Basileus elysium

Founding of the Capital, Drakkulesti
The pseudo capital of Basilea, the first city of Basileus Elysium has held its importance due to its large production of silver and its temporary established government location of the old estate house. However due to expansion of Basileus Elysium’s borders Basilea has lost its central location within the nation, along side this the gold trade within Al’Antum has become the most lucrative trade out of all the cities especially due to its coastal location as well as being set along the Golden river which leads into the Fzar river.
Imineif and his created council known as the City planning board, these set about the planning and establishment of a new city, one set at the mouth of the Fzar river surrounded by vineyards with a style not seen within the boarders leading to an architectural enlightenment, the use of arches decorated with gilded mosaics and paintings commissioned by the City planning board buildings adorned with tiered slightly flattened domes. The most impressive of which being the new government building, colossal in size, three main domes with one central and slightly elevated created the basis of the build topped with a tower looming over the city which itself was topped with a dome and peak. The main atrium of the build was comprised with four main pillars representing the founding cities of Basileus Elysium each with the city names engraved onto its own plaque. The northern pillar representing Basilea decorated with a silver mosaic along with a quarter of the dome roof dedicated with paintings of the original founding of the kingdom, the eastern pillar representing Al’Antum embellished with golden mosaic and its roof quarter dedicated to the rich trade of the city. The western pillar dedicated to Qaffar furnished in a copper mosaic with its quadrant depicting the dragon in the skies above the city as well as Azzem and a band of knights facing the dragon. Finally, the southern pillar representing the newly opened capital of Drakkulesti adorned with the triad of gold, silver, and copper mosaics with the final segment of the dome depicting the unity of the kingdom and its two founders Azzem and Imineif. The centre piece of the atrium dome consisted of a large circular stained-glass panel with a huge thurible hanging in the centre emitting the smoke of burning incenses cross the atrium.
Three main wings protruded from the atrium, the western wing known as the royal chambers held the housing of Imineif and Azzem filled with lavish decorations. The eastern wing dedicated to administration of the country with notable rooms such as the royal library and chamber of commerce. The last northern wing held the grand council room consisting only of a large circular table surrounded by many ornate wooden chairs for debate and diplomacy, above hung the skeleton of the dragon which terrorised Qaffar, wings spread and mouth ajar.
Within the city itself many important institutions were also established such as the University of Basileus Elysium, a think tank of the nation’s best minds. the Imperial Elysium arsenal created to stockpile weaponry and technology of war in the case of foreign aggression, as well as the Imperial bank and mint dedicated to the creation of a national currency and handling of taxation along with the chamber of commerce.

Hello everyone I'm new here hope we can be good friends for quite sometime.

An eve at the Samara
The founding of Seglanos

Note: skip this post if you've read my other "founding post". I've fudged my claim and accidentally tried to found my nation on someone else's claim, thus prompting a rewrite. This post, as well as its follow-up, are basically adapted versions of last week's posts. Sorry about all that.

The moonlight shone brilliantly upon the sleeping city of Ardunum. Only at night could one enjoy the peace and quiet, as during the day the city was flooded in a sea of traders, miners and free men. Grand Duke Arthan IV strolled along the river Samara, pondering about past and present.

At dawn, sulphur would fill caravans that would carry the mineral from the mines to the markets and harbours, to be sold and traded. The deposits were a source of moderate wealth and added to the city’s strategic importance. The fortress guaranteed the safety of trade along the river, as well as the Imperial Highway.

The Kostuan Empire had a profound impact upon the development of the city. They had found tribal lands and had forged them a capital. Although the Empire liked to proclaim they were doing the Seglanoi a favour, their heel was crushing, as hordes of men and women were sent to work in the mines. The mines now still functioned according to the principle of Familiaris. Workers were paid in food, clothing and housing as a reward for their efforts. The Kostuan nobility they once served were long gone, however. After the decline of the Empire, powerful traders had swiftly seized the titles and rich mines for themselves.

The druids who had maintained order had fled Ardunum, in fear of the Taint. A century of civil war ensued, in which merchants strove for power over the sulphur mines. War and plague ravaged the lands and the century would become known as the Wrath of Camulos (1), as they surely had angered the god some way.

