The Commonwealth Times - July 2017

by Commonwealth times editior

Monthly Commonwealth Highlights

From the outside looking in, July may have looked like a month of inactivity. In truth, we did all take a bit of a vacation, but we also got something big done: a new constitution.

Congressional Updates

In accordance with the new constitution, each territory will now have 2 representatives: 1 for the Grand Council and one for the Popular Council. This means that all territories must select another nation to be a representative for them in the popular council.

Preface
Originally we were going to interview The liberty coalition, but we were not able to get into contact with them in time to feature the interview this month. We will feature them next month, and have instead featured New Legland who is a member of the same region (Canterbury).
The Commonwealth Times
When did your region first get involved with the SCUT?
New Legland
My region Canterbury joined SCUT sometime in early June. Apparently, my founder The Liberty Coalition had planned to join SCUT without my knowing (I didn't mind much). I had heard about SCUT before but glossed over it, much likeany of the other defending/raiding organizations in NationStates. I was glad to be joining one of these organizations, however.
The Commonwealth Times
What is your role in your region/organization?
New Legland
I was one of the "founding fathers", you could say, of our region. As such, I was one of the more trusted members of the region. As of right now, The Liberty Coalition has appointed me "Executive Ambassador." I'm just one of the officers who runs and is trusted with the affairs of the regional government.
The Commonwealth Times
What is your opinion on the way the Commonwealth functions?
New Legland
To be honest, I don't know much about the affairs of SCUT. I left the discord a couple of months ago because our region had voted to leave. It wasn't until recently that I learned we were still affiliated with SCUT.
The Commonwealth Times
Have you participated in any declassified major military operations with the SCUT?
New Legland
I have not participated in any such operations. The only military operation in which I have participated was a small detag of the region StarClan that was independent of SCUT.
The Commonwealth Times
How involved are you and what do you plan to do in conjunction with the SCUT?
New Legland
The most involved I was with SCUT was being the General Council Representative for Canterbury. I had voted on a couple of polls on the discord, but that's about it. Right now, I'm glad that my region is hosting the base of operations for SCUT for the second N-Day. As for the future, I'll get more involved in SCUT's government and possibly participate in military operations if I learn more about raiding/defending.

The Commonwealth Times
When did your region first get involved with the SCUT?
The Holy Empire of Loaf
One of our embassy regions was a SCUT member and I was researching interregional organizations. I was added to the SCUT discord as ambassador.
The Commonwealth Times
What is your role in your region/organization?
The Holy Empire of Loaf
I'm the executive Founder in the region The Great Experiment.
The Commonwealth Times
What is your opinion on the way the Commonwealth functions?
The Holy Empire of Loaf
I've elected not to join the Commonwealth, because we aren't extremely into Project Seeker-like roleplay and some of the Commonwealth's policies seem a little far-reaching. Having an executive Founder, it didn't seem like we'd get much in return for having to obey interregional laws and putting the SCUT emblem in the corner of our flag. I'm sure it works great for other regions, though.
The Commonwealth Times
Have you participated in any declassified major military operations with the SCUT?
The Holy Empire of Loaf
No, I was on vacation during the SCUT summer operations.
The Commonwealth Times
How involved are you and what do you plan to do in conjunction with the SCUT?
The Holy Empire of Loaf
I'm having less and less time to play NationStates, but maybe in the future I can sign my region up for some SCUT military operations. Our Constitution doesn't give much decision making power to the Founder, so joining is not up to me.

News Around the Multiverse
This weekend, there shall be a multiversal nuclear warfare simulation (N-Day) in honor of the de-escalation of nuclear arms in an effort to maintain peace. This simulation may or may not involve the use of a new realism technology that SCUT scientists have been developing where our simulation warheads contain a very realistic isotope: Uranium 237 & 2/2. This isotope will allow for our enemies to understand what would happen to them in theory, if they were to engage in a conflict with us, for whatever petty reason they have.

The Barracks

The Commonwealth Defense Forces deploy in the defense of the Commonwealth and its allies to maintain peace and order in the multiverse.

This month, the CDF has liberated StarClan and is currently undergoing preparations for N-Day operations.

Once upon a time, there was a dark force in the Kingdom. This force was an evil spirit that often took on the shape of a Black Sheep. This spirit had made its way into the village, disguised as a human, though it was once caught in the form of a Black Sheep by a Knight, returning from duty. The King banished the spirit with the help of the local Priest. Upon the King's death, his spirit remained and defends the kingdom from The Black Sheep. Now, the King has found the Black Sheep's lair and is on the way to vanquish it once and for all. Go to The Castle.

