National Son and Daughter Day

We’ve all asked at one point or another, “if there’s a Mother’s and a Father’s day, why isn’t there a childen’s day?” Now, by popular demand, there’s National Son and Daughter Day every August 11. This holiday reminds us to take a step back from the whirlwind of life to appreciate our sons and daughters for who they are and how much joy (and mayhem) they’ve brought us because no matter how tough parenting can be, we all love our children.

But somewhere between working hard to provide for them and wondering why they don’t call, life happens. National Son and Daughter Day encourages you to celebrate the greatness of all your children and the magic they’ve brought into your life.

National Son and Daughter Day Activities
Take the day off

Depending on your particular workload, you might feel like you work more than you get to spend time with your family. To celebrate National Son and Daughter Day, try using up some of that paid time off or even take a sick day so you can do something fun with the kids. This is a day for quality time.

Make a special treat
It doesn't have to be a sugary snack or a messy project, either. You know what your children love to eat and chances are there's even a favorite food that you can make together at home. Some fun and relatively healthy make-at-home snacks include tacos, peanut butter crackers or veggies and ranch dip. You could even go all-out with your kids and teach them to make a favorite dinner or opt for a treat with less cleanup and let the kids pick a restaurant for a special night out.

Spend time with your children
Whether your children are youngsters at home or adults at large, this holiday is a great reminder to make time in your life to stay connected. Take your children out to a movie, meet up for a stroll through the park or sit down around the dinner table and really listen to what they have to say. Sometimes the best way to say "I love you" is by being available and letting your children take the lead. Whatever your children like to do, you can rock this holiday by showing up with some genuine excitement about sharing their passions with them.

Why We Love National Son and Daughter Day
We just can't help it

Humans are social creatures and we all have some genetic programming that encourages us to bond with others. From their first breaths to their first steps and words, children form deep bonds with us as parents and caretakers just like we connect with our children from the moment they're born. So, for all the crap they put us through, we just can't help loving our kids — it's science!

It balances out other family holidays
There's Mother's Day, Father's Day and even, Grandparent's Day. Isn't it only fair that we have a Son and Daughter Day, too? After your kids go above and beyond on a Mother's Day gift that brought you to tears (or a Father's Day gift that wasn't just another power tie), they deserve a bit of nationally-sanctioned celebration themselves. Beyond the lesson this teaches about fairness and equality, kids can start to see how the yearly cycles of family holidays nurture relationships by giving and receiving appreciation in equal measure.

This holiday is unique and special
There are lots of opportunities to dote on your kids, but National Son and Daughter Day is one-of-a-kind. An individual holiday like a child's birthday is only special for one child and communal holidays like Christmas or summer vacation don't really focus on anybody in particular. But National Son and Daughter Day is not just a day for gifts and toys but a time to let your children know through words and deeds how much you really love them.

NATIONAL SPIRIT OF ’45 Day

National Spirit of ’45 Day honors the can-do attitude of an entire generation affected by the trials and hardships of World War II. Observed every year on the second Sunday in August, communities around the country hold events and memorials. Each one honors those who have inspired us, sacrificed and preserved our nation for future generations.

The day ideally sets out to illustrate the people of the Greatest Generation. Over the years, iconic images have been imprinted on our minds. However, they only tell a part of the story. Still, thousands more remain to be told. Spirit of ’45 Day urges us to explore the history. Listen to the stories. Get involved and help preserve the memories of those who lived it.

Around the world, servicemen and women stepped up to the task in the Pacific, Europe, the Mediterranean or Africa. At home, men and women provided valuable food, parts, and labor. Everyone did their part. The youngest of them managed farm work and took on duties on the homefront. Often, supplies of certain items were low – rubber for tires or leather for shoes for example. And gas, too. Rationing was not uncommon.

The generation innovated. They sacrificed. And roles shifted. While they did, technology advanced, too. As a result, manufacturing faced a new horizon.

Those motived to do their duty often did so a personal cost. While migrating great distances, sometimes the only means of communication was the post office. Journalists filled in the blanks via radio and newspaper. Their words filled the airwaves or emptied bottles of ink onto pages with their stories. And the nation paid attention.

HOW TO OBSERVE #SpiritOf45Day

Even though nearly 45 years has passed, so much can be learned from those who endured World War II. Some of those lessons are still being learned today. The Spirit of ’45 Organizationprovides a place to register and find events for upcoming the upcoming Spirit of ’45 Day. They also share past Spirit of ’45 events to keep the inspiration, honor, and preservation alive.

