The Kelvin timeline movies were decent. Not my favorite Trek movies, but an enjoyable few hours.

Issues Test Bed wrote:You overlooked the fact that cats are historically certified Egyptian Gods™. Of course cats were going to win the poll. Who wants the raining toads and locust plagues?

Locusts and toads are edible delicacies. Locusts are eaten in many African, Middle Eastern and Asian countries. Frogs and toads are eaten in China, Indonesia, Vietnam, Thailand, France, Northern Italy, the Alentejo region of Portugal, Spain, Albania, Slovenia, Romania, Northwest Greece, Southern United States, Brazil and Mexico. So I don't mind raining toads and locust plagues. They'd be a source of free food. :D

Good morning Ladies and Gentlemen of Texas!

I hope June will be a good month for everyone in Texas including myself and my family. Yesterday I finally acted upon the feedback I requested and received for my Daily Posts prior to my becoming ill for the second time. I have added the "Music of the Day" and "One Headline from one of the National News Services for Discussion" features and shortened "On This Day In History" as suggested/requested. I should have informed everyone by posting this message at the start of my post yesterday. From now on, click on the day’s date to find the Daily Post in a spoiler like the one below:

Today is:
National Safe Day
National Cheese Day
National Old Maid Day
National Cognac Day

Quote of the Day:
"When writing the story of your life, don't let anyone else hold the pen."
- Harley Davidson

Music of the Day:
(The Music of the Day feature was suggested by Kyletana)

Princesses vs Princes Epic Disney Battle - Peter Hollens
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xJ652U7PTVQ

Anything from Peter Hollens must be very good and this music video is no exception. Watch until the end of the song to see Peter Hollens gets knocked out by his own wife Evynne Hollens as Belle. Nyah ha ha ha! :)

On This Day In History:

1969 22-year-old man sneaks into wheel pod of a jet parked in Havana and survives 9-hr flight to Spain despite thin oxygen levels at 29,000 ft

However, since spoilers cannot be nested i.e. spoiler within a spoiler, here’s more info about National SAFE Day:

NATIONAL SAFE DAY

June 4th and National SAFE Day holds the power to prevent tragedy from repeating itself. One in every three households in the United States has a gun stored somewhere inside. The Brooklynn Mae Mohler Foundation is committed to ending senseless child deaths through education of responsible gun ownership and empowering parents to ask about guns where their children visit.

How many close friends does a child have? One in three households has a firearm. If one of those households has a gun, is it secure? What about family members? Do they visit cousins or other relatives that may have unsecured guns? Secure storage is vital to the safety of children and is the responsibility of the gun owner.

The life of one innocent child is not worth challenging the odds of possibility. There are many ways to secure a firearm, that still allow for fast access, and there is no excuse to place easy access above child safety.

Parents, whether gun owners or not, need to take steps to educate children and to ask the question when in homes where their children visit– “Are there any unsecured firearms in the home?”

A recent study in JAMA Pediatrics reports few firearms owners (30 percent) secure all guns in the home, and even a modest increase could prevent up to one third of firearm-related youth suicides and unintentional deaths. Securing medications is also increasingly important to deter a growing drug epidemic. Each day, more than 1,750 teens abuse a prescription drug for the first time.

Take actions to protect those who matter most to you by securing all firearms and prescription medications.

HOW TO OBSERVE

S - Secure all firearms and pharmaceuticals.

A - Ask whether there are any unsecured firearms or drugs in the homes your children visit.

F - Frequently talk to children about the dangers of firearms and pharmaceutical drugs.

E - Educate and Empower others to be SAFE.

HISTORY

National SAFE Day was submitted by the Brooklynn Mae Mohler Foundation in 2016 and was approved by the Registrar at National Day Calendar. On June 4, 2013, Brooklynn Mae Mohler was the victim of a preventable shooting due to an unsecured firearm in a friend’s home.

