- Most comparable Real-World country and why: Sierra Leone - Gemma is planned as a post-colonial least-developed country (LDC) which relies heavily on the mining sector of its resource economy. Labor exploitation is widespread, with the majority of the population living below the national poverty level. Corruption infects the government at all levels- local, provincial, and national. Political instability is exacerbated by the nation's dependence on the diamond industry, whose revenue is often used to fund unrest and illicit activities.
- Brief background of national history: Most of this remains to how Gemma will mesh with existing national and regional canon, but Gemma is a relatively young nation, only granted independence in the 1960s from its former colonial overlord. The nation soon devolved into civil strife after the colonial administration and garrison was withdrawn and their appointed successors futilely attempted to retain power. The first democratic government was overthrown and replaced with a military junta which ruled until the late 1980s, when democratic agitators instigated a civil war and, having triumphed, established a second democratic government in the 1990s, which rules to the present day.
- Geography and climate of nation: Gemma has a tropical climate and mostly consists of jungle lowlands. The coast, aside from a few natural harbors deep enough for shipping, is mostly barrier islands, shoals, and wetlands. Deep in the interior of the country, the land rises and dries, becoming a tropical savanna which is renowned internationally for its exotic wildlife.
- Idea for a possible future RP event: The number of activities an LDC such as Gemma could participate is relatively limited, however, international sports events like the Olympics with the opportunity for world fame would certainly be appealing.
