--- August 9th, 1968 ---
The bright colors of the sixties were quite evident in the hotel's lobby, with a wide variety of peach, beige and gold decorating the vast expanse at the entrance of the hotel. It was nearly completely empty, as it was not the season for vacations to this particular part of the Austrian Alps (skiers made up most of the customers during the actual season). But there was some life present, as could be seen by an Englishman, who leaned his right arm against the front desk while a briar pipe was held in his left hand, and Monsieur Jean, the desk clerk. An author by profession, the Englishman quietly observed the emptiness of the lobby until he spotted an elderly gentleman, probably in his middle to late 50's, sporting a purple sports coat over a red sweater in one of the lobby's many lounge chairs.
"Who's this interesting old fellow?", The Englishman inquired of Monsieur Jean. To his surprise, he seemed distinctly taken aback. "Don't you know?", he asked. "Don't you recognize him?". He did look familiar to the Englishman... "That's Mr. Moustafa himself, he arrived earlier this morning". This name was no doubt familiar to the more seasoned persons of that time.
As the Englishman looked over at the aging owner of the hotel, Mr. Moustafa lifted his glasses and returned the gaze back at the Englishman. The Englishman ackwardly dusted off his beige jacket and looked away. Mr. Zero Moustafa was, at one time, the richest man in Austria, and was still indeed the owner of the hotel.
"He often comes and stays a week or more, three times a year at least, but never in the season". Monsieur Jean signaled to the Englishman and leaned closer. "I'll tell you a secret... He takes only a single bed sleeping room without a bath in the rear corner of the top floor, and it's smaller than the service elevator..."
Intrigued, the Englishman went down the stairs and introduced himself to Mr. Moustafa, who, in turn, invited him to dine with him that evening. Once there, the two engaged in a most interesting conversation, and Mr. Moustafa began to tell his story, and how he came to own The Grand Budapest Hotel...

[ The 2 soldiers in the windows were shot dead quickly, though the other 2 downstairs stayed resolute and ready to defend. However they did not expect the grenades, the soldier behind the door dying from the explosion itself while the man in the corner was badly wounded, losing his lower right leg and ability to use his rifle, he fell in the corner unable to do anything but watch the door for the attackers, wishing he could continue his fight. ]
[ When the soldier from the recon company had been seen with his radio, one of the snipers took aim and shot at him as he was moving the handset away from his head, while the other two chose other targets on the bridge and both fired at them, hoping to cause panic with the sudden firing on the recon company. ]
[ A the shell hit a nearby building, the largely civilians began to panic at the realisation of their situation while the troops tried to get as many as possible being driven away to the south and east and another 2 sections were instructed to begin setting up a last defence in the streets. ]

As the shots from the house stopped,4 soldiers lined up by the door and kicked it in before throwing a grenade inside to make sure theres no survivors. The comfortation had taken out three men from the first suprise along with wounding one from a ricochet bullet. The armoured vehicles behind them reloaded their machine guns and begun to move up again as the Anti-Tank Field Guns continued to fire continuously one after the other into the city, lacking much coordination.
The defending snipers had taken out 5 soldiers of the recon company before the soldiers hid behind cover, keeping their heads low. As the firing subsided a bit,a soldier peaked his head above cover only to be blown away by the bullet of the sniper. A WWI officer and his second in command picked up a rifle without a bayonet and stuck a helmet on it while the second in command took out a small mirror and looked towards the direction of where the sniper shots had come from, awaiting for one of the snipers to fire their gun so their gun muzzle can be seen. Hiding a table,a young man picked up his field phone and requested the setup of artillery out of his own panic before being slapped by an officer and the phone taken away from him, giving the order for artillery with smoke shells to be prepared at the following coordinates: 54.027094, 23.994194