Yet another SCUT leadership announcement. As usual, no comment from me: just make sure you do this if it applies to you, since it helps the organization quite a bit. Thanks again, guys.

Social Spotlight
This month's featured interviews are with The liberty coalition of Canterbury and New East Byzanthia of The Socialist Alliance of Eurasia

The Commonwealth Times
When did your region first get involved with the SCUT?
The Liberty Coalition
My region first got involved in SCUT in probably the most unexpected way... The newspaper. That's right, the commonwealth times. I started a now defunct newspaper for canterbury, and wanted to help out in something bigger... Later I decided to put us in SCUT... I liked what they did, and i ran a poll on how my region's members felt... the majority was against staying in SCUT. So we left and became an ally of SCUT.
The Commonwealth Times
What is your role in your region/organization?
The Liberty Coalition
As an ally/partner of SCUT, in the words of Morriband, "You are like Japan to our US." As in we like each other a lot and help each other out... but we are not formally in the same faction.
The Commonwealth Times
What is your opinion on the way the Commonwealth functions?
The Liberty Coalition
It is my personal belief that the way the commonwealth and its affiliates are a great system, and does not need change; however, there is always room for improvement.
The Commonwealth Times
Have you participated in any declassified major military operations with the SCUT?
The Liberty Coalition
The detagging missions my region has participated in have never either been classified or in association with SCUT... however, when we detag a raided region, we hand them over to SCUT... so that is a no.
The Commonwealth Times
How involved are you and what do you plan to do in conjunction with the SCUT?
The Liberty Coalition
Our region is heavily involved in the SCUT and plans to aid them in any military operations and detagging missions in the future; along with detagging regions on our own, and handing them over to the SCUT

The Commonwealth Times
When did your region first get involved with the SCUT?
New East Byzanthia
Our region became involved with SCUT in August, although we didn't find out until September. This information, however, is only known by certain SAE and SCUT officers.
The Commonwealth Times
What is your role in your region/organization?
New East Byzanthia
I am the former President of the SAE. I served from February 2016 to September 22 of this year (I lost my position after TSAE merged with the SAE).
The Commonwealth Times
What is your opinion on the way the Commonwealth functions?
New East Byzanthia
I'm hesitant about whatever SCUT does. I'm no expert in defender/invader gameplay, so this whole organization is a bit unfamiliar and disconcerting for me. The fact that SCUT also infiltrated the SAE with their own agents has also left an impression on me. While I understand that SCUT was designed to do good (your master dispatch, government structure, and community all portray a very active and successful community), I cannot dismiss the fact that my own region was infiltrated and manipulated by SCUT agents. That is why I view SCUT with hesitation and trepidation.
The Commonwealth Times
Have you participated in any declassified major military operations with the SCUT?
New East Byzanthia
No, I haven't been a part of any declassified SCUT operations.
The Commonwealth Times
How involved are you and what do you plan to do in conjunction with the SCUT?
New East Byzanthia
I'm not very involved with SCUT at the moment. Because of my feelings towards SCUT, I intend to refrain joining or participating in any of their operations. I do, however, hope to maintain a friendly relationship with them.
The Commonwealth Times
Could you elaborate on what your feelings are towards SCUT and why they came to be?
New East Byzanthia
Coming to the realization that your entire regional government is being infiltrated by a foreign force without your knowing is not easy. Knowing that your region is about to integrate itself with an organization that tried to manipulate you is equally disturbing. To put it simply, I distrust SCUT. The whole scenario surrounding the apparent manipulation of the SAE was largely classified, and while some evidence was provided, a lot of other things were confidential. It's understandable the information should be classified, but I was concerned when we were refused additional information concerning the operation in the SAE. Since we were directly involved in this, wouldn't it be the right of the regional government to know what is going on with their region? SCUT is a force that aims to do good, but classified operations and secret missions gives it a more militaristic aspect. Are they spying on other regions? Are they spying on me, or perhaps my main nation or region? What are they doing that they don't want me to know? I know it sounds like I'm paranoid, but how else am I supposed to feel? I just have a feeling in my gut that I can't get rid of. I wish I could, but I can't. I'm a foreigner to the gameplay sphere of NS. I usually keep to myself and my region. This whole operation catapulted me into a world I was unfamiliar with.
The Commonwealth Times
That's understandable. So, in the aftermath of our operation, you've been briefed on things as they've been deemed to be safe to declassify. So, knowing what you know now, what would you do if the roles were reversed?
New East Byzanthia
Tell them everything. The government, that is. Since it was known that the traitor wasn't part of the regional government, I would've approached the WA Delegate the second we found out. After briefing him on the subject, we would work together (hopefully) to inform the rest of the government.
After that, we would observe the regional population and take notes. Idk what we would do after that (you can't exactly ask several nations if they're a traitor or not; that attempt would be futile)