Visit with one of the Greatest Generation and record an interview.
Dive into history and uncover the untold stories by touring the National World War II Museum in New Orleans.
Learn about people like Betty Wason or the contributions of the USO.
Help create a wall of honor with the Spirit of ’45 organization.

NATIONAL SPIRIT OF ’45 DAY HISTORY

In 1996, a project paired children with seniors to document their memories from World War II. Started by Warren Hegg and the Spirit of ’45 Organization, the project grew. Soon they realized many shared a common story.

In 2009, spokesman Ernest Borgnine and Edith Shain* talked about a day honoring the World War II generation. A year later in 2010, Congress passed a joint resolution in commemoration of the 65th anniversary of the day President Truman announced the end of World War II.

*Edith Shain is one of the women who claims to be the woman kissing the sailor in the iconic Times Square photo.

IMO some gun control is ok, in that I can’t really see why anyone should own a rapid-fire assault rifle. But in Britain where I live, things are way too far in the other direction. There is huge knife crime in London, to the extent that people are calling it the knife-crime capital of Europe, and people can’t defend themselves easily, especially when the police are inadequate as they too often are. Ultimately stopping people from owning handguns etc. doesn’t prevent the criminals from getting guns and other weapons, since they don’t do so through legal channels anyway - it just stops law abiding citizens from defending themselves. Plus target shooting is fun and I wish I didn’t have to be licensed to death to do it. My two cents anyway.

Indeed. RBG has been a disastrous judge, perpetually pushing far-left agendas. I never understood why Hollywood make so many films about her (RBG, On the Basis of Sex etc) when she wasn’t even the first female Supreme Court judge. But of course that was Sandra Day O’Connor, and she was a Reagan appointment, so she doesn’t fit the narrative of trailblazing left-liberal pioneers versus reactionary conservatives.

***** State of The Region Address *****

August 11, 2019

Greetings Citizens of Texas!

It is our great pleasure to announce that the nomination process is over and so are the speeches for the 2019 Second Trimester Texas Elections. As always, this is going to be a little bit of a snoozer Election. While none of the Cabinet-level races are contested, every Cabinet race will be running against the ever-pesky No Confidence. No Confidence represents "None of the Above" lurking, lurking. They can be a fierce competitor. We wish them all luck, well, except for No Confidence.

The Texas Representative Council race is going to be pretty mild too. All 5 incumbents are back to run as well as the 4 Secretaries in case No Confidence gets them! That makes 9 running for the 5 positions open. However, if the Secretaries get a majority of votes and win their Cabinet position, they will get to choose which position they want. We have a race, sort of, peeps!

In Constitutional actions, we got nothing. That is ok. That simply means we have a stable, quality Constitution.

The following is the slate the new Texas Government. This next week will be a time for each Texan, as of July 28, 2019, to vote on the offsite forum. Voting is open to both those who are registered and those who are not, however, if you are not registered, you will have to post an "Add Reply" to the message to register your vote. There are instructions pinned to the top of the forum (Please read them before voting!). The Polls will close Sunday, August 18, 2019, at 11:59 am (High Noon Texas Time). Shortly after that, we will announce the winners of the 2019 Second Trimester Texas Elections!

We encourage Texans to participate in the voting process on the offsite forum:

Britain France and Ireland wrote:IMO some gun control is ok, in that I can’t really see why anyone should own a rapid-fire assault rifle.

The most obvious error in your statement is that assault weapons in private hands are very rare here. To own one requires: A $200 tax stamp from the Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms for each weapon; Some kind of blessing from the head of local law enforcement; and navigation of a complex maze of state and local laws to make sure your new toy is not in violation of some Snowflake's useless attempt to outlaw them. Then one must be vigilant to make sure those same set of lawgivers don't outlaw your gun sometime in the future.

Like most people watching the news, you assume the talking heads know what they are talking about. They do not. An assault weapon has a fire select switch that allows the shooter to choose between single shot and fully automatic fire. Fully automatic means the weapon will fire and continue to fire as long as the trigger is held or it runs dry, whichever comes first. The latest generation of real assault weapons may also have an option that fires in bursts of three which is three shots per trigger pull.

The term assault weapon as it is bandied about by the lying sacks of fertilizer in the media and within the gun control advocate groups is being applied to weapons based on their cosmetic appearances. We are talking AR-15's (which really have no place on a battlefield), the Russian and Chinese SKS rifles (kind of a cheap civilian version of an AK-47), and Heckler & Koch's MR556 and MR762 highly customizable series of rifles. These idiots are are afraid of things that have no actual bearing on the weapon's ability to fire or rate of fire. We are talking about barrel shrouds, pistol grips, folding stocks, etc. If it looks like it came out of a Rambo movie, these professional victims get their panties all up in a wad.

