thought an earlier Thanksgiving would give merchants a longer period to sell goods before Christmas — and help bring the country out of the Depression. A 1942 law — making the fourth Thursday a federal holiday — has stood ever since.

Why is Thanksgiving on the 4th Thursday in 2019?
President Franklin Roosevelt declared November’s fourth Thursday as Thanksgiving rather than the fifth one. FDR thought an earlier Thanksgiving would give merchants a longer period to sell goods before Christmas — and help bring the country out of the Depression.

What week number is Thanksgiving 2019?
Thanksgiving 2019 is on week number 48

Why We Love Thanksgiving 2019

The food
Traditional Thanksgiving dinners generally includes turkey, mashed potatoes with gravy, buttered vegetables, warm pumpkin pie, and other indulgent foods. But honestly, anything goes as we approach the 2020s. Vegan’s just fine too.

Family and friends
Thanksgiving is a time when friends and family gather to express gratitude. For some people, it's an occasion to be with family you don't see often. For others, it's a time to get all their friends (Friendsgiving!) together for food and fun.

4-day weekend
Americans look forward to their extended holiday weekend right around the time Halloween ends. Thanksgiving Day starts a mini work/school vacation that also includes Black Friday and Small Business Saturday.

National Family Health History Day

Thanksgiving Day is not only a time to gather with friends and family to eat a sumptuous meal and count blessings. It’s also National Family Health History Day, an annual event that also takes place on Thanksgiving. The idea is to take a day when everyone in your family is assembled and discuss the family health history, specifically any occurrence of colorectal cancer. Healthcare providers encourage you to use this day to share and care about this and other serious diseases.

National Family Health History Day timeline

November 2017
Two organizations merged to fight colorectal and colon cancers

The Colon Cancer Alliance merged with the Colorectal Cancer Alliance to provide a supportive network and seek research funding to find a cure.

2004
Thanksgiving became a vehicle for family health discussions
The Surgeon General declared Thanksgiving as Family Health History Day. It's a reminder to assess health risks for illnesses known to run in families — like high blood pressure, diabetes and cancer.

1980s
Video chip technology paved the way for cancer surgery improvements
Video chip technology was introduced for laparoscopy, providing a major progressive step in colorectal cancer surgery

1960s
The colonoscope was introduced
The colonoscope was developed thanks to fiber optics and engineering advances, making it easier to see signs of cancer in the body.

How to Observe National Family Health History Day

Draw a genealogy tree
Grab some colored pens and have poster board ready. This is a great day to put together a genealogy tree that adds information about the family's health history. Get the elders to provide as much knowledge as they can.

Put together a binder of family health history
Do it "old school" and put everything in a binder. Make colorful copies and distribute to everyone so all the information is accessible and easy to read for family members as well as health care providers.

Assign everyone to write down any health concerns to share
Before Thanksgiving, ask every family member (even the little ones) to write down whatever questions or concerns they have about the family's health history. You would be surprised at how curious children are about family history. On National Family Health History Day, take the questions out and start discussing.

5 Reasons Why Families Need To Know Their Health History

Some family members may have died young
If you have chronic conditions that run in your family, it's important to discuss the family's health history, especially if there were family members who died before the conditions became evident.

Many families tend to get these diseases
The most common conditions that run in families are heart disease, diabetes, and cancer (including colon, stomach, endometrium, lung, bladder, breast, and skin) as well as high blood pressure.

European royal families were cursed with hemophilia
Many European royal families either had hemophilia, a blood clotting disorder known as the “Royal” disease, or carried the gene — including Queen Victoria and many of her descendants — as well as the son of Czar Nicholas II of Russia.

Life span can be hereditary
Research shows that someone’s life span is mainly determined by a combination of genetics and environmental factors.

Why National Family Health History Day is Important

It's about family

Family time is special and Thanksgiving is one of the most wonderful days of the years simply because everyone comes together to share a meal, watch a game, and rehash old family stories. But this year on Thanksgiving, also known as National Family Health History Day, spend some time educating each other. Young people often don't realize how important it is to know about hereditary factors that could cause trouble down the road when they marry or have children. This year, in between the pecan pie and kickoff, have a serious discussion about your family health history.

Know the risk factors for colorectal cancer

Colorectal cancer is a cancer of the bowels. It is the second leading cause of cancer death in women and the third leading cause of cancer death for men. Some of the risk factors include obesity, diets high in red meat, age, sex, and most importantly, a family history of colorectal cancer. That history is increased when a first-degree relative including a parent, sibling, or child is affected. That's why it's so important to discuss family health history when the entire family is present.

It's preventable

It's important to note that many of the risk factors for colorectal cancer are preventable. However, the best way to get the jump on this disease is to have a colonoscopy. Screening guidelines vary for those with high risk, but most healthcare providers recommend earlier cancer screenings, especially when there is a family history of this specific kind of cancer.

National Day of Mourning

What is the National Day of Mourning
The National Day of Mourning takes place on the fourth Thursday of November. If this date sounds familiar to you, it’s because the fourth Thursday of November also coincides with Thanksgiving in the U.S. Every year on the National Day of Mourning, Native American people in New England gather together to protest. To them, Thanksgiving serves as a reminder of the unjust treatment that Native Americans have received since the 1620 Plymouth landing.