News Around the Multiverse

After a long period of control in the regional senate of the New Western Atlantic, the Activists (regional liberal party) have lost control to the Constructivists (regional conservative party) by a single vote after the Constructivists formed a coalition with the Lib-Dems (a centrist party) against the Activists. This may cause some changes in the region's foreign policy, though it will not be incredibly significant, due to the relatively small disparity between the Activists and their opposition

In The Holy Reich of Bunicken, there was an attempted coup by the former chancellor. He was, however, arrested by the regional parlaiment and brought before Selven, the Emperor of the Reich, who found him guilty of corruption and malicous intent. As a result of Selven's verdict, the ex-chancellor was dismissed from all offices, his political party was shut down and the region was placed under martial law. As an ally of ours, we send them our best wishes and hope for quick and effective restabilization of the region. Should the need arise, we can lend a helping hand.

The Barracks

The Commonwealth Defense Forces deploy in the defense of the Commonwealth and its allies to maintain peace and order in the multiverse.

Following intelligence reports of a potential connection to hostile forces, the CDF launched a covert operation into The Socialist Alliance of Eurasia. The investigation turned out to be a false flag, though we did gain a new partner/friendly region that will be cooperating with us in the future.

Letters to the Editor

Tribes of israel writes:
Today is an auspicious time for many Jews, why? Because we are in the middle of the Jewish High-Holidays, one third is celebrating a new year, another is asking God to forgive our sins and live another year, and the third, to celebrate re-reading the Torah.
First, we have Rosh-Hashanah, which is Hebrew for 'Head of the Year', at this time, God opens his book and starts writing down decrees, during Rosh-Hashanah and the days from then to Yom-Kippur, we ask God to give us positive decrees and live for the next year, we also try to do 'Taschlich', where Jews go to the nearest river or stream with life in it and pray to 'cast our sins into the river', to start a clean slate basically. This is a time to go and apologise for anyone you did wrong or forgive anyone who wronged you, Linkthis video is a very powerful one about how no matter who, what or how someone wronged you, it is never too late to say sorry and ask for forgiveness and redemption.

I have heard many people make the statement that saying "sorry" doesn't fix anything, and they're right, but it shows that the person who did wrong recognises his mistake and shows remorse for it.

Once it's Yom-Kippur, that's when God is about to close his book of decrees for the New Year, and we have fun, chat on discord, arrange raids, etc. Then we have to pray extra hard, like the angels. They don't eat, drink, have fun, work, chat with friends on discord, arrange raids, etc. They just pray, 24/7. And we try to mimic them on Yom-Kippur, except we take a break in the afternoon. Afterwards, God closes his Book of Decrees and new fates are set for the new year, but since many rabbis became aware of people becoming worried after Yom-Kippur, manly fearing for their life, they try to encourage people to be happy and hopeful that their days aren't numbered.
Next up is Sukkot, in this holiday, all Jews move out of their homes into huts with branch roofs over their heads, which are commonly known as sukkot, this is for two reasons, the first, which is pretty obvious, to remind us that just because we live in warm comfy houses, doesn't mean everyone is as fortunate, the second, not so obvious reason, is a reminder - a nostalgia trip if you will - to remember when the Israelites travelled through the desert in huts not too dissimilar.
Immediately after that is Shemini-Atzeret and Simchata-Torah, to celebrate the re-reading of the Torah, and boy do we have a blast, (it might rain candy if the women's section is above).
And that's all for my Nutshell review for the Jewish High-Holidays, until next time!

Very interesting, UKTI. And you get bonus points for this actually being a full-sized letter, :D ... unlike most of the other entries for this section -_-

The city-state of bastion writes:
All member-states are required to fill out Linkthe census by Oct.7 to avoid late penalties! Also, the official atlas will be updated, based on the responses from the census, so if you want to make sure you're still a recognized nation, fill the census out!
Thanks! :D

Also: as the new HQ city-state for SCUT, all official announcements will be coming from me.

As regular readers would know, we don't really comment on announcements, we just write something like this for filler text. Basically, just do what the leadership says.