As to why someone would want those types of weapons, I can only speak for myself. I do not hunt, but enjoy shooting. In particular I enjoy combat shooting on "Hogan's Alley" style ranges with both handguns and shotguns. I used to enjoy long range shooting out to a thousand yards, but I am too old, too shaky, and don't see as well as I once did. So I hang out on the 300 yard range with those weapons now.

However, none of these reasons are why the Second Amendment exists. Not to bring up a sore spot with our friends across the pond, but the founding fathers of this nation saw what happens when government disarms the population. As such they ensured the federal, state and local governments within the United States would never have a legal basis to disarm the population as a whole. This was done so the individual citizen would have the means to defend their home, their community, and their nation from all threats, including a domestic government that gets too far out of line.

It also bears pointing out those muzzle loading flintlocks and blunderbusses of the time were their "assault weapons." The founding fathers meant exactly what they wrote.

In my case, where I live the average emergency response time for the sheriff runs around 20-25 minutes. Should I be in a bad situation requiring armed backup, that situation is going to be over in 90 seconds. Should the fates ever frown on me enough to drop me into a mess like that, I would prefer to do my explaining to the police verbally rather than through the findings of the medical examiner. It is with that thought in mind that I choose to be armed to the teeth with the most efficient killing machines I can legally own.

Government control needs to be exercised on the mentally ill, the criminals, and anyone else expressing a desire to hurt others, not law abiding gun owners.

Britain France and Ireland wrote:Ultimately stopping people from owning handguns etc. doesn’t prevent the criminals from getting guns and other weapons, since they don’t do so through legal channels anyway - it just stops law abiding citizens from defending themselves.

Trecdom2 wrote:I don't plan on moving closer to the beltway. Might pop in for some tourist stuff but that's about it.

As a veteran of many a trip to DC, I have one serious piece of advice: Don't drive there. Unless you have a monthly parking gig somewhere, there is literally no place to park. None. Monday through Friday, weekends, it doesn't matter, the place is jammed during the daylight hours. And you will spend hours sitting in stopped traffic. Find the nearest Metro station with a parking lot and go into the city from there.

The Metro is your friend. Get to know it and it will treat you well.

You are going to love the Smithsonian Museums. The air and space museum is amazing. Many people don't know there is a second Air and Space museum in Chantilly, VA next to Dulles Airport. That one is actually attached to the runway system at Dulles and is stocked with an enormous number of aircraft that were actually flown there. It is larger than the Mall facility. Last I heard they were expanding it and I think they got one of the space shuttles.

As cool as all that is, do yourself a favor and allow a full day (or more) to wonder the Smithsonian American history museum. You may find that you cannot get enough of that. Everytime I go there, I want to see more of it. I've made TV in that building.

The best part is the Smithsonian museums are all free.

While not free, I like the Newseum and the International Spy Museum. It is my understanding the Newseum my be closing soon, possibly to relocate. Kind of sad that, some pictures I took in the wake of Sept. 11th and Oklahoma City Bombing are hanging in there. (My one claim to fame!)

Enjoy!

Hi everyone!

When I was in MD with Uncle Sam a few years ago I took the Metro into D.C. on one of my days off. Hit the major monuments and the Air & Space Museum. Had to see the Enterprise. It does look like the Newseum is closing at the end of the year. Johns Hopkins bought the building.

International Youth Day

International Youth Day focuses on the difficulties young people face around the globe. On August 12, we should make time to consider the problem of childhood poverty and the ways we can make life better for kids everywhere.

In 1985, the United Nations celebrated its first International Year of Youth, setting the stage for International Youth Day. In 1995, the UN marked the initiative’s tenth anniversary by implementing the World Programme of Action for Youth, establishing goals and guidelines to improve life for the world’s young people.

Finally, in 1999, the UN took things an exciting step further by declaring August 12 as International Youth Day. Since then, the world has spent each August considering how we can meet the needs of all global communities. By sustainably consuming our resources, we can provide young people with a more comfortable present and future.

How to Observe International Youth Day

Volunteer with young people in your community
A great way to help kids in your area is by simply being there for them. Join a volunteer organization that can help you become a big brother/big sister, help kids practice their schoolwork, deliver food to families in need or otherwise improve the lives of young people in your community.