History of the National Day of Mourning
The National Day of Mourning reminds us all that Thanksgiving is only part of the story. Native Americans, since 1970, have gathered at noon on Cole’s Hill in Plymouth, Massachusetts, to commemorate a National Day of Mourning on Thanksgiving Day.

Pilgrims landed in Plymouth and established the first colony in 1620. As such, it’s the oldest municipality in New England. Many Native Americans, however, don’t celebrate the arrival of the Pilgrims and other European settlers. Thanksgiving, to them, is a brutal reminder of “the genocide of millions of Native people, the theft of Native lands, and the relentless assault on Native culture.”

They participate as a way to honor Native ancestors and the struggles of Native peoples to survive today. “It is a day of remembrance and spiritual connection as well as a protest of the racism and oppression which Native Americans continue to experience.”

The United American Indians of New England (UAINE) sponsors this event. They maintain that the Pilgrims arrived in North America and claimed tribal land for their own, as opposed to establishing a mutually beneficial relationship with the local inhabitants. UAINE members believe that these settlers “introduced sexism, racism, anti-homosexual bigotry, jails, and the class system.”

The National Day of Mourning generally begins at noon and includes a march through the historic district of Plymouth. While the UAINE encourages people of all backgrounds to attend the protests, only Native speakers are invited to give these speeches about the past, as well as current obstacles their people have overcome. Guests are asked to bring non-alcoholic beverages, desserts, fresh fruits and vegetables, or pre-cooked items. The protest is open to anyone, and has attracted other minority activists.

National Day of Mourning timeline
1998
No permit needed

UAINE receives permission from local authorities to march in protest without having to obtain a permit.

1997
Protests got violent

State troopers use force against protesters who gathered together to observe the 28th annual National Day of Mourning.

1970
National Day of Mourning began

The first annual protest for the National Day of Mourning takes place.

1620
Pilgrims arrived

English separatist Puritans, who had broken away from the Church of England, land at Plymouth Rock. Today we refer to them as Pilgrims.

National Day of Mourning FAQs

What really happened in 1621?
The Pilgrims celebrated their first successful harvest by firing guns and cannons in Plymouth. The noise alarmed ancestors of the Wampanoag Nation who went to investigate. That is how native people came to be present at the first Thanksgiving

Are federal offices closed on a national day of mourning?
U.S. government offices are closed on the National Day of Mourning due to the Thanksgiving holiday.

What happens on the National Day of Mourning?
Native Americans and supporters gather in Plymouth to “mourn our ancestors and the genocide of our peoples and the theft of our lands.”

How to Observe National Day of Mourning

Brush up on your history
Do you know much about the first Thanksgiving? Do some research online, stop by your local library, or watch a documentary that will help give you a better understanding of what Native Americans actually went through.

Learn more about the United American Indians of New England (UAINE)
UAINE is responsible for helping the National Day of Mourning protest take shape. To observe this important day, take some time to learn about about the UAINE. It's a fascinating organization that has done a great deal to promote better treatment for the Native American people.

Attend a protest
Protesters gather on Cole's Hill, a location overlooking Plymouth Rock, in Massachusetts. Everyone is welcome to observe these gatherings, and recently, other minority groups have started to become involved in the events of this day.

4 Reasons To Thank Native Americans

They've been here a while
Native Americans have existed in what is now known as the United States since 12,000 BC.

Thank you for your service
Although they were not considered American citizens, over 8,000 Native Americans served in the military in World War I.

Your great-grandma is who?
Many of the first families who settled in Virginia trace their roots directly back to Pocahontas.

An important vocabulary lesson
A bunch of Native American words have made their way into the English language; for example, coyote, tomato, poncho, potato, and chia.

Why National Day of Mourning is Important
It serves as an important history lesson

Textbooks often glaze over the unjust treatment of Native Americans. The National Day of Mourning, however, is a reminder that the people native to the Americas have been the recipients of a great deal of unfair treatment. It's important to discuss.

It's a time to come together
For protesters, the National Day of Mourning serves as a time to rally together to advocate for what they believe in. UAINE has worked to improve relations between the government and native people.

It shifts our attention away from turkey
Yes, Thanksgiving can be a great day filled with tons of good food and time spent with loving family and friends. However, the mission behind the National Day of Mourning is to highlight that the Thanksgiving holiday is actually quite painful for some people. For quite a few Native Americans in New England, Thanksgiving marks a time when their ancestors were treated poorly.

I saw and liked the Gretchen of the Beer Garden card but I'm buying it from the Market instead of selecting it as one of my prizes.

Happy Thanksgiving and have an absolutely fantastic day everyone!

Your Buddy Verner

Happy Thanksgiving Texas! We hope everybody gets some good food today and gets to kick back and relax (that goes for our EuroTexan buddies as well)! Don't forget to take a minute to reflect on all you have to be thankful for, like family, friends, life, NationStates, football, whatever (not necessarily in that order)! Gobble, Gobble, Gobble!

Anybody going off the turkey playbook? For the last ten years or so, we have grown weary of years and years of turkey. We are giving turkeys a break this year and are going for a Genuine USDA Prime Standing Rib Roast complete with au jus, mashed potatoes, green beans, croissants, and freshly-made cookies and brownies! But first, Bloody Marys as we finish the prep work and watch the parade!

