NationStates can provide a reminder email to you before your nation disappears. This is how I've stopped mine from going defunct, although generally I log in pretty regularly to deal with issues.

i always pick against, unless it's a repeal. because i dislike the feature to start with and without easy changes and a better overview having less resolutions is more.

TBF, i gave less about the issues once i felt they tilt a little too much into the absurd. And that aspect, in my opinion, has gotten worse over the years. Issues feel more like a bad Satire at times than actual issues.

Yer, accidentally making your country socialist isn't fun. Although I think giving limited control on what policies you have would alleviate this. A little bit of micromanagement would go a long way.
