Yesterday morning, I slipped and fell down in the bathroom, gave myself a very bad concussion and knocked myself out cold. I had to be taken to the hospital but thankfully I have just been discharged from hospital. I am much better now. My apologies for the lack of daily posts two days in a row.

Why did you do that? There are plenty of people in the world ready and willing to knock you out with little or no provocation. No point in doing it to yourself.

National Golf Lovers Day

Exhilarating and dispiriting, thrilling and embarrassing, joyous and depressing — no activity on Earth encompasses the full emotional spectrum like golf — and that’s why we love it! This October 4, celebrate National Golf Lovers Day by recognizing one of the world’s most popular sports.

Hit the links and play a round as you enjoy a few competitive and friendly laughs with your fellow sufferers. While golf can drive even the greatest players completely bonkers, hitting just one good shot means you can’t wait to tee it up again. In other words, “just grip it and rip it.”

National Golf Lovers Day – History

1894
The USGA is born

Delegates from the Newport Country Club, Saint Andrew’s Golf Club, Yonkers, New York, The Country Club, Chicago Golf Club and Shinnecock Hills Golf Club meet in New York City to form the United States Golf Association (USGA).

1889
Golf embraces “the bird”

The term “birdie” is coined accidentally by golfer, Ab Smith, when he hits a “bird of a shot” at a tourney in Atlantic City.

October 17, 1860
The first-ever pro golf tournament is held

The world’s oldest golf tournament is The Open Championship, which was first played at Prestwick Golf Club in Ayrshire, Scotland.

1457
Golf tees off

The modern version of golf comes about in Scotland as King James II officially recognizes the game.

National Golf Lovers Day Activities
Experience a new course

Playing in a different environment can help improve your golf game, so accept an invitation from a friend to play at a private country club, or to check out a new public course.

Take a golf lesson
Learn to play or improve your game by letting a pro coach you. Almost all golfers will admit to needing help with their swing, and lessons can help you improve dramatically. Remember, as the legendary Jack Nicklaus said, “Don’t be too proud to take lessons. I’m not.”

Plan a trip to a major tournament
Check the PGA schedule and select the best time and place to go to your first big golfing event. Whether you're enjoying the coastal beauty of 17-Mile Drive at Pebble Beach, admiring the spring azaleas at Augusta, or honoring golf’s roots at The Open in Scotland, golf gives you back your swing!

5 Facts To Impress Your Golfing Foursome
The über rare shot

The average golfer has a 12,500-to-1 chance of making a hole-in-one.

The wet 'n wild 17th at Sawgrass
Over 100,000 golf balls are hit into the water at the famous 17th “island hole” at Stadium course at Sawgrass each year.

Caddies are French
The French word “cadet” means “youngest child” and is where the word “caddy” comes from.

You’re not alone
Only 20 percent of golfers have a handicap below 18, and a golfer with a handicap of 18 or higher is called a “bogey golfer."

Space golf? Yep!
Apollo 14 astronaut Alan Shepard famously took a golf ball along with him to the moon — where a swing of his 6-iron made him the first person to play golf in space.

Why We Love National Golf Lovers Day

It’s a great hobby
Golf is a rare hobby that combines exercise, the great outdoors, dedicated time with others, skill and friendly competition. Anyone can pick up a club and hit the course — which makes golf a great way to spend some time outdoors and away from computer screens, TVs, and the daily grind.

It’s zen
You’ve heard of a runner’s high? Golfers have their own version and it takes place on an uncrowded golf course, walking quietly around the green landscape, proceeding at a leisurely pace as you soak it all in.

It’s for everyone
The fact that men, women and children can play golf equitably on the same golf course is one of the game’s greatest benefits. It's the perfect blend of social event and exercise. Plus, there’s something about golf’s humbling nature that brings everyone together. No one is immune from embarrassment, and that is liberating to the family dynamic.

National Manufacturing Day

National Manufacturing Day on the first Friday in October celebrates those who proudly stand behind our goods and services in America. In the United States, we continue to develop products and unlock new technologies growing our economy. Manufacturing businesses create jobs through entrepreneurship, and their competitiveness revitalizes American manufacturing.

Throughout the observance, more than 1,600 American manufacturers will open their doors and participate. They will take up the important work of inspiring our young people to pursue careers in manufacturing and engineering. Today’s science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) graduates will power the next chapter of American production and innovation. Harnessing their potential is an economic imperative.

HOW TO OBSERVE #NationalManufacturingDay
Find local manufacturing events, explore innovative ideas and collaborate on new technologies. Encourage students to attend job fairs or ask your employer to participate. You may just help inspire the next generation to fill your shoes when we need it most. Since many skilled laborers will be retiring, there will be more jobs than workers. Spread the word and watch for new opportunities opening up everywhere in the manufacturing field.

NATIONAL MANUFACTURING DAY HISTORY
Governor Chris Cristie of New Jersey proclaimed the first official Manufacturing Day in 2012. President Barack Obama signed the Presidential Proclamation in 2014.

