State of the Region, November 2024
We're weathering the storm!

Hi, I’m ATG, here to talk generally about the current state of TRTHNBB. I think we all know that October has been an incredibly hectic month for our region – both Syrasia and New United Common-lands resigned, a Snap Election for Deputy Prime Minister was held, we’ve hosted a ton of events, recorded multiple Yodcast episodes, and worked on a bunch of treaties. More details will come on many of these events later, but I want to speak more broadly about NBB.

First, I’d like to say that I’m quite impressed with how our region has picked itself up from the chaotic, uncertain period directly following NUCL’s resignation in particular. NUCL was a bulwark of the regional government, and I wasn’t entirely sure how smooth our transition would be, but having Faralried and Venesia Grande by my side led to a quick recovery. As our new Minister of Foreign Affairs, Faralried has been doing great work, opening consulates and negotiating treaties left and right while also advising me on critical regional decisions. Venesia Grande has been another massive help, picking up the slack and working on key regional announcements.

Our events have also maintained a relatively high level of activity, and our domestic affairs are encouraging, with the recent Government Approval poll evidence enough that our government isn’t faltering, even after a massive shakeup. Gine Caruttiva has also been performing his duties as DPM excellently, helping me carry out the truly staggering amount of responsibilities of the Prime Minister. Western Arba Fir has even returned, and immediately began pitching in, helping to guide our government in an active direction. Finally, the inclusion of Rogue River on our Culture Committee has been incredible - he’s got great ideas and, like everyone here, he’s such a pleasure to work with. Having new people who are eager to join the government is always so encouraging, and as a result of their efforts, even our long-awaited regional roleplay is finally heading in the right direction.

I’d also like to highlight the NBBC, which is to say, The Social Reformer and the Yodcast. I’ve had a great time being the unofficial head of our region’s media programs, and I’m happy to announce that our recent media expansion has been a big success. The Social Reformer has expanded, including interviews with notable people, and those sections add quite a bit of interesting content to the newspaper. They also help highlight individual contributions, which is crucial to building a region, as people often don’t keep working if they aren’t recognized for their effort. Further, the Yodcast has exceeded my expectations by far. I didn’t think the project would last forever, as it was heavily experimental in the beginning, but I feel as if we’ve truly come into our own during this last month. At time of writing, we’ve published four episodes, and I’m genuinely proud of each of them. Our live viewership is also impressive; generally, we can expect more than 10 people to be present in the audience for the entirety of the podcast’s recording. As a whole, our media efforts are an exciting new direction for the region, and they’ve thoroughly proven their worth.

To conclude, I want to say thank you to everyone who’s contributed to our region during this past month. Whether you pitched in by directly working in our government or simply kept chatting on our RMB and creating a positive, eccentric environment, like (to name just a few) The Holy Cult of Julia, Brocklandia, and Bean territory, you’re all such incredible parts of this region. I’m very proud of how far NBB has come, and I’m excited to keep leading it into the future. With your help, I know we can continue to make our region the friendliest out there!

Resignations and our Recovery - Discussing Burnout
Mental health is crucial. If you need a break, take one.

It’s certainly no secret that running a NationStates government is not an easy task. Active regions have massive responsibilities – government officials have to maintain relations with dozens of regions, produce content like The Social Reformer, plan consistent cultural events, maintain the region’s dispatches, provide a functioning roleplay, and engage in the region’s legislature. That certainly isn’t an exhaustive list of duties, either. As a result, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that burnout is a key issue affecting NationStates leadership.

During this term, that sense of burnout has been one of the key factors impacting our region. We faced three separate resignations, and even prior to that, our former Head of Roleplay, Socialistic Britain, decided to step down from the regional government. Quite simply, none of us live only for NationStates – we’ve all got complex, busy lives outside of this website. New United Common-lands had spearheaded the region’s revival and remained as a steward of the region for years. Syrasia had dedicated countless hours to fully rebuilding our region’s roleplay from the ground up. Western Arba Fir spent so much time crafting new regional initiatives and welcoming new members. It only makes sense that people with so many responsibilities would naturally be forced to step back at a certain point.

However, as is probably evident, losing much of our regional leadership is not a problem with an easy solution. Remaining members of the government had to step in and carry out the duties fulfilled by these individuals, and as a result, burnout is actively setting in among those who remained. So how can we address this burnout?

The key, in the opinion of many regional officials, is to expand the regional government to include newer members. Enthusiasm begins to naturally fade away during lengthy terms in office, and regional officers can’t be expected to have enough time and energy to manage the region forever. New members bring with them new ideas and inject new activity into leadership, as older members of the region are forced to consider these new ideas and possibly reshape their understanding of governance. (For further reading, this topic is investigated in depth in an excellent dispatch written by Emiline of the Augustin Alliance, UCRs and Investing in the Common Nation.)

It is not as simple as waiting for new residents to volunteer for Cabinet positions, though. Nurturing newer talent requires older members of the region to be willing to step aside, and it also necessitates the creation of newer positions with smaller responsibilities in order to avoid overwhelming prospective officials. The ‘Old Guard’ of a region often has a working system and a specific delineation of tasks – each official generally knows what assignments are right for them, and there generally exists an easy shorthand. However, this efficiency comes at the cost of longevity. In order to maintain a region in the long term, the ‘Old Guard’ must be willing to forfeit the roles they enjoy and serve as mentors to newer generations of leadership.

In conclusion, our wave of resignations was certainly stunning, but it was not wholly surprising. In order to adapt, and ensure that our region does not once again slip into a period of inactivity when each current government member succumbs to burnout or takes on too many offsite responsibilities to fully engage on NationStates, we must be proactive. It is the responsibility of the regional government to identify, contact, and encourage new leadership at every turn. In doing so, we can create a cycle of officials through which our region can survive the loss of members of the Old Guard without having to rely on a few individuals to ‘fill in.’ Above all, we must recognize the extent to which NationStates can cause burnout, and recognize that no one can lead a region forever.

Approval Results Overview/Highlights
Results are "quite surprising", says Minister of Domestic Affairs Ardeyn

Recently, our government approval poll was set up once again, and we had a decent turnout of 24 people in total answering the poll, which gave us a good idea about how people feel about this term.

In this article, I'll overview just a select few percentages that I deem most interesting, but if you'd like to see them all, you can do so here.

First of all, our new government members Faralried and Sidervidaii received respectable first results in this poll with Faralried receiving a score of 7.96 and Sidervidaii coming out with a 7.13.

These are both pretty great first scores and in the coming months, I suspect these scores will gradually climb higher as their faces become more familiar with the community and as they prove themselves deserving of their positions.

Next, I'd like to highlight the results of New United Common-lands and America the Greater, as their results surprised me quite a bit. Both of them have been with the region and in the government for an incredibly long amount of time, with NUCL being largely responsible for setting many of our region's foundations and ATG being a co-founder, here in the region since its very beginning and before. However, both had decreases in their scores for this poll.

Though their scores are still incredibly high, and the amount they decreased in scores isn't too major, I find it quite surprising how they dipped at all, considering the amount of work they have been putting into the region.

First off, New United Common-lands score stands at 8.71, a decrease of -0.03 since the last approval poll. Though an incredibly small decrease, I am surprised nonetheless. This stands as his final score for the foreseeable future as he has retired from the regional government.