National SAFE Day was founded to honor 13-year-old Brooklynn Mae Mohler, who was killed when her best friend picked up a loaded handgun found in a kitchen cabinet. Every year, children die in shootings that could have been prevented by responsible gun security. In ninety percent of firearm-related youth suicides and unintentional shootings, the firearm came from the home of the victim, or from a friend or family member. Likewise, most teens (90 percent) who abuse pharmaceutical drugs obtain them from their home medicine cabinet or their friends. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports more Americans are addicted to prescription drugs than cocaine, heroin and meth combined, and more Americans die of opioid use than breast cancer.

One Headline from one of the National News Services for Discussion:

Three things that will cause YOUR Social Security benefits to go down!
https://www.usatoday.com/story/money/2019/06/03/avoid-reducing-your-social-security-benefits/1323491001/

Speaking of Social Security, this is an extremely important ALERT:

Social Security impostor scam: It is growing, and this is how it works

The scammers can be clever. With numerous data breaches that have hit corporate America, fraudsters may already have accurate personal information about you, including your real Social Security number, Breyault said. The information is used to build trust and make the call seem more legitimate, he added.

According to Fraud.org and the FTC, here are some important things to remember:

* Don't trust your phone's caller ID. Scammers can make it look as if the Social Security Administration is calling and even use the agency's real number.

* Don't give your Social Security number, other personal information, to a caller on the phone.

* Social Security will never suspend your number, according to Fraud.org. If anyone tells you something different, you're being scammed.

* Social Security will never call you and demand money. No government agency will demand you pay something using gift cards or Bitcoin either.

* If you have a question, check with the real Social Security Administration. The administration will never contact you out of the blue. The agency's number is 1-800-772-1213. (https://www.ssa.gov/agency/contact/phone.html)

* Talk about the scam with friends, family and neighbors. Report government impostor scams to the FTC at ftc.gov/complaint.

https://www.usatoday.com/story/money/2019/05/14/social-security-impostor-scam/3664053002/

This is not news for discussion but an interesting ALERT:

If you happen to have a few Euros, Pesos or Pounds lying around, you can soon take them to McDonald's to pay for your meal.

For three hours only this week, the fast-food chain will accept any amount of foreign currency to pay for items off its new Worldwide Favorites Menu.

The deal is only available this Thursday June 6th from 2 p.m. until 5 p.m. and is limited to four items.

The international item menu, which launches on Wednesday, includes a Stroopwafel McFlurry from the Netherlands, a Grand McExtreme Bacon Burger from Spain, a Tomato Mozzarella Chicken Sandwich from Canada, and Cheesy Bacon Fries from Australia:

-- Stroopwafel McFlurry (The Netherlands): Vanilla soft serve, mixed with a caramel swirl, featuring chopped Dutch Daelmans Stroopwafel caramel waffle cookie pieces.

-- Grand McExtreme Bacon Burger (Spain): A quarter pound of beef topped with thick cut Applewood smoked bacon, smoky McBacon Sauce, real Gouda cheese and slivered onions on a toasted sesame seed bun.

-- Tomato Mozzarella Chicken Sandwich (Canada): Made with grilled or crispy white-meat chicken and topped with tomato and herb sauce, mozzarella cheese, slivered onions, lettuce and sliced Roma tomatoes served on a toasted artisan roll.

-- Cheesy Bacon Fries (Australia) - McDonald's fries topped with cheddar cheese sauce and chopped Applewood Smoked bacon.

The promotion is limited to ONE international menu item per person. Therefore, bring your friends and relatives with you if you want to purchase and sample all of the items.

**** New WA Resolution Notification *****

There is currently a new Security Council Resolution at vote. When expressing your opinion, please note which Resolution it is for. And remember Texans, your individual vote does count!

The new Resolution is called:
"Commend Woonsocket
A resolution to recognize outstanding contribution by a nation or region.

Category: Commendation Nominee: Woonsocket Proposed by: Sargon Reman

The Security Council,

RECOGNIZING that since its formation fifteen years ago, the nation of Woonsocket has contributed overwhelmingly to"...