World Smile Day

Let’s see those pearly whites — it’s World Smile Day! It’s celebrated on the first Friday of October every year. World Smile Day first began with Harvey Ball, a commercial artist from Massachusetts, who designed the smiley face in 1963. Ball’s ultimate goal was to inspire the world to dedicate one day each year to smiling and performing kind acts in the community.

The day was first celebrated in 1999 and we’ve been grinning on this special Friday every year since. Ball’s smiley face has become one of the most recognizable symbols of goodwill and good cheer and his hope was for us to portray those qualities, too. No matter the destruction, racism, and sadness going on in the world, today is a day to share some compassion to help us stress a little less and smile a little more!

World Smile Day Activities

Wear your smile
Smiling is a simple way to spread happiness and cheer throughout the day. As we established before, smiles are contagious and by smiling at others, we can have a palpably positive impact on the world. Let your ear-to-ear grins start a happi-demic!

Send a positive note or card to a friend
Sometimes the best way to make someone smile is to send them a thoughtful card or give them a motivational note. Let that be the reason someone smiles today.

Do a good deed
Part of the celebration for today is doing something that elicits smiles through our actions. One of the most powerful ways to spread a smile is by doing something nice for others. Consider volunteering your time at a hospital or your local soup kitchen, help a friend out with that big favor, or finally schedule some family time. Actions speak louder (and happier) than words.

Why We Love World Smile Day

It makes us happy (even when we're not)
The simple act of smiling sends a message to your brain that you're happy, which signals the brain to pump out tons of feel-good endorphins. In a sense, by smiling, we initiate a positive feedback loop in our brains that reinforces our joy. Smile, it's like free therapy!

It spreads cheer
Research shows that smiling is, in fact, contagious. Seeing a friend smile can make you activate the muscles in your face to mimic their same expression, even when you're not aware of it. When you smile, the world smiles back.

It can help you land a job
Job interviews are heavily based on first impressions— you can't just wear a suit or dress, you have to wear a smile too! Smiling tells other people that you are friendly, confident and conscientious. Sounds like traits that most companies look for in potential employees, right?

World Teachers’ Day

Almost everybody has a favorite teacher, someone who went above and beyond to encourage you because they could see your potential. On October 5, take time to celebrate World Teachers’ Day — a global event launched by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in 1994.

Just as Matilda had Ms. Honey, Harry had Dumbledore, and Cady had Ms. Norbury, maybe you’re a teacher working hard to help young people learn and grow. Considering that teachers mold future generations, taking one day every year to say “thank you” is the least we can do. No matter where you are in the world today, remember that teachers matter!

World Teachers’ Day History

This holiday marks the anniversary of the adoption of the 1966 UNESCO Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers. It sets standards regarding the rights and responsibilities of teachers for their initial preparation, further education, recruitment, employment, and learning conditions.

UNESCO’s 2019 message: “With the theme: ‘Young Teachers: The Future of the Profession,’ we recognize the critical importance of reaffirming the value of the teaching mission. We call upon governments to make teaching a profession of first choice for young people. Above all, we celebrate the work of dedicated teachers around the world who continue to strive every day to ensure that ‘inclusive and equitable quality education’ and the promotion of ‘lifelong learning opportunities for all’ become a reality in every corner of the globe.”

The official event will take place at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris on October 7 .

When is World Teachers' Day 2019?

World Teachers' Day falls on October 5, 2019.

World Teachers' Day Stats

In India, the share of female teachers declines with the remoteness of schools, from 60% when the school is located at the local government seat to 30% when it is 30 km away.

More teachers are needed in displacement settings. If all refugees enrolled, Turkey would need 80,000 additional teachers, Germany would need 42,000 teachers and educators, and Uganda would need 7,000 additional primary teachers. Yet refugee teachers are often excluded from national training programs because of professional regulations on right to work.

Nearly 94% of teachers in pre-primary education, but only about half of those in upper secondary education, are female.

The proportion of women among primary school teachers in low-income countries (41%) is half that in high-income countries (82%).

In low-income countries, only 23% of secondary school teachers are women.

At the tertiary level, only 19% of teachers are women in low-income countries and about 46% or less in the other income groups.

How to Observe World Teachers' Day

Surprise your teacher with a gift
Kids can show their appreciation by giving their teacher a heartfelt “thank you” card, surprising them with homemade crafts or drawings, or by writing a poem of admiration.

Make teachers feel special
Parents love teachers, too! Show just how much on World Teachers' Day. Collaborate with your local PTA to set up a raffle with gift cards, coffee mugs and other prizes. Provide coffee and donuts or ask parents to set up a potluck breakfast for teachers before the school day begins.

Give teachers the royal treatment
Being a teacher can be stressful, exhausting and frustrating. On World Teachers' Day, school administrations should pamper their teachers. Having lunch catered or surprising teachers with a 10-minute massage are great ways to let teachers know that their hard work doesn’t go unnoticed. If October 5 falls on a weekend, celebrate on the Friday before or the Monday after.

