International Sudoku Day

Attention all puzzle fanatics and math lovers! The World Puzzle Federation established International Sudoku Day on September 9, a day with tremendous symbolism for followers of the game. Sudoku, which means “single number” in Japanese, is a logic-based number puzzle in which the objective is to fill a 9×9 grid so that each column, row and 3×3 sub-grid contains all the digits from 1 to 9.

Although Sudoku is immensely popular, it is a fairly new game. Historically, number puzzles have been around since the 19th century, but Sudoku as we know it, didn’t appear until the 1980s in Japan. The game was unknown in the West until 2004 when Sudoku became a regular feature in newspapers. There’s even an annual competition. It seems we just can’t get enough of it!

International Sudoku Day Activities

Solve Sudoku puzzles
There’s no better way to observe International Sudoku Day than to solve some Sudoku puzzles! You can do as many or as few as you want, but challenge yourself. Test your skills by choosing higher-level games. Play Sudoku in the morning while eating breakfast. Get in a quick game during your lunch break, or play Sudoku in the evening while you wind down from a busy day with a relaxing glass of wine.

Buy new Sudoku puzzle books
Run out of puzzles to solve? Make International Sudoku Day the day you replenish your puzzle supply. If you’re a Sudoku connoisseur, hunt around for the most challenging puzzle book you can find. If you're a Sudoku newbie, there are plenty of entry-level books for you. Either way, get a new book and solve those puzzles like there’s no tomorrow!

Challenge a friend to play
Sudoku doesn’t have to be a one-person activity. Take the challenge to the next level by competing against your friends. Whoever solves the puzzle first, wins. You can all take part at the same time or create brackets to narrow it down to the best puzzle-solver. The winner gets bragging rights for at least three days!

vWhy We Love International Sudoku Day
Puzzles are fun! [/b]
Some of us love visual puzzles and go for word searches. Others love word games and prefer crossword puzzles. If you love numbers, math, and logic, Sudoku is a puzzle that's right up your alley.

We love a good challenge
It’s fun to be challenged and Sudoku is excellent at making us think. There are varying degrees of difficulty to match your skills with the game that's right for you. Yes, it can be frustrating sometimes, causing you to throw your Sudoku book at the wall (but it’s okay — we aren’t judging you because we know you love the challenge.)

It keeps our minds sharp
Actively participating in things that exercise our brains, especially those that involve math, are great at keeping our minds sharp. Sudoku can increase your focus and concentration as well as alleviate depression. Studies also suggest puzzles and word games help prevent Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. Who knew Sudoku could be so good for your health?

National Wiener Schnitzel Day

National Wiener Schnitzel Day is served up every September 9. Contrary to what most Americans know, Wiener Schnitzel isn’t just a chain restaurant. In fact, a Wiener Schnitzel is a veal cutlet coated in bread and then pan-fried. This renowned dish is considered an Austrian delicacy in its beautiful capital, Vienna.

Wiener Schnitzel, (again, the dish, not the restaurant chain,) is so iconic that there are copycat recipes all over the world. For example, in America, there’s the ever-popular chicken-fried steak and in Japan, tonkatsu, a breaded and deep-friend pork cutlet. But you haven’t lived until you savor an authentic dish of Wiener Schnitzel. There are lots of pretenders to the throne but for the real deal, head to Austria. If you do a culinary tour of Europe, put this incredible dish — Wiener Schnitzel — at the top of your bucket list!

National Wiener Schnitzel Day – History

Middle Ages
Arabs covered their meat in grated bread

Records of the Middle Ages show that Arab merchants would cover their meat in breadcrumbs before cooking it.

1134
The beginnings of Wiener Schnitzel

Romans left a record of a dish called Cotoletta a la Milanese, which was a dish made of veal, breadcrumbs, and lemon.

1862
The term "Wiener Schnitzel" is born

It's said that an Italian from Milan coined the term we now know as "Wiener Schnitzel," and it became popular in 1862.

1905
Figlmüller restaurant is founded

Figlmüller is a Viennese restaurant said to be the original home of the Wiener Schnitzel. The restaurant is extremely popular with both tourists and locals.

1961
Confusion!

Wienerschnitzel becomes a popular, new hot dog chain causing many Americans to associate the term, "Wienerschnitzel", with hot dogs rather than the traditional dish with fried, breaded meat!

National Wiener Schnitzel Day Activities

Go out for some
You might be fortunate to live in an area where there's an Austrian restaurant. We bet they have Wiener Schnitzel on the menu and a simple Google search will help you find your nearest location.

Cook your own
Head to a specialty butcher shop or well-stocked grocery store for the loveliest piece of veal cutlet you can find. Pound the veal until it's nice and thin, then, dip it in flour, egg, and breadcrumbs. Just be careful not to press the breadcrumbs against the veal. Pan-fry until golden brown and serve with the garnish or side dish of your choice.

Try a veggie version
Though this may sound counterintuitive, the popularity of vegetarian dishes means that you'll be able to find a vegetarian Wiener Schnitzel somewhere. If not, you can always cook your own version using soy, seitan, or tempeh.

Why We Love National Wiener Schnitzel Day

A. Wiener Schnitzels are simple, but tasty!
Wiener Schnitzels are pan-fried and served with simple garnishes. But hey, what matters is that this fried combination of veal cutlets and breadcrumbs never disappoints.

