Yea that was pretty much the case, and it was really out of character for my nation to be running an empire and whatnot considering it's commitment to democracy, republicanism and liberty. So I'm just dropping that and basically forming a system that's roughly inspired by the EU. The Lymurian Commonwealth would be the EU except it's basically dominated by New-Zealand cause NZ is the founding member and the only one with a veto power. Nations are welcome to come and go from the commonwealth (like brexit and the EU), but most of the commonwealth members are smaller nations that become so dependant on the commonwealth and by extension the Social Democracy for military protection and trade that they become effectively incapable of leaving cause they'd collapse overnight if they did. So rather than straight forward military imperialism, my nations doing this form of willing diplomatic and economic imperialism which seems a lot more in character for my nation.