5 Things To Learn About Teachers

Confucius was the First Teacher
Historically, Confucius is considered to be the first private teacher in history.

Education for all
According to UNESCO, the world needs 69 million teachers in order to achieve the goal of providing universal primary and secondary education by 2030.

The number of African educators are dwindling on the continent
Sub-Saharan Africa is the area facing the greatest deficit of teachers.

Teaching standards are plummeting
According to UNESCO, less than 75% of teachers in one-third of the world’s countries only meet the minimum teacher training standards.

Learning proficiency is down
6 out of 10 children worldwide—a total of 617 million—do not meet the minimum requirements for competency in mathematics and reading.

Why World Teachers' Day is Important

It honors the teaching profession
Waking up at the crack of dawn, having the patience of a saint and being a positive influence is stressful work — let’s face it, Cady would still be a mean girl if it wasn’t for Ms. Norbury. On World Teachers' Day, gifts, praise and parties are great ways to show you care.

It highlights current Issues affecting teachers
Sure, having summers off is a highly-coveted perk, but there are still many complex issues affecting teachers within educational systems throughout the world. These include maintaining academic freedoms, creating autonomy for educational institutions and developing and maintaining professional teaching standards in higher education. Fortunately, World Teachers' Day enables discussion in faculty meetings, webinars, seminars and conferences.

It applauds progress but challenges stagnation
Although the educational system and the role teachers play in it have come a long way, there is still a long way to go. Because of this, the United Nations created the 2030 Sustainable Development Goal for Education. World Teachers' Day is an annual reminder of this goal and the need to do more to encourage teachers to remain in education.

National Be Nice Day

Every year on October 5, people come together to celebrate National Be Nice Day. It’s a no-brainer that we should be nice each and every day, but unfortunately, in this complicated world, that’s a tough goal to achieve on a daily basis.

Luckily, there’s one special day where we can fully concentrate on kindness towards others, something which richochets back to us as a personal benefit. Be it big or small, any act of kindness is something to celebrate. National Be Nice Day encourages us to make someone else’s life just a little bit happier. Commit to walking in the light of positivity all day long.

Hug a friend
We don't think you need an excuse to give a friend a hug, but National Be Nice Day is certainly the appropriate time to show someone close to you just how much you care. So, get out there and find a friend that needs a warm embrace!

Spread the word
There's probably a good chance that you'll use some form of social media throughout the day on October 5. Why not give National Be Nice Day a shoutout? Bringing awareness to this special day will help raise consciousness about staying positive and the day opens up the "kindness taps" so that good feeling flows out into the world.

Invite friends over for a dinner party
If you're looking for a way to be nice to your friends, offer to make them a meal. It's great to get together with close friends, and they will certainly appreciate your time and effort just to make them happy!

Top 5 Reasons To Smile At A Stranger
Being nice feels good

Research has found that being nice to others releases the feel-good hormone, serotonin.

It's heart-healthy
Spreading cheer releases the hormone, oxytocin, which is known to help lower blood pressure.

Say goodbye to stress
Showing kindness to others helps to build relationships, which in turn helps lower your stress.

Hey, good lookin'
Research has found that nicer people are often perceived as more attractive.

Less sick days
Being nice to others helps to lower inflammation, which in turn helps to decrease your chances of contracting some diseases.

Why We Love National Be Nice Day

It encourages random acts of kindness

Have you ever waited in line at a coffee shop just to find out that the stranger in front of you prepaid for your drink? Or maybe you've seen someone buy another person's groceries. On National Be Nice Day, make it a point to do a random act of kindness — there's a good chance that your good deed will be paid forward.

It's a great reminder that there is good in the world
It often feels like we're constantly bombarded with bad/sad news on the television and internet. National Be Nice Day is a great reminder that there are tons of good things going on all over the world — even if we don't always get to see them.

It makes us feel good
Being nice to people feels good, plain and simple. By making somebody's day just a little bit brighter, we guarantee that at the end of the day, you'll feel great about yourself!

National Do Something Nice Day

Make your friends and family smile this October 5 on National Do Something Nice Day. This holiday encourages us to perform acts of kindness for strangers or loved ones — or both! It’s easy to become so caught up in our own stresses and struggles that we forget to show kindness to others. This holiday is a great reminder that doing good deeds makes the world better — and might even help you better manage your own troubles in the process. So celebrate with us!

National Do Something Nice Day Activities
Volunteer

Get involved in a local organization in your community. If you’re having trouble deciding how or where to volunteer, consider what your strongest skills are and how you can use them to help others. If you’re great at construction, lend a hand to Habitat For Humanity. If you’re a web developer, offer your coding skills to a charitable organization that needs a website revamp or teach local kids some programming basics. In most communities, there are local soup kitchens or homeless shelters that can always use the help of kind, compassionate people.

