The super long distance routes like the California Zephyr and Southwest Chief serve mainly as tourist attractions (due to their amazing scenery) and to provide transit to rural towns that have no interstates/airports/etc. However, they run for many days (which costs a lot of crew/dining car/water/fuel fees) across sparsely populated areas on main freight arteries, and therefore, are unlikely to ever turn a profit because of that. I would foresee those routes remaining federally funded in perpetuity due to the combination of their necessity but lack of profitability.

However, I do think that there are quite a few arteries that do have potential for profitable services (like in texas, florida, etc.) where Amtrak is not a viable option now. In those cases, I think that the dawn of private companies is a very good thing because they can focus on reaching profitability and providing good service in that regions without worrying about Amtrak's chronic funding woes.

Ultimately, I think a successful (if far in the future) model of rail service in North America would look like this

Tier I - Free (or almost free) state owned regional railroads (like Metro North, Metra, VRE, Metrolink, etc.) providing service to commuters and other travelers in heavily populated areas on dedicated right of ways.
Tier II - Private railroads (kinda like Brightline), operating on federally owned rights of way that provide intercity services between populated areas (Northeast Corridor, Texas, SoCal, Florida, Pacific Northwest, Toronto-Montreal)
Tier III - Federal entities Amtrak & VIA operating long distances services between such Tier II corridors with the primary purpose of providing transit to underserved rural communities and offering scenic trips to tourists (think current Empire Buiilder, Sunset Limited, Cardinal, Canadian, etc.)

I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on that :)

Pretty good overall, I've never tried it in first class but I ride in business frequently and I find it to be (on the whole) prompt and comfortable. It is a little dated for a high speed train, but keep in mind that these next two years will be the end of the Acela 1. I don't know where you are coming from, but if you want to experience it at high speeds it usually hits that between Boston MA and New London CT.

I 100% agree with this. I have a driver's license and have been driving for over a year now. Half the people who are driving either shouldn't have a driver's license or on their cell phone while driving (yes even people way older than teenagers text and drive in anerica)
