For some reason many commonwealth countries love her majesty an her family except some if her own people. Which is a travesty. What we seam to forget was that it was her line that stopped the Spanish an Nazi forces from ever setting foot on this fair land. Obviously in modern times questions of whether the monarchy is relevant has motivated Prince William and Duchess Kate to drag the monarchy kicking and screaming in the 21st Century.
Britain has always been a ancient superpower and its Queens and Kings have solidified us into the very fabric of history.
Beyond a symbol for the nation to rally around, I wouldn't say the Royal family stopped the march of fascism in Europe. Indeed, the abdicated Edward VIII and his wife Wallis Simpson were pretty much confirmed Nazi sympathisers. (Hence why they were shuffled off to the Bahamas during WWII.)
In fact, I'd say that very ability to be a living 'national symbol', a breathing link to our heritage, is the greatest strength of our monarchy. Our constitutional arrangements would survive without a monarch (it has done before) and our tourism wouldn't be too affected; but the focal point of our national identity and cultural values would be irrevocably shifted and altered and, arguably, spoiled.
Other nations rally to their flags weakly woven chords of coloured cloth to represent their nation, their values and their heritage. (Not that there's anything wrong with that.) Here in the U.K., the majority of us but by no means all see our monarch as fulfilling that role: not a person so much as an apolitical platform; a showpiece of 'British virtues and values' whether the monarch themselves is proactive in that respect or latently assumed so.

I must say, although I do not interfere in region affairs that I'm glad that Canada doesn't play the invader / defender game.
Afters years in the game I find each year how really idiotic that game part-mechanism is (& i'm saying that, while I'm fully aware that we have mutual defender allies).