Assist a stranger
Extend a small gesture of kindness to let a stranger know you care. Pay the bill of the person behind you in line at the coffee shop. If you see someone crying alone in public, offer them a tissue or — if the situation calls for it — some other kind of assistance. If someone thanks you for your good deed, ask them to pay it forward by helping someone else who needs it when the time is right. No matter what, keep spreading goodwill!

Call someone just to tell them you care
Call someone you care about out of the blue, just to let them know how much they mean to you. It just might make their day! If you know someone who is going through a hard time in life, gently check in with them and let them know they're on your mind. If you can swing it, send them a bouquet or drop off a homemade meal. Your personalized attention can make a world of difference.

Why We Love National Do Something Nice Day

It can brighten strangers’ days
A random act of kindness can make a much stronger impact than you might think. Your choice to hold a door open for a stranger or return a missing wallet may be the one positive thing to happen to the recipient that day. For all we know, that person may have been feeling lonelier than ever, or losing faith in the goodness of the world. A small positive act on your part may change that person’s worldview and that’s pretty powerful!

Helping others makes you feel happy
Research has repeatedly found that helping others helps you, too. Giving back to your community or doing a good deed lights up your brain’s pleasure center and can prompt a rush of feel-good chemicals. Scientists aren’t sure why kindness feels so good, but it’s been theorized that the need to help others is something prehistoric humans developed to ensure the survival of their social group. Helping others is part of the very essence of who we are!

It reminds us how much good we can do
Doing a small good deed is a great way to remind ourselves that we can make a difference. It’s easy to feel helpless in the face of the world’s many troubles, but every single one of us can make at least a small impact on someone else’s life. That’s an incredible feeling.

National Kiss a Wrestler Day

They’re big and strong, straining under their rippling muscles. But for all that power, wrestlers need love, too! This October 5, celebrate National Kiss a Wrestler Day and show your respect for one of the world’s oldest and toughest athletic endeavors. Mythology suggests the gods themselves created wrestling. It demands all the elements an athlete strives for — speed, strength, endurance, improvisation, and the mental fortitude to push through adversity.

Although Kiss a Wrestler Day seems to be an internet-inspired holiday, it may be connected to the rock band, Kiss, and its promotional effort to link up with the World Championship of Wrestling (WCW) back in 2000. The idea was to have a wrestler known as The Demon, appear in makeup as one of the Kiss characters. Suffice it to say, the deal fell through. But this day remains as a way to honor wrestlers, past and present.

Take on the challenge and try a “wrestler’s diet” for a little while. Enjoy lean meats and vegetables, avoid foods with high sodium and saturated fats and watch as your energy and strength soar!

Learn about other cultures
Whether in the form of Sombo (Russia), Judo (Japan), or Freestyle (USA and Great Britain), the different styles of wrestling embrace cultural aspects of their places of origin. Learn about the various backgrounds of each — and gain a new level of respect for the sport and the countries where each style was founded.

Raking leaves again this fall? Stop right now
https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2019/10/05/raking-leaves-fall-stop-now-keep-leaves-lawn-mulch-them/3853468002/

Too Long; Did not read? Here’s the important part:

It's fall and that means leaves are littering lawns around the country.
Time to take out the rake and bag up them up, right? Wrong.
Leaves and yard waste take up space in landfills. Leaving your leaves could make your lawn healthier – and save you money. You do not need to spend money on expensive fertilizers to keep your grass healthy. Don't rake grass clippings, either. That's because grass clippings hold valuable nutrients that can fertilize your lawn, experts say.

The environment around you depends on your leaves. Over winter months, a lot of butterflies and moths as pupa or caterpillar are in the leaf litter, and when you rake it up you are removing the whole population of butterflies you would otherwise see in your yard

But you still might need to do some raking. If you do remove your leaves, the best thing to do is cut them up and drop them in a plant or flower bed or another part of your lawn that doesn't get leaf cover. That will provide a natural fertilizer and mulch for those parts of your yard. If you don't have a plant or flower bed or have too many leaves, start a compost bin.

"This is about taking baby steps for most people and getting to a maintenance on your yard and garden that is a little bit more environmentally friendly and wildlife friendly," David Mizejewski, a naturalist at the National Wildlife Federation said.

World Cerebral Palsy Day

Cerebral Palsy (CP) is an unwelcome global phenomenon. World Cerebral Palsy Day, which occurs annually on October 6, reminds us that there over 17 million people impacted by this disorder. CP is one of the most common physical disabilities affecting the most vulnerable among us — children. Additionally, CP occurs over the span of a child’s entire lifetime with no cure. This year, become a catalyst for change to help improve the lives of those with cerebral palsy.

World Cerebral Palsy Day - History
2002

The CDC conducted major U.S. CP study
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention undertook the first U.S. cross-country study on the prevalence and impact of cerebral palsy.

1949
Major mental health agency created

The National Institute for Mental Health was funded and organized to assist those with mental disabilities.

1948
A key cerebral palsy organization founded

The innovative United Cerebral Palsy Association was formed to help people with cerebral palsy receive better diagnosis, treatment and funding.