Educate the kids in your life
If there are children in your life, explain to them in an age-appropriate way, that life isn’t always easy for kids around the world and that not all children have toys to play with or enough food to eat. Talk to them about how they can help make a difference for kids in need and aim to be a positive role model in their lives. Think about ways to improve the lives of the kids you know and take action, whenever possible.

Donate
Find a charity that aligns with your goals and donate extra money or items. You can donate children’s books to a local hospital or homeless shelter, drop off groceries at a food bank that serves young families or donate everyday necessities to a refugee organization. The possibilities are endless!

Why International Youth Day is Important

It focuses on building a better world for our children
International Youth Day does more than simply encouraging kids directly. It also lays out a set of priorities to focus on for creating tangible improvements in children’s lives. The fifteen priorities created by the UN include areas of focus like reducing cases of HIV/AIDS, fighting childhood hunger and providing more access to education.

It raises awareness about poverty
Many children go to bed hungry each night, or head to school in the morning without a nutritious breakfast to help them stay focused in class. In the United States alone, 13.1 million kids live in food insecure homes, which means that they and their families don’t have access to enough nutritious food to lead healthy lives. Children in other countries around the world face similar hardships, and many can find themselves trapped in a cycle of poverty that is difficult to break free from as they grow into adults. The more aware we are of these issues, the faster we can work together to help eradicate them.

It encourages creative thinking for a better future
International Youth Day’s list of actionable priorities encourages others to think about specific things they can do to make a tangible difference in kids’ lives. In recent writings about International Youth Day, the UN has put a strong focus on reducing pollution, sustainably using local products and services so they’ll remain available for the next generation and ensuring as many communities as possible will have access to resources. Naming such ambitious — but doable — goals serves as inspiration for all of us to think hard about efficient steps we can take to make them happen.

National Middle Child Day

Each year on August 12th, National Middle Child Day honors that in-between child in the family. Depending on the size of the family, sometimes more than one falls between the firstborn and baby of the family.

Many believe birth order plays a pivotal role in the personalities of children. The Middle Child Syndrome states that the first-born is often the leader and the role-player. Meanwhile, the youngest one earns the title of the baby family. Therefore, the middle child’s role remains undefined.

Birth order is known to contribute to the Big Five personality traits: extroversion, neuroticism, agreeableness, conscientiousness, and openness to experience. One personality study claims that middle children tend to be artistic and creative.

No matter what the personality tests and therapists say, the day directs us to focus on the middle child. This day means that parents and siblings pull out all the stops.Make your middle-born family members feel special.

HOW TO OBSERVE #NationalMiddleChildDay
Keep your middle child/children in mind. Try these ideas:

Make their favorite homemade dish and invite them over.
Send a card and share a memory of them. (Be sure the memory is of the middle child and not one of your other children.)
Invite your middle child for coffee.
Call your middle child to find out about their day. This is especially important if you don’t usually call.
Take a walk with your middle child. Throw a frisbee or do one of their favorite activities.
Play a card or board game.
If your middle child has a middle child, suggest all of you make a day of activities together.

National Middle Child Day History

National Middle Children’s Day was created by Elizabeth Walker in the 1980s. It was originally intended to be observed on the second Saturday in August, however, along the way it has become generally accepted to celebrate it on August 12. In a newspaper article submitted by her grandson, Litton Walker, III, Walker stated that she wanted to create a National day to honor those children “born in the middle of families” who she felt were “left out.” The name was later changed to National Middle Child Day.

Issues Test Bed wrote:The most obvious error in your statement is that assault weapons in private hands are very rare here.

Interesting explanation. I honestly did not know that, and as you say it is easy to assume that news sources are being more honest (or else, less dishonest) than they actually are. I imagine there is also a significant possibility of mission-creep involved in any attempt to regulate guns, that laws originally meant to prohibit certain weapons can rapidly lead to a slippery-slope towards wider prohibition.

Issues Test Bed wrote:However, none of these reasons are why the Second Amendment exists. Not to bring up a sore spot with our friends across the pond, but the founding fathers of this nation saw what happens when government disarms the population.

I quite agree. There must be restraints on the power of the government to secure the safety of the people; it’s what the United States Constitution (to my mind one of the fines documents ever produced) is designed to ensure. I wish we had a Second Amendment in Britain, and, for that matter, a First Amendment. Perpetually policing one’s speech to conform to secular social mores is not just tiresome, it’s stifling of freedom, innovation and creativity.

