***** State of The Region Address *****

August 4, 2019

Greetings Citizens of Texas!

It is our great pleasure to announce that the nomination process is over for the Second Trimester 2019 Texas Elections. The following is the slate for the new Government of Texas. This week will be a time for candidates to campaign, debate and make speeches on the offsite forum. Next Sunday we will begin the elections. Join all the fun on the offsite forum at:

https://www.tapatalk.com/groups/texas1/2019-2nd-trimester-elections-f275/

Election Notes are in that forum as well.

We have about the tamest round of Elections you can get in the Texas Cabinet with no positions being contested. As a matter of fact, it is so tame, it is only incumbents running. You know what, as Governor of Texas, that is fine by us. If the current Cabinet was not doing their job, then we would have nominated some peeps we thought could do it better to run against them. We could not think of a department where we would even consider doing that. As we always say, candidates need to remember, there is RL work involved in these positions versus RP work, of which there is some of that too. These are not cushy jobs; just ask any of them. As usual, all races will have the ever-pesky and dreaded No Confidence to run against.

For the real race this Trimester, well, it is not in the Texas Representative Council either. We have another very tame race the five living incumbents. We do have the returning rookie from last Trimester, Verner von Richtofen, of Fort Verden, making a return both to life and office after a series of unfortunate events last Trimester. Get well soon, buddy. We hope that does not bias anyone's vote. We do not expect any mudslinging in this race and will trade in our yellow slicker for our sweater vest. We like to think that all the incumbents are a tribute to the job that they are doing and have done in the past representing The Great Region of Texas! Kudos nominees!

In these 58th Texas Elections, as in every election, a well-made speech or no-speech may decide the final 5. That is a serious tip for would-be TRC members. * wink * Texas, please join us in saluting all our nominees for Texas Government!

Congratulations to all the Candidates!

Governor (non-elected)

NATIONAL VEEP DAY

National Veep Day on August 9th recognizes the succession plan of the President of the United States. The day also acknowledges the one president who was neither elected vice president nor president – Gerald Ford.

In Case of the Removal of the President from Office, or of his Death, Resignation, or Inability to discharge the Powers and Duties of the said Office, the Same shall devolve on the Vice President, and the Congress may by Law provide for the Case of Removal, Death, Resignation or Inability, both of the President and Vice President, declaring what Officer shall then act as President, and such Officer shall act accordingly, until the Disability be removed, or a President shall be elected.

- ARTICLE II, SECTION 1, CLAUSE 6

In the history of the United States, 14 vice presidents became President. The people elected only 5 of them at some point after completing their terms as vice president. The other eight ascended to the presidency due to the death of the president. And then there is one vice president who became president who was never elected at all.

Vice President Facts

John Tyler
After one month of being sworn in, President William Henry Harrison died in office in 1841. His vice president, John Tyler, ascended to the presidency.

Millard Fillmore
Millard Fillmore filled the vacancy left by the death of President Zachary Taylor in 1850

Andrew Johnson
Andrew Johnson was President Abraham Lincoln’s second term vice president. His term began when Lincoln died after John Wilkes Booth’s successful assassination of the president at Ford’s Theater.

Chester Arthur
When Charles J. Guiteau assassinated President James Garfield in 1881, Vice President Chester Arthur completed his term.

Theodore Roosevelt
President William McKinley’s first vice president died of a heart attack. During McKinley’s second term, Theodore Roosevelt served as his Veep. Then McKinley was assassinated six months into the term. Roosevelt became the third vice president to step up under these circumstances.

Calvin Coolidge
After the death of President Warren G. Harding in 1923, Vice President Calvin Coolidge ascended to the presidency. He also ran and won a second term.

Harry S. Truman
President Franklin D. Roosevelt was the only president to run for and win three terms. He also had three different vice presidents. His third Veep, Harry S. Truman, ascended to the presidency when FDR died in 1945 after just three months in office.

Lyndon B. Johnson
The fourth president to be assassinated in the United States was John F. Kennedy. Lyndon B. Johnson served as his vice president. An interesting note: Richard Nixon, whom this day is partially inspired by, ran unsuccessfully against JFK. Before running for president, Nixon served two terms as veep for President Dwight Eisenhower. After his losing presidential runs, Nixon would run again and win two consecutive terms.

Gerald Ford
Nixon’s first vice president was Spiro Agnew. However, Agnew resigned in 1973. Gerald Ford obtained the position of vice president by appointment. When Nixon later resigned in 1974, Ford ascended to the presidency. He’s the only president to service who was neither elected to the position of veep or president.

HOW TO OBSERVE #NationalVeepDay
Brush up on your vice-presidential history. While you’re at it, check into your government history, too.

NATIONAL VEEP DAY HISTORY

NATIONAL CONNECTICUT DAY

Woven into the fabric of this state’s historic landscape, we find revolutionaries, innovators, and philosophers. On August 10, National Connecticut Day recognizes the contributions of the fifth state to join the United States of America.

Like other colonies of the region, the Dutch first explored and founded trading posts in Connecticut. In 1633, Puritans from Massachusetts established the first permanent settlement. From the outset, the industry established a means to prosperity in the colony. Production of brass buttons and munitions placed the colony in a position to later supply the Revolutionary Army. The colonial governor of Connecticut, Jonathan Trumbull, was the only governor who supported independence.

All three Connecticut delegates to the first Continental Congress continued their representation of the colony at the Second Congress and signed the Declaration of Independence.