1932
First folding wheelchair invented

Harry Jennings, an engineer, built the very first modern folding wheelchair to improve the lives of those with motor impairments.

1810
Dr. William John Little born

He was the first person to study cerebral palsy.

How to Observe World Cerebral Palsy Day

Tell your story
Both children and adults with cerebral palsy deserve to be heard. If you have the disorder — or you're a parent, caregiver, or friend of someone with CP — blog about your experience. Post pictures throughout social media letting everyone know about World Cerebral Palsy Day and why it is so important. People with CP need to burst out of the shadows and shout their confidence.

Attend a discussion on CP
Although there are over 350 million people who are connected in some way to cerebral palsy, there are lingering misconceptions about the disorder. There are cultures that believe CP is contagious. But wherever there is the darkness of ignorance, there must be a way to shine the light of education. By attending an event on cerebral palsy, you can find out what different countries are doing to create awareness and you may even come up with a few ideas for your own neighborhood.

Throw the kids a party
Sadly, there are many children with cerebral palsy who may experience feelings of isolation from not living in a positive, accessible environment. If you have a child or know a child with CP, throw a party or set up a play day because all children need to play. At the party, set up easy games for the younger children and video games for the older kids. Make the environment festive as well as a day they will always remember.

5 Things About Cerebral Palsy That Will Make You Pause For The Cause

It mainly affects children
The numbers are chilling. One in four children with CP are unable to talk; one in three can't walk; one in two have a mental or intellectual disability; and one in four has epilepsy.

It affects infants
One in 500 infants is born with cerebral palsy.

It affects preemies
Almost half of the people with CP were born premature.

Cerebral Palsy stigmatizes
In many societies around the world, people with CP are kept uneducated and hidden away from the rest of the community.

Cerebral Palsy hits hard in the Netherlands
In the Netherlands, a baby is born with cerebral palsy every 22 hours.

Why World Cerebral Palsy Day is Important
Cerebral Palsy is not a disease

In order to correctly examine cerebral palsy, it's important to note what it is not — a disease. In fact, CP is considered a disorder. The effects of CP change from person to person. Those effects include a weakness in one or both hands, epilepsy, intellectual disability, and a total inability to control movement such as walking.

World Cerebral Palsy Day promotes inclusion
One of the big goals of World Cerebral Palsy Day is to promote more inclusive societies for people with CP. One way to accomplish this is to educate the world on the idea that CP is not some isolated disorder. In many societies, people with CP are either pitied and overprotected — or they are regarded with suspicion. Some cultures believe that a mother was cursed for doing something wrong if her child was born with CP. World Cerebral Palsy Day is an opportunity to produce actions that will lead to more open minds and societies.

World Cerebral Palsy Day tackles big issues
Cerebral Palsy is a worldwide disorder affecting millions of people, primarily children. Global organizations are collaborating together to take on the big issues that CP sufferers face. According to World Cerebral Palsy Day organizers, there is an active group of families and organizations in 65 countries working on improved CP diagnosis and treatment, better quality of life, educational opportunities, and charitable contributions to fund continued research.

National Plus Size Appreciation Day

National Plus Size Appreciation Day serves as a great opportunity to remind ourselves that when it comes to beauty, one size doesn’t fit all. The purpose of the October 6 holiday is to celebrate the curves that men and women everywhere rock. So, whether you happen to be plus sized or not, get out and spread the word that having a little more to love can be a truly fantastic thing.

National Plus Size Appreciation Day – History

2017
First National Plus Size Appreciation Day

For the first time ever, October 6 is dedicated as National Plus Size Appreciation Day.

2016
"Sports Illustrated" went plus size

Ashley Graham became the first plus-size model to appear on the "Sports Illustrated" Swimsuit Edition cover.

1980
High end plus-size clothing

Marina Rinaldi, founded by Max Mara, became one of the first high-end clothing lines for plus-size women.

1920s
The launch of Lane Bryant

Lane Bryant began selling clothes marketed towards the "stout woman."

National Plus Size Appreciation Day Activities

Talk about it on social media
Give National Plus Size Appreciation Day a shoutout on your social media accounts. Talking about this day on Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram will help spread the word.

Attend a plus-size fashion show
Since bodies come in all different shapes and sizes, so do our clothes. Keep up with current trends in plus- size fashion by attending a fashion show. It's fun to keep a pulse on the new trends popping up in the fashion industry.

Give a compliment
An overall theme of National Plus Size Appreciation Day is to make sure that every person feels good in his or her own skin. In honor of this day, make it a point to dish out a few extra compliments to family, friends, and even strangers. There's a good chance a simple, sincere compliment will make someone's day.

3 Important Things To Know About Plus-Size Models
Their bodies are healthy

Plus size is far from being synonymous with unhealthy; in fact, many plus-size models are in excellent physical health.

Some curves may be fake
Clothing isn't one size fits all, so many models pad parts of their bodies in order to fill out the clothing they are wearing.

Is size 6 really plus size?
You may be surprised to find out that in the modeling world, plus size is designated to women sizes 6-16.

