Kumbhir Class (Not to be confused with the previous Kumbhir Class Landing Ship Tanks) are the latest and the first ships of Landing Helicopter Deck Amphibious Assault Ships for the Indian Navy. They are primarily made for expeditionary warfare and amphibious assaults with a combined arms force.
The well deck is made to allow two LCUs to enter and load/unload troops and also deploy other landing boats and even Amphibious Vehicles.
The Kumbhir Class also has a hanger below deck to hold aircrafts and can carry eight Vertical take-off and landing fighters jets and twenty four helicopters (if fighters are not carried).
The Kumbhir class can hold roughly half a Army Infantry Brigade at once with all its vehicles but even more troops can be carried at the sacrifice of space for vehicles. The entire ship is suppose to hold an Indian Marine Combined Arms Expeditionary Brigade (IMCAEB) which consist of both aerial and ground components.
The ship has moving parts greaty reduced with the use of fly by wire (or sail by wire) which uses wires and electronics instead of several moving parts to reduce maintenance and also allow the ships to make less acoustic noises and also improve crew comfort.
Automation is also improved to reduce crew requirement and crew compartments are made to be modular.
A 100 bed hospital, an large canteen, a large breifing room and an Central Combat Centre Room are also present to improve crew comfort and provide facilities for command and control.
Overall for self defense, the Kumbhir Class has four AK-630 CIWS, eight Remote Operated .50 Caliber Machine Guns
sixteen VLS for VL-SRSAM. The ships overall are to be escorted by other ships, requiring its own battle group like Carrier Battle Groups to defend itself and provide even more firepower to the Marines.
