SHIPS FROM BENELUX NAVY TO SET SAIL FOR ITALY

In response to recent further developments, Benelux has once again offered to provide her support to European forces in their efforts to to defend European Union territory following the invasion of Yugoslavia by Greece, which Prime Minister Sophie Wilmes described as having "the potential to change the course of the continent". This time however, instead of deploying troops, Prime Minister Wilmes has authorised one Groeningen-class submarine and two De Zeven Provinciën-class destroyers to set sail for Italy, where they will be received at the Marina Millitaire Augusta naval base near Syracuse in the Italian Kingdom.

Prime Minister Wilmes stressed that these vessels are not sailing with the intention to attack Greece but to offer an "additional and robust line of defence" against potential, but unlikely Greek surprise attacks on Benelux's allies - Italy and France being the main concern. Wilmes described a phone conversation she had with General Konstantinos Floros of Greece as being "rather enjoyable and very frank". The Prime Minister stated she raised the potential for a Greek-Yugoslav peace plan or if that fails, a ceasefire, and General Floros was reportedly open to such an idea. Wilmes' optimism was not to last long as just a few days later negotiations stalled between Greece and Yugoslavia, and no agreement was reached.

The vessels being sent are some of the most advanced in the entire Royal Navy. The Groeningen-class submarine is nuclear-powered, and took just over twelve years to develop and has the capacity to unleash up-to thirty cruise missiles at a range of more than 2,400 kilometres. These De Zeven Provinciën-class ships were optimized for antiaircraft warfare, but they also have weapons on-board capable of attacking surface and submarine targets, for example: the RGM-84F Harpoon missile and Mk. 46 torpedoes, as well as the ability to fire cruise missiles from its 40-cell vertical launching system.
