President Silvia Leggièri has signed into law the National Service Expansion Act, which passed both houses of Parliament with wide majorities last week. Under current law all citizens who have turned 18 years of age must enlist in the National Service for a period of 12 months. While most enlistees opt for the Armed Forces or the Aerospace Service, there are available slots in every ministry. The newly passed law allows the National Service to sign agreements with state governments so that enlistees have the option to serve their mandated time with state agencies, something that was previously not possible.