In fact, Roger Sherman is the only person to have signed the Continental Association, the Declaration of Independence, the Articles of Confederation and the United States Constitution. Eliphalet Dyer served the state of Connecticut as chief justice after the revolution.

Silas Deane served as a spy during the war and was for a time branded a traitor along with another Connecticut native, Benedict Arnold. He died penniless, but decades later in 1840, his granddaughter would petition Congress to review his records. His name would be cleared.

Connecticut’s small but full landscape holds countless revolutionary stories and adventures along New England’s National Scenic Trail. Through every season and every era, there’s something for every generation to enjoy!

NATIONAL GARAGE SALE DAY

National Garage Sale Day on the second Saturday in August recognizes the perfect time to sell our good, but used items. Set up the tables and price your things. Or, head out around the neighborhood looking for great deals.

A successful garage sale requires a little planning and organization.

Sort like items together.
Keep prices reasonable, but don’t undersell. Also, don’t price anything less than a quarter. Who wants to make small change?

Clearly price items.
Be willing to negotiate. You don’t want to pack up the items again, do you?
Wash and fold the clothes. Clean items sell more quickly that musty, wrinkled clothes.
Place clearly marked signs in ideal locations. (Check your local ordinances. Some cities only allow signs on boulevards or not at all.)

Be prepared with plenty of small bills.
If you advertise, be clever. A humorous note about your vast collection will catch garage sale hunter’s eyes more quickly than the ho-hum, everyday ad. For the savvy shopper, garage sales offer an inexpensive way to update their decor. They also help young families obtain gently used items for their children and homes.

HOW TO OBSERVE #NationalGarageSaleDay
Get out and seek some deals. Or better yet, clean out the attic and basement. Put some price on those antiques and make some money.

NATIONAL GARAGE SALE DAY HISTORY
C. Daniel Rhodes of Alabama created National Garage Sale Day in 2001. After seeing neighbors having sales on different weekends, Rhoades thought coordinating sales on the same weekend would be convenient. He is also the founder of Mulligan Day and Brother’s Day.

Yahootie! Saturday breakfast time! For today's dining delight, courtesy of The Big Tex Happy Taco Stands of NewTexas, we present Saturday Atomic Tacos! Get your day started off right with a behemoth taco. This mammoth breakfast taco has everything in it including the kitchen sink! It starts with a full 12" handmade flour tortilla generously-smeared with freshly smashed, fried and refried beans all prepared lovingly by genuine Texas abuelitas. That is then liberally topped with a healthy handful of freshly-shredded Longhorn Jack cheese followed by a generous scoop of Spanish rice. We then nestle in copious amounts of Texas farm-fresh, hen-house, super jumbo, organic, Grade A brown scrambled eggs and more cheese. Next, we throw on crumbled, spicy, in-house-made chorizo, a couple of slices of ultra-crispy bacon, more eggs, a goodly amount of fried potatoes, more cheese, some freshly grilled beef fajita meat, homemade guacamole and then we top it all off with our own ooey-gooey jalapeño queso! You will be hard-pressed to keep this beast closed, much less, fit it into your mouth. We have the Salsa Bar up and running with everything you could possibly want to top your taco including Fresh Pico de Gallo, Fire-Roasted Salsa, Cheesy Queso, and fresh Cilantro! ***** Texas Election Reminder *****

In Texas Election News, the Second Trimester 2019 Texas Elections Speech & Campaign Week is winding down. This Election is very calm, and, like the last one, is very light on speeches. To say that there are not very many of them would be an overstatement. There is actually only one plus a poster. Kudos to the remainder of the field for their fine, if not brief acknowledgments on the RMB. With No Confidence being the sleeper candidate in every Cabinet race, a speech may be just what is needed to fend them off. We believe that here in NewTexas and are sure that will change soon (* dings Head Speech Writer *). This is just the kind of foothold No Confidence likes.

Election Week starts Sunday, August 11, 2019, at High Noon Texas Time (GMT -6). So you only have about 1¼ days if you have any more speeches to make before voting starts for your Texas Cabinet and Texas Representative Council positions. We always enjoy speeches and there is plenty of room for more. Candidates can take it right down to the wire when the polls close but sooner is definitely better than later.

If you would like to make some Constitutional Amendments, Repeals to offer and or would like to propose new Articles, then you also only have until August 11th - Tomorrow! Or, if you just have questions on how this works, there is a link to the forum at the top of this page and a link to more information at the top of the page on the offsite forum!

Just to be clear Texas Elections are here:

Threads are up and ready! Let's go, Texas!

***** Texas Chat Reminder *****

The Texas Weekly Chat Session will be Saturday (TODAY) at High Noon Texas Time (CDT) ***Saturday***. And, if you can't be there right at Noon, that is Ok, Texas Chat usually runs 3, 4, 5 hours with some Chats running as high as 7 or 8 hours.

The Texas Chat Site is here: http://texasregion.net/blab70/login.php

Please register with your nation name. This is a great opportunity for nations old and new to Texas to find out what is going on! We chat, we debate, we talk about the weather, we talk about stuff we like, stuff we hate, random stuff and more stuff. But, it is never stuffy. Usually, it is about meeting your fellow Texans and talking about the latest and most interesting stuff in NationStates at the moment. But then again, sometimes NationStates does not even come up. It is wide-open chatting with peeps from around The World both IRL and NS. It is Texans, EuroTexans, WannabeTexans, ex-Texans, and plenty of Friends of Texans. We have it all and all are welcome. Texas Chat, 751 weeks and running! For the math-challenged, that is over 15 years! Check it out! Good stuff!