How about you? What are you having for Thanksgiving Texas?

When I lived in Colorado we had a chicken coop. Living in that coop were nine chickens, all named "Grace." There were four turkeys named Christmas, Thanksgiving, Next Christmas, and Next Thanksgiving.

The kids tended the coop. They gathered the eggs, kept it clean, and grew attached to the birds. Other than Thanksgiving who became mean as a snake, to the best of my knowledge all those birds died of natural causes.

So much for the naming strategy...

Black Friday

What is Black Friday?
Black Friday 2019 has cash registers ringing every November 29. It’s the day of the year when retailers finally start generating profit, thus going from “being in the red” to “being in the black.” Get out your pocketbook and prepare to shell out some cash, because the Friday after Thanksgiving is the biggest shopping day of the year!

History of Black Friday
First, there’s Thanksgiving — a day to be grateful for all life’s blessings. The next day, Black Friday, encourages you to give way to your greed by spending as much money as possible. Welcome to the official start of the holiday season! But the story of Black Friday is full of “official” and unofficial versions of its origins, starting with the name.

Black Friday originally referred to September 24,1869 when a scheme to manipulate America’s gold markets backfired resulting in numerous bankruptcies across the country. Even more troubling is the unsubstantiated story that southern slave owners allegedly got a “good deal” if they bought slaves on the Friday after Thanksgiving — “Black Friday,” indeed!

But, the story that’s most well-known about Black Friday is that retailers marked the day when filled coffers from holiday shoppers helped businesses go from being “in the red” to “in the black.” Although popular, this story is also not quite accurate. So, what is the actual story of Black Friday? We have to go to Philadelphia for that.

Philadelphia cops complained about “Black Friday” when they were stuck working off days and overtime the day after Thanksgiving. Packed downtown streets with hordes of shoppers, tourists, and fans in town for the next day’s Army-Navy game, meant that Black Friday was a haven for shoplifters as well as a crowd-controlling nightmare for the police.

Unfortunately, the idea that Black Friday was also a retailers’ headache did not entice Philly’s shoppers. By 1961, Philadelphia retailers decided “if you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em,” turning a negative into a positive by way of reinvention. In the 1980s, “Black Friday” became synonymous as a day for big deals in national retail. Today, Black Friday invites you to shop ‘til you drop for the best bargains of the year.

2017

September 24, 1869
The first time the term, “Black Friday,” is used

When the bottom falls out of the gold markets due to manipulations by two shady Wall Street financiers, “Black Friday” is used for the first time to describe the day that launched bankruptcies affecting many of America’s economic sectors.

Black Friday Traditions

Waiting in line over night

Many people carb up on Thanksgiving dinner for the long, dark, cold wait in line outside their favorite store to get in when the doors open on Black Friday.

Aggressive Shopping

If you’ve ever seen the local news reports of people strong arming grandmas for 4K TVs then you understand the tradition of aggressive shopping on Black Friday.

Waiting for Cyber Monday

One of the best Black Friday traditions is browsing Amazon in the comfort of your own home in anticipation of Cyber Monday while watching other people trample each other to get the last BOGO Apple TV. Yes, it’s dark. Yes, it’s satisfying. Congrats on your life choices.

Black Friday 2019 FAQs
When is Black Friday 2019?

This year, Black Friday takes place for 24 hours on November 29, the day after Thanksgiving.

What is Black Friday?
Black Friday is the day after Thanksgiving when retailers offer some of the best deals and lowest prices of the year.

Do you have to wait for Black Friday to get the deals?
Although merchandisers have gotten adept at tempting the public with “Black Friday” deals prior to the actual day after Thanksgiving, as a rule of thumb, the deepest discounts and best deals are on the official day itself.

Black Friday 2019 Activities

Create a new tradition
Establish an annual tradition with friends or family members. Whether it means waking each other up at 4 a.m. to hit the stores at 6 a.m. or staying home in your pajamas and eating Thanksgiving leftovers together, Black Friday is the perfect opportunity to start a new yearly practice.

Donate winter clothes to people in need
Don't want to shop on Black Friday? Gather up all the winter items you no longer use and deliver them to your local shelter or thrift store. With winter just around the corner, needy families will be grateful to receive the extra help.

Wait in line with family and friends
If you’re really not looking forward to a cold, overnight stay in a tent but you can’t watch the Super Bowl without a new 55 inch flat screen; get friends and fam to hang out with you! Bring some playing cards, dominoes or chess, crank up the music and lay out a spread of Thanksgiving leftovers for a fun, new Black Friday tradition!

I must admit I completely forgot about this game for a while. This is an older nation I've just revived, but I think I'll stick around in Texas again, hopefully for longer this time.

Welcome Back!

Heads Up everyone! Go to Trading Cards and view your own card and you'll see this:

"Update Your Season 2 Card

For a limited time, you may sync your Trading Card to the current state of your nation! Inscribe your card with your current:

Flag
Pretitle / Classification
Government Type
Slogan
Badges
Stats

You cannot modify region nor card rarity type. Cards cannot be generated for nations that did not exist at the time of the Season 2 preview.

You may do this as many times as you like, but once the preview ends, the card's state is permanent!"

From the News:
We have 5 days to get a sneak peek at what our new card looks like and update our card before it's permanently inscribed.

