I decided to remake my factbook about one of my story's continents. It's complete with a continental map and political map between two centuries.

Alteriya

Alteriya is a continent in Paxium known for being home to the heartland of the former Spayxian Empire, having relocated from Ofsterna as part of the former empire's conquest. Post-collapse and the later decline of its most significant successor state, the Ikrado Kingdom, saw the rise of succeeding powers, both in favour of and against inheriting Spayxian customs, traditions, and governance.

Geographically, Alteriya is a large continent surrounded by the Lochegon and Alato Oceans. Neighbouring next to the continents of Bonsana, Aprata and the Twin Valasais, Alteriya comprises primarily mountainous regions and forests with plenty of water sources and is home to some of the most prominent nations in Paxium, with roots dating back to the Spayx Glorica era. Weather disparities between the East and West of Alteriya are significant due to the abnormal phenomenon of 'climate bubbles'.
Alteriya Political Map (400s)

Alteriya Political Map (500s)

Significant nations of Alteriya
1. Greater Karpanna (Karpan) is home to the Spayxian Empire's former capital, Ontoskow (once known as Ontosama). After the Razing of Ontosama in the 6th Century SG, which marked the end of the Spayxian Empire and the destruction of the Ikrado Kingdom in the 1st Century SE, Karpan emerged as a succeeding nation after years of anomicism (anarchy). It is known for its emphasis on naval customs, a form of traditional 'evolution' by merging Spayxian customs with more modern 'acceptable' ideas. It is currently locked in a cold war with Kovijev, which has lasted for centuries after the emergence of "Ameliorism" (Progressivism), threatening the Spayxian ideas of society and governance.

2. The Uhketan Kingdom, allied to Karpan, was among the first succeeding nations to emerge after the Spayxian collapse, though competitive friction between itself and Karpan has led to a short war in the 5th Century SE.

3. The Ocrosian Empire was poised to become a power greater than Karpanna, owed to its nationalistic behaviours between the 2nd to early 5th Century SE that led them to wage a grand conquest that gobbled up smaller nations within the east and western parts of Alteriya with threats of military force and intimidation. The Invasion of Ocros was backed by the Alteriyan Federation of Independent Nations (AFIN) and spearheaded by the smaller nations of Pechnia, Korska and Rozlakra, exposed Ocros' incompetent military structure and strategy, leading to the creation of the Kuskyne state and the ultimate decline of Ocros by the 6th Century SE.

4. The Kuskyne State is an artificial buffer state created by the joint administration of Karpan, Uhketan and Ocros to act as a bulwark against Eastern aggression (or so they claim). It primarily consists of territory from former nations forcefully annexed by Ocros during its centuries-long expansionism, such as Maschron, Uzpoeni, Tugriza and Yukte.

5. The Republic of Kovijev prides itself in its Ameliorist ideals, opposing the 'oppression' of Spayxianism and the rule of monarchism by promoting democratic ideas and republicanism, influenced by its former ally of Erestin from North Valasai.

I'm excited to share the entries for the Mascot Design Contest! I've received a fantastic array of creative designs from some talented participants. A big thank you to everyone who took the time to submit their ideas!

Here are our entries:

Title: Gerald The Deer. He is an anthropomorphic deer, symbolizing the national animal of Rylland, the Giant Antler Deer.
Submitted by: Rylland

Gerald was created by artist Arnold Schmidt in the 1960s. Arnold has been creating mascots for Ryllandic mascots, so he came up with an idea about a mascot symbolizing Rylland itself. He borrowed a character from his own story book named "The Deer King of Souchelia", and came up with the name Gerald, named after his son.

Title: Lutu - the Surfing Crab-Eating Bat
Submitted by: Safiloa

Link
Safiloa is home to many unique animals, including the Lutuang, also known as the Crab-Eating Bat (Mystacina carcinivora). The Lutuang swims close to shore along the coasts of Safiloa and hunts crustaceans and other invertebrates that get trapped in the tidepools. It is crepuscular and hunts at dawn and dusk. They live in small burrows in the white sand or in hollowed out tree trunks in the mangroves. They sometimes will swell up with air and float along with the waves. Their oily fur is somewhat waterproof and their single digit fingers at the tips of their wings allows them to grasp on the seaside rocks and mangrove roots.
Link
Safiloa's mascot for competition there for will be Lutu - the Surfing Crab-Eating Bat. This fun and joyful mascot represents the uniqueness, pleasure-seeking, seaside easy-go-lucky spirit of the Safiloan people. Lutu likes to party, sing, dance, surf, and eat delicious vegan food, just like the Safiloans! Lutu was designed by an 8-year-old in third grade, Veralina Pochettino, as part of a national call for a national mascot for this very competition. The entire nation of Safiloa is very excited to see what will come of this!