Finally, after the disease had subsided, a merchant noble had sought the druids and with their aid had seized control of the city. The Druidic Conclave crowned him Arthan I, Grand Duke of Seglanos, as he declared it the will of Segala (2). From here on out, the Conclave would appoint the successors of the duchy in a system of elective monarchy. "Oh, such glorious days those must have been," Arthan thought. How he longed to be as celebrated as his namesake was, as a bringer of prosperity.

A Sign from Bidoent
Expansion 1

Arthan made his way back to the citadel, heavily pondering upon the future of his realm. The Druidic Conclave demanded an expansion of his realm, as they wished to protect the Seglanoi minorities that were persecuted in the far southern polities. He knew of the persecution all too well. Out of spite for Ardunum’s wealth, or out of hatred for the Seglanoi religion - or both - his fellow men were either discriminated against, enslaved or executed. It was the Empire all over again.

Yet, the Conclave would surely have foreseen the outcome of this expansion? A growing realm meant a growth in power for the nobles of said realm, who would surely strive to expand their influence over their young duke. It was the sole reason he and his predecessors hadn’t yet annexed the small realms to the immediate north and south om Ardunum, to keep the nobles landless and the traders poor. Furthermore, couldn’t this all be just an excuse to enlarge the druids’ own might, who thought to use him as a mere pawn? Was that why they had chosen him?

The night’s watch saluted him as he entered the citadel. He walked them by, lost in thought, as he made his way to the nemeton (1).

It was better not to invoke the ire of the mighty Conclave. Who knew what those secretive priests were up to, with their strange magic and all. He had never seen the druids perform any magic, but like any Seglanon he had heard the tales of mighty runesmiths who came to bring peace to Seglanos in their time of need.

Before going to bed, he prayed and made an offer to Bidoent (2), to ask for wisdom to come to him in his dreams. And wisdom Bidoent did bring. It was clear as day. Arthan dreamed of great fires which consumed the manors of local nobles, weak men who meant nothing in the light of the Grand Duchy of Seglanos, for their conquerors carried with them the blessing of Camulos (3), to sew death, disease and darkness wherever they found opponents. The mighty fire blazed all the way to the coast of the Black Bay and at once, his purpose became clear.

As the bleeding sun had barely risen beyond the hills, Arthan awoke in such a state of frenzy that he didn’t think to dress before addressing his guard.

“Summon the Council, we shall have war!”

Angular sends an envoy (1/3)

Some time after the war with the Coalition ended, both city leaders and the council were united in Anora’s palace. A pressing matter had arised: an envoy had come from what he said was a city called Angular that was, according to his words, located in the westernmost part of the center island, Athran. He came here, he claimed, in the name of his leader, Konra, and said that this city wanted a place in the Commonwealth.

None of the cities had still explored their islands completely: almost all the west of Athran remained in the shadows for them. Given the rough desertic terrain, exploration was hard and lengthy. In the north the scene was similar: the thick jungle was making it hard for the hunurans and the newly settled sarakans from the capital. Nonetheless, they had explored almost every coastline from the sea and no city was seen by any sailor nor fisherman.

-How is an inland city so big as you claim prospering in so harsh lands? -asked Unro.

The envoy, who had been answering up until that moment very concise and clear didn’t falter:

-We are living mainly from the hunt, sir. But there is also an oasis, where we found some cattle -he quickly added when he saw the suspicious eyes of the council members-. I am not supposed to tell you more about it except you accept, I’m afraid.

-I see. To truly think about this we require to see the city -informed Aurtha-. If you can’t even tell us about it, we have no choice but to say no, to say the least.

Those last four words were added almost silently, but perfectly audible for the envoy. It was a threat, and the yuannon, afraid of committing mistakes, used his next words carefully and with the intent to leave peacefully.

Angular sends an envoy (2/3)

-I will tell that to my lord, miss -he said-. I would also like, if it’s no problem to you, if I could get a list of other requirements we would need for you to consider our integration.

-First of all -Unro said without much thought-, knowing your leader will be absolutely necessary. We definitely won’t welcome a whole new city into our country which we don’t know who leads, or what he thinks. Communication is an absolute requirement.

-Knowing your ideals and your people is going to be a necessity too -added Yuoru, a member of the council-. We can’t have yuannons roaming around who want to form a different kind of place and not one of prosperity for our people, nor barbarians running amok in our streets.