Why We Love National Plus Size Appreciation Day

National Plus Size Appreciation Day boosts body confidence
We can all be a little insecure about our appearance sometimes. What we love about National Plus Size Appreciation Day, though, is that it's dedicated to making sure that men and women with a little more to love remember that their bodies are truly beautiful.

It helps to normalize the appearance of plus-sized models
For years, fashion ads only featured ultra-slim models. Thankfully, within the past few years, plus-sized models have been making an appearance. National Plus Size Appreciation Day is a great time to remember that these curvaceous models more accurately depict what men and women really look like.

It's something fun to rally behind
Regardless of your body size, everyone can celebrate the message. Let's work to end body shaming, and instead celebrate all of the different shapes and sizes that human bodies come in.

National Coaches Day

On October 6th, National Coaches Day honors the men and women who inspire us to work harder and do our best.

Across the country in every community, a coach organizes teams, plans practices and training, motivates players to strive to be the best they can be. At the same time, coaches pinpoint areas for improvement and supply guidance. Every sport or competition requires a leader. More importantly, a leader who knows the game and how to drive athletes to work together as a team.

Many coaches maintain a schedule for training, conditioning, and preparing athletes not only for competition but for their best health. Injuries sideline athletes and upset team dynamics. Although a coaches final goal is winning, they do so through a wealth of knowledge. Coaches work to build teams that bond well. They develop work ethics and set standards for their athletes that many carry with them throughout their lifetime.

For many athletes, coaches teach them to focus and how to reach a goal – which sometimes is not about winning. Sometimes the achievement is an improvement, playing by the rules or learning respect for others, themselves, or the game.

Coaches represent leadership, mentors, and inspiration. Often, a coach’s words will echo through an athlete’s mind for years to come, motivating them forward and through difficult times. Rarely do these coaches even know the impact they’ve had on an athlete until many decades pass.

Inspirational Coaches
John Madden – Coach of the Oakland Raiders, he led his team for ten seasons and a Super Bowl victory in 1977.

Kathryn Smith – As the first full-time female coach for the NFL, she inspires by sheer achievement. However, her background offers a unique perspective coaches and players both benefit from.

Herb Brooks – The NHL hockey coach who led the United States a win against the dominating Soviet Union in what became known as the Miracle on Ice.

Tony La Russa – With three world Series titles and a long list of wins, the manager for the Athletics and St. Louis Cardinals dominated the AL and NL during his career.

Cheryl Miller – The one-time basketball coach for Cal State LA, she led her team to two NCAA tournaments. She now reports to TNT as a sports broadcaster.

HOW TO OBSERVE #NationalCoachesDay
Celebrate a coach who inspired you. Share a transformational memory with your coach. No matter how many years have passed, contact coaches who impacted your life and thank them.

Organize a celebration for your coach. Bring the team together and let your coach know how much you appreciate all they do. Invite former coaches to be honored at schools and organizations.

Use #NationalCoachesDay to share stories, memories, and events about your favorite coaches.

NATIONAL COACHES DAY HISTORY
In 1972, President Richard Nixon issued proclamation 4157 naming October 6th as National Coaches Day. He encouraged activities and ceremonies honoring coaches for the friends and counselors they become.

National Child Health Day

For parents, one of the primary responsibilities is taking care of their child’s physical well-being, from regular check-ups and immunizations to healthy eating and plenty of exercise to use up all that energy. Setting a good example for kids is key, and we also want to instill good habits that will last even after they leave the nest. So this year, let’s focus on inspiring our kids to come up with their own ways to take healthy responsibility.

National Child Health Day – History

1991
Dance marathon movement begins — to support pediatric hospitals

Miracle Network Dance Marathon is a movement benefitting Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals, a non-profit organization that raises funds for more than 170 pediatric hospitals across North America. College, university, and high school students get to meet patient families treated at local hospitals, participate in the dance marathon, and announce their annual fundraising total.

1960
A new date to celebrate

Originally observed on May 1, National Child Health Day moves to the first Monday in October.

1929
National Child Health Day began

Responding to pleas from both the American Federation of Labor and the General Federation of Women’s Clubs, in 1928, President Calvin Coolidge issued a Child Health Day Proclamation. It was first celebrated on May 1, 1929, and every year since, the current president has proclaimed the day on which it is observed.

How to Observe National Child Health Day

Get cooking, kids!
Find some "kid chef" recipes and make a plan (with approval from your parents) to cook a healthy meal or snack. Even if your mom or dad has to do the parts that involve sharp knives, you’ll all have fun together, and it’s surprisingly satisfying to eat food you’ve planned and prepared yourself. And you just might discover a hidden talent!

Surprise your parents
If you have a yard, there are probably plenty of chores like raking up leaves you can get done this time of year. If you have an apartment balcony instead of a yard, you could get that cleaned up before the winter weather sets in. Regular household jobs, like vacuuming, provide a real workout, while hand-washing dishes slows things down and gives your brain a break.

