The most serene republicans wrote:Excuse me? If you're attempting to link Pedro Castillo to the PCP-SL, this is incorrect. He quite literally was a member of the "peasant patrols" (Rondas Campesinas) in the 80's, and spent half the time in this election just distancing himself from the left-wing of his party. I don't like Castillo at all, I think he's pretty much just another conservative populist, but accusing someone of being a Senderista/MOVADEF is a pretty heavy accusation, especially in Peru. And it's no surprise that the peruvian right has been dragging this accusation for so long, because red scare is one of the prefered tactics of Fujimorism...

And from what I said I bet you can guess my thoughts on the elections.

Forgive me if I may be wrong, but this is my experience among Peruvians.

I have quite a few Peruvian friends and many of whom really dislike Keiko — but they keep mentioning Castillo's ties to Sendero and other similar militias.

I did some research myself last month and sure enough, found that while he was indeed part of the Campesina in the 1980s, during the first round of voting he expressed some worrying beliefs about Sendero and MRTA too. He later toned these down after becoming one of the finalists.

I mean, if you're so sure then I might have missed something, but from what I know those were pretty wild allegations. Considering the whole context of the left in Peru, to me this feels suspiciously exactly like a "Terruqueo" thing, and knowing that several journalists were fired or resigned amidst allegations of censorship by pro-fujimori parts of major news outlets, I trust the media coverage on this even less...

Hey guys, I'm back! I had a nice break, and I'll probably be active more sporadically from now on, but I am back for now. Crazy with how many things can happen in just 2 days! I'll respond to a few relevant posts.

Ruinenlust wrote:So...did anyone else see the Annular Solar Eclipse?

No, it was only 30% in my area and it was very early in the morning, along with it being cloudy, so it was practically invisible. However, I did watch a livestream and was really cool. I do remember sometime during summer one year, a solar eclipse happened mid-day and there was not a cloud in the sky, so for about 10 minutes it was like night outside. Crickets started chirping, animals started to go asleep, it was amazing. I'll never forget that.

Cat-herders united wrote:So what’s y’all’s hot takes on the elections in Peru?

Personally, I hate Keiko with a passion but I also don't really like Castillo. However, Castillo is definitely the preferable candidate and I'm happy that she's once again lost (she has managed to lose an election 3 times, all very close to each other: by 1.5% in 2011, by .1% in 2019 and around .2% in 2021.) I mean, just because he's a socialist doesn't mean he's a member of the Shining Path, he has relentlessly denied these accusations and he was never a member. Keiko will probably challenge the results yes, but she'll end up losing.

A random rant about food:

So, there exists this abomination of nature which is called the "Party Size" bag of M&Ms. Need I say more? When I've gone shopping the past several weeks (I usually go about twice a month), a "Party Size" bag of M&Ms has magically fallen into my shopping cart, against part of my will, but very much in line with another part of my will. The problem with chocolate and me is that I have absolutely no control, and if it exists in the house, it will be eaten freely until it is entirely exhausted. I'm very disciplined and good about eating, but the control mechanism springs from shopping for only healthy things, which attacks the problem at the source. And if I end up buying crap, crap will be eaten. The control works because if I only buy boring healthy foods, I'm not as hungry for them. (And for reference, I absolutely never eat out or order out, just as a matter of policy. It's all too rich, the portions are too large, and it's a surprisingly large waste of money as compared with making one's own food at home. Once the pandemic started, I decided that I would stop eating out or getting take out at all, no matter what. So that's not a thing for me.)

But back to the [Diabetes] Party Size bag of M&Ms. A "serving" (read: one out of many handfuls) is 140 kilocalories, and there are 38 serving in a bag. That's over 5,300 extra kilocalories!! Wtf? Why does this even exist? How is my hunter-gatherer brain supposed to ration an enormous vast of brightly colored, magically tasty M&Ms? Answer: it's not, and I'm not adapted for that, and neither is anyone else. This is part of what's wrong with our society. Try parceling them out in little plastic bags labeled with dates, before which I can't eat them? Nope! It's like, "I'm gonna get me moar M&Ms, now!" These hyper-palatable foods are poison.

So the moral of the story is that I don't buy them at all. If it gets into the house, it will be eaten with reckless abandon, and so the solution is to not do this. In the last month and a half that a satanic shelf of them appeared in the store, I've gotten them three times, and consumed over 15,000 extra kilocalories that I mostly would not have compensated for at all, and probably gained three pounds or so in the process. Damn M&Ms, the sweet succor of life itself. No, it's back to eating a wretched apple or a miserable peanut butter and jelly sandwich for a sweet "treat," like a 19th century peasant. But that's the better path, in the end.

Years and years ago, I was very, very overweight, from childhood. I've been on this decade-and-a-half crusade to lose weight, and I've gradually done it, pound by pound. I'm not good at losing weight, but my strength is in managing to maintain my progress and to not backslide. These things of things happen, like with the evil M&M situation, but I kind of freak out and clamp down. 'You don't have to lose weight that you don't gain in the first place,' I remind myself.

But damn, sometimes this modern society pisses me off. Why are there even "party sized" bags of M&Ms? Party for whom? The medical system that profits off of people being so unhealthy? The Mars corporation? You'd be better off lighting up a joint.

I know this. Every once in a while I have such an epiphany after which I don't buy unhealthy stuff for a couple of weeks or even months, but then something annoying happens and I need the mental support that healthy food just cannot provide. And as soon as one sheep jumps over the fence, it turns out that I am still weak after all. But supermarkets aren't helping. Healthy stuff is usually priced as if they are collector's items - which they must be, because they are often hard to find as well. Unhealthy stuff is cheap, easy to grab, and often on discount. And politicians keep complaining that the health care system is so expensive; well, if you keep maintaining an unhealthy population! I keep voting them in office thinking that they'd be able to do something about things like these, but as it seems, politicians have no power at all...

Are you sure that's Kilocalories? Because if it is one handful is around 70 times the average daily recommended caloric intake, which makes me quite scared for anyone eating that.

Sorry, I should have clarified. A "Calorie" is actually one thousand actual calories. The small-C calorie is the scientific unit for the energy required to raise a gram of water by one degree celsius. A big-C Calorie is one thousand of these (the amount of energy required to raise a kilogram of water by one degree celsius), and is used primarily in food science. But it's kind of dumb. If would be like if an inch were an inch, and twelve inches were called an Inch (i.e. a foot).

Actually, when a product says “Calories”, usually they are talking about kilocalories. “Cal” with an uppercase C means “kilocalories” (though they can also use “kcal”), while with a lowercase C it usually refers to a small calorie. However, the “small calorie” is rarely used outside of certain science fields, and in food generally they use kilocalories/greater calories/kcal/Cal

hunger, like sex, is at least partially in the brain. there is of course also physical biological need to consume nutrients.
the problem is that it is not always easy to distinguish between the two.

habbits can help or hinder, but there is no simple one size fits all answer.