After everybody gave it some thought, Unro spoke again.

-That is it, Urkas. You can now leave to your city. We expect you to come back with good news -he said-. An invitation, for example. You can sleep in this palace today, and supplies will be given to you for your journey home tomorrow. You are dismissed.

The envoy quickly made a reverence and left.

-This may pose a pretty big problem -said Aurtha when the purple-skinned yuannon left.

-It does seem pretty fishy -agreed Urno.

Everyone left the meeting thinking. It was a matter no one had thought would ever arise. They had all agreed in previous meetings, when discussing their plans to occupy other territories in the islands, that the surging of a new city in a place where there hadn’t been a city before was impossible.

Around a week after that, the envoy returned to Anora to deliver what the pink seasians had asked for: an invitation to the mysterious oasis city signed by their supposed leader Konra. An answer had to be carried back to that city: the commonwealth would send a delegation.

The delegation had 3 yuannons in it, each representing one of the commonwealth’s cities: Anra, admiral of the combined forces; Uma, the librarian of Anora’s palace; and Aros, a skilled hunter from the jungle near Hunura. The envoy had left indications when he brought the invitation on how to arrive to the city.

-We now have to follow these rocky terrain -told Anra to the other two.

They were moving by foot: there had no horses. A boat had taken them as close as they could to the inland city, but they would have to walk through the dessert for some distance: around 100 kilometers. This would take approximately 24hs. with some stops to eat, drink, and rest a little. But they wanted to arrive to the city with a clear mind, so sleeping was in the schedule. This meant they would arrive the following day.

Angular sends an envoy (3/3)

-We still have around 4 hours of light -informed Uma-. We should be arriving to a zone with caves in about 3hs., so we should probably stop to sleep there.

-I agree -said the hunter.

The group advanced through the rocky scenery fast, as they were used to the rough terrain and it was a pretty flat area, as were almost all islands in the area. They arrived at the discussed caves as Uma had anticipated, and they set up camp in one of them. They had encountered one or two snakes in their path, and a lot of spiders, scorpions and bugs, but most of them ran away from them. The provisions they had brought were enough for the three of them to eat and even leave enough for an anticipated return, in the likely case that the city was a made up place.

The night was peaceful. The dessert was silent and there wasn’t too much wind, so the three of them slept soundly. They did take the precaution to sleep in turns, just in case bandits or alike showed up, but nothing happened. Before the sun came up again, the travelers got up and continued their path under the blue moon. They arrived at Angular 1 hour after the sun rose.

-It does exist -admitted Aros when they were able to see the city and the oasis.

-It’s actually surprising that the envoy was right -said Arna-. Unexpected, yet welcome. A whole new city could really help a lot to the development of our country.

Uma stay silent, but she showed no signs of disagreement. After around ten minutes, the group arrived at the gate of the city, that was surrounded by a wall of sandstone.

-Who is it? -Asked a guard.

The yuannon was holding a wooden spear with a stone tip. It certainly worse than Arna’s tin sword, but it was definitely able to kill with it.

-We come from Anora -anounced Arna-. We were invited by your leader Konra to see your city.

The guard left his post and returned some minutes after with the envoy.

-Welcome -he said-. Let me show you the way to Konra’s place.

The delegation followed him for around two to three minutes. The city wasn’t big nor fancy, but it seemed to have a lot of population.

-It is really well protected -whispered Aros to Uma, who were both staying a little behind their guide-. There are a lot of guards.

-I don’t know if it’s protection -answered the yuaness-. As we saw in our little trip, there is almost nothing to worry in this place. I have yet to see a worker, too. We’ve only seen guards since we entered.

It was a little concerning, but the group kept following the envoy until they arrived to the city leader’s house.

-Please, come in -a big yuannon told them.

He was really tall, almost two meters.

-I’m Konra -he said-. Welcome to my city.

The envoy left them alone. The delegation stayed discussing their matters with Konra. They ultimately came to an agreement: they would allow the city to join the commonwealth only for some time, time in which they would be carefully observed. Three days later, Konra signed an agreement that allowed Angular to join the Commonwealth of the Pink Seas as an “observated city” for a month.