To update your card:

1. Set your nation's flag, slogan, etc, just the way you like in your Settings.

2. Go to Your Deck and click View Card: (Your nation). It's on the right-hand side of the page, near the top.

3. If you're looking at your own Season Two card, just above it, you'll see a special Season Two Preview notice that invites you to inscribe the card using your nation's current state. Do that!

National Computer Security Day

What is National Computer Security Day?
National Computer Security Day demands our attention every November 30 because cyber security affects everything from where we bank and how we spend our money to who we elect to public office. We certainly don’t want a replay of MyDoom, the worst email virus in history, which caused $38.5 billion in damage, so let’s get educated on staying safe online!

National Computer Security Day History
It seems like everyday we hear about breaches in cyber security. Keeping people and companies safe online is a top priority all over the world. It’s something that stays uppermost in our minds on National Computer Security Day. The story of National Computer Security Day is an interesting one.

On November 2, 1988, Cornell University researchers uncovered an unknown virus lurking in their computer systems. Within four hours of discovery, the “Morris worm” virus invaded several other university systems as well as the ARPANET, an early version of today’s internet.

Six days later, two computer experts with the U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) recommended assembling a “National Computer Infection Action Team” (NCAT) to respond 24/7, 365 to these kinds of attacks. On November 14, the Software Engineering Institute (SEI), a research center connected with Carnegie Mellon University, set up the Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT).

In 1988, the National Computer Security Day sprang out of the Washington, D.C., chapter of the Association for Computing Machinery’s (ACM) Special Interest Group on Security, Audit, and Control as a way to raise awareness about cyber crimes and viruses. According to a 2004 “Networld” article, “November 30 was chosen for CSD so that attention on computer security would remain high during the holiday season – when people are typically more focused on the busy shopping season than thwarting security threats.” By 2003, CERT and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security joined forces to create the National Cyber Awareness System.

Whether we’re talking about National Computer Security Day or National Cybersecurity Awareness Month also in October, the goals are essentially the same. Each person must be proactive to protect their online security. Use this month to find out all you can about common sense ways to stay safe in cyberspace.

National Computer Security Day FAQs

What is Cyber Security Awareness?
Cyber Security Awareness means taking a proactive approach to protecting your identity and your assets online.

What is Cyber Security Awareness Training?
Cyber Security Awareness Training gives employees good and practical “rules of the road” for keeping corporate information technology safe on the job.

How do you create a security awareness program?
By keeping the training brief and to the point, as well as suggesting things employees should do themselves to reduce human errors; you can create an effective program.

How to Observe National Computer Security Day

Create a strong password
Lucky for you, we’ve got some tips. In computer security, length matters. Passwords that are 6 characters are easier to hack, especially if they're only made up of lowercase letters. To beef up your password, weave a 9-character combination of uppercase letters, symbols and numbers. Lastly, avoid using the same password for every account.

Update spyware and malware protection software
First, check to see if your operating system is up-to-date. If that's set, update your protection software. Run a scan and don't forget to invite your other devices to the party. Phones and tablets are also major security risks, so be diligent.

Encrypt and backup your data
Encrypt your data to create the brainiest of all brainteasers. But keep this in mind: even the best brain teaser can be cracked. That’s why it's still important to back up your info on either the cloud or an external hard drive. (Just make sure that everything stays encrypted.)

Why National Computer Security Day is Important
It reminds us that we play an active role in computer security

Whether it's a bank account or pics that should never have taken, your personal life is, well, personal. This day is a reminder that we deserve to have our privacy protected and we can't rely on programmers alone to do the job. Regularly updating antivirus software, using strong passwords and encrypting data are all measures we can take on our own. Make sure your records of the “bad old days” stay in your memories — not in a stranger's news feed!

It reinforces that our security issues affect others
This holiday reminds us that viruses spread. If you link an infected device to someone else’s device, you put their security at risk. From there, it doesn't take much to compromise an entire network.

It helps us appreciate security systems engineers
Security systems engineers are unsung heroes. Staying one step ahead of hackers is challenging, especially when technology changes so quickly. Computer Security Day is the perfect time to show your appreciation for the work of these professional hacker-fighters!

Small Business Saturday

What is Small Business Saturday?
Small Business Saturday® falls on the Saturday after Thanksgiving — November 30, 2019. In the age of Black Friday and Cyber Monday, it’s easy to skip over the mom-and-pop shop for the big box store or online retailer. But SBS sponsors hope you don’t forget about smaller neighborhood shops.
History of Small Business Saturday
Oddly enough, American Express, a U.S. corporation with $37 billion in revenue in 2018, started Small Business Saturday in 2010. (Yes, most small retailers do accept credit cards.) The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) joined as a cosponsor five years later. SBS has become an important part of how many small businesses launch their busiest shopping season.

According to the 2018 SBS Consumer Insights Survey, total reported spending among U.S. consumers who said they shopped at independent retailers and restaurants on the day reached a record high of approximately $17.8 billion. The same survey reported that more than 70% of consumers are now aware of the Small Business Saturday initiative. Based on this annual survey over the years, SBS spending has now reached a reported estimate of $103 billion since the day began.

SBA, Women Impacting Public Policy (WIPP), and American Express hope to drive traffic and revenue to America’s 30 million independent businesses through Small Business Saturday events.