<see the Security Council for full text and to vote>

Commentary: The Security Council wishes to Commend a Friend of Texas for over 6 years. We met Woonsocket in 2013 as they became Delegate of one of our oldest allies, 10000 Islands. Woonsocket/Woonrocket have been the penultimate diplomat and defender in all the years we have known them. There is not a single bad thing we can think of when it comes to Woonsocket. He is really a great guy worthy of this Commendation. We encourage all to support this Resolution. NewTexas will go on record as FOR on this Resolution. This is only the opinion of NewTexas. We look forward to other Texans' opinions and comments on this Resolution. If good arguments to the contrary are made, we will reconsider our position.

The Texas response was down on the last SC vote -- "Condemn The Land of Kings and Emperors" -- which was defeated after gaining only 44.4% of the vote. As a reminder, all we are looking for is a simple 10% of Texans to say one way or another. We are a force for change in the WA. Every vote counts! There were 3 publicly-expressed opinions on the last Resolution with the final Texas tally running 3 FOR and 0 AGAINST and 0 ABSTAIN and 0 UNDECIDED. Texans were unanimous! Yay!

If you would like to take part in shaping the world you live in, please vote. Voting is a right and a privilege, please consider using it. And, if you are not a member of the World Assembly, we strongly encourage you to join.

All Texas WA Member nations please vote. Please make your Texan opinions known in Texas by 11:00 PM Wednesday and in the World Assembly voting booth by 11:00 PM Texas Time on Wednesday the 6th. Current voting in The World is running - Votes FOR: 8688 Votes AGAINST: 2911

Gig em Aggies wrote:what about SGU? did that not confuse you?

Are you talking about the TV series? If so, it was good enough to hold my interest. Although the stories got a little repetitive after a while.

Fort Verden wrote:Parents, whether gun owners or not, need to take steps to educate children and to ask the question when in homes where their children visit– “Are there any unsecured firearms in the home?”

My answer to that question, and the answer my children were instructed to give when they lived at home, is "Information will be given on a need to know basis."

Even though I have a black belt in snark, that answer is not meant to practice that fine art. The fact is that gun owners are sometimes targeted by both thieves and activists. This is especially true when one's neighborhood, public school system, or local government is inhabited by liberal busybodies with no other life than to try to run other people's lives.

The number of weapons in my home and the security surrounding those weapons is not for public consumption.

My children gave roughly the same answer if questioned about weapons in our home. While they already knew not to discuss the guns in the house with others, those instructions were reinforced in the wake of policy established by then Superintendent of the San Marcos, TX school system, Hector someone-or-other after the Columbine school shooting.

That policy required students to answer questions by school officials or police about the number and type of weapons in their home. There was nothing in that policy about probable cause or what would become of that information.

In the course of these "community safety questions" students were also asked whether or not they ever handle the weapons, if they were knowledgeable in their use, and if the student has ever fired them.

Students resisting this line of questioning were subject to counseling, disciplinary action, and possible suspension or expulsion.

Up until then I never thought I would see a day where it was necessary for me to tell my children to remain silent before school officials, repeating the mantra "I have nothing to say until my parent is present."

Fort Verden wrote:Take actions to protect those who matter most to you by securing all firearms and prescription medications.

Define secure.

While not going into the specific security surrounding the weapons in my home, it is safe to say I will never be in the unfortunate position of having to politely ask an intruder to wait quietly while I spin the dial on a gun safe.

One of the reasons I keep firearms around is home defense. Where I live the Sheriff's average emergency response time is 20 minutes. This assumes there is nothing going on that drew all the deputies to the other side of the county. If I have an emergency need for defense, I cannot wait 20 minutes for help. That problem will be resolved one way or the other in the first 90 seconds. It is my strong preference that resolution is in my favor.

Having to litigate with a gun safe while someone is kicking in your front door is not conducive to a favorable resolution to that situation.

Fort Verden wrote:E - Educate and Empower others to be SAFE.

I wholeheartedly agree with education. But I'm guessing my idea of firearms education and the authors of the "SAFE" program are not on the same set of rails.