Wiener Schnitzel is versatile
If you eat a Wiener Schnitzel in Austria or at an Austrian-style restaurant, chances are you will receive the traditional lemon and parsley garnishes. Some places may also serve it with a salad, mashed potatoes, or even fried vegetables such as mushrooms.

It can be either this or that
On National Wiener Schnitzel Day, pronounce it the traditional Austrian way as in "veener schnitzel" or the Americanized version with the w sound as in "weenerschnitzel." Decide if you want to write it with one word or two. It's National Wiener Schnitzel Day. Do what you like!

National Boss/Employee Exchange Day

Each year on the Monday following Labor Day, National Boss/Employee Exchange Day offers an opportunity to see how the other half of a business works.

While bosses and employees often have brainstorming sessions, exchanging positions provides insight into the business. When done with planning and communication, the exchange can lead to successful business solutions. Employees gain confidence and leadership skills. Another benefit from the role reversal includes the added respect or improvements to workflows.

Comparing notes following the exchange will be a vital part of the process. Additionally, those discussions should be in the spirit of the day. Take advantage of the knowledge gained and present ideas that will advance the business.

Most bosses have many employees. One way to execute this experience is by having team members nominate one person to swap places with the boss. Not only does this afford a respected member of the team an opportunity to bring feedback to the group, but it also places the boss squarely on the team. The hands-on experience will provide a good leader with insight normally overlooked.

HOW TO OBSERVE #BossEmployeeExchangeDay
On this day, you and your boss can switch places for the day and see how the other one spends their day. Can you do their job? Can they do your job? Be proactive and plan ahead. Schedule a planning session with your boss or supervisor. Exchange a list of responsibilities. Following the day experience, share ideas, solutions, and thoughts. Each of you may find new ways of doing a task or insight into the other’s position. Share new understandings and skills from this day

National Teddy Bear Day

On September 9th, National Teddy Bear Day honors the history of one of childhood’s favorite toys. We have all had a special cuddly teddy as a child. Some of us still have our teddy bear from our childhood. Whether or not you still have your childhood teddy, the day is a perfect time to celebrate your childhood friend!

In 1902, American President Theodore Roosevelt refused to shoot a bear cub while hunting in Mississippi. This incident made national news. Clifford Berryman published a cartoon of the event in the Washington Post on November 16th, 1902. The caricature became an instant classic:

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/b/b3/TheodoreRooseveltTeddyBear.jpg/390px-TheodoreRooseveltTeddyBear.jpg

The Berryman cartoon of Teddy Roosevelt and the cub inspired New York store owner Morris Michtom to create a new toy. Morris Michtom wrote President Roosevelt to ask permission to name the new toy a “Teddy Bear.”

A teddy bear does not depend on mechanics to give him the semblance of life. He is loved – and therefore, he lives. ~ Pam Brown

Since the advent of the Teddy Bear, a parade of famous characters followed.

Big Bird from Sesame Street had a Teddy Bear named Radar. The lasagna loving cat celebrated on Garfield the Cat Day armed himself with Pooky, his lovable scapegoat. The British invasion of Teddy Bears includes Winnie-the-Pooh and Paddington. In 1981, the Care Bears first became greeting cards. Not long after, they launched into television and toy history.

Another Muppet character we must mention is Fozzie Bear. The lovable and comedic bear endlessly perseveres with one-liners, slapstick and musical comedy.

HOW TO OBSERVE #NationalTeddyBearDay
Share some of your favorite Teddy Bear characters from a time gone by. Are they recent interpretations of the lovable creature? Or do you have an affinity for the classic Teddy Bear?

Care Bears Share Your Care Day

On September 9th, Care Bears Share Your Care Day inspires giving and volunteering in significant ways.

For 35 years, Care Bears have taught children of all ages about sharing their feelings and caring for others. The Care Bears toy line was initially introduced in 1983 to caring fans everywhere, and they’ve never been out of the heart and minds of fans since. Recently, the huggable Cousins have been reintroduced for digital natives on Netflix in the Netflix Original Series: Care Bears & Cousins.

At their core, CARE BEARS™ SHARE YOUR CARE DAY have heart and are all about love, caring, and sharing with others. Care Bears also support charities around the world that help families in need, including We Care Bears, ZachKapCares, Fathom/en-ABLE, United Way, Operation Smile, and many more.

With help from a team of Care Bears Ambassadors, Care Bears hope to generate national support for a movement called #ShareYourCare to inspire people toward philanthropic generosity not just on that day, but every day of the year!

HOW TO OBSERVE #ShareYourCareDay
The main focus of Share Your Care Day is to inspire acts of kindness and goodwill across the United States and beyond. And, a team of Care Bears Ambassadors and Care Bears partners pledge to help make this goal come true. Care Bears have taught fans worldwide the importance of caring for others. Share Your Care Day is the perfect opportunity for everyone to participate in acts of kindness – and to remember that goodwill and consideration toward others are essential every day of the year.

Participation is as simple as doing something nice for someone else.

Treat a friend to coffee.
Share a toy with a sibling.
Do an extra chore without being asked.
Help an older neighbor bring their trash cans to the street.
Organize a tree-planting campaign.
Buy a meal for a homeless family.
Volunteer at a local charity.
The #ShareYourCare movement is all about acts of kindness, big and small. Care Bears encourage you to do something nice for someone today. Care Bears hope to encourage you to be kind, think of others and #ShareYourCare every day
