Glad you're back, anyway.

Anyone going to participate in this?

OVERVIEW

N-Day is an opportunity for nations to come together and exchange nuclear weapons in a fiery Armageddon of mutually assured destruction.

To Participate

  1. Once registration opens, you can create or join a Faction. Nations outside a Faction can't attack or be attacked. You can join a Faction when you're ready and leave when you're not (to stay safe).

  2. When the event begins, nations will be assigned a random Specialty and begin to accumulate Production. You will now be able to spend Production, fire nukes and deploy shields.

  3. Watch your nation automatically generate Production at a rate of 1 every 2 minutes. Use it to build Nukes and Shield.

  4. Launch Nukes at other nations and use Shield to shoot down Nukes that are launched at you.

Tactics

The simplest way to play N-Day is to join whichever Faction seems most fun and start targeting Nukes at its enemies while shooting down anything incoming. Your Faction page's icon bar shows everything you need to know, including who's targeting anyone in your Faction, and who your fellow Faction members are targeting.

Attacking: Step by Step

  1. On your Production screen, spend some of your Production to build Nukes. These go into your Stockpile.

  2. On another nation's Nuke page, click/tap the TARGET button and select the number of Nukes to use.

  3. Once Targeted, it takes 10 minutes for your Nukes to reach a READY state (3 for Intel Specialists). Note that your Targeted page is public: All nations can see who is targeting whom.

  4. When your Targeted Nukes are ready, click/tap LAUNCH.

  5. Your Nukes are now categorized as Launches for you and Incoming for your target. Launched Nukes take 3-5 minutes to reach their target. When they do, they earn Strikes for you and inflict Radiation on the target, which reduces their rate of Production. This also earns Score for your Faction and reduces the enemy Faction's Score.

Defending: Step by Step

  1. On the Production screen, spend Production to build Shield.

  2. Find Launched Nukes to destroy. Your top priority is any Incoming Nukes launched at you. Secondarily, you may wish to target Incoming Nukes on anyone in your Faction (see your Faction's Incoming page), and also keep an eye on Targeted Nukes that may threaten you or your Faction in the near future.

  3. Click/tap DESTROY to deploy 1 Shield per Nuke.

Strategy

Strategically, it may be wise to avoid attacks on nations or Factions until you are confident of obliterating them, since this eliminates the possibility of counter-attack. Smaller-scale attacks, which damage but don't destroy an enemy, can lead to an escalating series of grudge-related nuclear exchanges.

On the other hand, targeting an enemy can be an effective warning. And it takes Nukes 10 minutes to be ready to launch, so you can't leave it too late.

Scoring

Each Nuke that reaches a target causes Radiation damage, which reduces the target's rate of Production generation and counts as a Strike for the attacker.

A Faction's Score is Strikes minus Radiation.

Duration

N-Day lasts for 24 hours, after which point, an Arms Control Agreement means that no Nukes can be launched. (In-flight nukes can still land, however.)

The "winner" is the Faction with the highest score; if, that is, nuclear war can be said to have a winner. Which we say it can. It's the Faction with the highest score.

FACTIONS

Once registration opens, Factions can be founded by a Regional Officer of any region. Any and all Regional Officers of that region can update the Faction's official text to issue instructions to Faction members.

Factions can be made open to all members, or restricted to the region's members only.

You can leave your Faction, which is a good way to stay safe if you're signing off for the night. However, you can only do this if you're not engaged with the enemy! That means:

  • You must not have any nukes targeted or launched at another nation; and

  • No nukes can be targeted or incoming on you.

Note that in practice, this can make it challenging to leave a Faction, since you may be frequently targeted.

While outside a Faction, you cannot be targeted, and do not generate any Production.

Before joining, it's worth making sure a Faction isn't currently under mass bombardment.

SPECIALTIES

Nations are randomly assigned a specialty.

Military Specialists build Nukes faster: They receive 50% more Nukes when converting Production.

Strategic Specialists build Shield faster: They receive 50% more Shield when converting Production.

Economic Specialists can accumulate more Production: Their production cap is four times larger than the other specialties.

Intel Specialists can finalize targets faster: Their targetted nukes reach READY in 3 minutes instead of 10. They have no Production advantages.

PRODUCTION
Non-WA nations automatically generate Production at a rate of 1 Production per 2 minutes, up to a maximum of 50 (200 for Econ Specialists).
WA nations automatically generate Production at a rate of 10 Production per 2 minutes, up to a maximum of 150 (600 for Econ Specialists).

Production can be spent on Nukes or Shield.

WA NATIONS
World Assembly members will accumulate Production 10x faster than non-WA members, and have their Production limits increased by 3x.
It is allowed to switch WA membership to receive this benefit for different nations, but (as per regular site rules) you are only allowed to have one nation in the WA at a time.
Keep in mind that if your Production is over the non-WA limit when you resign membership on a nation, the Production on that nation will decrease down to the limit (i.e. if you resign with 75 Production on a non-Econ nation, the Production will drop to 50).