I'm not very good at story stuff, however what basically went down for my thing to be founded was some cultist people with magic masks became known when their island was found by outsiders, who weren't very welcomed because the masks require souls to maintain immortality and their special powers gained from such afronts to nature. And the whole story, which was provided by an odd creature with wings and horns who seemed to made of the shadows themselves, was that a large group of pirates and the like shipwrecked on the island and found the masks. They gained abilities beyond the powers of the average person and 200 later, when they sacked a ship with a calendar that said it was a full two hundred years since they had found the masks. And as such they realized they were immune to death by aging. They knew they were not completely immortal because plenty had died between. And the rest doesn't matter except their souls started getting eaten by the masks for a little bit because they had not found out that they needed to feed them souls often.

Countrywide unrest

After a week of the integration of the city of Angular to the Commonwealth, things were not going good. There were many discussions between Konra, the new city leader, and the previous two leaders: Urno and Aurtha. The council, although trying to remain neutral, could not help but lean towards the original ones. And as the delegation that was sent to inspect Angular had expected, the discussions were mainly about the treatment of citizens.

Angular had extreme policies: freedom was really limited and most peasants had close to none economic freedom. It seemed that Konra had risen to his position in power in the city just fighting and with shady strategies. The council and the city leaders were disgusted with this, so they called Konra to Anora to discuss this matter.

They were all sitting in a round table, as equals. almost no one stood out, as most yuannons prefered to be comfortable rather than looking fancy. The leaders were indistinguishable from members of the council and viceversa. The only one who looked different was Anra, as she was dressed really light and had a sharp spear behind her chair.

The room looked really bright. The old palace had a pretty open infrastructure and windows were abundant. As they were on the top floor, the ceilings were made out of glass and the sun could be seen near one of its borders.

-Your city is a prison, Konra -Aurtha confronted the new leader-. We cannot simply stand by while you exploit your citizens for your own benefit and prosperity.

-They benefit from their work too, you know -he answered-. I only tell them how to.

-You don’t tell them, you force them -continued Aurtha-. I have yet to see a single yuannon from your city in ours, while all our subjects have reported seeing signs of maltreatment in yours.

-You don’t even let them leave your city except for the ones that have to tend to the cattle in the oasis -added Arna-. That’s what your walls are for, keeping them in.

-I feel insulted -said Konra-. And you seem to believe these lies your people tell you?

-I’m severely inclined to do so, yes -answered him Urno-. They don’t have any reason to lie.

-And why would I have any? -inquired Konra.

-You clearly want to stay in the commonwealth because it would grant you many resources and benefit you greatly -spoke Urno-. And what you are doing goes straight against our reason to create this country: it is called commonwealth because we seek the common prosperity of our cities and subjects. If you don’t treat them correctly, I’m afraid we’ll have to intervene.

-You have no right to do so -said angrily Konra-. I asked to join, and I can decide against my own decision whenever I want.

The big yuannon had stood up. He had an intimidating aura, but the council members and leaders did not feel any threat, as there were more than ten guards inside the room. Anra, in response to his actions, also stood up and casually grabbed her spear. She did not seem to be in any martial stance, although her knowledge of martial arts had by now greatly surpassed those of the other people in the room.

-I’m afraid you don’t -said Aurtha calmly-. Your city is now part of this country and we will tend to it’s problems. The main problem is now corruption and we will not tolerate the disguised slavery that you have running there. If you do not back down on these policies, we will remove you from your position and assign a more capable leader.

Konra, heavily upset, punched the table and left the room hastily. No one stopped him, as they thought that in his city, none would support him if they announced that he would be replaced. Arna and some other council members did not agree. They wanted to take action and rapidly imprison the yuannon.

-We can’t do that yet -Unro told her-. If we do so and the people of his city truly like him, we will definitely not have a nice situation in our hands.

-In my opinion -she answered-. We won't have one either way.

The liberation of Angular

Unfortunately for the rulers of the commonwealth, the yuannon that was sent to replace Konra in Angular was murdered, as predicted by Anra. They now had to make a hard decision.

-We have two choices -said Aurtha-. Either we take action and take the city by force, or we ignore this matter. This last path would go against more than just our citizens welfare, as it will also contradict our claim in this islands by allowing a city to stay out of our rule.

-Isn’t there an intermediate choice -asked Yaka, a member of the council.

