People who hunt game never do it just to shoot the animal. It's done to put food on the table and control the population so the land doesnt exceed its carrying capacity. Too many deer will eat all the food and result in them all starving to death. Never shoot an animal if you know it will take a long time to die, because you dont want it to suffer. When you shoot a deer for example, your first shot should kill it where it stands. Also, the money you pay to get a hunting license goes towards conservation. You need game warden to ensure people don't take too many animals, or hunt protected species. Legal hnters view animals with a lot of respect, and will gladly put their time, money, and effort into ensuring their game is protected, well fed, and taken in a sustainable and ethical way. Also as Areulder stated, the main targets are the older ones who have definitely mated several times and are soon to wear down their teeth to the point where chewing is difficult.

If we're doing wintertime forest quotes of the fortnight, Robert Frost's "Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening" is one of my favorites and I've used exurbs from it as the Forest quote many years ago. I would be happy to see it make a return sometime.

Silly Ransium, Robert Frost’s woods aren’t in the exurbs, they’re clearly in a rural area. “Stopping by the Walmart on a snowy evening” just doesn’t have the same ring to it.

Ha, that’s too good to fix. And cuppa is British slang for a cup of tea. I guess they drink so much it’s implied.

I will admit that I caught this reply without the backstory of the discussion, but I disagree.

In my real life country, Romania, people hunt for sport. Like shooting a basketball. The money payed for licenses goes to the government and they report fake numbers of animals to have more people apply for licenses.

That's how we reached a situation where now we have lost over 70% of all numbers of all major forest animals (bears, foxes, wolves, boars, lynxes, deer etc) legally in my country (real one).

In conclusion, I think hunting is evil. We no longer live in a society where it is needed, so people do it just for sport, to kill animals so that they feel more important. We're not some tribes living on some remote island or in some rainforest to need it to live. Most of us here live in major cities or with cities close to us.

This is one thing I care about for I see everyday how the ecosystem is destroyed and then I hear/read replies about hunting license money going to support conservation? yea right, maybe in a handful of countries, in most however they do not.

There are some places where hunting is beneficial, however.

Take my state in the US, Illinois for example. Human activity has long pushed the large predators out of the state, to the point where coyotes are really the only major carnivore anyone talks about (There have been sightings of cougars but nothing more than that).

That being said, we have deer. A lot of deer. A metric fvck-ton of deer. Without any large predator to cull their numbers, the deer populations have skyrocketed out of control and this creates an imbalance in our ecosystems. For the sake of balance and for preventing the deer from decimating the ecosystem by overgrazing, it is beneficial to have people hunt deer.

There's a point where hunting goes beyond the realm of reasonability, such as in your country where you've killed of 70% of your megafauna, but to say it is flat out evil isn't accurate either. As a species, we've had such a massive impact on our world and in the food webs that in order to take responsibility for our actions, we need to manage the environment and return balance to an otherwise imbalanced order.

Full disclaimer: This being said, I have an intense desire to trophy hunt a bull moose.

I use the term for my morning coffee. But I've also been asked what I'm talking about, so I guess it's not as common an expression as I'd assumed.

'Cuppa Joe', a cup of coffee, lol.

"Etymology

Of uncertain origin.

  • Possibly a shortening of "cup of jamoke", from java + mocha: this origin was given in a military officer's manual from 1931, around when the term first appeared.

  • Alternatively, perhaps a use of joe (“fellow, guy”), signifying that coffee was the drink of the common man.*

  • Another theory suggests that US soldiers in World War I (1914-1918) referred to a serving of instant coffee made by the G. Washington Coffee Refining Company (founded in 1910) as a "cup of George", and that the common abbreviation of the name "George" ("Geo.") was then read as "Joe""

https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/cup_of_joe

I got the expression from my father, who had been a soldier in the pacific during WW2.

* Also where we get the term 'G.I. Joe' for a soldier. 'G.I.' being government issue and a 'Joe' being slang for an everyday person, a guy.

A relative of mine got generously compensated by the state government for hunting deer in Wisconsin because they have the same problem. He also took snapping turtle in the Mississippi River so I tried that once at a family reunion (it tasted beefy). One of those snappers bit his thumb once and it swelled up to nearly the size of a baseball (he was lucky to not lose it because I saw one break a broomstick apart once). I still don't approve of hunting and/or trapping but at least those critters are far from defenseless.

I will ask him to email some to me instead of eating them and then shall TG them to you. You will just need the capability to reassemble complex organic structures and the deer that you reassemble will lack qualia.

I'm gonna start a "Daily Quips with Quazzle" here in Forest, as an excuse to talk about non-Forestian things, and to not appear like that one person who talks about something completely different (*cough* not me *cough*). The niceties of normal moral constraints

[<Big Old Testament beard, shepherd's staff, and general garb>]

So, here in California, the end of Fire Season is marked by the start of Flash Flood Season. In fact, I accidentally played Noah to an entire colony of ants, having rested my folded up umbrella on the ground while waiting under a bus shelter last night. Got off the bus at the destination, opened by umbrella like you normally do in the rain, and the entire thing looked like that television static snow. Naturally, I left the umbrella out on the patio to dry, and they were gone by morning. On the one hand, I've basically transplanted an entire colony of ants into my apartment building. On the other, I am now God of the Formicidae.

Every time I see an (implied) statement about how people have access to <preferred food source>, I feel the need to post the following link:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Food_desert

Generally I do this in contexts wherein someone assumes that since they can afford to shop the gluten-free vegan section of their <big city supermarket>, everyone can, and thus anyone still eating meat is "evil." In this context, I would stress the existence of rural food deserts, and note that while the big city urban folk might be able to buy houses and rent apartments next to the gluten-free vegan section at <big city supermarket>, not everyone can, and so sweeping generalizations about how "most of us" should be avoided (EDIT: although on a second reading, you actually say "most of us here," and I'm not an expert on Romania, since I don't live there, so fair enough I guess. I stand by the general principle of this post, however.)

Just for the record, I rent an apartment and do most of my grocery shopping in the gluten-free vegan section ("Produce," before the kids took over :| )
