BREAKING NEWS
Former Prime Minister Shinji Onodera dies

Shinji Onodera, the 9th Prime Minister of Nagakawa, has died at the age of 71, his family said.

Mr Onodera, who served as Prime Minister for one year from 2012 to 2013, was first elected to Parliament in 1996. He served as Shadow Interior Minister under the Yamazaki government, but was elevated to Deputy Prime Minister upon the Liberal Party’s first election victory in 2009, later becoming Prime Minister in 2012. Though popular with the public throughout most of his tenure, his fall from grace came when he became implicated in a bribery scandal involving two of his cousins, for which he had been under investigation ever since the end of his tenure. He was known to have been suffering from kidney failure ever since 2015, and had been regularly undergoing dialysis from then up until his death.

“In his one year in office, Mr Onodera dedicated himself to serving the people of Nagakawa”, said incumbent Prime Minister Hideyoshi Kaburagi in a short address delivered from the Kantei, ordering in the same speech that all flags nationwide be flown at half mast for a week. “We must all remember his contributions and his spirit of public service and leadership.”

“Shinji Onodera served our nation dutifully, not just during his one year in office, but ever since he entered the public service in 1996”, said Akira Konoe, Leader of the Opposition and President of the Liberal Party. “Today, we remember his life of service to the nation and to the people.”

Neither Mr Kaburagi nor Mr Konoe made any mention of the ongoing investigations.

Mr Onodera’s state funeral will be held on the 27th of February, after three days of private ceremonies requested by his family. He is survived by his wife, three daughters, and four grandchildren.

Some smooth whisky. Also flavored water because water with strawberries is pretty good.

Other than water, Nagakawa’s most widely consumed drink is tea, of which the most popular variety is green tea (ocha). 1.46kg of tea is consumed annually per capita in Nagakawa, one of the highest in the world- about two thirds of this tea consumed is green tea, produced locally.

Gobōda and Yashiro Prefectures are known for their tea production; Gobōda Prefecture in particular is known as the Tea Capital, and is home to more than 40 unique blends of green tea, like the famous Ryokuji variety, which is notable for its fragrance and low bitterness.