-Like what? -refuted Yuoru, another member-. There’s no middle path. I also don’t believe there is even a choice. Of we don’t take this city for ourselves, this could pose a huge problem. We can’t just have an enemy, or at least a hostile, so near one of our main cities.

-I agree -said Anra-. This would also prove very beneficial as it would give real combat experience to the combined forces.

The decision was unanimous: the military would forcefully take the city.

-But what will we do to the people that stand by Konra?

-Killing them would be barbarous and unwise.

-I don’t think we can’t put them in prison either. The palace prison is still buried underground and if we leave them in the city it wouldn’t be hard for them to escape.

-Then casting them out is our only option. We shall exile them out of our islands. We’ll give them boats and supplies and make sure they sail towards the continent.

This last proposition everyone liked, and so it was.

Two days after this meeting, the combined forces set sail in the fishing boats of their fellow pink seasinas and the few available small transport boats that allowed them to sail from one island to the other. They arrived almost a day after to the desert, and after two days, the army arrived to Angular. When they were close enough to the city, they prepared. They had brought big pieces of wood to use as shields, just in case the angularians had bows. They confirmed they were right when their wooden shields were struck by arrows as they slowly approached the city under them.

The two 2500 yuannon strong army advanced forward with no casualties, arriving at the city gates fast. It took them around one hour to take the big stone doors that, luckily, weren’t that thick. When inside of the city, the forces entered slowly and in formation. Anra’s orders were undisputed and everyone trusted them, as she had been training with them since they all enlisted. The poorly trained angularian defenders, brutes and slow like bad street thugs, were rapidly overrun as the combined forces, trained and more numerous, advanced forward.

When half of the city garrison had either been injured or killed, the remaining forces surrendered. With one battle won, Anra left most of the army tending to the wounded and taking care of their defeated enemies while she advanced with a few tens of yuannon straight to Konra’s house. They found him surrounded by the last of his yuannon, and both sides engaged in battle. The battle between Anra and Konra was left heavily ingrained in their soldiers memory, as it was a fight between their best fighters.

Anra started the battle running forward with her lance. It was deflected by Konra’s hands as he moved aside fast. He did not have time to counterattack however, because Anra quickly moved back and forward again, while moving her wrists to thrust her enemy. Konra was, again, able to dodge her attack, this time by jumping backwards. Still in the offensive, Anra thrusted again, and then a third time. This last time, Konra was able to pick a tin sword from the ground, dropped by one of Anra’s soldiers in the fight. The swords the pink seasians had learned to forge were thin and around 80 centimeters long. It was sharp only from one side and slightly curved.

The big yuannon now attacked with his weapon in a horizontal swing. Anra quickly moved her hands and consequently her spear to block his attack. She was slightly pushed back, but maintained her foot. Konra, seeing her arm unguarded, moved his sword fast and attacked with an upward motion. Anra let go the spear with her attacked hand. Konra, now noticing she wasn’t protecting her stomach, thrusted forward with his sword. Anra had to jump back to avoid it, grabbing her lance again with both hands.

She now was at a distance in which her weapon could reach him and his couldn’t. She thrusted forward again. Konra tried this time to divert it with his sword, but she stopped mid attack, allowing his sword to divert nothing and pass through without deflecting anything. With his sword where he didn’t want it and mid-swing, Konra was unable to stop her second thrust. He bled to death five minutes after this fight.

A Stolen Scroll - Part Two

A thunderous chorus of hoofbeats echoed down the cobblestone road as some six hooded riders and their steeds raced eastward towards the morning sun, ignoring a group of surprised commoners filling in a worn section of the Imrama-Corym highway. The lead rider wore a deathly black robe with its hood drawn over their head. Behind the leader, the remaining five riders maintained an arrowhead formation such that none of the riders needed to fear kicked-up stones striking their faces. Not far from the formation stood one of the few farms that inhabited the mountainous terrain east of Monkspoint. A dusty path branched from the main road and winded around the diminutive brush, feeding into a dirt clearing where a ramshackle hut sat alone. Its sole inhabitant was nowhere to be seen, but that did not seem to impact the robed figures, their horses racing past the junction without slowing down. No, the person of interest ran much further ahead, potentially taking their pursuers up into the harsh Eternals should they dare to maintain the chase.

