Thailand to recognise same-sex civil partnerships

"Thailand’s military government has backed a bill that would make the country the first in Asia to recognise same-sex civil partnerships.

"The civil partnership bill is likely to require approval from Thailand’s new parliament after the country’s general election in February. Some activists opposed the bill due to limitations in the rights it would offer, while others welcomed it as a step towards marriage equality.

"“It’s a big moment,” Nada Chaiyajit, 39, an activist and law graduate who was consulted by the government for the draft, told the Guardian. “They [ministers] have studied the UK and other countries and seen that the first step is civil unions. I’m confident that within five years they’ll put [full] marriage equality on the agenda.”"

Long-running, popular BBC soap opera to have gay bar?

Albert Square could soon have an alternative nightspot to the Queen Vic after EastEnders announced plans for the soap’s first gay bar.

More than three decades after the show became the first to feature a homosexual kiss on primetime television, EastEnders’ senior executive producer said she wants it to do a better job at reflecting London’s diversity.

Kate Oates, who recently joined from Coronation Street, said: “I am …really interested in bringing some more LGBTQ characters in, and maybe we will have a new precinct for them as well.

Seminal work of gay literature

Radclyffe Hall’s 1928 novel The Well of Loneliness was subjected to a vicious campaign of attack led by the Sunday Express for its depiction of lesbian relationships, eventually being suppressed and censored in the UK as a piece of “obscene libel”. But the author’s own papers, which are set to be digitised, reveal the outpouring of support Hall received from members of the public around the world, who wrote to thank her for creating, in her heroine Stephen Gordon, a character with whom they could identify.

Seen today as a seminal work of gay literature, The Well of Loneliness tells of the “invert” Stephen Gordon, who realises from a young age that she is attracted to women, dresses in masculine clothes, and falls in love. Hall, a lesbian herself, wrote it to “put my pen at the service of some of the most misunderstood people in the world”. At its raciest, it goes no further than “she kissed her full on the lips, as a lover”, with a night of passion described as “that night they were not divided”. It ends with Stephen’s plea: “Give us also the right to our existence!”

Update from Discoveria / LGBT University Founder

Hey guys, time to give an update on my situation and the future of the region.

I decided to leave my job and teach myself some new skills before finding something else. I also have a number of personal projects that I plan to launch soon, including: contracting company, adult game development, and erotic writing (the latter two LGBT-focused). This leaves NationStates very low down on my priority list, especially since many of the people I used to know in game have moved on from NS.

I'll continue to log in to all my nations for the foreseeable future, in case I put more time into NS than I predict now. However, I also feel that the LGBT University mission is best realised, on a personal level, as a creative writing/research project to be hosted on my own website or blog, rather than within NationStates.

This means that I'll be holding this region in trust for anyone who wants to do something more interesting with it. If you would like to take the reins here, please get in touch. (Note, I make no commitment to handing over control just because someone asks. I'd want to take intentions, track record, people's advice etc. into account.)

I hope you are all enjoying the new year, those of you who have read this far, and that life is treating you well and keeping things interesting. :) This is not a goodbye. If the time comes to say goodbye, I'll find ways to make sure the next incarnation of 'Discoveria' is accessible. And of course I am reachable by telegram.

Sounds good. All the best to you.

Wishing you all the best - sounds like an exciting new year!