The U.S. Small Business Administration, created in 1953, helps Americans start, build, and grow businesses. It’s an independent agency of the federal government built to aid, counsel, assist and protect the interests of small business concerns, to preserve free competitive enterprise and to maintain and strengthen the overall economy of our nation.

Among other things, the SBA provides small businesses with access to capital, entrepreneurial development, government contracting, and advocacy. Perhaps most importantly, the SBA offers free counseling and low-cost training to new entrepreneurs and established small businesses in over 1,800 locations.

Small Business Saturday timeline

2018
Record spending

U.S. consumers report spending around $17 billion at independent retailers and restaurants on Small Business Saturday. The nine-day SBS total (since 2010) reaches an estimated $103 billion.

2013
Neighbors helping neighbors

More than 1,400 individuals and organizations sign up as “Neighborhood Champions” to rally their communities with events and activities on Small Business Saturday. The number grows to 7,500 by 2018.

2011
Help from the feds

The U.S. Senate unanimously passes a resolution in support of the day and officials in all 50 states participate. President Obama even adds a shout-out.

2010
Digging out from recession

American Express — following the 2008 market crash — launches Small Business Saturday® to encourage people to “shop small” and bring more dollars to small entrepreneurs.

Small Business Saturday Statistics
99.7% of all U.S. businesses are small businesses

The land of opportunity and entrepreneurs, 99.7% of all businesses in the U.S. are small businesses. When we think small businesses, our minds might automatically wander to the mom-and-pop shop on the corner of the block, but what about the ever-famous-ever-growing Silicon Valley? A large amount of small businesses within the United States are startups and tech-based, popping up in California, New York, and everywhere in between.

64% of new jobs created in the U.S. between 1993 and 2011 were from small businesses

A business can’t run without the people keeping it afloat, and with all of the new startups being created almost every day, it’s no wonder small businesses account for employing the most people in the United States! The inception of each new business creates a bunch of new jobs along with it, needing someone with the appropriate skills to fill the position. So when you support small businesses, you support the many people helping to keep it running.

Small businesses donate 250% more to non-profits and community causes

Small businesses have a personal connection to their community, as their companies are usually supported by the locals surrounding them. Donating to charity allows them to give back to the community that gives to them, as well as getting some philanthropy points and spreading awareness of their business’s existence and values.

Small Business Saturday FAQs
How can I promote my Small Business Saturday?

You can start by spreading the word early, working with a local cause, and setting special business hours for November 30 only.

What is the purpose of Small Business Saturday?
SBS encourages consumers to keep it close to home when buying gifts this holiday season. Spending money locally helps everyone in the community prosper.

How did Small Business Saturday start?
American Express began SBS in 2010 as a way provide a jolt to local businesses still hurting from the Great Recession.

Small Business Saturday Activities

Go On A Local Shopping Spree
Many shoppers opt for big box stores on Black Friday, knowing that there'll be sales on common holiday gifts. Small businesses sometimes offer many similar discounts — but without the marketing dollars to display the price cuts, they're often left out in the cold. If you were planning on purchasing a TV this holiday season, try calling your local electronics store to see if they're offering any discounts first.

Talk About It
Social media is a wonderful way to share our daily lives with friends, but sometimes, letting them know about a good deal from an e-commerce giant or a big box store can feel like advertising. With small businesses, it's different: Instead of contributing to some corporation's bottom line, you can rest easy knowing that you're helping a neighbor succeed.

Make It A Habit
Small Business Saturday only lasts for one day, but you're now acquainted with your local shops. Don't let another year pass before your next visit! For small businesses to succeed, they need our support through the year.

Why We Love Small Business Saturday

Convenience
Unless you live in a major metropolitan area, chances are that the closest stores to your home are small businesses. Nearly wherever you are, they're close enough that you can just run up the block to reach them.

They try harder
Local stores are more likely to make sure you leave happy, and might even make an effort to keep your favorite items in stock.

Get To Know The Neighborhood
Unlike their big box brethren, each small business will be different from the next. Getting to know your local small businesses can be a great way to get to know your neighborhood and community!

An unfunded federal mandate that crippled small to medium sized school districts across this nation for the next decade as they shuffled funds around, canceled building projects and upgrades, increased class sizes, stopped shop and trade classes, laid off teachers, and eliminated extracurricular programs to pay for it. A sterling example of letting feelings override the common sense of outlay vs. benefit.

All of these nationwide builders are trouble. When building from scratch hire a local builder with established roots in the community. Do not under any circumstances agree to "binding arbitration" in lieu of a real court solution if things go south.