Monthly Commonwealth Highlights
This month we've been advancing at a scary pace (yes, the halloween pun was necessary). The pebble that was tossed in the water back at the start of the year is finally starting to ripple large enough to be noticable all around. With our alliances and members growing in power and influence, we're starting to have people line up to join us.

Congressional Updates

The CC (Commonwealth Congress) has recently passed a vote on all of our old alliances prior to this month and which ones we should keep. The votes were on a scale of 0-10, with each representative casting their personal opinion on the basis of our benefit in the weight of the cost to us in each alliance. This is in order to maintain strong bonds and keep the affiliations that the leadership believes will best benefit the Commonwealth.

League of Defenders | 3.83 | Terminate
Federation of Greater Germanic Republics| 6.5 | Sustain (Possible Renegotiation)
The Holy Reich of Bunicken| 8.83 | Sustain
Canterbury | 10.83 | Sustain
Socialist Union of Eurasia | 8.5 | Sustain

In other news, Canterbury has rejoined The Commonwealth. If you don't know the (full) story, here's a TL:DR Version.

Canterbury was once a member of SCUT, but they left because of some domestic strife. This has since boiled over into a full-blown revolution. Now, with the new regime in power, membership in SCUT is once again favored and the Dominion of Canterbury is once more a part of The Commonwealth. Their current representatives are New Legland & Kyssers.

This month's featured interviews are with Langor empire of Union of Confederate Regions and Kyssers of Canterbury

The Commonwealth Times
When did your region first get involved with the SCUT?
Langor Empire
We first met during the virtue enforcement mission in Avlonia.
The Commonwealth Times
What is your role in your region/organization?
Langor Empire
Emperor of the Conventium, the region's supreme leader.
The Commonwealth Times
What is your opinion on the way the Commonwealth functions?
Langor Empire
The SCUT is a curious entity; successful integrational projects are rare, and we are interested in the organization's experience.
The Commonwealth Times
Have you participated in any declassified major military operations with the SCUT?
Langor Empire
No.
The Commonwealth Times
How involved are you and what do you plan to do in conjunction with the SCUT?
Langor Empire
As involved as interregional climate requires.
The Commonwealth Times
What can you tell us about the Yukki Treaty?
Langor Empire
The Treaty of Yukki (officially the Partnership for the Advancement of Virtue) an alliance that, at this time, includes the UCR, Dawn and Kaiserreich; we consider interregional cooperation and coprosperity a necessity even for great powers, and desire to spread the light of civilization to the most distant corners of the NS World.
The Commonwealth Times
How does your region plan to deal with the conflict in Bunicken
Langor Empire
The Conventium would prefer to remain neutral. However, if the circumstances force us to choose sides, we will support Kaiserreich, a Yukki member.

The Commonwealth Times
When did your region first get involved with SCUT?
KYSsers
Our region first got involved with SCUT a while ago. Our founder, The Liberty Coalition (now deleted) got us into SCUT with no warning around June 10th. We left a little while later by vote. Two weeks ago, we joined back.
The Commonwealth Times
What are some highlights of your experience, so far?
KYSsers
We (Canterbury) have not been in SCUT for too long now, but as allies some highlights have been detagging Starclan from the Black Hawks and coordinating with SCUT in N-Day.
The Commonwealth Times
What do you think of the other CC representatives?
KYSsers
I have not been involved with the other CC representatives, but from what I've seen they're all pretty nice and helpful.
The Commonwealth Times
What are some major policy votes that you've made?
KYSsers
So far, I have not made any major policy votes, but look forward to making them in the future.
The Commonwealth Times
Who do you think is the biggest threat to the SCUT?
KYSsers
As we're relatively new to SCUT, I am not sure of what is the biggest threat, but I think some could be Hispanyo and Sovietzkia, as they have had a negative relationship with SCUT and continue to.
The Commonwealth Times
What is your take on the events that recently occured in Canterbury?
KYSsers
Recent events in Canterbury have been both good and bad. After a massive regional government overhaul performed by me, New Legland, Mayo and Other Condiments, and Chundukertopia, The Liberty Coalition was overthrown as founder and we instated a puppet. Our region has become less corrupt and more democratic. We have gotten rid of useless clauses in our constitution made by The Liberty Coalition, and rejoined SCUT. Some bad things, however, are The Liberty Coalition getting deleted, his puppets enraging the mods, and almost causing a delete-on-sight order, Keklandes getting deleted, and relative unrest in Canterbury.