And lastly, we have America the Greater, who received the largest decrease, going from 9.30 to 8.83, a decrease of -0.47. My personal theory is a simple one, I suspect the reasoning behind this decrease has something to do with the prominent position ATG is now in, as being the Prime Minister means a much higher degree of expectations, whereas when he was Minister of Domestic Affairs he was seen as going far beyond duty and expectation.

If you have your own ideas about the cause of any changes behind these scores, feel free to let it be known on our RMB! And remember to check out the full results in the dispatch linked.

Deputy Prime Ministerial Address
A New Voice for the region?

I was elected quite some time ago as the new Deputy Prime Minister of The Region That Has No Big Banks, promising to focus on direct democracy and citizen engagement. Well known for pushing reforms, I plan to introduce a new Cabinet Policy to give the Deputy Prime Minister more say in the creation of a government, ensuring that every elected position has a voice in the process.

I also aim to revitalize The Social Reformer, the region’s newspaper, by recruiting new voices and ensuring Ministers give monthly reports. As I said before, "Our region deserves a government that listens to its people, ", thus pledging to make the regional government more democratic, transparent, and welcoming.

Roleplay Progress Report
"One last step", promises ATG

I’m excited to bring you a brief report on the progress of our ongoing roleplay reform. For context, we convened the RP Reform committee months ago, and it saw little progress for a long time. However, with the help of Syrasia, we were able to construct an entirely new scenario, including a new rulebook and some impressive dispatches which will serve as the hub for roleplay information.

Now that Syrasia has resigned, though, we have been left with an incomplete map. This map is the final requirement for us to restart our roleplay - when it is finished, roleplay is ready to commence. Thankfully, Gine Caruttiva has recently volunteered to complete the map, finalizing the plots and adding basic biomes and resources. As a result, I feel confident in announcing that our regional roleplay will be fully ready to commence by the end of the month.

The scenario is public, and we encourage citizens who are interested in our roleplay to begin crafting their lore now. Please submit it to roleplay administrators in order to ensure that your nation’s lore will be a good fit for our scenario and will not break any of our rules. In the meantime, have a lovely November, and I’ll get back to you soon with the official announcement of a new beginning for our roleplay.

Cultural Events Overview
"Impressive turnout" for this month's events

This October was a busy month for our regional events, but I think we’ve learned our lesson with regards to event fatigue. We decided to slow our events down and space them much farther apart, and as a result, we’ve seen a serious uptick in attendance. On October 5th, we hosted regional Games Night, including Skribbl.io and King of the Castle. This event had an impressive turnout of roughly 15 people at its peak, which is quite remarkable compared to the lower levels of interest we’d been facing during Summerfest. Concurrently, NUCL decided to begin hosting watch parties for Doctor Who episodes. These watch parties did not see much turnout, but the idea is novel and I expect to see more TV and movie viewing events in the future, as they are quite easy to administer.

As October went on, we hosted a joint movie night with Blue Ridge, viewing Over the Garden Wall. That event saw truly massive turnout, which only serves to reinforce our strong ties of friendship with Blue Ridge!

As October drew to a close, the The Washington Federation and the Ministry of Culture announced TRTHNBB’s Spooky Week, a series of events including a Spooky Story competition, an as-of-yet unsolved Murder Mystery, a Nightmare Before Christmas movie night, a Horde Chess event, and two consecutive Games Nights! October may be over, but the Halloween celebrations certainly aren’t. I hope to see you at our next Games Nights, and in all of our November events!

Condemn New Ordered?
The controversial proposal "draws attention to the issues facing smaller regions", claims ATG

This October, a proposal to condemn New Ordered was submitted to the Security Council. Collectively, after receiving Linkmany identical telegrams asking for support, delegates came together to ask: “Who?”

New Ordered is the founder of the region of Bangladeshi Puppet, but is currently located in The East Pacific. The majority of their posts within Bangladeshi Puppet consist of comments on different YouTube channels, but within recent times, they’ve become more belligerent, suppressing a significant number of seemingly innocuous messages on their RMB. Facing complaints about their behavior, they claimed “I hate when people lick my feet.”

It appears that New Ordered ran afoul of Drakonheimist, a compact of small regions with ties to the region of China. This pact worked together on the proposal to condemn New Ordered for his actions, drafting it openly on many of their associated RMBs. The proposal took many attempts, as the author, Mist Covered Mountains, repeatedly broke the SC rule against mentioning ‘NationStates’ itself within a proposal. I actually sent them a telegram personally and let them know why their proposal was failing, and they made the necessary adjustments, submitting it to the WA. I mistakenly sent this telegram to New Ordered himself at first, leading to Linkthis exchange.

So, who is Mist Covered Mountains? Mist Covered Mountains is an alt account of Mystic Shores, with some evidence presented here: LinkImage 1, LinkImage 2. If that name rings a bell, it’s probably because you’ve heard about the Roses Without Thorns drama. Mystic Shores is famously the author of multiple failed proposals to liberate and injunct that region, and also, most notably, coined the term “Gay Furry Pacific Clique.” It would appear, therefore, that Mystic Shores’ draft of this proposal was simply an attempt to badge-hunt, as they’ve since engaged in a great deal of seemingly unrelated WA activity.

However, I feel it is unfair to solely attribute Condemn New Ordered to an unsuccessful attempt at badge-hunting. Drakonheimist, the pact of small regions heavily involved in the drafting process, appears to be somewhat active and certainly was engaged in a great deal of diplomacy when the proposal was submitted. In fact, there was an open ‘war’ between Bangladeshi Puppet and the Drakonheimist regions at the time, leading to the short-lived seizure of Drakonheimist itself by nations supportive of New Ordered, and the raising of this flag over the region. Now that New Ordered has vacated Bangladeshi Puppet, the region has been seized by forces aligned to Drakonheimist.

Why go to all this effort, now that the proposal has been thoroughly rejected by the Security Council, both on- and off-site? It seems that, though the efforts of Mystic Shores may certainly have been intended to badge-hunt, there truly was passion for the idea of condemning New Ordered among a not-insignificant number of nations. Representatives of Drakonheimist consistently fought for the Condemnation, providing ‘evidence’ which generally consisted of screenshots of rude RMB posts by New Ordered.

Further, Mystic Shores themselves appears to follow a somewhat consistent set of ideals - they have frequently posted about engaging in defending, long before the RWOT situation emerged, and it appears that their frustrations with the DND may have come about as a result of a genuine feeling that all regions deserve to be defended. It is difficult to sympathize with Mystic Shores, given their frequent offensive comments on the forums, and I certainly do not recommend viewing Mystic Shores as any kind of noble defender. However, I do feel it is unfair to discount the idea that, perhaps, Condemn New Ordered was the result of a genuine effort to punish someone for treating others poorly.

In many ways, though this proposal has been severely maligned, it seems to have been at least partially legitimate. Even if Mystic Shores was simply taking advantage of a small group of regions in order to publicize their issue in the Security Council, those small regions still matter – they sought to address an interregional issue in the World Assembly. Many of us are quite familiar with the workings of the WA, and understand that proposals must be sufficiently high-stakes in order to merit any kind of approval. However, a proposal like Condemn New Ordered sometimes makes me wonder – is the WA being unfair to the plight of smaller regions? Looking back upon the very first SC proposals, most of them were quite low-stakes and largely based on the personality of the target. The current standard system for submitting a proposal requires a great deal of research and includes weeks of vetting on the forum to ensure top quality and sufficient relevance to the wider world of NationStates. Condemn New Ordered was certainly not an extensive, top-quality proposal, but it mattered to quite a few people. Should we really dismiss proposals like these out-of-hand?

