NBC National News

Today in the news, Independence enacted, official recognition, refugees welcomed : This morning, the Parliament officially recognised the nation of Romanija, a new state born out of Republic Of Srpska And Herzeg-Bosnia after a long lasting political crisis that split the country. The nation saw birth through a historical treaty signed yesterday by both leaders of each parties : President Djuro Pucar, and President Borisav Jovic. But, a few days ago, alsum seekers fleeing political instability where allowed in Nanako, and a few others seeked refuge in the Nanakian embassy, asking to be granted temporary refugee status. Alongside recognising the nation of Romanija, the Parliament also granted refugee status to the 12 Serbs waiting to be processed in Nanakian embassy to Banja Luka. The decree also permitted the issuing of 20 temporary refugee visas per month to Serbian nationals, wether they are from the Republic Of Srpska And Herzeg-Bosnia, or Romanija. Some MP, primarily from far-right parties, have enquired the majority on the necessity to welcome those refugees while a peace treaty was signed. Labor spokesperson retorted that "We can't speculate on the sustainability of this treaty, we can only provide hope to the needing ones". Minister of Home Affairs also announced Nanako will allow resettlement of Serbian refugees from Medoynia up to 200 persons. The State of Poole and the Adachi Bay State have already submitted their readiness to welcome said refugees in welcome centers.

Calicambria wrote:“First of all, the agreement would essentially eliminate all tariffs on good such as agricultural products, consumer electronics, and other items of economic importance. The agreement also includes a clause to promote sustainability in all goods and enforces strict basic labor standards and ethics,” the President says.

Secretary of State Nina Tolliver chimes in, saying: “This agreement will promote commerce and trade between our countries and foster more innovation.”

"We totally follow ideals of sustainability, and labor standards and ethics are a primary value of Nanakian Law. We are very much agreeing on all points for the moment, but I think we should work on defining "items of economic importance", if you agree."

Prime Minister Joseph Caruana, along with several high-ranking members of the Medoynian government, have touched down in Bonaero, Meridujo for a planned state visit to take place with Meridujan leadership in the Velura Palace, outside of Bonaero. The Prime Minister and the Medoynian delegation arrived on Medoynia One, a special callsign assigned to any plane that the Medoynian head of state (President) or head of government (Prime Minister) is on.

They are excited to pursue negotiations on various issues and topics with Meridujan leadership as Meridujo is home to many overseas Medoynians who emigrated to the area in the mid-20th century.

President Ruiz, who arrived at the airport shortly before, personally greets the Prime Minister as they set their first steps into Meridujo. A small welcoming party, composed of the local indigenous tribe's representatives as well as a small team from the Bonaero Revolutionary Guard, is also present. They will perform their traditional invitation dance as part of the ceremony, including live music and singing.

President Ruiz's own team has worked tirelessly in order to organise this meeting - one of the first formal visits between the new Meridujoan nation and the outside world.

Prime Minister Joseph Caruana | February 5, 2020

After notice provided from the Serbian government to the Medoynian government, the Department of Foreign Affairs has announced that Serbian citizens will no longer be allowed entry into Medoynia under M-1 temporary refuge status beginning tomorrow. Asylum claims in regards to providing internal conflict as the primary reason will no longer be deemed acceptable and such claims will no longer be accepted when reviewed by the Department of Foreign Affairs.

Current Serbian citizens under M-1 status in Medoynia are advised to apply for Serbian passports as soon as possible in the diplomatic mission designated to handle said applications as the Republic Of Srpska And Herzeg-Bosnia does not have formal diplomatic representation in Menton. Despite this, M-1 status holders will be allowed to remain in Medoynia for the duration of their status validity, 3 years.

"Oh," the President laughs and she shakes the Prime Minister's hand. "This nation would not be here if not for the work of these wondrous people," she says as she points her hand towards the dancers and musical band.
As the welcoming ceremony comes to an end, the dancers wave to the Prime Minister like an old friend.

President Ruiz looks to the Prime Minister once more. "I've arranged a more... scenic route to the Palace," she says, walking towards a brightly-coloured limousine, painted in the style of indigenous bead patterns. "Shall we?" She waves the driver.