Try a new activity
Think meditation is only for adults? With just five to ten minutes a day, the same benefits of meditation, including increasing mental alertness, reducing anxiety, and greater physical energy, have been shown to apply to children as young as four. Parents, why not learn a new dance with your kids? Many dance studios have classes your whole family can participate in — a fun way to get moving, enjoy great music, and learn something new!

4 Ways To Turn Healthy Cooking Into Child's Play

Balance screen time with kitchen time
While searching the Internet is a super-efficient way to find recipes, meal plans, food suppliers, and inspiration, it's good to challenge to yourself to give equal time to hands-on meal preparation.

Getting to know the locals
Check out your local farmer’s markets, which can offer not just locally-grown, seasonal produce, meat, and seafood, but also vegetable and herb plants you can use to enhance your recipes.

Tired of Taco Tuesday? Start a new tradition
Wake up your taste buds with updates to menu classics — how about Tortellini Tuesday or Fajita Friday?

Go on, play with your food
Eating would probably not give us much pleasure if it didn’t look good, so even if you’re just warming up a can of soup, try adding a little chopped fresh parsley, cilantro, or another kind of garnish to elevate the experience of eating even the simplest of meals.

Why National Child Health Day is Important

Healthy living is a daily choice
Most of us have a daily routine that’s so regular, we don’t have to consciously think about it — from what we eat for breakfast to brushing our teeth before bed. So on National Child Health Day, let’s make a point of paying attention to the choices we make that affect our health, and think about ways we can introduce healthier foods and activities into our lives.

Gratitude pays off
It’s natural to take good health for granted — until we get sick or injured. (Have you ever tried to dress yourself with a broken arm or leg?) Or maybe you know someone at school who’s in a wheelchair or uses crutches. We can take just one minute each day to notice and be thankful for our good health, including vision, mobility, and the ability to simply breathe. And guess what? The gratitude we feel has also been shown to have health benefits.

It reminds us that it’s all about the balance
Yes, our health is a serious topic, but that doesn’t mean we can’t have fun. If we think of being healthy as enjoyable, rather than something we’re “supposed” to do, we’re more likely to look forward to outdoor activities, planning delicious meals with our families, and fitting in some restorative quiet time as well. (Our parents are right about taking those naps!)

Yom Kippur

What is Yom Kippur?
Otherwise known as the “Day of Atonement,” Yom Kippur is considered the holiest day in Judaism. The holiday lasts approximately 25 hours, and is typically observed with fasting and prayer in alignment with the themes of atonement and repentance. On Yom Kippur, people observing the holiday are asked to fast from food and drink (as well as abstaining from bathing and marital relations). In turn, it is encouraged that people spend the day asking God’s forgiveness for their sins and donating to charity.

When is Yom Kippur 2019?
Yom Kippur concludes the ten-day period in the month of Tishrei (typically occurring between September and October) known as the High Holy Days, or “Days of Awe,” which begins with the Jewish New Year Rosh Hashanah. In 2019 Yom Kippur will begin in the evening of Tuesday, October 8 and end the evening of Wednesday, October 9.

How to Observe Yom Kippur

Attend synagogue
As a period dedicated to looking back on and repenting for one's sins from the previous year, attending synagogue provides the ideal environment to engage in deep prayer.

Donate to charity
Giving of one's time or means doesn't just bring joy to those in need; it feels good to give and it helps us become more compassionate.

Don't work
It's mandated in the book of Leviticus that Yom Kippur is a day of rest. Who doesn't enjoy a day off the clock?

Why Yom Kippur is Important

Encourages intense self-reflection
It's easy to forget to set aside time to focus on personal growth, but Yom Kippur ensures that you take the day to committing to developing a better you.

Brings family and friends closer
In considering how our actions affect those closest to us, those bonds are made tighter in the promise of better treatment.

Helps us disconnect
Whether it's work, smartphones, or shopping, it's easy to let what surrounds us consume our every day. It's important to take a step back and take a break from our indulgences every now and then.

American Touch Tag Day

Tag! You’re it! American Touch Tag Day on October 8th celebrates the traditional childhood game and encourages kids of all ages to get out play! Tag can be spent playing outside at recess, after school and on weekends. It can be celebrated by getting out in the fresh air, running around and tagging someone.

Dating back to ancient Rome, this game has been played worldwide with a variety of names and rules. Typically it involves a player running around, chasing other players, in an attempt to “tag” or touch them. Most forms of this game have no teams, scores, or equipment. Usually, the goal involves being the last player left untagged or being safe.

The classic game is ideal for physical education classes as a way to get kids up and moving. Often, students are divided into teams and given boundaries with safe zones.

HOW TO OBSERVE #AmericanTouchTagDay
On American Touch Tag Day, get outside, run around, have some fun. Tag! You’re it!

AMERICAN TOUCH TAG DAY HISTORY

National Day Calendar® continues researching the origins of this fun holiday.

There are over 1,500 national days. Don’t miss a single one. Celebrate Every Day® with National Day Calendar®!

