This kind of stuff is pretty rare, but it has indeed happened before on a larger scale to a losing candidate. The 1872 Democratic Nominee, Horace Greeley, died before the electoral votes could be filed (November 28th), meaning that a variety of democrats got the electoral vote of the party as opposed to Greeley. It was pretty messy to say the least. The electoral count was probably one of the oddest ever. 286-42-18-3-2-1.