After the drive, they arrive at Palaco de Veluara, where security passes them in. President Ruiz exits the limousine, and heads towards the marble white building, constructed in the neoclassical style and adorned with symbols of the Green Revolution. The whole palace is surrounded by a dense field of grass and wild wheat, and naturally fenced off with a quiet, though wide, river. Wild fish splash in the lukewarm waters. In the distance, there is a small agricultural village - the residents of which are beginning to light the fires in their homes, the smoke glowing a dim grey-orange in the low sun. It is nearing 7.00 PM.

One of Ruiz's ministers informs the Prime Minister that it is customary for Meridujoans to eat dinner right after sunset (7/8 PM summers, 5/6 PM winters), and for the guests to stay over the first night.

"Well, I think we both agree on the idea that key sectors such as defense, energy and some portions of transportation shouldn't be part of a first hand treaty. My nation, in its current situation of an archipelago, primarily imports agricultural goods and raw materials. Exempting custom fees on agricultural products would enable you are producers to easily access Nanakian market, and would enable my fellow citizens to have access to competitive price food.

Obviously, this is a proposal favouring Calicambrian businesses : what Nanakian products would you relief of tax ?"

Could nanotech stop coronavirus? Dresden startup says 'yes'.

Since the turning of the decades, coronavirus has been on everyone's radar. Images of the outbreak in the Wuhan province, and recently, the coronavirus' rapid spread into other developed nations have created an aura of fear surrounding the disease.

Nonetheless, Sonovia, a biomedical technology startup from Dresden, promises that its nanotechnology could produce medical masks and equipment that is impregnable to the virus. The company's impressive nanotech mask made headlines at the annual Technology Summit in Dresden when it proved to be fully impenetrable by fungi particles and bacteria. Now, Tzvia Landau - Sonovia's CEO - says that the method making the masks antifungal and antibacterial could aid in the halting of the spread of coronavirus.

"Zinc oxide is a well-known anti-microbial and anti-viral agent," says Landau. "Even small coats of it are able to kill off most microbes present."

Landau believes that the treatment involved - which includes coating the material with nanoparticles of various substances such as zinc, silver, and graphite - could be enhanced for a permanent coating by weaving the nanoparticles into the textile itself through the usage of soundwaves in water.

"By vibrating the water particles on a nano-scale with sound, we are able to 'slot' zinc oxide into the air bubbles within the fabric. Once the air bubbles are popped, the zinc remains woven deep into the fabric."

The enhanced treatment could potentially make the treatment permanent, and maintain its protective qualities for "up to 100 washes."

"Current studies in hospitals show a significant reduction in infections when our protective clothing is worn by the staff."

Sonovia was approved for a ₪4.2 million grant by the Ministry of Health's Department of Innovation to develop the coating for repeated usage and sustainable mass production and distribution.

A few of the ministers nod and smile at Prime Minister's comment. "Perhaps it is a habit we stole from you," one of them jokes, before being slapped on the arm by an accompanying secretary of indigenous looks.

The interior of the Palace was renovated following the revolution in a heavily organic Mediterranean style. The walls of the Palace are stuccoed in rhizomatic patterns, creating the feeling that the walls themselves have veins inside of them, and that the Palace is a living being. Every corridor was altered to have slightly rounded sides and the arches of entranceways are tall, rounded, and adorned with wooden patterns of plants and wildlife. The marble columns holding up the ceiling and various interior balconies and bridges within the Great Hall were specifically designed to resemble bone and cartilage. Paintings depicting Meridujoan nature and historical South American characters and events - most particularly Simón Bolívar and Toussaint Louverture. Socialist realist art is also present, depicting plantation and agricultural workers, images of streets being rebuilt by multicultural communities, and indigenous empowerment.

The group eventually arrives in a large, wide rounded room, with a circular table in the middle, set with fine cutlery, frosted wine glasses, and ceramic coffee cups. Adjacent to the room is the kitchen, as evident by the wide window with wooden flaps. From the kitchen flows out a deeply homely aroma.

President Ruiz and her staff take their seats at the table, already bustling with small talk and discussion as they await their first entrées: vegetable polenta served with a glass of Zweigelt.