National Fluffernutter Day

National Fluffernutter Day on October 8th brings about a yummy and extraordinary combination. Some food holidays are stickier than others. And National Fluffernutter Day is a stick-to-your-ribs-chin-fingers-nose kind of day! Celebrate zealously, then take a bath.

In 1917, Archibald Query of Somerville, Massachusetts invented a sweet marshmallow-like spread called Marshmallow Creme. Before that, in 1913during World War I, Emma and Amory Curtis of Melrose, Massachusetts invented Snowflake Marshmallow Creme and published a recipe for a peanut butter and marshmallow creme sandwich, which is the earliest known example of a Fluffernutter.

Query sold his recipe for Marshmallow Creme to Durkee-Mower, Inc. in 1920, who renamed it Marshmallow Fluff. Over 100 years later they continue to sell it under that name today.

It was in 1960 that the term Fluffernutter was created by an advertising agency for Durkee-Mower in an attempt to effectively market the peanut butter and marshmallow sandwich.

Beyond the history of Fluffernutter, let’s explore the culinary side of this remarkable combination of sweet and nutty. By layering all the creamy goodness of marshmallow creme and peanut butter between toasted bread, some kitchen experts take perfection to the limits.

How about when pigs fly? Yes, bacon does compliment a fluffernutter. While the combination seems like a bit of circus, it leads us to another ingredient. Fluffernutter and bananas! Elvis would cry tears of joy. Lastly, replace the white toast for a pretzel bun and some heads might turn.

HOW TO OBSERVE#FluffernutterDay
Do you like original fluffernutters or something with a twist?

National Fluffernutter Day – History

1960
"Fluffernutter" used as a marketing tactic

As a way to market the marshmallow/peanut butter sandwich idea — and appeal to more people — an advertising agency coined the term “Fluffernutter."

1920
Same creme — new name

Archibald Query sold his Marshmallow Creme recipe to Durkee-Mower, Inc. — the company that still owns it today — and renamed it Marshmallow Fluff

1917
The original creme is created

Archibald Query of Somerville, Massachusetts, invented a sweet, marshmallow-like spread that he named Marshmallow Creme.

National Fluffernutter Day Activities

Go nuts with your fluffernutter creations.
Although Fluff with peanut butter is the OG of fluffernutters, there’s no rule saying you can’t get creative — so experiment with new combinations. For a more savory take, try adding bacon. To add a bit of tang, spread on some jam. If you want to create the ultimate sweet treat, try adding bananas, chocolate chips, or Nutella.

Spread the fluffernutter love
While it may be tempting to keep the gooey goodness of a fluffernutter to yourself, remember: there’s plenty of Fluff to go around. So on National Fluffernutter Day, celebrate by spreading the love by making extras for your coworkers and friends. If you have kids, bake fluffernutter-inspired cupcakes or cookies for them to bring to school and share with classmates and teachers.

Share the goodness on social media.
Whatever fluffernutter creations you choose to consume, share your tasty treats on social media. Snap a pic, take a Boomerang, capture the deliciousness on a video — however you choose to post about your National Fluffernutter Day treat, just be sure to use #FluffernutterDay when posting.

5 Reasons We Can't Get Enough Fluff
Fluff has made it to outer space

Former International Space Station commander Sunita Willimas requested to have containers of Fluff on her 322-day journey to space.

Fluff festival
Celebrated every September, the “What the Fluff?” festival takes place in Fluff’s hometown of Somerville, Massachusetts, and draws approximately 10,000 visitors every year.

Only 4 ingredients
Fluff has yet to change its recipe: corn syrup, dried egg whites, sugar and vanilla.

The Northeast luffs Fluff
Half of all Fluff profits (through selling 7 million pounds annually) comes from New England and upstate New York.

Paul Revere’s descendants invented the first Fluff-like product
Paul Revere’s great-great-great grandchildren created Snowflake M/arshmallow creme and started selling “Liberty Sandwiches"— consisting of creme and peanut butter, during World War I.

Why We Love National Fluffernutter Day

We get to eat something delicious
There are a lot of great reasons why celebrating National Fluffernutter Day is so much fun, but one of the main reasons is pretty simple: they’re just so fluffin’ amazing. Marshmallowy goodness with peanut butter spread between two slices of bread — who doesn’t love that? Plus, it’s the perfect treat for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. (Well, on this day anyway.)

Adults get to embrace their inner kid
Of course kids love National Fluffernutter Day, but it's also an opportunity for adults to feel like a kid again. Although people of all ages can eat fluffernutters any day of the year, chances are most adults don’t — so National Fluffenutter Day is the perfect opportunity for them to indulge on a treat they most likely haven’t had in a long time.

It’s an excuse to not cook
Whether or not you love cooking, National Fluffernutter Day is an automatic night off. So relax, because you’ll have all this extra time to do whatever you want — like savor every last bite of a fluffernutter. To save even more time, shop for your fluffernutter ingredients the day before National Fluffernutter Day.
