I didn't expect going abroad would require to much cleanup! Should I just leave Gildor in Mordor?

Noldoria wrote:Also, be sure to have zero zombies before you return (don't want people tracking stuff in). If necessary, we could set up a quarantine region as a half-way point - ie: nations enter, we cure their zombies down to zero, then they enter Middle Earth.

Ah, I had missed this, sorry. I'll send Gildor to a solo region for quarantine.

This hasn't been very clear in this event, so hopefully we can clarify things more in the future.

Also, this is not 100% confirmed, but just my educated guess.

If the region has a negative Z-Rating then you are safe, there are no zombies (unsure but most likely)
If the region has a low Z-Rating then there are no "Sudden" infections in your nation on a per-hour update interval.
If the region has a high Z-Rating then you get + zombies in your nation on a per-hour update interval; how many depends on how high the Z-Rating is.

If there are "Zombie exporter" nations in the region (those that have embraced the zombies) then they also passively infect your nation. You can drop the zombie exporter tag from those nations if they get hit with cure missiles a couple of times or at least until the healthy people outnumber the zombies.

Moreover, if the region is actively pursuing a cure then on a per-hour basis your nation gets cured. This depends on the cure research stage, our region apparently is stuck at stage 2 or whatever it is (the "Antibodies found") and it won't update any more; other regions have other tags like "Cure successfully deployed".

On Middle Earth Roleplay the nation LOTR started researching the cure at the beginning of the event and then went to sleep, and when I woke up the whole region was safe from zombies - even if no-one sent any cure missiles, they just passively cured just from researching the cure.

All of the above make me draw a few conclusions:
- if our region already has no more zombies and a nation moves here and is NOT a "Zombie exporter" (it does not openly embrace the zombies) then they will -NOT- be able to passively infect anyone else in the region
- said nation will be passively cured just from the cure research of the other nations in our region

Roughly how long is left and are we curing any other regions?

Bombadil, it is mentioned in the News section that it'll take around 4 more hours.
Unless something fishy happens in the mean time .... I believe that to be the time when the event ends.

Personally I am no longer curing any other region. I believe that we did our fair share of goodwill and help! I tried to visit all the in-theme regions we have open embassies with (that were not password-protected), although there are so many more regions in our part of the NS world that its just a monumental work to keep everyone safe.

I was trying to help cure Mordor earlier but was derailed by other parties that wanted to infect Mordor. Came back later to cure them, did some work but enough time spent on the event for me so I'll leave them as they are right now.

As I am logging out right now, I will write more later (after the event officially ends). But for now thank you to all that contributed to this year's event and thank you to those that went out of their way to help other regions as well!

Ah well, good job all round - and it was nice to go and help Lothlorien.

Hail all Nations of Middle Earth,

This is merely an informal thank you for all of your fortitude, courage, contributions and hard work. Not only did we utterly destroy the invading zombie hordes, we were the first-ranked in the entire world for "Most Survivors + No Zombies" for quite a long while. It seems we have finished at #8 - which is still extremely good. Then, not content to merely defend our own lands from destruction, many of us came to the aid of our allied regions, and purged them of the zombie menace. Truly this is a day upon which I am proud to call myself a member of the region of Middle Earth. Thank you.

Now, this was only a quick and informal thanks. I will sift through the newsfeed for our region to prepare an after-action report. If anyone has any items they would like to contribute, please send them to me. Also, those people who used puppet-nations - if you send me a list of the names of those puppets, the primary nation name to which they should be credited, I will make sure to credit the primary with the 'cures' of the puppets.

Also, when that is done, there will be a formal, proper "Thank You" to all everyone who launched cure missiles, in the form of a 'Barrow-Wight Slayer of Middle Earth 2020' badge, and listing your nation name and deeds in an official Regional Dispatch of Record. Forevermore, people will be able to look back and see who did what great deeds this day.

Thank you all again!

Well,

Lady eowyn wrote:That was fun!

Indeed! I've started looking forward to it every year. Back when I first started in Nationstates I didn't know anything about Z-Day. I rarely logged in more than once a week. I'd log in after Halloween, and see all this 'cure missile' stuff in the newsfeed, and read about the event. I'd say "Oh, wow, that sounds fun! Too bad I missed it. I'll be sure to remember next Halloween to be on for the event". Of course, after a year, I'd forget, and I would say "Oh no! I missed it! Ok, well, I'll really, really remember next year". Well, after I missed the first half of Z-Day 2018, I wrote myself a reminder-note, and taped it next to my computer in my office. So, 2019 was the first one I was ready & on time for. It is a fun and interesting challenge.

Oh, I didn't realize I joined in the first time that you partook in the event. I just assumed you guys traditionally got together for Z-Day.

Well, it's impressive what you managed to achieve over such a short period of time, and with a relatively small number of folks.

It seems the region did an amazing job during Z-day! Special thanks to everyone who played, especially Noldoria who I know put in a lot of work!

Noldoria That's a very cool dispatch, thanks. How did you go about compiling the statistics from the newsfeed? By hand, or using some tool?

Also, Tatarica, I see you have a few more humorously-named puppets besides Dispatch. Gave me a chuckle.

Hello Z-Day 2020 Participants,

This is a reminder to please look through the Dispatch "Preliminary Z-Day 2020 credits", and let me know if anything needs to be corrected - in particular, if the contribution of any puppets should be folded into a primary nation, please telegram me with the names of the primary & puppets.