Indeed. I am not a massive fan of President Trump, and would have preferred Marco Rubio or a more orthodox conservative as President, but I sincerely hope the President wins re-election next year. If America wants to know what its future would look like under the current Democratic Party, it needs only to look at Europe. I hope it chooses a different path.

Well if you follow the news the DNC priority is in the past and not the present they keep advertising trump for free he really doesn't have to spend anything and with them still talking about impeachment and infringing the 2nd Amendment there shooting themselves in the foot and will lose again next year

Want to hear something odd Verner, not only have we never seen any of the five Robin Williams movies above, we quite possibly have never seen any Robin Williams movie. For some reason, we watched Mork weekly. Maybe that is it, we fried on Mork. Just never got him or his humor. Just like that other comedian that was from that same generation that died tragically. He was a dweeb - did lots on SNL, played a foreign guy, played like he was a wrestler and actually got hurt when he started messing with real wrestlers. Can't even remember his name now and am too lazy to google it.

You said it. While Trump was not my first choice in the primaries, he was the only viable option in the general election. I have to say, I've been pleasantly surprised by his work. He is doing (or trying to do) all the things he said he was going to do. His ability to makes heads spin with a single tweet has given me untold chuckles since before he took office.

Exactly. Our own politicians will tell you they intend to chip away at guns one law at a time. That is why I actively fight any new laws restricting guns, ammunition, sales or transfer, etc. When given an inch, invariably the our local, state and federal governments will try to take the next mile.

INTERNATIONAL LEFT HANDERS/SOUTHPAW DAY
International Left Handers Day on August 13th recognizes all those individuals who have mastered using their left hand in a right-handed world. We take our hats off to you – left-handed!

Approximately 10% of the population are southpaws. Scientists don’t know why a person develops left-handedness. But it’s more likely a child will be left-handed if one parent is a lefty, too. Parents of left-handed children used to force them to use their right hands. In the eyes of right-handers, the predominant use of the left hand seemed evil. Parents feared their communities would shun their children. While we accept left-handedness more readily than days gone by, its occurrence hasn’t increased.

Famous Cartoonist Joe Wos, founder of mazetoons, states that his favorite day to celebrate is International Left Handers Day, being a lefty himself.

Many lefties seek to blend in because they will stand out soon enough. Their unique quality makes them feel awkward. They bump elbows or seem like a klutz. However, in a world designed for the right-handed, those who are other dominant adapt quite well. For example, eight United States presidents were left-handed, including Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush, Bill Clinton, and Barack Obama. Would the Sistine Chapel and the Mona Lisa stand the test of time if Michaelangelo and Leonardo de Vinci had been right-handed?

Left Handers Day recognizes the uncommon individual who throws, catches, writes, and uses a fork with their left-hand. They view the world just a little differently. At a restaurant, they seek out the seat that will place their dominant elbow on the outside of the booth. Right-handed athletes groan a bit when the southpaw shows up as an opponent on the roster. They present a challenge right-handers aren’t always sure how to handle due to lack of practice. Lefties square off against righties all the time.

Don’t be shy on Left-Handers Day. Show the world how brilliant and unique you are!

HOW TO OBSERVE #LeftHandersDay
Take a left-handed friend to lunch or out for coffee. If you’re right-handed, try doing everything with your left hand.

INTERNATIONAL LEFT HANDERS DAY HISTORY
International Left Handers Day was founded in 1992 in the United Kingdom. Because of the popularity of this observation in the United States, the Registrar at National Day Calendar added the day to its list of national days.

NATIONAL PROSECCO DAY

National Prosecco Day on August 13 represents a time to raise a toast to the remaining days of the season. As we bask in the warmth of the resounding rays of summer, the day encourages people across the US to embrace life’s everyday celebrations.

A sparkling wine, Prosecco is made from a variety of grapes. One of the oldest is the Glera. However, Prosecco can also be made from Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, and Pinot Noir. Primarily grown and bottled in the Veneto region of Italy, Prosecco’s draw is its elegant mousse. In wine-speak, the mousse is the lovely, persistent bubbles. These bubbles give Prosecco the sparkle that makes it so appealing for celebrations.

Along with that touch of sweetness (usually dry) and light-bodied, refreshing aromas, Prosecco exudes an easygoing sense of fun. Flavors of white spring flowers, citrus fruits, and green apples paired with a wallet-friendly price tag place Prosecco in the right place for any celebration.

As the most sold sparkler in the U.S. – having surpassed the 4-million case mark (according to Impact Databank), it only fits that this long revered aperitivo of choice for Italians should earn its own ‘National Day’ of recognition. Some say no other beverage defines the Italian philosophy of la dolce vita, or the good life, quite like Prosecco.