Title: The Polar Bear
Submitted by: Svalbard og jan mayen
The Polar Bear: A Symbol of Svalbard og Jan Mayen's Rugged Beauty and Fragile Future
Svalbard og Jan Mayen, a nation sculpted by glaciers and windswept plains, finds its perfect embodiment in the majestic polar bear. These magnificent creatures, perfectly adapted to the harsh Arctic environment, embody the spirit of the nation itself. Here's why the polar bear reigns supreme as the national animal of Svalbard og Jan Mayen:

A Symbol of Strength and Resilience: Polar bears are apex predators, thriving in one of the most unforgiving environments on Earth. Their thick fur, powerful claws, and keen hunting instincts mirror the harsh beauty and unwavering spirit of Svalbard og Jan Mayen. Just as the nation has weathered countless storms, both literal and metaphorical, so too do polar bears endure the challenges of the Arctic.
A Connection to the Land: Polar bears are integral to the Arctic ecosystem. They rely on the sea ice for hunting and travel, mirroring Svalbard og Jan Mayen's dependence on its unique environment for its very existence. The polar bear serves as a constant reminder of the delicate balance between human activity and the pristine wilderness.

A Beacon of Conservation: Sadly, polar bears are threatened by climate change, with shrinking sea ice jeopardizing their hunting grounds and survival. Choosing the polar bear as the national animal signifies Svalbard og Jan Mayen's commitment to environmental stewardship. It's a call to action for the nation and the world to protect this iconic species and the Arctic ecosystem it represents.

A Unique Cultural Identity: Polar bears are deeply woven into the cultural fabric of the Arctic. Their presence features prominently in folklore, art, and even local cuisine. By adopting the polar bear as their national animal, Svalbard og Jan Mayen celebrates its unique cultural heritage and its place within the wider Arctic community.

The polar bear serves as a powerful symbol for Svalbard og Jan Mayen, representing its strength, resilience, and connection to the Arctic. It's a call to protect not just a majestic creature, but the very environment that sustains both the polar bear and the nation itself. The Polar Bear: A Symbol of Svalbard og Jan Mayen's Rugged Beauty and Fragile Future

Title: The Pelican Eel
Submitted by: Elivastov

What is its origin?: The pelican eel was first found in medieval times in the village of Conta Porta. Old records show that low-class fishermen who first found the animal dead in the middle of the sea captured the creature. The animal was considered a monster due to its appearance, as it was found with its large mouth open, and was nicknamed the “Hellmouth”. The news spread quickly, not only to the village, but also to the entire nation that dominated the region (the kingdom of Melenia). The churches of the time declared the waters cursed, affecting a large part of Elivastov's territory.

At the same time, the Elivastov region became increasingly opposed to Melenia's domination. With the news of the pelican eel spreading and its nickname, the citizens of the Elivastov region, for complaining too much about the problems in their region, were called by other regions “The talkers from hell” or “The complainers from hell”, eventually shortened to “Helltalkers."

Soon, the Pelican Eel and the citizens of Elivastov were constantly associated at the time, and it was easy to see this association in the news and in art. Eventually, the local culture was also affected, and the citizens adopted the animal as their own mascot, and in the revolt for independence, the animal was one of the major symbols used.

How does it reflect your nation’s culture, history, or values?: The pelican eel represents the citizens, presenting them as people adapted to dangerous situations, using strategy to gain an advantage and not being afraid to fight for what is theirs. This vision has been gradually built up over the years through patriotism and culture.

What are the mascot’s special traits or personality?: The pelican eel has the unique characteristic of having a giant mouth, which is much larger than its body. The mouth is loosely articulated and can be opened wide enough to swallow a fish much larger than the eel itself. The mouth is quite large with powerful jaws that span nearly a quarter of their body. The eel also has an illuminated organ that attracts prey. The pelican eel lives in the deep sea, in depths ranging from 600 to 4000 meters deep.

Title: Lej The Dragon
Submitted by: Pathonia

A snow-white dragon, airborne, in a position resembling the Ouroboros (circular snake, forever consuming itself). The wings of the dragon are swooped back, following the sort of pattern made by the now-circular dragon body. They'd stop just short of being merged with the base of the wing. Within the small hole formed in the middle by the Ouroboros-like dragon would be a plain pale yellow dot.