Regardless of the quality of Condemn New Ordered, it certainly draws attention to the issues facing smaller regions. Drakonheimist was, at least at one point, an active community, serving as the hub for many different regions and facilitating dialogue and cooperation. They certainly don’t have the diplomatic weight of a feeder, or even a mid-size UCR, but they do have active members and interests of their own. If the World Assembly doesn’t represent those interests, then who will?

Foreign Affairs Updates and Embassy/Consulate Highlights
"Treaties, Treaties and more Treaties!" announces Minister of Foreign Affairs Faralried

Recently NBB has signed not 1, not 2 but 3 treaties! And since I’m lazy my statement last week was so good on our discord and RMB, I have copied and pasted it here as well. Enjoy.

So to speak more generally, I am super excited about all 3 treaties and where our relationship goes with each region. All 3 regions have strongly culturally intertwined with ours and cementing a lasting relationship felt like a natural step, and we are truly blessed to have so many friends in other regions. Wanna shout out New United Common-lands who was still MOFA for the TEP and Forest treaty negotiations and helped establish relations with Blue Ridge and whose work helped allow that relationship to blossom. You did such an amazing job to the point I get to look good and ride your coattails a bit :p

Back to the treaties, I wanna touch on each one more generally.

Forest

I actually wasn't around for these negotiations but having been around Forest for a long time now through JEFF. That community is always a blast even if a bit chaotic at times much like I think we are as well. I'm glad to call them friends and I am really happy to be around for this new chapter of our relationship.

Full Treaty - page=dispatch/id=2537424

As reported by Faralried, Minister of Foreign Affairs.

The East Pacific

Our relationship really started with N day where JEFF and ANAL have worked really closely to until recently a vastly successful relationship with this most recent N day being the first time our relationship failed to produce an outcome that could be categorized as a victory for our team. Since that foundation the cultural cooperation has been great and the members who have moved here because of that relationship have been equally amazing. Future is bright!

Full Treaty - page=dispatch/id=2566769

As reported by Faralried, Minister of Foreign Affairs.

Blue Ridge

Finally the treaty I was MOFA for start to finish for, a truly grueling *checks notes* 4 total days from Adkissa DMing me with a full polished treaty to its announcement. The like 8-10 total messages I sent were truly hard work and I don't know if I'll fully recover.

Lowkey tho if any other MOFAs are lurking, come to me with a full treaty like Adkissa did and I'll love you forever lmao. I can't write to save my life.

As for the treaty itself the joint event every 6 months or so should be a blast. Already looking forward to our next one!

Full Treaty - page=dispatch/id=2568621

As reported by Faralried, Minister of Foreign Affairs.

NBB Adopts Consulate System

Recently we here in TRTHNBB have adopted the consulate system for our foreign affairs! We’ve grown a lot recently and believe establishing consulates prior to an embassy to be the best move forward to help us determine the best fits for our long term partners. While we did have some consulates before hand since the adoption of having consulates as an official policy, we have opened many consulates especially over the last month or so with the following regions-

The East Pacific Delegate elections

Recently our friends in The East Pacific have had a Delegate election. Our congrats go out to American-Cascadia for winning the delegacy with 21 out of 25 votes! Additionally congrats to Merlovich for their successful term as delegate!

The North Pacific Happenings Report, contributed by America the Greater

We've recently established a consulate with The North Pacific, and I'm pleased to be our representative to their region. The North Pacific quite recently conducted its Delegate elections, with Picairn defeating the assumed front-runner candidate. Picairn pledged to "address the activity and manpower issues plaguing our government and army, and implement necessary reforms to make TNP a stronger and better region."

The North Pacific has also recently released its newest round of WADP awards for active WA members in the region, increased the frequency of its raiding operations, and announced the beginning of its Judicial Election period.

Interviews
Hear from New United Common-lands, Rogue River, and Arstotskiano Helix-Caelorum!

New United Common-lands

Like many of the new wave of NSers I joined after watching Drew’s Durnils video and stuck around ever since. Soon after making my nation, by coincidence Yodle’s telegrams was one of the first recruitment telegrams I saw, and this was the first region I joined after being in a feeder. I got a good vibe from the recruitment telegram, albeit I really had no idea what I had let myself in for. From the early days here, I felt like I could express my genuine personality, ironically under the facade of a fictional nation, and that’s what has made this region so appealing to me for so long. Basically I’ve never considered leaving, because the regional atmosphere is comfy and there is a level of stability here which you don’t find in all other UCRs, thanks to Yodle’s long term dedication!
ADR is lovely and eccentric. I feel like this question slightly conflates two periods because there was a long reign of the Provisional Governor, ADR at peak activity was providing a level of activity more than Yodle at the time. He led the revamp of political parties in the region and kickstarted the map RP. Yodle saw potential in him to be one of the leading figures in the region, and hence he was made Provisional Governor, in October 2020, it took until December 2021 for me to even enter the political arena. During the period prior, I dabbled in answering issues, challenge mode, chatting on the RMB, and making my own political party. Throwback to the Socialist Automation Party. I think this certainly enabled my political awakening, as I distinctly remember telegramming members of the region trying to get my political party membership up.

Anyways, I stood for election in December 2021 and was subsequently appointed (or technically elected) as WA delegate in March 2022. Did I really work with ADR in this time? No, not really I just focused on doing my own thing. ADR ran for PM because it made sense after his long reign as Provisional Governor, but he didn’t really have as much motivation for the game at that point. We didn’t really interact much for whatever was said on the RMB.

As DPM I focused on re-establishing connections with our embassies, in the days prior to me realising discord is a good tool for NS engagement... I telegrammed all our embassies notifying them we had only recently held elections, and later I also advertised our Eighth Edition of The Social Reformer quite heavily over telegrams and RMB. I also worked with BrendenE to bring back NBB’s Defender presence. We tried to make a liberation team and many of us joined Libcord for the first time.[/font]

I believe timing wise this was one of my first acts as PM, we were approached by a now former member of the InterLeft. This aligned very well with my PM platform and by chance we (me and Ardeyn) managed to tick off a commitment of “Forging New Inter Regional Alliances”. Why did we join, because we wanted to get closer with some other regions with similar regional values, ultimately it allowed us (the new generation of leadership) to dip our toe into NS Foreign Affairs, which has certainly served us all well. The InterLeft has served us well seeing strong connections with DSA and Wintercrest, formerly with Aurora too.
Mostly the same reason I wanted to hold elections, because I didn’t like seeing an inactive government, and ADR (as PM) was pretty inactive by that point. I would have run for PM originally, but was also worried that I wasn’t well known enough to win the election, so DPM in Dec 21 /Jan 22 was a safer bet. As I’ve said privately on many occasions I had never wanted to be the leading figure in the region, I’d always wanted to be the person in the background getting things done, but it was clear back then nobody was really that interested in taking forward the mantle of PM, (certainly nobody who I had confidence would deliver the level of activity I could). So I did put my hand in the ring, but as DPM I pretty much acted as the PM in the void of leadership.
I am probably going to merge terms a bit because my memory seems to mix up timings a bit (so you may need to factcheck). The single biggest thing which really changed the community was hosting Discord events. In April 2023, I hosted our first games night and from that moment forward I really felt more of a community spirit, as I was able to speak and make friends with members of the community who I’d mostly spoken to on the RMB. But not only that we met so many foreigners in those games night, it was more well attended by our embassy regions. I met Faralried at one of our first games night, Student Loan Debt attended quite a few, and other foreign ambassadors. The game nights, followed up by Summerfest in 2023 really put the region on the map as a Cultural Hub.
I loved bringing back the social reformer. I do think that was a big achievement, but also I wish I could have published more editions. I focused on trying to maintain the high standard of editions rather than rush something together, which I know if I’d set a monthly goal I wouldn’t have been able to meet. I really like the focus I put on organising for regional GP events, I liked my Nday/Zday write ups especially.