***** Texas Saturday Breakfast *****

YeeHaw! It is Saturday Breakfast Time again! For those of you still suffering from tryptophan overdose, it will be a light one. Today is Thanksgiving Leftover Saturday Breakfast! We will start off with a classic straightforward Turkey & Swiss Omelet made with shredded turkey and shredded Swiss cheese snuggled in a blanket of Texas Grade-A farm-fresh scrambled eggs. Turkey Giblet Gravy is served on the side if you want to kick it up a notch and smother your omelet. Want something a little spicier? How about the Turkey & Egg breakfast taco? It is more shredded turkey scrambled into eggs along with salsa for a little bite. To use up our leftover Mashed Potatoes, we have Potato Pancakes. You can go either way on these bad boys - sweet, topped with Apple Sauce and/or Maple Syrup (from our friends in Canada, BTW) or savory, topped with Sour Cream and Chives, as our friends in Belgium like them. If you are feeling really bold, we are offering up a Refried Green Bean & Cheese Taco for all your chlorophyll needs. If none of those really grab you, we will throw the dog a bone by offering up Cinnamon Swirl French Toast today! A yummy, sweet homemade challah bread swirled with cinnamon and sugar instead of braided and baked up in loaf form. It is then dipped in egg and fried in Texas creamery butter to a delicate golden brown. This is some seriously yummy stuff dudes and dudettes. Don't miss it. As an accompaniment, we have a delicious cinnamon-infused fresh maple syrup and fresh-churned cinnamon-sugar butter. Additionally, we have perfectly flat, super-crispy, hickory-smoked bacon to add to this breakfast treat. The Juice Bar is open with all the standard juices - Orange, Apple, Grapefruit, and Tomato. Today's funky one is the Cranberry Granita Spritzer! Try "The Suicide" - all of them, in one glass - we dare you! It doesn't get much better than this! Start your day off the right way; munch out and go back to sleep. Of course, The Never Ending Urn of Coffee is full and ready to help you wash it all down. Come on down and start your day right Texas. You know you want to!®

Our friends over in The Magical Congress of United Vinceland have a new Special Breakfast Beverage of the Day for us! Vincent has made yet another special request for today, Sparkling Blackcurrant Raspberry Mocktail! If you thought Big Red was red, then you ain't seen nothing yet! This virgin cocktail is a sparkling treat is that starts with black currant and lime essence in which raspberries are muddled. The whole shebang is mixed with sparkling water and a wedge of lime to give you a delightful concoction that will tickle your taste buds as well as your nose. Mmmm! Thank you, Vincent!

Usually, it is about meeting your fellow Texans and talking about the latest and most interesting stuff in NationStates at the moment. But then again, sometimes NationStates does not even come up. It is wide-open chatting with peeps from around The World both IRL and NS. It is Texans, EuroTexans, WannabeTexans, ex-Texans, and plenty of Friends of Texans. We have it all and all are welcome. 42 minutes ago: The The Empire of Verner Von Richthofen arrived from An Experimental Region.

As a native Texan, these two Nations of mine belongs in Texas since I wish to get my cards inscribed to indicate that I hail from Texas.

Therefore, my experiment which I was conducting in An Experimental Region has failed since I am no longer in that Region. The experiment’s objective was to discover how many days a Nation must reside in a Region before NSHistory will indicate that particular Nation originated from said Region.

On the plus side, my Experimental Region could be considered a partial success because I was able to see for myself what administrative powers someone who has more than the Border Control and Polling abilities which I have, would have.

Nyah ha ha ha! :)

World AIDS Day

First recognized in 1988, World AIDS Day falls on December 1 each year. World AIDS Day is dedicated to spreading awareness of the AIDS pandemic spread by the spread of HIV infection, and to mourning those who have died of the disease. An estimated 40 million people worldwide have died of AIDS since 1981, and an estimated 37 million are living with HIV, making it one of the most important global public health issues in recorded history. Despite recent improvements in treatment, the AIDS epidemic still claims an estimated two million lives each year, of which more than 250,000 are children.

How to Observe World AIDS Day

Wear a red ribbon
Wearing a red ribbon in your lapel is the most broadly recognized way of showing your support on World AIDS Day. Red symbolizes blood, and the pain caused by the disease, anger about global inaction to fight the epidemic, a warning to take the disease seriously, and a symbol of love, passion, and tolerance towards those affected by the disease. Check online to find a ribbon supplier that supports a charitable cause.

Donate to an AIDS charity
There are a host of national and international nonprofits devoted to fighting the disease and problems associated with its spread. Check online and consider whether you’d like to support an organization in the United States, where deaths have been declining since the mid 1990s but infection continues to affect thousands of people each year, or perhaps an organization focused on infection in Sub-Saharan Africa, where Adult HIV Prevalence has reached 1 in 20 people and 1.2 million people die of HIV/AIDS each year.

Attend a candlelight vigil
Most major cities in the US host candlelight vigils on World AIDS Day as a way of visually commemorating those lost to the disease and vowing to fight it in the future. Check online to find a vigil near you and head along to show your support. Don’t forget to share your experience on social media to ensure that the idea is brought to the front of mind for your friends, and to demonstrate your support.

Why World AIDS Day is Important

AIDS impacts everyone
In its early years, some criticized World AIDS Day for focusing on children and young people, but organizers aimed to alleviate some of the stigma surrounding the disease as primarily affecting gay men, boosting recognition of it as a family disease. HIV/AIDS is the leading cause of death among women of reproductive age, globally, and of 1.8 million new HIV infections in 2016, 43 percent were among women.

Getting to zero
Since 2012, the multi-year theme for World AIDS Day has been achieving zero new HIV infections, zero deaths from AIDS-related illnesses, and zero discrimination. In 2016, new infections among young women aged 15 to 24 were 44% higher than they were among men in the same age group, which suggests the high profile AIDS-related deaths of male celebrities such as Freddie Mercury, Robert Mapplethorpe and Rock Hudson have continued to overshadow realities of new infection rates amongst women in the public imagination. World AIDS Day seeks to challenge those perceptions and protect everyone.