Backstory/Origin: Rooted deeply in the epic of Lej and Rimna, whereby the founder of our royal family- Rimnaith Sentross -slew the dragon Lej and founded what would be our capital city for millennia up until a few years ago. In doing so, she freed the vast majority of the Pathonians from the dragon-worshipping cults that'd sprouted to try and win favours from the dragon-tyrant Lej.

The dragon is snowy white to try and show the stark nature of the battle. Contrasting with the black backdrop, the dragon is essentially the only thing standing in the way of a perfectly unified solid-colour image (ignoring the small yellow dot).

For all his physical strength, Lej was a somewhat mindless brute. He relied more upon the dragon-worshipping cults than they knew. And when the eventual challenger Rimna showed up, said cults were easily dispatched- being the religious devotees (not warriors) that they were.
Lej's hide couldn't be pierced by anything made by the Elves, Dwarves, or Humans.

Rimna ultimately defeated Lej by running circles around the Lejian Pillar/Column (the yellow dot. This is a top-down scene), and quickly dodging his attacks.

Once the dragon had fallen into the comfortable pattern of chasing Rimna in a circle around the pillar, she quickly ran out of the loop as Lej's maw began to close around her.

The dragon wound up consuming his own tail, which is why the dragon is shown to be doing that- in the fashion of the Ouroboros -in the mascot.

Culture: The Sentross' had ruled Pathonia for millennia following Lej's death. Not including the recent events which lead to their near-extinction, they had cemented themselves in every Pathonian definition of power and control. The word 'monarch' didn't even exist up until less than a decade ago; 'Ruling Sentross' was used instead. The defeat of Lej, as shown in the mascot/image, is their greatest showcase of power. And, as an extension, is the greatest display of Pathonian power.

Values: Dominance and the intelligence of the humanoid races, alongside the value of having (... well, this point isn't as relevant anymore) such a powerful family / representation of Pathonia defeating a creature formerly considered to be a god. It forms a loose basis for the superiority of mortals over religiously-grounded deities, which is a key tenet in our current Empress's Pathedonist Creed.

What are the mascot’s special traits or personality: Ah... Lej, who was in fact a sort of demigod- if not a full god -was arrogant and generally fits the apt stereotype of a strong-but-not_smart individual. Lej had the ability of flight, of course, and- perhaps strangely -is the only dragon in recorded Pathonian history to have been able to wield the notoriously difficult lightning school of magic. For all their power, only our current Empress has managed to achieve mastery over lightning; Lej's ability to use it all the way back during the genesis of magical study and development reinforces how special / infamous / dangerous he was.

Welcome to 10000 Islands!

If you're new to the game, you're probably wondering what all of the site features are and how they work. You'll find that NationStates is a seemingly simple browser game with a rich community and a depth of features and game play developed by players over the course of almost 18 years. 10000 Islands is one of the oldest regions in the game, dating back to 2002, with a continuously operational defender military and active regional government.

This Dispatch includes a step-by-step guide to how to get started in NationStates and become involved in 10000 Islands. NationStates is fundamentally a social game played regularly over the course of a long time. Take a minute to read up and dive in, eventually you'll forge your own unique path and be able to customize a game experience you enjoy!

P.S. Feel free to introduce yourself over in the Regional Message Board or over in the forums in the LinkWelcome Center.

Opening Steps

The first thing you'll want to do, if you haven't already, is to answer your issues. In NationStates, you function as the all-powerful leader of your nation and Issues are how you effect your government's policy and national statistics. Issues are the only way to effect these and you'll have to wait for more issues once you've answered them all. To learn more about issues, you can check out the 10000 Islands Linkissue and stats lounge or this Issue answering FAQ.

While you wait to receive more issues, you should join the World Assembly (WA). Joining the WA requires that you input your email address on the settings page (know that your email will not be visible to other users and NationStates does not send you spam emails!). Joining the World Assembly is important because it grants you a say in developing international law through the General Assembly and preserving international peace through the Security Council. More importantly, joining the WA grants you citizenship in 10000 Islands, which allows you to participate in elections and run for office.

Once you've joined the World Assembly, be sure to endorse the World Assembly Delegate Astrobolt. Endorsing the Delegate gives the region more power in the World Assembly because the Delegate's vote is weighted so they receive an extra vote for each WA endorsement they have. You can also decide how the WA Delegate votes once you're registered on the forum by Linkparticipating in WA voting polls.