UAL-UAL, OGADEN, ABISSINIA - 22 NOVEMBER 1934
Ual-Ual; a small Ethiopian Oasis and town located in the middle of the desert of the Somali Ogaden, a territory of the Empire of Abyssinia. At first glance, nothing more than another impoverished town in the middle of an impoverished nation, however alongside the small town lies an equally small Italian military base. Consisting of about 60 Dubat Somalis, the Ual-Ual Camp was constructed in the utmost secrecy along with another base in nearby Uarder in 1930 to ensure some form of Italian military presence in Ethiopia and, in particular, the Ogaden. Although technically part of Ethiopia, the base was seen as being in Italian borders, despite being over 80 miles from the border separating Italian Somaliland and Abyssinia. However, the Ogaden was a sort of neutral buffer zone, and due to a lack of surveying the border has been very undefined.
Seeking to clear up confusion about the topography of the area and also working to try to clear out the border, the Abyssinian government under Emperor Haile Selassie II previously contracted an Anglo-Ethiopian surveying team to explore the desert and map it thoroughly. Setting out sometime in the middle of November, on November 22nd the surveyors run across the oasis of Ual-Ual and the Italian camp stationed there. Almost immediately alerting the nearest Ethiopian military base, a massive force of over 1,000 Ethiopian militiamen arrive at Ual-Ual overnight, accompanied by 3 fitaurari. The fitaurari, members of an elite class of military-political commanders, are tasked by the Ethiopian government to ask the Dubats within the walls of the camp to withdraw from the area as it has been found to be well within the Ethiopian boundary. One of the fitaurari, a tall and slender African man adorned in the typical dressing of Ethiopian nobility steps in front of the Ethiopian camp outside of the Italian garrison and attempts to formally appeal to the Dubats to leave.
Fituarari: "Men of the Italian garrison at Walwal! I am a member of the Ethiopian government and, at the moment, an emissary of his Majesty, Emperor of Ethiopia Haile Selassie II. On behalf of the Ethiopian government, I am coming to you today to demand the withdraw of the Italian and Somali garrison here to an Italian garrison within Italian Somaliland proper. The establishment here and its occupation by Italian troops is not only a violation of Ethiopian sovereignty, but a threat to Ethiopia's internal peace and the peace between the Italian and Ethiopian Empires. I ask again, please withdraw all military presence from Walwal and the Ogaden at once."
The Somali NCO, dressed in typical Dubat uniform, gives no response. Instead, the fituarari waits in silence staring down the guards of the garrison as the NCO gets on the camp's radio in order to message Captain Cimmaruta, the Italian commander of the larger base at nearby Uarder. Only about 12 miles away, the communication lines are solid but unreliable, however they discuss the situation.
- Jaajuumow Cays: "Hello, Captain Cimmaruta! This is Jaajuumow Cays, commander of the Dubat garrison at Ual-Ual."
Captain Cimmaruta: "Yes hello! Hello?"
Jaajuumow Cays: "Yes, Captain Cimmaruta! We have been besieged by an Ethiopian force who have appeared at Ual-Ual. We estimate there to be about 1,100 Ethiopian militiamen here along with some noblemen. They have asked us to withdraw at once, however we have refused to do so until we get an order to by our officers. Are we to retreat?"
Captain Cimmaruta: "Been besieges by an Ethiopian force... withdraw... negative, do not withdraw. Remain there and we will dispatch reinforcements to back up your position tonight. "
Jaajuumow Cays: "Alright, we will hold our position."
At once, Captain Cimmaruta works on gathering a force a size of a battalion to send to Ual Ual to help defend the garrison and route the Ethiopians. The Ethiopians set up a formal camp outside of the garrison awaiting a response from the defenders inside, unknowing of the oncoming reinforcements speeding up to the area in trucks and a few halftracks recently shipped to Somaliland.
UAL-UAL, OGADEN, ABISSINIA - 23 NOVEMBER 1934
The Italian force had arrived under the cover of darkness, setting up positions just outside of the Italian camp. The Ethiopians awake to the scene of a massive amount of proper Italian soldiers and quickly scramble to their positions, most armed with nothing but old breech-loading rifles or even simple melee weapons. A standoff occurs in the most literal sense, with Italian machine gunners aiming their guns at the Ethiopian camp and Ethiopian sharpshooters taking up positions behind rocks however not a shot is fired. Early in the morning after sunrise another Anglo-Ethiopian surveying team arrives at the area, this time dispatched to survey the border between British Somaliland and Ethiopia. Armed with a few pistols, the team attempt to protest the standoff by trying to talk the Italians into withdrawing, however the British members of the team withdraw. The Ethiopians remain however and join the ranks of the militiamen to the north of the base, staring down the Italians. For days this standoff continues with no real action, however in order to keep the Ethiopians on edge an Italian biplane fighter is dispatched to fly over the enemy on two separate occasions. Showing no signs of withdrawing, the situation endures into the end of the month.