Wow, that's a huge number of strikes for Noldoria!

I can't even begin to imagine what kind of efforts were put into accomplishing that. Personally, in the Z-day event I used my laptop and had the website loaded in 4 distinct webpages (on 4 different browsers, actually on 2 + 2 incognito modes) so I could load 4 nations at a time and use the same 20s cool-off timer with all of them simultaneously.

But I'm sure there are some better ways, while still retaining the fun of the event and within the site rules. After all, for me, the event is more about the "fun" we have as a community and the bonding over keeping our region safe against the rise of the zombies. That's why I have all the respect for all the players that put some effort and spent some time on their nation to cure others.

Dwarf wrote:Also, Tatarica, I see you have a few more humorously-named puppets besides Dispatch. Gave me a chuckle.

Haha, indeed! Those names might soon be edited out of the dispatch if I fold the contributions to my nation, but nice catch! ;p

Hail all nations of Middle Earth

Let it be known that the Commendation of all nations that aided in the defense of the fair lands of Middle Earth and also other allied regions has been published as an official Regional Dispatch of Record. It is fitting that this should be done on Veteran's Day. The commendation will remain available as an official dispatch of the region in perpetuity, but is also attached below for ease of reading. Note that the actual image file (gif) of the badge is available via a link in the dispatch. Nations that have been awarded this badge are free to display it in any manny they wish, but it was specifically designed to be recognizable when shrunk to a small size, making it suitable for display on a custom banner (recommended), or nation flag. Please see Noldoria's display of campaign badges for an example.

=================================================================================================

Commendation of Z-Day 2020 Middle Earth Participants

Whereas the Dread Necromancer raised an army of Barrow-Wights with which to assail the fair lands of Middle Earth on October 31st 2020, and

Whereas the nations listed below, driven by a keen desire to preserve the peoples and lands of Middle Earth, did summon supreme courage to rise, stand shoulder-to-should to oppose this horde of Barrow-Wights, and

Whereas the finest warriors of these nations did give of their strength and blood to utterly and completely defeat the Barrow-Wight menace in eleven hours of intense combat, and

Whereas by this excellent effort the region of Middle Earth was ranked https://www.deviantart.com/noldoria/art/Middle-Earth-and-Ainulindale-ZDay-2020-860949410 number one in the world in "Most Survivors + No Infected" for many hours, and

Whereas after cleansing their own region, these brave soldiers selflessly rode to the aid of other regions that yet still were greatly imperiled, including Lothlorien, Mordor and The Shire, fighting therein to cleanse and make safe also these lands, also earning much positive renown in the name of Middle Earth, and

Whereas after the threat of the Barrow-Wights had been driven away from all lands, Middle Earth was ranked number eight in the world for "Most Survivors + No Infected", and

Whereas the brave and selfless conduct of these nations will shine as among the finest of examples to all peoples in Middle Earth and other regions, no doubt through this inspiration begetting yet further great deeds yet to be seen, and

Whereas all peoples of Middle Earth and many other regions do owe these nations a great debt of gratitude for their courageous defense,

Therefore the leadership of Middle Earth does hereby commend and thank the following nations, conferring unto them the right to possess and display the https://www.deviantart.com/noldoria/art/badge-ZDay-middle-earth-2020-860949546 Badge of the Barrow-Wight Slayer 2020 for their peerless service upon Z-Day 2020, and commit this record of deeds valourous to be remembered until Dagor Dagorath and the breaking of Arda.

Over all regions aided, there were 26358 total cure missile strikes by 8 nations curing 892495 million populace:

Quick calculation makes me feel that I got the best ratio of strikes to cures, I hereby claim winning the whole day. I know Dagor seems a lot higher but those are fake cures.

I won bigly.

How about a change of topic? What is everyone's favorite Tolkien poem or song? Mine is The Contest of Sauron and Felagund in the Silmarillion. Finrod is such a beautiful but tragic character and although he gets plenty of accolades I think he always gets sold short when people start discussing the greatest elves.

A strong second is The Song of Durin. I stumbled on it as performed by Clamavi De Profundis a year or two ago and loved it. I've been listening to it again and the more I do the more I realize how fantastic it is. If you haven't heard their version, it does a very good job of capturing the majesty and awe of Durin and Khazad Dum.

You know, I really agree with you about Finrod and I do enjoy that poem, though it is not my favourite.
I think (I say think, though I am very sure) my favourite is the Lament of the Rohirrim. Particularly this version of it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XPrKSLpm0EY&ab_channel=AdeleMcAllister

Coming in second is Legolas' Song of the Sea, with some contest from The Fall of Gil-Galad and the Song of Durin

There are just so many! I like Treebeard's songs, the Road Goes Ever On (especially Pippin's version in the ROTK movie).
I could go on, but I've mentioned so many that I should probably let someone else chime in :)

I didn't realize until this week, but it looks like Tolkien didn't just reuse the same names from what he thought would be unpublished works, he borrowed for his poems too. Those Dwarves plagiarized the Lay of Leithian when they wrote the Song of Durin.

King Thingol sat on guarded throne

in many-pillared halls of stone:

there beryl, pearl, and opal pale,

and metal wrought like fishes’ mail,

buckler and corslet, axe and sword,

and gleaming spears were laid in hoard