News Around the Multiverse

In The Holy Reich of Bunicken, a conflict sparked early in the month that reached a universal level. The Chancellor of The Reich was declared as an enemy of the state by Kaiserreich and his position jeopardized the relationship between the two powers. There was a divide amongst the allies and citizens of Bunicken alike over whether the chancellor should be impeached or supported. The following is an official statement from the Commonwealth Congress:

Due to the allegiances and record of the current Chancellor of the Holy Reich of Bunicken, it is the belief of the Commonwealth Congress that he should be permitted to maintain his current position. His actions are such which pose no direct detriment to ourselves nor to the future of the relationship between The Reich and The Commonwealth. It is our belief that his continued holding of this position will only better the relationship between the two powers. With that being said, should this cause a war to ignite between Kaiserreich and Bunicken, The Commonwealth shall be forced to declare neutrality, as we are equally aligned with Bunicken as we are with Dawn and the Union of Confederate Regions, both of whom are cosigners of the Yukki Treaty with Kaiserreich. The Emperor would like to note that our ambassador corps is willing to act as a mediation party in this conflict, should the need arise.

The conflict was ended by the support that SCUT put behind the chancellor, which gave him a majority of support amongst citizens and allies of Bunicken, allowing him to maintain his position.

In other news, The SUE (The Socialist Union of Eurasia), a SCUT ally, has lost its historical homeland, The SAE (Socialist Alliance of Eurasia) to a raid. From what is public knowledge, the raid was a combined assault by a group of large militant forces, such as The Black Hawks & Osiris. The Commonwealth Congress has heard the appeals for help from The SUE's ambassador, Byzanthia & are considering all available options.

After years of peaceful cohabitation with the walkers in Commonwealth Special Administrative Zone 13 on Homelands, commonly known as Z0mb13, a cell of terrorists had been working to undo it all. Anarchy is a peaceful leader of his tribes who works for peace between the humanoids of The Commonwealth and the Walkers of Zone 13. However, the aptly-named Chaos - leader of a violent separatist movement in Zone 13, recently weaponized the virus, creating a strain that, unlike the strain found natrually in Zone 13, turns its victims into mindless monsters. It has been dubbed Strain X. With a total of 3 billion Commonwealth Citizens (including the terrorists) permanently infected with Strain X or dead, the total damage to the population of an estimated 4 quadrillion people was 0.075%. However, this was the largest domestic mobilization of the CDF in SCUT history as it required CDFNG teams to operate within each planet, while the greater CDF secured the trade lanes, spaceports, space stations, and planetary atmospheres from hostile invasion - either by terrorists, contaminated travelers, or foreign powers. What follows is a collection of aftermath interviews conducted by a team of investigators from the Commonwealth Congress in order to better understand how the outbreak spread and how the response was carried out.

Letters to the Editor

New Legland writes:
Here is a recap on the events of the Canterbury Civil War:

On September 18, a friend of mine (Mayo and Other Condiments) proposed that we overthrow our founder (The liberty coalition, he has been deleted). Kyssers and I had already thought about this, but had never put anything into motion. To be frank, The Liberty Coalition was corrupt. He would blatantly violate many laws in our poorly written constitution, he would change laws to suit his needs, and he would just abuse his power in general. We started "coordinating" (it wasn't really organized) our operation on Discord. We agreed to have Mayo and Other Condiments create the new Discord server, since The Liberty Coalition was the owner of the other one and have me found the new region with a puppet that would only be used when necessary, so no one would have infinite power. The plan was for us to eject every member of the region just before the update at 1:05 PM. Since we had school during the week, we had to wait until the weekend. However, during the week, I decided to banject Kyssers as a joke since the NS++ banhammer said that I didn't have enough influence to do so. Because of this, I lost most of my influence and we needed to change our plan. We decided to make Kyssers delegate since the WA Delegate doesn't expend as much influence when ejecting and because he had the most influence anyway. However, for reasons unknown to me, on the day we were going to destroy the region, the update time was moved up to 9:49 AM. Kyssers wasn't online at the time, so we had to reschedule for 12:18 AM that day. Since I wasn't willing to stay up that late, I went to sleep while Kyssers ejected everyone at around 11:40 PM. I woke up at around 2:00 AM to my joy to see Canterbury finally destroyed. On September 24, I refounded Canterbury with my puppet The New Canterbury Order Fast forward a few weeks with another refounding, and you arrive at Canterbury as it is today.

This is a fairly good summary of what happened in Canterbury's absense from the Commonwealth. It's a lot better that what we could've written since it's a direct account. Thanks New Legland

Make sure you fill out LinkThe Census. It's a new one that was made this month, so make sure it's up to date. Thanks everyone.