After you've done that, you can get involved in our regional community by signing up for the Linkregional forum. The forum is the main headquarters for our regional government, economy, cultural events, our defender military, and role-playing. When you sign up for the forum, it's important to follow the instructions in the first post of Linkthis thread so that an Account Masker can go through and confirm your account to give you access to appropriate areas of the forum.

The last thing to do is join our regional LinkDiscord server. Discord is a live chat platform that we use to hang out and get to know our region-mates a little better. Stop by to meet some new friends!

Once you've done these four things (answer Issues, join the WA, sign up on the forum, and introduce yourself on Discord), you're all set! From there, take your own path and discover what about 10000 Islands interests you. The rest of this Dispatch is an index of guides and resources for you to look at.

Guides and Set Up
  • Regional Government: 10000 Islands is governed according to the LinkConstitution by the Chief Executive, a Council of Nine, and various executive government officials. Understanding the nuances of this system and why things are structured this way is important, and this guide serves to unpack all of that along with how you can get involved.

  • RMB Etiquette and Guide: The Regional Message Board (or RMB) is the shared community space we have that is built into NationStates. If you'd prefer not to use off-site forums or chat apps, it'll be hard for you to get involved in regional government or parts of our culture, but you can access a healthy sliver of our community through talking to your neighbors on the RMB. However, this comes with rules and community guidelines outlined in this guide.

  • WA Guide: Learn more about the World Assembly here - what is the General Assembly and the Security Council? How does WA membership effect your nation? What regional programs does 10000 Islands have for engaging in the WA?

  • Join TITO!: The Ten thousand Islands Treaty Organization (TITO) is 10000 Islands' regional defender military - they help secure other regions' security when they're attacked by raider forces. Learn about what exactly TITO does and how to help here.

  • Houses and Generations Guide: Discover your lineage and place in XKI's family tree as well as make friends by exploring our House and Generation system in this guide. Compete in competitions with other Houses and more!

  • Entertainment and Activities Guide: Want more fun things to do? Look no further than this guide! Discover all the endless possibilities for fun here in the 10000 Islands and how to interact with them or learn more about creating your own fun.

10000 Islands Frequently Asked Questions

What is the first thing I should do now that I've joined the region?
There are many ways to become involved in the region now that you've joined, like becoming a citizen, joining the forum where you can vote in elections and do lots of fun things, joining the discord server, or doing things gameside like endorsing the delegate, solving issues, and chatting on the regional message board. Learn more about the opening steps to involvement in the region in the XKI Welcome Guide.

What is the World Assembly and how do I join?
The World Assembly is like NationStates version of the United Nations which governs the World. It passes different laws, and can condemn or commend nations on their acheivements. Members get to vote on each of these laws (you can vote for the ones you like and vote against the ones you don't), however you will have to follow anything that passes. You aren't allowed to just follow the laws you like and ignore the ones you don't.

Joining the World Assembly is not mandatory but it is open to everyone. Just go to the World Assembly page and click "Apply to Join" which just sends you an email that you need to accept (there's no actual application process). Be warned, as a user while you can have multiple nations and puppets only one can be a member of the World Assembly. Being a member allows you to endorse the delegate as well as other nations, and in addition allows you to vote on resolutions. More information on what endorsements do as well as the benefits of joining the World Assembly are below.

In addition check out the XKI World Assembly Guide for more information.

How do I become a Citizen? / What is the difference between WA and Non-WA membership?
All 10000 residents in the WA are citizens of 10000 Islands. Citizens are eligible to vote and run in various elections and hold certain government positions, where as non-WA members are not able to. All WA members are highly encouraged to endorse the delegate to help keep the region safe. Learn more about citizenship and 10000 Islands government in the Regional Government Guide.

What are endorsements? How do I get endorsements?
Endorsements are something you can do to fellow WA member nations in your region. In order to endorse another nation you both need to be WA members and to be in the same region. While they don't matter too much (however are important for bragging rights) endorsing the Delegate is very important as it keeps our region safe.

In order that Delegate transitions are more easily achieved, we limit endorsements to 1/2 the total of the sitting Delegate. Endorsement trading (aka "endo tarting") is OK up to this limit, but if you are over this limit at the time of Delegate transition, once every 6 months, you will be asked to shed your endorsements to get to this limit - or failing that, be temporarily booted from the region (which will cost you all of your endorsements). So mind this limit please.