Equalizing access to treatment
Research shows that stigma associated with sex work and LGBT populations, internationally, is a growing factor in unequal access to effective treatment. International AIDS funding began to fall for the first time in 2015, but still, less than half of those suffering with HIV/AIDS have access to anti-retroviral treatment across the world. It’s never been more important to draw attention the inequalities in treatment, in order to stop its spread once and for all.

Also, that should have given you the banner for having founded a region (if you didn't already have it anyway), which you keep even once the region has CTEd...

Indeed Buddy. Thank you for the information. I just checked my banners and I have the banner for founding a Region which is aptly named "Brave New World". Nyah ha ha ha! :)

December 1, 2019

Greetings Citizens of Texas!

It is our great pleasure to announce that the nomination process is over for the Second Trimester 2019 Texas Elections. The following is the slate for the new Government of Texas. This week will be a time for candidates to campaign, debate and make speeches on the offsite forum. Next Sunday we will begin the elections. Join all the fun on the offsite forum at:

https://www.tapatalk.com/groups/texas1/2019-3rd-trimester-elections-f276/

Election Notes are in that forum as well.

We actually have a little bit of excitement in Texas Elections in one of the Texas Cabinet races this Trimester! WooHootie! Texas Secretary of State Trecdom2's position is being contested by former Texas Secretary of WA Affairs, Gig Em Aggies. This will be the race to watch as all the other Cabinet races are incumbents versus No Confidence. The Texas Representative Council race will be a snoozer too as it is only incumbents running as well. You know what, as Governor of Texas, that is fine by us. If the current Cabinet was not doing their job, then we would have nominated some peeps we thought could do it better to run against them. We could not think of a department where we would even consider doing that but welcome seeing competition. As we always say, candidates need to remember, there is RL work involved in these positions versus RP work, of which there is some of that too. These are not cushy jobs; just ask any of them. As usual, all races will have the ever-pesky and dreaded No Confidence to run against.

In these 59th Texas Elections, as in every election, a well-made speech or no-speech may decide the final 5. That is a serious tip for would-be TRC members. * wink * Texas, please join us in saluting all our nominees for Texas Government!

Congratulations to all the Candidates!

Cyber Monday

What is Cyber Monday
Cyber Monday is celebrated the Monday after Thanksgiving weekend. Established in 2005, Cyber Monday is the Internet’s answer to brick-and-mortar holiday shopping. Unlike Black Friday, Cyber Monday gives you the chance to shop those amazing Black Friday deals from the comfort of your couch or office.

History of Cyber Monday
Cyber Monday was invented in 2005 by Ellen Davis, the president of the National Retail Foundation. Data had shown that the Monday after Thanksgiving was experiencing higher than usual traffic for retail shopping while individuals were at work. Analysts were led to believe that’s because individuals had spent the weekend window shopping among the madness of Black Friday and, rather than use the typically slower residential internet speeds, waited until Monday when they were bored at work to buy what they liked over the weekend.

Thus, Cyber Monday was created as a way for brands to leverage two things: Workplace boredom and the convenience of shopping online versus in store during the Wild West of Black Friday.

Since then, Cyber Monday has steadily grown as one of the major shopping days of the year. With the likes of Amazon and increasingly affordable high-speed internet, shopping online has become more woven into the fabrics of American lives. Nearly everything can be bought and sold with about one click or two.

Additionally, as the holiday grew, so too did the day. Now, Cyber Monday sales may start the Monday before Cyber Monday (making it Cyber Week?). The nomenclature is still unknown. But what we do know is that Cyber Monday is much bigger now than just an ahead of its time insight in 2005.

Cyber Monday timeline

2018
Record Highs

In 2018, nearly $8 billion was spent on Cyber Monday, up almost twenty percent from the year before and a record high for the holiday. Not too shabby for a thirteen-year-old holiday.

2005
A Name is Given

Now that it has a name, it's a thing. Before that, it was just a trend. But in 2005 the world was given the term Cyber Monday and thus Cyber Monday became a thing the world would know.

2003
White Wednesday

White Wednesday crawled so Cyber Monday could walk. 1800Flowers.com tried to leverage the holiday shopping season by taking the Wednesday before Thanksgiving as a deal day. But, unfortunately, the holiday didn't catch as too many individuals were stuck in line at the airport before smartphones kept us entertained.

Cyber Monday FAQs

Is Amazon going to have Cyber Monday deals?
That’s likely a safe bet. Inevitably, Amazon will have Cyber Monday deals.

Are Black Friday deals better than Cyber Monday?
That varies based on the retailer and the item. Some products may have better deals online than in store, and vice versa.

What store has the best Cyber Monday deals?
Amazon typically has rather popular deals, as well as other bigger retailers such as Best Buy.

How long is Cyber Monday?
Cyber Monday lasts anywhere from 24 hours to seven days.

Cyber Monday Activities
Instead of a lunch break, take a shop break

The downside of Cyber Monday is that, well, it's on a Monday. Most of us have to work. But who needs a lunch break? On Cyber Monday, take a shop break! Eating can wait.