My main priority as PM was planning, planning and planning. One of my first things when entering government was making a spreadsheet dotting out the key events for the year, lining up census dates, anniversary dates, when we would release TSR and provide regular comms updates. Alongside events like Nday/Zday and elections etc. Planning is important to give a realistic idea of what you can achieve as a government, and not to overburden yourself, day-to-day management will always exist especially in departments such as Foreign Affairs. But for Domestic Affairs and Cultural Affairs planning our TSR, Census, Endorsement initiatives, games nights, zday/nday and anniversary dates etc. is a lot easier.

But I generally think maintaining an active government was key to the success, as most things delivered in my time were done by other people, because I gave them ‘permission’ to be creative (I’ll explain in the next question).

This arguably is the most important thing for a Prime Minister, is picking their team which is able to deliver on the objectives of the regional government. The PM is there for leadership, encouragement and to help when ministers are inactive or away but realistically the government cannot be a one nation affair because that will inevitably lead to burnout. Many of the successful things weren’t even delivered by me, especially in the realm of cultural affairs. Shoutout to Wash Fed, introducing the Bankless Football League, and Olympic RP events, both of which started when I was PM (maybe BFL under DPM), whilst clearly I will not take credit for actually delivering them because I didn’t but my role as PM was to create an active environment where I could encourage my ministers to deliver stuff which would benefit the region. Shout out to Socialistic Brit. for the countless amount of artwork that improved the quality of TSR articles, they also were Cartographers for a crazy long time and managed all things relating to the management of map RP. Ardeyn for bringing back parliament, revamping our WFE, and developing our foreign policy. Vlaskal, as an active MoD, managing our border and helping manage our RMB, came up with the idea of the Code of Conduct and the 3 strike rule.

Without mentioning every minister ever, I think the main achievement was trying to recruit new members into the regional government. Being persistently annoying and proactive is my tried and tested method for getting many people into government (or recruiting members from other regions to join our government..lol). Our region struggled as we never really recruited members who were that interested in running for regional government.

I feel I did dominate regional politics, it comes with the territory of being the main ‘go to’ person in the region, you know the politics inside out, and your approval makes or breaks proposals. Being the biggest stakeholder in NBB is massively fun and being able to manage a region how you see fit is great, especially in my time because we had no constitution and I could set up the regional government basically exactly how I wanted. But I always knew as a region we would need innovation as with the same person at the helm for too long it can go stale. Whilst realistically I could have continued for longer as PM, I am glad I decided to take a step back.
I feel like the process of drafting the constitution was really good, as we worked methodically section through section. I know there were potentially a few loopholes and oversights but it gave us plenty of content for our regional parliament. You (ATG) really did a great job collating and drafting the document + spearheading getting the constitution passed.
All Prime Ministers will run things slightly differently and how they see fit, it was always going to be difficult coming off the back of me being PM for 3 terms. I think the laissez faire Wash Fed leadership style (just letting the Ministers crack on) was the real shift from my ‘direct’ leadership, where I would be involved in lots of the encouragement and decision making across the government portfolio whereas Wash Fed wasn’t. We achieved a lot across the term because of extremely active ministers, I think a more direct leadership style could have helped, but at the same time when you have extremely active ministers it’s good to let them flourish.
It felt great to be formally recognised, for the sheer volume of time I dedicated to the region across the 2 ish years being either DPM/PM.
It felt like a natural fit after serving as the region's highest official in FA forums, I was the known person here and being able to leverage that to establish embassies and Foreign relations was very useful. I also was worried that nobody else would be able to excel in that forum as well as I could, and expanding NBB’s image in the Foreign realm was incredibly important to me - especially on the back of the good image we had already started to create whilst I was PM and hosting huge games nights.
Establishing a new foreign policy and ethos of using embassies to develop actual good community relations between both NBB and the respective embassy. Also, getting embassies with some of the big GCR’s and other UCR regions. Playing a leading role in JEFF and establishing an effective ambassador programme. I also really enjoyed organising the Bankless Forest Chess Tournament with 10 regions participating.
Similar to Wash Fed in a way, but I felt Mjau divided opinion (was a more divisive character), I was disappointed by his platform to stand for election - it was very disingenuous in my opinion due to my opposition to the 'elitism’ characterisation (something which always felt directed at me). Thereafter elitism became an election buzzword. Ironically, I’d argue my premiership as PM was one characterised by constantly promoting newer active members into government on a merit basis, the least elitist. That’s beside the point though, Mjau as a political communicator had the potential to be one of the best, his time as DPM was great, when he got to PM he became quite inactive - so that was massively unfortunate considering he had such an ambitious plan for government. I wish we could have given Ardeyn a chance as PM, hence why I was one of his main supporters.
I’ve always aligned with the ‘Defender’ stance, I think those that rip apart communities by raiding them is a horrible practice on NS (unless the region is bigoted). Defender-ism and being MoFA linked quite well, and I was happy to really bring R/D back to relevance in NBB.
I’ve definitely spoke at length about this issue, and I would refer back to the lengthy interview we had after leaving the InterLeft. Ultimately, the InterLeft didn’t deliver on it’s objectives and has distanced itself into NS irrelevance, that maybe sound like strong words but I honestly mean it in a factual way. As stated earlier I have a lot of respect for the regions in the InterLeft, I just think the organisation has been flawed from the start due to it sounding identical to the NSLeft, and due to some previous problematic members of Aurora giving the whole InterLeft a bad name.
Generally just not rushing into Foreign Affairs decisions. I think we have to recognise mistakes will always be made whilst your in government, and the sooner you recognise them the better in my opinion. I’ve definitely made my fair share of mistakes, but like to think I always try to hold my hands up and change tact. Infact, that’s what we did as we delayed the InterLeft referendum and held extensive conversations with InterLeft regions. I completely stand by closing embassies with Aurora due to them tactically withholding their opinions and then issuing another statement after the referendum was over, it was calculated and not something that was well handled by them. Albeit, I think that is water under the bridge now, and we could probably seek some better amends with that community.
Two reasons, mainly because of my personal life becoming increasingly busy with responsibilities, but higher and higher demands of government officials. Foreign Affairs is particularly time consuming when people reach out to you and expect responses very quickly. We’ve been victims of our own success in that regard as more and more regions want relations with us, this has been something always in conflict with a Foreign Policy which values close relations with a select few regions. I do think we have to be careful about creating too many embassies as that will put more pressure on our Foreign Affairs department and ambassadors.
Plan things better, I’d recommend a year plan with as many activities on that plan with dates, that way people can forward plan their lives to achieve the goals they set out. It will also enable us to be more strategic and effective in our communication with region members.
I’d urge people to be proactive, if they see something in the region which they believe they can improve then, just improve it. Nobody is stopping you creating a new organisation about trading cards, or creating a newspaper. If there is something stopping you let me know… I do want to break down the barriers for our new generation of leadership.