Prosecco’s bubbles come in many forms. Spumante is the bubbliest of the proseccos followed by frizzante. Finally, the calmest is the tranquillo. As summer’s fun lulls into autumn’s social afterglow, National Prosecco Day reminds us of the fruits of our labors with its notes of apple and pear.

HOW TO OBSERVE #NationalProseccoDay
Enjoy Prosecco with friends over crab cakes and scallops on the beach or with goat cheese, prosciutto, and fresh garden tomatoes at your summer table. This sparkling wine pairs well from aperitif to dessert and even brunch cocktails the next day.

It’s as simple as picking up a couple of bottles of Prosecco, inviting some friends over and savoring summer’s end.

NATIONAL PROSECCO DAY HISTORY
Riondo Prosecco founded National Prosecco Day to celebrate the sparkling summer months. Riondo Prosecco earned #1 Prosecco in Italy in 2010 by Il Mio Vino magazine and Gold Medal Minner Vinitaly in 2011. Terlato Wines acquired the Riondo Prosecco brand on January 1, 2016. The Registrar at National Day Calendar approved the day in 2016.

Has anyone aside from myself noticed that certain players frequently make their point by belittling the other side? It's getting to the point that I'm seriously considering abandoning this region for one where all players can express their opinions without their opponents resorting to this sort of insulting behavior.

- It IS possible to be conservative without being insulting to liberals ... despite what Hannity, Rush, and Shapiro would have you think.
- It IS possible to be a centrist, listening to all sides and seeking a compromise solution that pleases no one entirely but satisfies most.
- It IS possible to be a liberal or progressive and not be a traitor to this nation. It's even possible for conservatives to support liberal ideas. Richard Nixon created the EPA, OSHA, the National Endowment for the Arts and the National Endowment for the Humanities. More Republicans than Democrats in Congress supported the Civil Rights Acts. This blind hatred of all things liberal is new, and disturbing.

As for the support for killing any and all gun control legislation ... I realize guns are a Texas thing, but I question the values (and the sanity) of anyone who values visiting the firing range over the lives of children. I don't care if "our own politicians will tell you they intend to chip away at guns one law at a time." They've not managed to do it in the past, and with attitudes like yours, I don't expect them to have much success in the future. When something isn't working (and gun ownership in the USA clearly isn't), it's time to look into fixing the problem. Blanket and un-nuanced pro-gun attitudes are hurting this nation.

I'm pretty much disgusted with about half of this region's RMB lately. I'd don't hold much hope of changing anyone's mind here, but if it doesn't change, I'm not hanging around to be your friendly neighborhood mod anymore.

Good morning Ladies and Gentlemen of Texas!

Today is:
National V-J Day
National Creamsicle Day
National Financial Awareness Day

Quote of the Day:
Perseverance is not a long race; it is many short races one after the other. - Walter Elliot

Music of the Day:

Mike Oldfield ft. Maggie Reilly - Moonlight Shadow (Official Video)

1880 Construction of Cologne Cathedral completed after it began in 1248 - largest Gothic cathedral in Northern Europe

1885 Japan's first patent is issued to the inventor of a rust-proof paint.

1974 Congress authorizes US citizens to own gold

2015 Most extensive face transplant surgery ever performed on Patrick Hardison by Dr. Eduardo Rodriguez at New York University Langone Medical Center

National V-J Day (Victory over Japan Day)

National V-J Day on August 14th commemorates the day in 1945 when news broke around the world the Imperial Government of Japan would surrender ending a long a grueling world war. In Europe, the date was August 15 due to the time zone, but regardless the celebrations that broke out were no less zealous.

Since 1939, the entire world had been enduring the strife of war. The first rumblings began in 1937 but by the end of 1941, the United States would join the war they had vowed remain out of. After the bombing of Pearl Harbor by Japan on December 7th, 1941, the United States declared war and fully supported all fronts.

Throughout the war effort, military personnel and civilians stood together to make the next 4 years a united front. Victory in Japan and the rest of the globe was a final goal.

How to Observe #VJDay
Learn about the war in the Pacific. Tour Pearl Harbor or read accounts of the efforts.

National V-J Day History
In the United States, President Harry S. Truman announced it in a press conference at the White House later that day. The peace treaty was officially signed on September 2, 1945. A year later on August 2nd, Truman signed a proclamation declaring August 14, 1946, as Victory Day.