We ask that you refrain from switching WA for N-Day purposes more than once every two minutes. You will not be punished for this, but it is against the spirit of this change to the event mechanics.

NUKES

Nukes are purchased with Production, kept in stockpile until ready, then targeted and launched at an enemy nation.

Launched Nukes take 3-5 minutes to reach their target. While in-flight, they can be shot down by any nation using Shield. If they're not, each Nuke generates 1% of Radiation in the target and earns 1 Strike for the attacker.

SHIELD

Shield can be used to knock out Launched Nukes. You can shoot down any in-flight Nukes regardless of who they are aimed at.

Locate in-flight Nukes under Launches or Incoming, and use the DESTROY button to eliminate them at a rate of 1 Shield per Nuke.

It is possible to waste Shield if multiple nations deploy Shield simultaneously to knock out the same Nukes.

TARGETING

Target a nation by viewing their Nuke page and clicking/tapping TARGET. You may then select how many Nukes to target from your Stockpile.

It takes a short time for a Targeted Nuke to reach a READY state, after which it may be launched. This is normally 10 minutes, but Intel Specialists are faster, finalizing targets in only 3 minutes.

If not launched after 1 hour, Targeted Nukes automatically return to your Stockpile.

RADIATION

Radiation is generated in a nation when it is struck by a Nuke.

Radiation proportionately reduces a nation's Production generation rate. For example, 20% Radiation reduces Production generation by 20%.

When a nation is 100% Radiated, it is destroyed and no longer able to launch any Nukes nor use any Shield.

Radiation is irreversible.

You can leave a Faction when irradiated, but this does not affect your Faction's score.

SCORE

A Faction's score measures strikes and radiation that occurred while those nations were a member. It is unaffected by nations joining or leaving the Faction.

Sangamonia

The Free Lands of Sangamonia, commonly called Sangamonia, are a loose confederation of communes in the former United States Midwest. Its borders are inexact, due to the individual territory controlled by each commune being highly variable and the disordered nature of the surrounding area, but it is near to the Combined Lake Area Syndicate of Chicago to the north and the agrarian city-states of the Plains to the west. The region controlled by the Free Lands is about 50,000 square miles. It has has an estimated population of 12,741,080. The confederation comprises of 150 communes and other associated communities.

Since the de facto collapse of the United States in 2050, Sangamonia, much like many of the other successor entities, has not attempted to play a large role in regional or world affairs. Since its neighbors are either friendly or unable to present a serious threat, there has been no reason to attempt to intervene in other events or expand power through force. Any expansion the confederation undergoes is done with the consent of the communities it incorporates, and the ideological basis for the system ensures power never becomes centralized enough for it to become a centralized empire.

Etymology

The name "Sangamonia" is derived from the Sangamon River, a tributary to the Illinois River around which the confederation is roughly centered. However, due to the decentralized nature of the confederation, it is uncommon for this name to be used to refer to the confederation and the territory it encompasses (in traditional "nation-state" parlance); rather, it is more often used to refer to the bio-region the communes occupy as a whole.

The standard way to refer to a citizen of one of the Sangamonian communes, barring reference to their specific origin, is as a "communalist."

History

The confederation was born from the ashes of the decayed United States, which was critically weakened in the 2050s due to a combination of extreme climate events, popular unrest, and military infighting. Much like the Puerto Rican self-management movement in the 2010s and 2020s, failure of traditional state apparatuses to respond effectively to the repeated devastation of climate collapse, combined with the destruction of state infrastructure which linked the nation together and allowed such intervention, resulted in social anarchist "black bloc" mobilization to meet people's needs when the state would not.

While this was initially met by violent pushback by the weakened U.S. government and its right-wing allies, concerted resistance eventually made attempting to secure territory against these proto-communes unprofitable. With government and mercenary aid, the wealthiest residents of the nation retreated to "climate bunkers," with some even attempting to migrate to the Musk Martian colonies (an endeavor which failed spectacularly). Faced with this power vacuum, some local warlords attempted to expand and reassert control over the flayed corpse of America, but found themselves falling prey to the same problems the federal government had faced.

Today, the semblance of state control only remains in a handful of pockets such as Washington, D.C. and Denver, and few similarly centralized governments have lasted, such as the Federation of New England, the New California Republic, and several Texan feudal states. While some particularly devastated regions such as the Florida archipelago have remained in chaos, most areas of the former U.S. have reasserted local control and begun the communalization process.