We are now one of the most influential UCR’s in the whole of NS in my opinion, and that is because of the proactivity and creativity of successive regional governments delivering, a regular and expanded TSR, RP like the BFL, an actual Podcast, games nights, summerfest, an incredibly active parliament, the BLF and so much more.

Being proactive to improve NBB will have a lasting positive effect on the community, and potentially springboard yourself to become one of the most influential members of the region.

Rogue River
I struggle to define my own positive traits, but what I get told is I am inquisitive, a good public speaker, and generally great at coming up with ideas. What people say I could work on is being more tactful, less idealistic, and maybe less brutally honest sometimes. I do pride myself on my ability to learn from my mistakes. I've never left the States, but I have visited family across the country. It is my dream to enter Public Service in some capacity, after joining my city government (partially to atone for my mistakes in Gravy), I realized I love how much I love giving ideas to our officials. My views I tend to lean left on most issues socially, and tilt economically, I tend to define myself as a Social Democrat, though my views shift a lot when it comes to economic system. I was raised by a generally conservative bunch, except my parents, who pushed me to define myself on my own.
I've always been a little bit hands off, more handing my ideas off for others to execute, though early on I was definitely very unsure. I founded regions like Gravy with New Anorlondo, and RIBBON EELS to generally get away from the drama surrounding other problematic regions I was part of. I'd describe my times in charge as directionless but prosperous, I think one thing I would have done differently is put a theme on Gravy, like how NBB loves Bernie Sanders and all! I sometimes let pride get in my way, but I was just a dumb student who had trouble trusting others with something I really wanted to succeed, overtime I believe I have overcome such shortcomings.
I'll be 100% honest, my first thoughts were horror, shock, anger, wanting to lash out, and generally just trying to figure out how to get back at the situation, the people who I feel wronged me. As the time passed though, I deeply grew to hate my actions even now, Anor and Ribbon maintained a degree of anger that moved into indifference over time, though I was just immensely disappointed in myself, I remember spending hours scrolling back on chatlogs, reading the evidence doc, trying to see every single thing I could have done differently. Honestly my role in that situation plays very deeply into my own sorta self hatred in a way, but I try to atone the best I can.
If I could have turned back the clock, I wouldn't have invited Anor or Ribbon.
Regarding the GUC, I actually don't know what I was going for, Gravy collapsed because Anor and Ribbon left, and I didn't know really what to do. I just formed the GUC and dragged who was left along because we just wanted to build our own region, but honestly, I wasn't very sure of it. I started feeling like I should just apply myself in an established region and maybe I can help said region bring more positivity to NS. Soon I was struck with the death of a couple family members, and well my motivation for everything was completely killed. I tried putting on a positive "we'll get it done!" sorta face, but inside I was very directionless, wondering why I was committing to a website of all things. I wish I could give a better answer on my image, but nothing comes to mind.
I'm gonna be honest, I don't think people were motivated enough. The only person who was received a lot of flak due to their handling of certain issues, a lot of us were upset when they deleted the Gravy Discord server, which we intended to keep for us to look back on and reflect. People were mostly living their lives, and getting caught up in more drama probably killed our motivation, I do commend former NS player So Pep, my Secretary of Foreign Affairs, for exposing some problematic regions. He's largely moved on, but he keeps me sane.

We felt particularly betrayed when Alcris was revealed to be...well Alcris.

Regarding the move to NBB, I was looking for a comforting place to be in, NBB struck me as that comfort, and I had hoped by applying myself in a place I enjoy, I'd find a way to look past my shortcomings one day. Now I know I'll get knives pointed at me, but I don't share the whole Bernie Sanders thing, I really don't have a favorite politcal figure, most actions they make make me uncomfortable, I am a big fan of people in Joe Biden's cabinet, names like Pete Buttigeg come to mind, or Harris herself. I will say my mom did take me to a Bernie Sanders rally back in 2016!
That was honestly a completely impulse decision, I wanted to do it, but then I realized that I probably wasnt cut out for the job yet. I've always been one to take lead on most things, drafting plans, and all that. I'm glad Gine won, and above all I really hope they get the RP running!
Im gonna be 100% honest, I just care about getting the RP set up. Thats literally all I want. Though I will say I am passionate about helping out elsewhere! I've always had a soft spot for RP, I'd do it in Elementary school, with my friends, I just love telling stories as they just feel more natural than reading or watching them!
I honestly hope I can clean up my act and run for Prime Minister one day, I have grand ideas I'm storing in my head, ideas that I really wanna see implemented, because I think it could work for a region as big as this. For now I want to mostly work on the RP, and generally make friends! I foresee myself doing serious running in maybe a year.
I learned many things.

Be assertive, don't hesitate to act if you see something wrong, I wish I could tell that to myself when I led Gravy

Be careful on what you say. Being a leader, one of my biggest focuses on improvement is how I joke and talk. Its become a lot less dark and just more snarky. I thinks its also contributed by the fact that I'm gonna be shipped off to college soon.

I was once told "don't hold on so tight, let some control slip" by one of my ministers in response to an electoral crisis in Gravy, so I learned that its okay to let others take lead sometimes! I think I probably relate to Anxiety from Inside Out 2 a lot come to think of it.

Arstotskiano Helix-Caelorum
Hi! Thank you very much for interviewing me, its a pleasure :)

I'm Arsto, a raider and the Prime Minister of Avaldonia. These days I mainly manage Avaldonia with my cabinet, Jay and the Privy Council but I still try to raid when I can in my capacity as an Assassin of the Brotherhood of Malice.

