I just did one of my rounds for the night. Not a fun job, but an easy one, and how much could one expect from a government job?

The building is empty and dark, but its quiet. That's good. There shouldn't be anyone in here anymore. Wide halls echo my footsteps. Pipes creak. Machines carrying untold information hum from behind doors I'm not qualified to open. My only job is to ensure they're closed.

I thought I saw someone in an adjacent room. An outline in the window. A tall shadow. I stopped for him. As he stood there, I considered my options. I could approach him - it? - but with what intent? Escort it out? Attempt to arrest it? Ask its intentions?

Before I could find an answer for myself, it moved. A black smoke wavered in the air above a charred wrist. A cordially gesture from a being that saw me as a pest.

It wasnt scary. It belonged here. It wasnt intruding on our space - we were on its. I waved back, and finished my round.

I wish it would give me my reflection back.
