Bomoko wrote:Chairman Nguyen: Well, Buddhism is not a proselytising religion like that of the white man’s faith (Christianity). You won’t find Indochinese attempts to influence Iranians into becoming Buddhists. Although this brings up an interesting conversation of cultural exchange. Many Indochinese would be curious to see Iran’s people and culture, as I’m sure will be the case vice versa after this visit. How about a cultural exchange programme allowing Indochinese & Iranian universities to form agreements allowing each others students to study for a year in each others’ respective nations.

[ Empress Farah Pahlavi ] "I love the idea but I don't think it goes far enough. I believe that artists should also be exchanged and maybe even Iranian channels and programs could enter your television , if your people would enjoy that."

[ Iranian actions had nothing to do with the recent actions of China and it's actors on the Asian scene. Iranian investors have been in negotiations with the goverment of Hong Kong for quite some time. ]

Power to the People

With her power in Congress firmly secure, President Santiago thought she was safe. However her popularity has actually been losing since her peak at the middle of the conservative collapse. Many Filipinos have begun thinking it was too convenient. In order to boost her falling popularity she began the first of her reforms. She brought to the floor of Congress a Bill which would try to end the constant blackouts in the Philippines. The bill would allocate 1 Billion Dollars however over a time of 10 years to go up to 5 Billion Dollars. The Bill would order the construction of Power Plants all around the country. Construction in areas hard hit by the blackouts will be prioritized. As well the revamping of current Power Plants. Once again Power Plants that blackout frequently will be prioritized.Tax Breaks will be given to electric companies to build more and new power plants. If the company begins construction of two power plants they will see a 3% tax break, and a 2% rise in tax break for each two power plants that are constructed. In Order to pay for the sharp rise, the Corporate Tax rate is being raised from 34% to 40%. For individuals who earn over 8,000,000 Pesos they would see their taxes rise from +30% of the excess to +40% of the excess. For those in 2,000,000 to 8,000,000 pesos range their +27% in excess will see a rise to +35% in excess. It would also add a 5% tariff on Tar Coal imports, and 2% tariff on plastic. The bill was quite controversial in Congress. With nearly a week of debates. The Conservative Coalition protests claiming it would hurt the country. Inside the newly formed Liberal Conservative Party their was intense debates. The party was fiercely split. With factions forming and leaders heading them. When it seemed like the unstable party would split. President Santiago went personally to Congress to give a speech. She relied her Liberal Coalition and convinced them that this would be the salvation of the Philippines. That only once the Philippines had power could to advance. They admitted it was bold but said the only people would changed the world were bold. The speech even moved some Conservatives. The bill narrowly passed 105-95. However the Liberal Conservative Party was still split on this issue with only 65% of the party sticking to Coalition Lines. Surprisingly however 3 Lagos-LDP members broke with party lines and voted in favor of the bill. With another victory under her belt she addressed the country in a live television speech. Saying this was a time of reform like she had promised in her election campaign. Finally ending the broadcast promising more was to come. However many in the country are considered. Namely the upper class. She is afraid of more of her reforms. She in essence has a lot of control over the country. Many have begun talking which each other...