To be honest, I just like the people. I find all the drama stupid lol, I just like to sit on the sidelines of it and watch the entertainment. I'm here for :3 and sh*tposting, not rah rah rah you're banned from my birthday party. I've met a lot of really fun people on this site (some of whom have escaped and I'm still in contact with) and I just really enjoy messing about with people and having fun. Like, it's a 2000s browser politics game. I do not give enough sh*ts to take the game with "The Republic of Hawk Tuah Skibidi Toilet" on it seriously lmao.
So, as PM I have quite a few responsibilities, I manage the cabinet, I become a member of the Privy Council and as I've appointed myself as a minister and have been elected as a Member of Parliament arstocoup amirite I have a few extra responsibilities ontop of that. In the cabinet, I just make sure stuff is running smoothly, monitor what my ministers are doing and help them run their ministries, in the Privy Council I take part in advising the Emperor on whether or not to give assent to bills, what Imperial Decrees to pass and which not to and who to appoint to monarch-appointed positions. As a minister I run our WA department (or at least try to) and run our slackers program to get those WA members not endorsing our delegate to do so. I also run our WA voting program which advises our delegate on how to vote in the GA and SC.
As an MP, my responsibilities include debating bills submitted to Parliament, submitting bills to parliament and essentially being quality control. Make sure good bills get through, make sure bad bills get struck down.
When I ran for PM in my first term, I really just wanted to do something. I was getting a bit bored of NS at the time and was getting more towards a discord-centric Arsto and I decided "maybe I'll do something before I head off" and then I got invested in Avaldonia and really liked the community and like didn't head off. IRL trouble came up the first time and I had to resign but I intend to run for my third term next week when declarations of candidacy open. And if I had to guess about why I joined Avaldonia (because a-few-months-ago arsto wasn't very descriptive when he joined the server!!!!) I'd have to guess it was to have another server to spam ping Jay to be honest lmao I might have been invited, it might have just been I found the region he runs and decided I wanted to spam ping him in another server. Either way I think joining was a good decision.
This is a good question and I'm really happy that you asked that, in terms of across NS, I think people need to just be more calm with how they lead while still being stern. You don't need to write like you're making a speech after signing the Declaration of Independence, even a small "Hey, we've done something cool, check it out please :3 (link) @people" can work. Just as long as your message gets across, it's a good message. This was a big problem for me when I first joined NS, I thought the pacific delegates were like actual heads of state, with the way I read dispatches and stuff you'd think they were people you'd never interact with without being really lucky but like, no, they're actually usually really chill. I think people just need to be more relaxed in how they write, we're playing the haha funny browser text politics game, as long as people listen you're doing well.

In terms of future Avaldonian leaders, I'd just say try to maintain activity in the region and keep developing the region. We have lots of talented people in the region but quite a few don't get involved, even if you can get them involved for 5 minutes I see that as a success and you've helped to develop the community for the better.

If I had to change one thing on NS, I'd probably just nuke the drama to be honest. I'm here for having fun with people, not stupid drama. On the other hand for changing things in Avaldonia, I just want a more active region to be honest. We're already active but I'm working to make it better and get more of our talented community involved with what we do.
Thank you again for interviewing me - once again it has been a pleasure and I'd love to do it again some day =]

How and why you should obtain citizenship in New West Conifer

Why Obtain Citizenship?

Citizenship in New West Conifer has a variety of perks! And it allows you to enjoy this game to its full extent. Here's a short list:

  • Interact with our close-knit community! Citizenship gives you more access to our Discord server, and lets you participate in our community events, game nights, competitions, and more.

  • Participate in government. With citizenship, you can run for office, obtain a government job, or write and vote on legislation in our General Assembly, which each citizen is automatically a member of.

  • Participate in our roleplay! New West Conifer's fantasy roleplay is well thought out, in-depth, and full of dedicated roleplayers.

  • Find out about the best parts of Nationstates. There's a lot of communities out there, but here at New West Conifer, we have a long history and we know how to run a region. And we want you to be a part of that.

How Do I Obtain Citizenship?

There are two possible ways to obtain citizenship. We recommend you take route one. However, a mandatory step regardless of what route you decide to take is to join our LinkDiscord, which is where you can apply for citizenship.

Route One

Join the World Assembly - you can do this by navigating to the World Assembly tab on your left, or by clicking here. From there, you should be able to find a button to join the World Assembly.

Once you have joined the World Assembly, navigate to our Discord server and find the channel #the-chamber.

Ping our Commissioner of Internal Affairs The Fezzian League using @Commissioner of Internal Affairs.

Then, state that you are applying for citizenship. Provide a link to your nation, which resides in this region with WA-membership.

Then, you are obligated to disclose any regions you are currently a citizen of or formerly were a citizen of. You can ignore this if you are completely new to Nationstates.

Route Two

If for whatever reason you cannot join the World Assembly, or you do not wish to you may take Route Two. Instead of WA-membership, you are required to maintain a nation within New West Conifer for at minimum a week.

From then, you can apply for citizenship through the same process outlined in Route One.

Not Convinced?

We've convinced a lot of people! See who's a citizen below with our Citizenship Roll.

NBB Wrapped
"Whilst everyone is in eager anticipation your Spotify Wrapped statistics, we thought we would produce a similar style summary", says concerned citizen NUCL

Without much ado, I'll introduce this topic by saying that NUCL has produced something truly special for this edition of TSR. I'll copy here what he's written as a foreword, but please do click through afterward to view NBB Wrapped!

It's that time of year where we reflect on everything that's happened over the past year, it's also the time where Spotify judges our tragic music obsessions from the past year. Whilst everyone is in eager anticipation your Spotify Wrapped statistics, we thought we would produce a similar style summary of all the major statistics from The Region That Has No Big Banks. This year the region has reached new heights, and this could arguably be the biggest year in the regions history, from a commend of our regional founder, nine TSR editions published, five edition of a new regional podcast, five treaties signed and 15 games nights held... there has been plenty happening within our region. I won't spoil all the statistics but that gives you a flavour of the magnitude of this year in NBB.

November Cultural Events
Justice has failed us..

During November, we finished Spooky Week with a bang, hosting the Big Banker Night and the Common People Night and concluding our Murder Mystery. The Big Banker Night highlighted specifically paid games, featuring Lethal Company and Garry’s Mod, but it still saw a relatively good turnout. The Common People Night featured only free games, and as such saw higher turnout, though generally these events did not attract as many people as we typically expect them to. The Murder Mystery did gather quite a bit of interest, as our region’s detectives attempted to solve the question of who killed Yodle; in the end, The Washington Federation received a sentence of life in prison… and the real culprit, Ardeyn, went free!

On the 15th, we held a Joint Games Night with The Leftist Assembly, a region with which we have recently reopened relations after a lengthy stretch without formal ties. This event was massively successful, seeing the participation of nearly twenty people at its peak, including Comria, New Samon, and Marxist Land of Peoples from TLA, among many others from NBB and our friends. Our official cultural events slowed after that, though, as the administration shifted to preparing for the upcoming Winter Olympics and the 12 Days of No Big Banks, so expect December to be packed with fun events!

The Winter Olympics reveals its Host City
The Olympic Torch burns on

On the back of a successful cultural venture in the form of this year’s Regional Summer Olympics, it was only natural that a winter version would come around sooner rather than later. Thus, we present the Winter Regional Olympics, alternatively the Regional Winter Olympics! Since this summer, the Regional Olympics have been a way for us to involve our embassy partners in our cultural events (that aren’t our game nights). These Olympics have been run since 2022, with the inaugural editions being run for NBB members only and the 2023 editions being run for members of the InterLeft.

Compared to the Summer Olympics’ 20 events run, these games will have half the events, at 10. In an additional change, this winter edition will feature a home-field advantage for the hosts for the first time! For reference, the results of Olympic events are determined entirely by random number generation, with the advantage serving to give the host nation’s teams a slight… you know. With that in mind, a whopping 20 bids were submitted by both NBB residents and embassy partners, with 37 nations putting forward their votes toward these bids!

It’s through this article that we reveal that the city of Eleuthens, Southsea, will be hosting these 2024 Winter Regional Olympic Games with a grand total of 5 votes!

Expect more from us as we near the start of the Olympics on December 21st (save the date), especially when we open up our Olympic participation poll this next week! If you have an embassy with our region, we’ll be sure to contact you about it! See you then!