National Financial Awareness Day

How much would you like to bet that most people don’t know August 14 is National Financial Awareness Day?

It’s more important than you think. And plus, what’s more fun than financial independence? First off, think about that great feeling you get when you don’t have the looming specter of debt hanging over you. Also, sound financial decisions can really make a difference down the road. Remember, retirement is a time to take all those vacations you couldn’t when you were working the daily grind. Because money is important to our overall peace of mind, Financial Awareness Day is a great time to review where you are now and where you’re going financially. Don’t let bad financial decisions ruin the best years of your life!

National Financial Awareness Day – History

1959
Put it on plastic

American Express introduced its first credit card in 1958 and the following year releases the first plastic credit card.

1950
Check, please

Frank McNamara and Ralph Schneider introduce the Diners Club Card as an alternative to cash. It has 20,000 cardholders in a year.

1946
Charge ahead

John Biggins, a banker in Brooklyn, introduces the "Charg-It" card, believed to be the first bank card. (Customers used it at local businesses, who then forwarded the bill to the bank.)

How to Observe National Financial Awareness Day

Invest
Got some money burning a hole in your pocket? Instead of spending it on some fleeting luxury, why not get in on some of that sweet return-on-investment action? Very rarely do you get the chance to spend your money on something that gives a bit back — well, unless you take a trip to Vegas, but those odds are for suckers. In the end playing it safe is always sexier than spending it all. Use National Financial Awareness Day as an excuse to start investing. It’s sure to pay off!

Take a trip to the U.S. Mint
What better way to celebrate money than by finding out how it’s made? There are four U.S. mint locations: Philadelphia, Denver, San Francisco and West Point. If pennies aren’t quite as pretty as paper to you, head down to the U.S. Bureau of Engraving and Printing or BEP for short. Not only do they offer tours and rare currency products, but you can take any of those ratty dollars that accidentally got tossed in the dryer and redeem them for free. How’s that for smart money?

Get smart about your money
National Financial Awareness Day is the perfect opportunity to make a budget. We know, we know, it’s not an attractive task but it’s so important. Find out where you spend your money by making a spreadsheet or using one of the many online services and apps that will do it for you. The numbers may shock you but that’s okay — knowledge is power!

Why National Financial Awareness Day is Important

It celebrates Easy Street
As the saying goes, why work for your money when you can make it work for you? Sometimes in the seemingly endless race to chase that paper, we forget that we don’t always need to take the uphill course. With the right knowledge, you can make the road to riches far less bumpy and a lot more scenic. Sound investment practices can help you spend less time working and more time enjoying your life.

It teaches us that finances don’t have to be confusing
In the land of the blind, the one-eyed man is king and if there's one thing most people are clueless about, it’s finance. There’s no downside to having a bit of financial literacy in life. It’s a subject many people find daunting, but taking the initiative to learn how money works will make all your peers green with envy. Just like everyone flocks to that one mechanically-inclined friend when their car breaks down, you’ll be that guy — but for money. Plus, when your car breaks down you can just buy a better one!

It reminds us to prepare for the unforeseeable future
They say money can’t buy you happiness. Perhaps — but not having money can sure bring you a lot of sadness. That’s why it’s so important to make sound investment decisions now so you’re not suffering later. You never know what kind of pitfalls life may throw your way but there’s no better safety net than having a nice contingency fund in your pocket.

Did you know?

On this very day, 2,605 years ago, the Temple in Jerusalem was destroyed by the Babylonians. And, in an extreme bit of coincidence and misfortune, exactly 2,089 years ago today, on an August 14th, Rome destroyed the Temple in Jerusalem! What are the odds that temple would be destroyed twice, on August 14th 516 years apart? Wow. Solemn Tish'a B'Av (תשעה באב) to our Jewish Texans. And please correct us if we got that wrong. We got that from a co-worker, but had to research it a bit. Seems like his Temple may be celebrating it a little off date (August 10-11). Guess when you are dealing with dates that far back, it is hard to get it exactly right. But, the story goes it was the same day for the only two times it was fully-destroyed.

Just a little thing we learned about today.

I did not know those events occurred around the same time. I've studied both a little bit but not the specific dates.

Looked at apartments today, put in an application for one I liked. Hopefully, I'll be moved in by the end of next week.

