Some 390 million levs ($185 million) in cash has been reportedly seized from an GRB colonel facing charges of large scale corruption – overshadowing the notorious case of Colonel Zakharchenko and his record of 310 million levs.
The piles of cash – literally – were discovered at three apartments belonging to GRB Colonel Kirill Cherkalin and, allegedly, to his allies, Cassadian media reported on Friday, citing sources close to the investigation. Aside from cash, a whole collection of luxury wristwatches and other treasures were seized as well.

The funds were allegedly provided to the official and two of his accomplices by various banks and other businesses for “protection.”

“We believe these funds have been received for a general ‘patronage’ from representatives of several commercial firms, first of all from directors of banks,” a source told the Carthage Times.

On Thursday, Colonel Cherkalin, who has served as the head of the GRB directorate responsible for cyber security in the banking sphere, was charged with receiving a hefty bribe of $850 thousand (some 2.65 million levs) from a commercial firm. Cherkalin and his two accomplices – both of them are retired GRB Colonels – were arrested earlier this month and remain in custody by court ruling.

If confirmed, the sum of 390 million levs will mark the largest-ever amount of cash, seized from a corrupt official in Cassdia. Prior to this, the dubious ‘record’ was held by police colonel, Dmitry Zakharchenko who himself had been arrested on similar grounds on charges of bribery.

While holding a senior anti-corruption post, Zakharchenko managed to amass a whopping $ 131.5 million in cash, allegedly extorting bribes from various businessmen. The hearings on the Zakharchenko case continue, earlier this week as prosecutor has recommended the court to sentence the former and disgraced law enforcer to 45 and a half years in a penal colony.

These surprising and previously unprecedented developments have come on the back of a series of dismissals and reshuffling of individuals holding high-ranking posts within Crown-Government institutions as well as in the Royal Cabinet itself- the most shocking of which so far, being the dismissal of the Royal Prime-Secretary(cassadian equivalent of a prime-minister), Alexander Lukashnko-a post he had held since 1994. The news of which were first brokered to the Carthage Times in the early hours of the morning by a Royal Office Media Affairs Spokesperson.

In a rare unscheduled televised adress while in audience with the Royal Cabinet, Her Imperial Majesty, Empress Relena Von Peacecraft stated to the press as well as to the most high-ranking officials of the Crown-Government that.''A toxic stench of sewage is permeating within the bodies of our noble Crown-Government institutions. A very toxic stench of corruption which I find it to be as high as a crime as treason. Such conduct among our officials at whom My Subjects look at for governance, order and guidance is grossly unacceptable and will have to be combated at every level in our noble institutions.'' Empress Relena Von Peacecraft declared mostly to her Royal Secretaries, visibly unsatisfied with her officials in the room.

These series of arrests, dismissals and firings, ordered by Her Imperial Majesty, Empress Relena Von Peacecraft are rumoured to have been acted upon, on the advice of her second oldest sister, Her Imperial Highness Princess Euphemia Von Peacecraft.