DESCRIBE POPULATION

Language
The confederation uses a wide variety of languages for its affairs. While the dominant language among most people remains English, the influx of climate refugees from the Global South has further increased the usage of Spanish among the population beyond pre-collapse levels. In addition, some communes have begun experimenting with the use of artificial languages, or "conlangs," such as Esperanto. Due to their incorporation of features of both Romance and Germanic languages, conlangs are seen by some as a key example of cultural synthesis and popular rebirth. However, some communes have moved in the opposite direction by working with returning indigenous tribes to reintroduce Illini traditions to the region as some tribes have migrated eastward. Linguists have worked to reconstruct the Myaami language of Sangamonia's pre-colonial inhabitants in hopes of reviving the cultural legacy of these groups and reversing the harmful effects of anti-indigenous imperialism.

Religion

The official policy of the confederation is secular, and there are no established or enforced religions in the region. However, the overall religious demographics of the region have remained roughly consistent with pre-collapse trends, with 35% being Protestant Christian, 25% being Roman Catholic, 3% belonging to another Christian denomination, 2% being Jewish, 4% being part of another non-Christian group, and 31% not identifying with any religion. The main changes have been the increased proportion of Roman Catholics, attributable to the increase in Latinx people in the region due to climate displacement, and the higher number of unaffiliated people, a continuation of earlier trends of decreasing religiosity.

Race
The racial makeup of the region has remained largely the same, but trends of climate displacement have contributed to some demographic changes. Although a majority (50%) still identify as white, migration from Central America and the American South--areas which were severely affected by climate degradation--has increased the percentage of black (17%) and Latinx (22%) individuals. Indigenous resettlement has pushed the percentage of Native Americans to 1%, and Asian people still comprise 6% of the population. In addition, 4% of the population is bi/multiracial.

Government

The confederation operates in accordance with libertarian socialist principles, allowing the individual communes to retain sovereignty over most aspects of their governance. Each community practices horizontal autonomy and mutual aid by building and maintaining their own health, education, and sustainable agro-ecological systems, promoting gender equity through Women's Revolutionary Law, and building solidarity with other leftist organizations.

Each commune sends two representatives to negotiate with others in the Congress, which operates on a progressive stack model. The central confederal government maintains inter-commune infrastructure projects and territorial disputes, and functions as the arbitrator in inter-commune disputes when requested to by those parties.

Foreign Relations and Military

The lack of central government in the region has made diplomacy a matter more often reserved for individual communities to address. The overall relationship of the confederation with the Combined Lake Area Syndicate of Chicago is positive, with the communes providing surplus agricultural products in return for advanced manufactured items produced by Chicagoan factory workers. Minor friction occasionally occurs due to the ideological split between the centralized syndicalism of Chicago's Working People's Council and the decentralized social anarchism of Sangamonia, but both sides understand the utility of the other's system in addressing their unique conditions.

Individual communes maintain their own militias as necessary to deal with community defense. The Defense and Liberation Army, the democratically organized fighting force responsible for the initial uprising and defense in Sangamonia, was only retained during the initial period of post-collapse turbulence and conflict with warlords, but the current period of stability has led to its disbandment.

Rather than simply focusing on producing as much as possible, as many economies did pre-collapse, the economic system employed in Sangamonia is focused on sustainability and meeting the needs of all communities.

The economy of the confederation is based upon principles of decentralization and community management. Each commune has an elected committee which distributes resources as needed. Much of the farmland and other means of production are community-run, and those who privately own property are only permitted to hold what they can operate with their families; the rest is collectivized. Rather than simply focusing on producing as much as possible, as many economies did pre-collapse, the economic system employed in Sangamonia is focused on sustainability and meeting the needs of all communities.

Very interesting and easy ready! Excellent lore! Only questions I have is what the role of the national gov is and the process of joining/leaving the confederation. Also don't know if you really need 10 cities. Any expansion of history would be great as it was really well written and interesting! keep it up

Thanks, I haven't really hammered that out yet myself. The only reason the city list is in there is because it was in the template, so I'll probably end up removing that.

Off to a good start here. Some information in the quick table and the main text don't match up, the population number for example. Also I think the main language of the Illini is called Miami-Illinois or Myaamia.

I just chose to institute sortition (randomly choosing people to be in the government) because it...sort of...reflected the most anarchist-related option in the issue? Weirdly satisfied with some of the ways I choose issues despite the game thinking my government is massive lol

Mine plummeted but my thinking was probably quite close to yours.

Wait do you get presented this choice in an issue?

Oh yeah, it went down from 79 to 57 and I got switched from a "Left-Wing Utopia" to a "Scandinavian Liberal Paradise."

Wifiknight wrote:Wait do you get presented this choice in an issue?

Yes, it was an issue about many parliamentary elections going uncontested. The other options were to just let it happen (and presumably help create a political machine), not allow elections to happen without multiple people running (effectively forcing competition), and of course the ever-present option to just abolish elections and take total control.