Alas, the powers that be over our most of our public schools removed hunting safety classes and the weapons portion of ROTC programs, if not the entire ROTC program, from our schools.

With first person shooter video games and Hollywood setting gun safety examples for the last generation or so, my guess is that not one in 20 teenagers today can explain muzzle awareness or trigger discipline.

NATIONAL RUNNING DAY

Each year on the first Wednesday in June, people across the United States participate in National Running Day. This day was designated as a day for runners to reaffirm their passion for running. It is also a good day for beginners to begin a life-changing commitment to running.

For some, running is a daily routine. The moment the runner awakes, their mission is to complete a set distance. They may have a partner, or they go it alone. Others fit in a run when time allows or at the end of their workday. The marathoner will train on a schedule, and the dedicated runner knows they have to take care of their feet, knees and eat right to maintain their bodies for the road.

Whatever the distance, National Running Day is about placing one foot in front of the other and setting a pace.

HOW TO OBSERVE

Whether you run a few miles or just around the block, by yourself or with a friend or three, this is a perfect day to go for a run!

HISTORY

Running organizations have partnered together since 2009 to promote National Running Day. For more information visit globalrunningday.org.

Transcript of General Dwight D. Eisenhowers Order of the Day (1944)
SUPREME HEADQUARTERS
ALLIED EXPEDITIONARY FORCE

Soldiers, Sailors, and Airmen of the Allied Expeditionary Force!

You are about to embark upon the Great Crusade, toward which we have striven these many months. The eyes of the world are upon you. The hope and prayers of liberty-loving people everywhere march with you. In company with our brave Allies and brothers-in-arms on other Fronts, you will bring about the destruction of the German war machine, the elimination of Nazi tyranny over the oppressed peoples of Europe, and security for ourselves in a free world.

Your task will not be an easy one. Your enemy is will trained, well equipped and battle-hardened. He will fight savagely.

But this is the year 1944! Much has happened since the Nazi triumphs of 1940-41. The United Nations have inflicted upon the Germans great defeats, in open battle, man-to-man. Our air offensive has seriously reduced their strength in the air and their capacity to wage war on the ground. Our Home Fronts have given us an overwhelming superiority in weapons and munitions of war, and placed at our disposal great reserves of trained fighting men. The tide has turned! The free men of the world are marching together to Victory!

I have full confidence in your courage, devotion to duty and skill in battle. We will accept nothing less than full Victory!

Good luck! And let us beseech the blessing of Almighty God upon this great and noble undertaking.

even though WW2 is my favorite era of history I would crap my pants many times over going in on the Higgins boats knowing the Reaper was laying in wait for me on the either end of the ramp.

It wants to create a Judiciary Committee with the power to create all manner of trial courts and appellate courts and who knows whatever else courts. All this is to bring "an anarchic body of noncompliant members" in line with World Assembly Resolutions and dish out whatever punishments it deems necessary short of capital punishment. Count us as not only an anarchic body but one who wants fewer laws, not more. NewTexas will go on record as AGAINST on this Resolution. This is only the opinion of NewTexas. We look forward to other Texans' opinions and comments on this Resolution. If good arguments to the contrary are made, we will reconsider our position.

The Texas response was down on the last GA vote -- Right to Farm -- which was defeated after gaining only 34.2% of the vote. As a reminder, all we are looking for is a simple 10% of Texans to say one way or another. We are a force for change in the WA. Every vote counts! There were 2 publicly-expressed opinions on the last Resolution with the final Texas tally running 0 FOR and 2 AGAINST and 0 ABSTAIN and 0 UNDECIDED. Texans were unanimous! Yay!

If you would like to take part in shaping the world you live in, please vote. Voting is a right and a privilege, please consider using it. And, if you are not a member of the World Assembly, we strongly encourage you to join.

All Texas WA Member nations please vote. Please make your Texan opinions known in Texas by 11:00 PM Monday and in the World Assembly voting booth by 11:00 AM Texas Time on Tuesday the 11th. Current voting in The World is running - Votes FOR: 6750 Votes AGAINST: 2024

The Texas response was down on the last GA vote -- Preventing Species Extinction -- which was passed after gaining 89.9% of the vote. Yay!