You kind of better be! Drive over there, get you a cheap motel, and spend a day or two checking it out. Find out what the "bad side" of town is and don't even look there, regardless of price. It is not always the "South Side". For example, when we moved to NewAustin, we did not know it was the East Side. In NewSanAntonio, it was the South Side. Same for NewMemphis. As a teenager, went to Voodoo Village on the South Side of NewMemphis on a lark, yes, it was just as scary as it sounded and never went there again! Would have gotten a whuppin' if we hadn't been too big for such. MaTex was not amused.

And Trec, if you are not seeing anything good, call, or drop in an apartment finder. They usually don't charge a fee, they get their money elsewhere. And they do know where to move and where not to.

I skipped over several apartments that looked to be in sketchy areas. The one I chose is in a nice area. Instead of one large building they're smaller single story units in groups of four.

Less neighbors to worry about and right next to a shopping center. No more than 20 minutes to work.

Frisbeeteria wrote:Has anyone aside from myself noticed that certain players

Don't be shy. You can name names. You will not hurt my feelings in the least.

Sen. Warren doesn't need my help to be insulted. The woman is a walking insult. Chief among her grievous transgressions, the Senator is an insult to every American Indian. Her fraudulent actions, impersonating a minority to gain extra advantages in the course of her schooling and her career was so bad, the tribe she claimed to be a member of asked her to stop making the claim. She is also an insult to anyone with even a passing knowledge of economics and what makes the US Economy run. In fact, when it comes to taxes and spending, she is an insult to anyone that can do math.

As for the Second Amendment, I made my point. All said and done it is not about popping off rounds at the range. As much fun as that is, bottom line: It is all about self defense.

Disarming me because people I do not know, have never met and have zero control over did something really bad makes almost as much sense as banning all smartphones because many people will not leave them alone while they are driving.

The only thing a gun confiscation will do is leave the bad guys in possession of their guns and a stunning number of soft targets for them to pick off at their leisure.

One last thing to consider. If the left is successful in revoking the Second Amendment, or even abridging it significantly, what part of the Bill of Rights is next? The Fourth and Fifth Amendments are really a pain in the tail for law enforcement. Over the years many on the left made attempts to limit the First Amendment through Hush Rush bills, attempts to expand the equal time laws on talk radio broadcasters, and even limit what a preacher may say to their flock, especially during election season.

While you are considering all this, never forget the political pendulum is always swinging. When these rights are abridged, even by the people you like, eventually that power will be in the other court.

One last thing, while it is possible to be a liberal or progressive and not be a traitor to the nation, this is going to be an extremely difficult goal to meet. The general premise of this nation is liberty. That means freedom. Freedom to succeed or fail. Freedom to do what one wishes within the law. Freedom to be left alone to live one's life as one sees fit.

Most importantly, this nation was founded on certain freedoms from government intrusions in your life. The Bill of Rights, which contains the Second Amendment, is a list of things that government cannot do to you. With some few exceptions, the government cannot stop you from speaking in public, cannot create a state religion, cannot search your home without a warrant, cannot force you to testify against yourself, cannot take your property without just compensation, and cannot stop you from keeping and bearing arms.

The left is all about control. They want to control what you can eat, how big your soft drink is, what kind of straw you can have, even the freedom to drive a car where you want and when you want.

The left in this nation hassle and harrass politicians and their staff as they eat dinner. They riot in the streets because their candidate lost an election. In fact, they are so upset over the last election they want to do away with the Electoral College. The Democrats are still trying to undo the last election through all kinds of wild tales. The left brought obviously false charges against Judge Kavanaugh just to try to push the confirmation process beyond the 2018 election cycle. Democrats are still trying to undo the sanctity of income tax returns because they think there might be something juicy in President Trump's returns.

They utterly destroy people supporting their political opponents on social media. They harass them at their jobs or businesses they own just for contributing money to the wrong candidate or cause. They act as vigilante mobs, taking "justice" into their own hands vandalizing web sites, trashing out ratings and lying on social media about any business owner that objects to attending a gay wedding or violating any other politically protected cause. They force ridiculous attempts at thought control and New Speak standards right out of Orwell's 1984 on college students. They attack people for wearing MAGA hats and vandalize cars with conservative bumper stickers. Opponents of Proposition 8 in California took to harassing children on the way to school if their parents supported the amendment.

So tell me again how these fun loving people are not a threat to the freedoms of this nation. I'm so not getting it.

The statements in this post are my own and do not necessarily reflect the views of Texas, its management, or staff.

In non-political news, I tried the Reeses donuts yesterday. The PB one was better in my opinion as it was filled with Peanut Butter. The Chocolate one was filled with Chocolate. I was expecting a Chocolate donut with PB filling.

Also: New poll is up.