The State of Roleplay
"FINALLY", exclaims a weary region

Thanks to the tireless efforts of Gine Caruttiva who added borders, resources, and biomes to the roleplay map created by Syrasia, and is currently filling in the map based on everybody's claims, our region’s roleplay is very close to being restarted. Claibornia is beginning the process of confirming each nation’s lore, and our RP Admin team is working hard to ensure that claims do not conflict. We are very excited to finally reopen our roleplay! Before we officially start, I’d like to remind everyone that our roleplay is specifically not based on the real world - you cannot claim real-world borders, as the map has been created from scratch, and you cannot roleplay as a real-world nation, even if that nation does not currently exist. We’re excited to bring you a fully fresh start to our roleplay, free of the complications and arguments that arise from real-world situations... and instead boasting all-new complications and arguments!

Regional Census Held
So THAT's why he's called the Head of Data!

On November 5th I made an announcement that the Ministry of Domestic Affairs was going to do the Census, which the Ministry does every term. It is a chance for us to see what people think of the current Administration. It is also a chance for the people to suggest stuff and give feedback to the Government.

I wrote a report on it which you can read right here: page=dispatch/id=2579065

I will talk about some of the results here though, we got 30 responses to this census which is great! 40% of respondents say that we need to improve our RMB, in my opinion our RMB is great, we have a very active RMB.

We also got a lot of suggestions for games at our games nights, which I will (or if I already did) share with the Culture Committee.

Thanks for doing the Census! I enjoyed running it and hoped that you enjoyed it too.

Editorial - Seeking New Contributors
"Help", begs ATG

Full disclosure – I’m currently writing this article right at the end of my break from university on November 30th. If you check the date of publication, you’ll notice that yes, that’s the day before this edition is released.

Why am I telling you this? Well, handling a paper like this is a real passion of mine. I genuinely love TSR, and writing articles and editing the paper is something I hope to do for a long time to come. However, I’ve been trying to do this alone for too long, and it’s catching up with me. As a result, I want to send out an official call for contributors of any kind to The Social Reformer!

Writing for this paper is a breeze, especially if you pick a topic that interests you. We’ve had people cover issues of massive importance, like the troubles facing the LGBTQ+ community, but we’ve covered far more granular issues as well. If there’s something, either in the real world or right here on NationStates, that interests you, please reach out. I’d love to include articles written by our readers. It’s so important to highlight the thoughts and dedication of our region’s citizens.

If you don’t feel like writing, but maybe you’re an artist, or you like making puzzles, that’s perfect too! TSR isn’t just about articles, I just happen to love to write and have a little too much free time. Genuinely, if there’s anything at all that you even sort of think would make a good addition to our newspaper, please do reach out to me. This paper is about our region and our community, and we can only improve by featuring the hard work of that community.

Treaty of BANK-EU-RO-224
"It's like a SWIFT code", explains ATG

In late October, Faralried and I were approached by UPC, President of Europeia, asking if we’d be interested in signing a treaty with their region. Europeia was a fairly recent inclusion to our consulates, but they’d already supported us greatly in our efforts to commend Yodle, and many members of our region have been a consistent presence at EBC broadcasts, so our regions had already grown quite close. As a result, coincidentally, we'd actually already been planning to approach Europeia about a treaty, so UPC’s message came as a very welcome surprise.

The process of drafting and accepting the treaty was very straightforward. The treaty provides for the construction of onsite embassies, mutual defense and information sharing, and cultural, technological, and World Assembly collaboration. Our regional podcast took a great deal of inspiration from the EBC’s own podcast, and Europeia has been nothing but kind and helpful to us, so we’re quite pleased to open up this new chapter of relations with them! Here’s to the future, and to creatively-named treaties!

New Sinkers
Surely that's not going to cause any problems.

Late on November 26th (or the 27th, depending on your time zone), the NationStates community discovered that two new regions, The Outback and the Plains of Perdition, had been founded. Stunningly, these regions were designated ‘Sinkers’ like The Rejected Realms, and already, ejected nations were arriving at these new regions. For the first time in many years, NationStates had new GCRs.

Controversy arose almost immediately. Officials from The Rejected Realms were quite understandably upset, as their ‘spawn rate’ had effectively been drastically cut, and they were no longer guaranteed the massive rate of new nations that they’d experienced for years prior. Debate raged about the presence of these new regions, their impact on the game, and generally the reason for creating them in the first place. TRR officials seemed upset that, following their requests for a ‘mute button’ for nations (seeing as they couldn’t eject or ban troublemakers), they were instead met with two new competing Sinkers. They could eject nations, but those ejections weren’t necessarily permanent, and they were losing a great deal of their largest source of population growth at the same time.

Watching the rapidly developing situation, though, one thing was clear – a scramble for power was imminent. GCRs have been famously (or infamously) stable for years now, with coups becoming essentially unheard of given new developments in regional security. Two entirely new GCRs, though, meant two regions with no long-standing security networks or endorsement programs. Rumors bubbled about which Sinkers would become targets to which group of regions, and coalitions began to assemble, with diplomatic channels becoming a flurry of activity late that night. At a time when many of our regional officials were on vacation, this caused a great deal of chaos as we scrambled to formulate our response to the situation.

Before we had a chance to decide our favored course of action, the dust had already settled on the first wave of activity. The Outback came under the control of a coalition of members of The North Pacific, The West Pacific, and Lone Wolves United, who rapidly set up a sovereign regional government. Similarly, forces of The League and Concord, along with Europeia, took control of the Plains of Perdition, creating a Primarchate under Rhaza, also known as Quebecshire. In this unstable time, it is uncertain whether these administrations will remain in power long enough to cement their reigns. However, it is reassuring to see each of these regions attempting to establish an independent, sovereign government, and not simply function as an extension of some other, larger region. The Region That Has No Big Banks has officially recognized the new governments of these GCRs and wishes them luck during the possibly tumultuous times ahead.

Hulldom Resigns
"Shocking news", claims Faralried in what may be an understatement

In the most shocking news of this week, Hulldom, the Minister of Foreign Affairs for The North Pacific and the Governor of our great friends over in Blue Ridge has resigned both positions and seemingly intends to leave NS after another IC scandal.

Hulldom who unfortunately had a poor ending to his own delegacy of The North Pacific due to a very public IC scandal appears to be retiring from NS due to another. Speaking in a statement in the Blue Ridge server early in the morning of November 30th Hulldom acknowledged the scandal involved sharing private TNP intel with an unnamed TNP ally without further specifics of the incident in question. Hulldom went on to detail his abdication from governorship and transfer of power to Adkissa and then ended with announcing his intent to let Hulldom CTE after season 4 card inscription.

Obviously this comes as a shock to us here at No Big Banks, and we wish Adkissa and Blue Ridge all the best in these chaotic times. As treaty partners our ears are always open to help and assist in any way we can. Long live Adkissa’s reign!

Adkissa

DISCLAIMER: This interview was conducted before Hulldom's abdication, and as such may not fully reflect the developments of the last week. On a personal note, though, I think these responses are both remarkably well formulated and also a great indication of how Adkissa plans to continue with their newfound responsibilities.

