With Law n. 841 of October 21th 1950, the first ever Land Reform was launched. Partially founded by the Marshall Plan, the law is considered by many as the most important reform of the Italian Post-War. The law redistributed land to farmers allowing them to become small enterpreneurs and thus destroying the large estates which, especially in the South, constituted small fiefs. The only collateral effect was that of damaging the industrial capabilities of the sector because of the smaller size of the newer enterprises. Yet, the farmers themselves solved this issue through the creation of cooperatives. Over the time, both productivity and profitability grew, thus substantially improving life in the countryside.

In Sweden our national day is when we gained independence from the Kalmar Union. But it isn’t really celebrated, I think it’s on June 6th. Midsummer is much more of a celebration of Sweden than the national day is itself.