We chat, we debate, we talk about the weather, we talk about stuff we like, stuff we hate, random stuff and more stuff. But, it is never stuffy. Usually, it is about meeting your fellow Texans and talking about the latest and most interesting stuff in NationStates at the moment. But then again, sometimes NationStates does not even come up. It is wide-open chatting with peeps from around The World both IRL and NS. It is Texans, EuroTexans, WannabeTexans, ex-Texans, and plenty of Friends of Texans. We have it all and all are welcome. Texas Chat, 742 weeks and running! For the math-challenged, that is over 14¾ years! Check it out! Good stuff!

Update on Verner's condition:

Verner’s been hospitalized since the morning of June 6th. He was seated at the computer table when he fell unconscious. The chair he was sitting in overturned and he ended up on the floor. I had told him to stay in bed and I would make him breakfast in bed. However, he got out of bed despite being feverish. He had refused to go to hospital because he was scared of being readmitted to hospital, so I took a leave of absence from work to care for him at home. But that morning I had to get him to hospital: He remained unconscious despite my best efforts to revive him.

My lord was really upset when he woke up and found himself in hospital again but his fever’s broken, he’s awake and he’s feeling better. Unfortunately when he fell and hit his head on the floor, he suffered a concussion and he'll need some time to recover from that.

I really hope and wish this is the final time I have to post an update on my lord's health. So please pray for Verner not to become sick or be injured again this year. Because of his health problems, this year has been the most horrible year for our family so far and we'd like that to change. Thank you in advance for your prayers.

There is currently a new General Assembly Resolution at vote. When expressing your opinion, please note which Resolution it is for. And remember Texans, your individual vote does count!

The new Resolution is called:
"Right To Farm
A resolution to develop industry around the world.

Category: Advancement of Industry Area of Effect: Tort Reform Proposed by: San Carlos Islands

Believing firmly in the right to farm"...

<see the General Assembly for full text and to vote>

[I]Commentary: The General Assembly wants to make some new laws regarding farmers and peeps who do not like farmers. Really? Does this actually happen? Do peeps sue farmers because their chickens are too loud or their corn grows too high?

There have actually been cases in the RL UK, with townies who'd moved out into the countryside suing to have cockerels silenced or because the manure spread on fields smelled too much, instead of considering those possibilities before they chose where to move...
:(

I hope Verner gets well soon and I'll be praying as you requested Leia.

I'm a bit surprised at the top nations for most powerful passports. As to the quiz question, I doubt I'll visit all those locations so I'm pleased where the US is in the rankings.

**** New WA Resolution Notification *****

There is currently a new Security Council Resolution at vote. When expressing your opinion, please note which Resolution it is for. And remember Texans, your individual vote does count!

The new Resolution is called:
"Condemn Durkadurkiranistan II
A resolution to express shock and dismay at a nation or region.

Category: Condemnation Nominee: Durkadurkiranistan II Proposed by: Marilyn Manson Freaks

The Security Council,

Identifying the nation of Durkadurkiranistan II as a vile and ancient menace to the world"...

<see the Security Council for full text and to vote>

Commentary: The Security Council wishes to Condemn another Feeder/Sinker powerhouse. We have never had the pleasure/displeasure of meeting Durkadurkiranistan II or any of their various incarnations, all of whom are being considered in this condemnation. Texas generally stays out of politics in the Feeders and Sinkers, with the exception of our friends in The Rejected Realms. So, we really only have what the author describes to go on. We are fairly "meh" on this one but will trust the author. NewTexas will go on record as FOR on this Resolution. This is only the opinion of NewTexas. We look forward to other Texans' opinions and comments on this Resolution. If good arguments to the contrary are made, we will reconsider our position.

The Texas response was down on the last SC vote -- Condemn Pierconium -- which was passed after gaining 87.7% of the vote. As a reminder, all we are looking for is a simple 10% of Texans to say one way or another. We are a force for change in the WA. Every vote counts!
