The Great Alien War of 1941-1952.
In 1941, we were attacked by unknown tripod-like walkers and weird flying ships. Our best fighter at the time, the P-40C Warhawk, was heavily outclassed and only our heaviest guns could damage the invaders. About 16 million people died during the war. Our armies were unprepared for open combat, and our air force was being destroyed like flies. Thanks to our scientists and international help, we were able to eventually create several vehicles who were superior than the aliens, like the Pzkpfw VI Tiger and the Sherman firefly on the ground, the Me-262 Schwalbe and the P-51 Mustang on the sky, and the NCSS Iowa and the NCSS Yamato on the sea. There are small pockets of radiation left from the broken alien reactors deep within the forests, and several wrecks of both Allokyusan and alien craft scattered on our lands and deep within the seas. We managed to stand our ground against a technically superior enemy, and we expect them to return, but when they eventually come back stronger, we'll be prepared

I suddenly got a pack full of S1 cards. Has this ever happened to anyone? This seems weird.

There's actually a 1% chance of getting an S1 pack for any pack that you open. Their contents are the same as if it were still season 1. You can get some rare cards in those

It used to be a normal authoritarian nation before we arrived on the island and took control. Can you imagine being normal and authoritarian? :P

Welcome, Northern unia tuclicuskemergo, Preussenia, and Jalonondo, to Refugia! I hope each of you enjoys your stay. If it applies to you, please pay attention to the rest of this message.

Refugia aims to be a friendly, laid-back community, which is open to players of all experience levels. Nations who wish to become more active in the region, however, should consider joining the World Assembly (WA). WA nations are able to vote on international law, and receive exclusive benefits within the region, such as the ability to vote in regional elections, get a spot on Refugia's map, and even run for office when elections come up! If you're interested in joining the WA, check out this article, and make sure to endorse our delegate.

If you'd rather just chill with us, that's perfectly fine as well. We have an offsite forum and a discord server, as well as frequent discussions on the regional message board (RMB), which everyone is welcome to participate in!

If you have any additional questions about the region or how NationStates works, feel free to leave them here, on the RMB. If you're interested in joining our offsite forum, look for the link at the top of Refugia's World Factbook Entry (the big text box at the top of our regional page).

Once again, I really hope you enjoy your time here, and look forward to seeing more of you soon!

I had a nap, so less warning than I should have given for this, but there's about an hour and a half left in the Councillor of Culture election. Consider turning in a vote if you have not yet already.

Otherwise I will be back a little after it ends to announce the winner.

Congratulations to Lethodus on becoming the next Councillor of Culture, receiving around 82% of the vote.

Thanks Sylh Alanor for the last term's eco reports, game nights, and general weirdness that we have come to expect of you. It is truly a representation of us all.

Notice:

At this time, candidacy is now open for the Councillor of the Interior position. The Councillor is functionally an advocate for gameside players as well as an RMB mod working to make a welcoming atmosphere. They also have the authority to issue region-wide communication and publish relevant or creative polls to boost engagement or conversation.

If this sounds like something you'd like to do, announce your candidacy now on the RMB or in #ground-floor. Candidacy runs from this very moment until the end of the day on Wednesday, June 23rd.

Congratulations on the win Lethodus! I guess this means I should look into this "game night" business.

All the cool kids announce they are running for elections. I'm not cool so I'll say I'm NOT running for Councillor of the Interior.

Respectfully, I think that you're very cool.

You did great and I hope to see you running for more things in the future <3 don't give up, there's always openings in things.

The game nights are usually coordinated through our Discord server, but one of the things Lethodus stated they would try to do is coordinate that better with gameside-only people, namely those who are only in our RMB and/or forum. Basically what'll happen is they'll post a time and date for a game, and then host that for us (or get someone else to host it if necessary).

Do you want your patriotism stats to be low or high?

Melenavenia wrote:Do you want your patriotism stats to be low or high?

Personally, if I were running a country, I would want it to be a place people would be happy to live in. It depends on what we're describing as patriotism. Is it flag-waving 'my country is the best thing there's ever been and has never done anything wrong' jingoism? I don't want that, I hate it. But while I deeply understand how flawed and awful Canada can be and has been to some of our most vulnerable communities (not to mention being quite bad on environmental concerns), I like it here. I wouldn't want to live anywhere but the island where we are. I like the idea of Canada a lot, and I wish we were more like the image we put into the world. That might be a different kind of patriotism.

I know the game has labelled patriotism as the former type, and I think that's unfortunate. But it also hard equates religiousness as hating lgbt folk and minorities, so I don't put much stock in its interpretation.

Thank you! It was a good election and I'm glad you threw your hat in the ring.

And yep, I'm really hoping to get people from the RMB in on game nights soon. Y'all are lovely and I'd love to crush you all at uno play games with y'all.

Stay tuned then I suppose ^-^

As an American, and the state of American patriotism being twisted into being xenophobic and denying, downplaying, or ignoring all wrongdoings of the nation, it's hard for me imagine anything else in terms of patriotism at this point.

But like you, I'm also happy to live in the United States. There are 195 countries, and many more disputed countries or autonomous territories, and I truly believe that the United States is one of the best places of all of those to live in.

But since patriotism has been decided to be the toxic American style patriotism that perlifiates throughout my country I can say that I'm glad my patriotism is so low.

EXCUSE ME lol, I said that I like the idea of a certain type of patriotism, and I'm sure that's what it's like in Catland.

Well I was referring to how you were saying the game had patriotism as the bad type, rather than Catiania in an RP sense, which is of course wonderful.