Several hours passed. The lead rider finally extended their left hand in the air, bringing the cadence to a slow trot and finally a stop. "Dismount and secure!" A sharp, commanding female voice rang from the lead rider as she lowered her hood. The woman's windswept black hair rustled with the mountain breeze as two cold eyes watched the eastern horizon. Behind her, the five robed riders took their horses off the road and into the coarse, montane vegetation. Besides the sounds of hooves crushing grass, silence prevailed over the search party's members as they began to disembark their mounts. The blanched woman reached for her waterskin and released it from its clasp. "We have only minutes to spare. Eat quickly; the bastard will outride us if we waste our precious time." The frigid water met her lips once she made her statement. Chilled over the past several hours by the wind, the enigmatic woman's drink left much to be desired, but it would have to suffice; knowing their adversary ahead, any spurious mana use was unacceptable. To the eastern horizon, somewhere among the barren saddle through which the antique road winded, the College thief awaited their last fight.

The remaining afternoon ride brought the riders closer to the base of the Eternals. Here, the basalt road became interspersed with webs of alpine dirt, grass, and upended rocks from centuries of neglect. The conifers grew shorter and broader than back home, having adapted to the poor, thin topsoil. Stocky, twisted tree roots broke through the earth beside the path, though in recent weeks small groups of laborers had cleared the worst of those overlapping the trail. Their efforts, while helpful in stopping horses from tripping and bringing down their riders, did not leave much confidence in the restoration project orchestrated by the King. The group of robed mages slowed their steeds to a trot as they approached the first bend in the route, for its surface threatened any uncontrolled caravan with a crash into one of the aging trees. Ahead, as the lead mage brought her horse to a halt, the deceptively peaceful snowcaps of a familiar landmark met the apprehensive eyes of every combatant in her party. No matter how well-acclimated any mage might be to the thin, freezing atmosphere, the Eternals held a reputation in Corym and the College for taking the lives of even the best-prepared travelers. Especially during the winter months, the Eternals snowed severely enough that trekkers would lose orientation and sight of the ground, leading to an inevitable lethal fall into one of the mountain ravines or down the steep rocky slopes. "Stay alert and ready yourselves. You will die if you don't." The lead mage ordered, her voice softer but authoritative and determined as her mount continued to step over fallen forest debris and shattered rocks. The evening sun illuminated the mages' features, casting their shadows into the old-growth beside them. "Salthas should be no more than an hour ahead. Keep an eye on your flanks."

Abaertstol

Abaertstol is created!

The Grand Duchy of Abaertstol is a small nation of 5 million in Arkonos. The nation is home to very practical and civil people. The economy is strong and diverse, top products include; cheese, books, and baskets. The official currency is the Koneliek, many jobs make an average wage of 12.5 Kn an hour and the average workday is 8 in the morning to 4 in the afternoon. At 5 many people have Soter Time, which is like tea time, but with a drink called Soter, which is made of boiled water, pine needles, and salt. A workweek is only 5 days, with the weekends off. This is because many Avartans believe in traditional gods, and use the weekends to worship them, as they have done for hundreds of years. The national animal is the Avarta Wolf, which has been roaming the region for hundreds of years. The Avarta Wolf is on the brink of extinction due to the constant hunting of them. It has barely any influence on Arkonos and even less on the world. Abaertsol is very secretive and has many man-made walls and barriers to keep invaders out. The people of Abaertstol speak Abartaloturese, a language in a family home of thousands of other languages from far away. Traditional cuisine includes, Lambonstu (Lamb and Salmon Soup), Usmusch (Salmon cooked in two halves of a hollowed-out log), and Kekaote (Slice of grain bread with nouya cheese wrapped in thinly sliced salmon). The cuisine consists of many ingredients native to the land, for example, grains like barley and wheat, cheese from goats and cows, salmon and other fish, and pine needles and logs. The people practice a religion based on deities, like Roman, Norse and Greek mythologies. They follow Umusjij, the god of earth, the king of everything. His wife is Jornh, the goddess of the sky. They believed that the moon was the residence of these deities. and the sun was the underworld. When you died, you either went to the Latjunhagraj (Underworld), to forever being tortured by Latjunha, or you could go to the Tejtigraj (Heaven), to live in peace with the gods.