Hey! For those who don’t know me, I’m Adkissa. Right now I serve as the First Minister, World Assembly Delegate, and Chair of the Executive Council in Blue Ridge, but you’ll also find me in Forest, Starlight, or TRTHNBB every now and then.
Honestly, it was a bit overwhelming at first. For the longest time I was ambassador to ~15 regions so I struggled to keep a consistent presence in each one, but I still follow the same philosophy of trying to pop in conversation every now and then. It’s a lot easier in some communities than others, but it’s worth it once you get to know the people in other regions.
Blue Ridge was on my radar almost since it was founded, but it took me until March before I brought myself to move in. I’ve always found it easier to join communities that are on the newer side so, once I finally took the step to leave my old community, joining Blue Ridge ended up being one of the best things I’ve done on NS.
I go through what I can best describe as phases regarding roleplay activity, and Blue Ridge’s setting definitely brought be into one. The idea of a modern world setting with individual but collective changes in history gave me a chance to expand on the intended idea I had for my nations lore, and let me build it as I went. As always though, I jumped in headfirst and burnt myself out after a few months!
For any region to build a community, you’ve got to welcome people in with open arms. Acceptance and fair treatment are driving factors in why some regions thrive while others fail, and by not welcoming people in you’re doing yourself and your region a detriment. The Golden Rule, treating others how you want to be treated, is a driving factor in my mentality and it’s something I think every community leader should strive to pursue in its entirety.
I love to contribute to the communities I take part in, and I’ve found that the best way for me to do that is by working in government where I can follow public interests. My first role as Minister of Integration really represented that as I tried to find community passions, gather numbers for events, and codified welcoming people into the region as standard.
The bulk of founding those connections is really just finding regions that are similar to ours and running from there. Between opening embassies with the Augustin Alliance, The League, and The (amazing) Region That Has No Big Banks, we got ourselves in a pretty comfortable position with likeminded people that I think we’ll see long term bonding and growth with. I would say that my largest business accomplishment during that term was definitely the number of embassies we opened, but personally I think that giving Blue Ridgers connections outside of their own region is the best thing I did.
I wanted to run for First Minister so that I could bring further impact on Blue Ridge. By holding the office I get to lead the government, so I have a much wider range of abilities to positively influence BR into the region that we want it to be. In regards to what I really wanted to change, though, it wasn’t much outside of clerical procedures. The region has always had an amazing community and I’m lucky to be a part of it.
Wow, I guess I’m not sure where to start! Within Blue Ridge I’ve done my best to establish a range of procedures, running from numbers to welcoming people in, and make sure that we’re continuing to develop the positive yet expressive community we’re known for. I also work closely with Basshobia and Oseanic, our respective former and current Ministers of Culture, to make sure that we’re pushing forward with events that capture people in. The majority of my first term was definitely focused on foreign affairs, as I worked diligently to open new embassies with likeminded regions and, eventually, signed two treaties with the Augustin Alliance and TRTHNBB respectively. Thanks to the incumbent MoFA, Blussouria, it’s become a lot easier to continue building relationships with our embassy partners and I hope to keep that same steam going forward.
The delegacy in Blue Ridge is constitutionally just government representation in the World Assembly. While I sometimes task myself with writing recommendation dispatches on important votes to us or our embassy partners (like the recommendation for Commend Yodle and Appreciation for Bigfoot and the Unknown), my primary duty is working with our overarching government to encourage WA membership and participation. Seeing as the WA is often a focal point of gameplay and a center for creative activity, it’s certainly a important that everyone join the WA if possible — every vote counts, after all!
I love newsletters. Whether it be something short about small regional updates, or a compendium of events across an entire season, regional tabloids do a stellar job at giving the reader a glimpse into the thought process of a region and those running it. It’s always a good thing to have regular publications, though I will admit Blue Ridge hasn’t put many out so far.
Treaties represent the legalization of an existing bond between two regions. Even if not a cultural nature, it bonds two regions together in a pledge of mutual friendship for the foreseeable future. By signing one, you’re making an investment in another community and asking that they do the same for yours in a spirit of camaraderie and mutual benefit. As for why I approached with a treaty proposal with NBB, it was honestly something I had been thinking of for some time. Blue Ridge is undoubtedly close with NBB, it’s imposible to argue against y’all not being our foremost cultural partner, and I wanted to make sure that it was properly reflected through formal arrangements. It was a pleasure to work with you and Fara through that speedy signing process, and I can’t thank Hull enough for giving me the “Hometown Banking Compact” name.
If not anything else, my time on NS has taught me that you need to be willing to compromise and that you should always be wary when managing a community. Out of every mistake I’ve made here, I think the one I would undo would to be wary of those around me and extra careful when managing a community. I would’ve saved myself a lot of stress had a younger Adkissa known to be less stubborn and more observant of cultural undertones.
If I could change anything about Blue Ridge, I think I would change what I know. I’d love to get more people involved in government, but I’m just not sure how to! As for NationStates as a whole, though, I think I would just want people to believe in second chances for those who deserve them. A lot would change if we would do that.

Gine Caruttiva

I just found the game through a youtube short, and thought "hey, that might sound cool" and then I made my nation. I didn't know I could change my nation name afterwards, so that's why I got my randomly generated one. I tried making another one, my main CT'ed for a while, but then I just let the other one die and went back to gine.
saw bernie, found him cool. and im socialist
idk, just fun and nice people. very welcoming, very happy, :3
I just found it cool, since the regions I was in were just very closed
I think Direct Democracy (even irl) is just the better option, limited corruption and expanding political rights. But in this region, I've learned that it would just be very inefficient. Could work in bigger regions with more activity, but not here.
I think that ATG had a cool thing going, and I wanted to be part of something bigger. But I just (personally) after a while thought that TPP wasn't very friendly, I was just ignored a lot or nothing every happened. NUCL offered me to join, and NUCL was PM at the time. Just thought it was cool. There were also talks about merging already, etc.
Mostly NUCL, and the interest in having a position in government
I like being voted into office instead of appointed. It shows me how much people like and support me. Running for election also gives you a wide range of influence (people getting to know about you)
Boring. I did reform the BLF in part and did a massive endortating campaign, but not much more. Then my position was just removed after NUCL passed the law to remove my Ministry.
I was disappointed and angry, but afterwards I just had to accept it. The PM, Mjau, didn't do much either, and I just didn't have much to do in my minor office afterwards.
Massively reforming the party at multiple occasions. Recruiting a massive amount of members and influencing the regional politics by a lot. Of course, this was only possible with the help of our members, especially my deputy NUCL. Without him, I would've probably not come so far.
Boring. I can't recall anything I did.
Thought I was too inexperienced. And not known enough. But now, next election, I will run for PM. I believe I'm ready.
As I stated in one of my bills, the DPM should also have power within the government. It is an elected position, and just being there for the PM to use in positions or just replace them doesn't make a lot of sense.
Lovely. It's a pleasure to work with our PM. But, I don't have much todo. Currently, I'm focusing on RP and finishing it up. But I'll pass some laws to give me like proper stuff to do.
Parties are not as important as irl. I believe that parties should be a group of people that are like-minded. Not a voting block, or a massive party whip. Our party also brought a lot of bills and iniatives through. As example, we have a bill writing form, where you can send us your bill idea and we'll write it for you/help you write it. Removing parties removes the right to assemble.
Be nice and respectful. You'll get rewarded as well.
I reject these allegations! Insinuations are a journalistic trick. These should not occur in the free democratic basic order. You should have questioned me differently! Now I ask myself: Where do they come from? Which institution are you? Is there a private association that turns a little opinion research into a business to encourage me to buy something?