Indulge your inner Internet shopaholic
It's okay to let your freak flag fly once a year. If you secretly love Internet shopping but willfully don't let yourself indulge, Cyber Monday is the one day you can browse the Internet all day and feel not a shred of guilt.

Crowdsource website recommendations
Since you're browsing the Internet on Cyber Monday, you're probably already on Facebook. Expand your shopping horizons by asking your Facebook friends to share their favorite e-commerce websites. Then prepare to be led down a pleasurable rabbit hole of Internet shopping paradise.

Why We Love Cyber Monday

It gives us an excuse to be anti-social
After the madness of Thanksgiving and Black Friday, most of us just want some alone time. Cyber Monday gives us the respite we need. The whole universe of Internet shopping is at our fingertips, and we don't have to interact with a single human being to buy what we want!

We don't have to get dressed
When it comes to Internet shopping, it's all about you. Nobody to please, nowhere to go—shoes and even clothes are optional. If you want to snuggle up on the couch in nothing but your boxers, nobody can stop you.

Cyber Monday has deals you won't find on Black Friday
Cyber Monday deals are typically offered by smaller retailers and focus more heavily on fashion than technology. On average, there are 45% more clothing deals and 50% more shoe deals on Cyber Monday than on Black Friday.

Your reaction matters more than what happens to you

Once upon a time a daughter complained to her father that her life was miserable and that she didn’t know how she was going to make it. She was tired of fighting and struggling all the time. It seemed just as one problem was solved, another one soon followed.

Her father, a chef, took her to the kitchen. He filled three pots with water and placed each on a high fire. Once the three pots began to boil, he placed potatoes in one pot, eggs in the second pot, and ground coffee beans in the third pot.

He then let them sit and boil, without saying a word to his daughter. The daughter, moaned and impatiently waited, wondering what he was doing.

After twenty minutes he turned off the burners. He took the potatoes out of the pot and placed them in a bowl. He pulled the boiled eggs out and placed them in a bowl.

He then ladled the coffee out and placed it in a cup. Turning to her he asked. ‘Daughter, what do you see?’

‘Potatoes, eggs, and coffee,’ she hastily replied.

‘Look closer,’ he said, ‘and touch the potatoes.’ She did and noted that they were soft. He then asked her to take an egg and break it. After pulling off the shell, she observed the hard-boiled egg. Finally, he asked her to sip the coffee. Its rich aroma brought a smile to her face.

‘Father, what does this mean?’ she asked.

He then explained that the potatoes, the eggs and coffee beans had each faced the same adversity– the boiling water.

However, each one reacted differently.

The potato went in strong, hard, and unrelenting, but in boiling water, it became soft and weak.

The egg was fragile, with the thin outer shell protecting its liquid interior until it was put in the boiling water. Then the inside of the egg became hard.

However, the ground coffee beans were unique. After they were exposed to the boiling water, they changed the water and created something new.

‘Which are you,’ he asked his daughter. ‘When adversity knocks on your door, how do you respond? Are you a potato, an egg, or a coffee bean?’

I think the updates take a bit to kick in. I made some changes early this afternoon and they still haven't shown up. We'll see how the card looks tomorrow.

National Day of Giving

National Day of Giving encourages giving back. It takes place the Tuesday after Thanksgiving.

After we’ve spent the weekend shopping and looking for the best deals possible, this day reminds us to give to those less fortunate. Whether we look to our favorite causes or charities, it’s a great reminder to lift others up during a generous time of year. On the Tuesday after Thanksgiving charities, families, businesses, community centers, and students around the world will come together for one common purpose: to celebrate generosity and to give.

HOW TO OBSERVE #GivingTuesday
Quite simply, take advantage of all the holiday deals to add to your charitable giving. Combined with your family, friends, local and national organizations and through the power of social media, Day of Giving can become a tradition worth passing on.

There are several ways to give.

Set up a collection for non-perishable food at work. Deliver the collection to a local food pantry.
Donate gift cards to a shelter.
Collect new toys and donate them to children spending the holidays in the hospital.
Make blankets for those receiving cancer treatment.
Share your giving ideas and use #GivingTuesday to post on social media.

NATIONAL DAY OF GIVING HISTORY
In 2012, 92nd Street Y in New York City created Day of Giving to bring focus to the charitable season in the wake of the commercialized Black Friday and Cyber Monday. More commonly referred to as #GivingTuesday, National Day of Giving harnesses the power of social media to give back around the world and throughout the year.

Be kind to others even if it hurts you

“In the days when an ice cream sundae cost much less, a 10 year old boy entered a hotel coffee shop and sat at a table. A waitress put a glass of water in front of him.

‘How much is an ice cream sundae?’

’50 cents,’ replied the waitress.

The little boy pulled his hand out of his pocket and studied a number of coins in it.

‘How much is a dish of plain ice cream?’ he inquired. Some people were now waiting for a table and the waitress was a bit impatient.

’35 cents,’ she said brusquely.

The little boy again counted the coins. ‘I’ll have the plain ice cream,’ he said.

The waitress brought the ice cream, put the bill on the table and walked away. The boy finished the ice cream, paid the cashier and departed.

When the waitress came back, she began wiping down the table and then swallowed hard at what she saw.

There, placed neatly beside the empty dish, were 15 cents – her tip.”