Keep in mind that even when there isn't a Delegate transition going on, the limit still applies. Please remember this.

What is TITO? How do I join TITO?
The Ten-thousand Islands Treaty Organization or TITO is 10000 Islands' defender military. You can learn more about joining TITO here.

Does 10000 Islands have a map? How can I get added to the map?
Yes, 10000 Islands does have a map. You can view the map in this dispatch or on the forum Linkhere.

To be added to the map, you need to register a forum account and have a minimum of ten posts over a period of one month.
You also must be a Citizen (WA resident) of 10000 Islands, with a national population of at least 250 Million.

If you qualify, you can post Linkhere to be added.

What is the legislative process of this region? / How can I get onto the Council?
The Council of Nine is the legislative body of the Islands. Here legislation is written, passed, revised, and repealed. There is also a LinkCouncil of Nine Lobby, where you can bring matters to the attention of the Council. In addition all official Council discussions except those marked secure will be viewable by all citizens so you can get up to date information on what's happening in the Council. However only council members are able to post in these non-secure discussions.

There are 3 appointed, and 5 elected positions in the Council (the other is held by our Chief Executive). Elections occur every odd numbered month. Senators serve a 4-month term and the Delegate serves a 6-month term.

What is recruiting? How can I become a recruiter?
Recruiting is sending invitations to other nations. We use something called the Accelerator for ease of recruiting. Read Linkhere for more info.

I have more questions!
Great! Check out the the rest of the guides, and/or see the forum for Linkmore Information about 10000 Islands!

10000 Islands Regional Message Board Etiquette

The RMB (or Regional Message Board) is the common property of everyone in 10000 Islands. When posting on it, please observe these rules:

1. The RMB (or Regional Message Board) is the common property of everyone in 10000 Islands, and posts on the RMB should be PG-13 in nature and relevant to the wider community whenever possible. The XKI RMB is not a chat-board of the sort that appears as a quick moving sidebar on many games, or on YouTube channels, etc. The XKI RMB is designed for substantive posts and community discussions, government announcements, nation introductions and updates, and is an area where nations may ask questions and get answers relating to the game.

The RMB should not be monopolized by a few, for extended conversations, to the exclusion of everyone else. This sort of one-on-one chatting should be moved to the regional Discord server or conducted using the NationStates telegram feature.

2. Racist, homophobic, or generally intolerant comments directed at another group or individual, be they political or social in nature, are not acceptable in the RMB. This applies to everyone, regardless of political stripe or perspective.

NationStates is a political game, and political conversations in the RMB are frequent. If you disagree with someone, make your case by presenting a different set of ideas, not by attacking the individual with whom you don't agree. Flaming and trolling (posts designed specifically to incite controversy, bait others, or create negative discourse) are also expressly forbidden forms of posting.

3. Roleplay is not permitted in the 10000 Islands RMB

Occasionally posting in-character (from the perspective of your nation's leader), presenting IC updates from your nation, or posting national factbooks, is permitted and encouraged in the XKI RMB.

However, when in-character exchanges occur between two or more people, this moves into the realm of roleplay, which is not permitted in the XKI RMB. If you wish to proceed with an in-character exchange with another nation or nations, please move the conversation to the A Taco Archipelago RMB or A Taco Fantasy RMB, which exists solely for the purpose of RMB RP activities.

4. Spamming, filler posts, obscene language, and multi-posting are not permitted

Spamming will include any nonsense posts or posts that contribute nothing to the regional conversation or the discussion at hand. Posting for the sake of posting or for attention, gibberish, posting in all caps or using bold or underlined text unnecessarily all fall into this category, and are not permitted. Quoting spam posts by another user perpetuates the spam problem and will be considered spamming as well.

Double or triple posting (posting two or more comments consecutively) is also not allowed. The posting window on each comment has an EDIT feature. If you find you have more to say after posting in the RMB, simply add to your first post instead of making a second, unless replying to a post from someone else after yours.

5. Recruiting and region linking is not permitted

Promoting movement out of XKI to another region is against regional RMB rules. This will also include doing so by linking to another region in the RMB, using code. This is particularly true of linking to raider regions in the XKI RMB, which should never occur. You are welcome to mention other regions in the game, but please do not create hotlinks.

Nations posting from outside XKI are expected to follow regional RMB rules.

Special thanks to Kuriko for writing, and Free las pinas for formatting.
