The statement is pulled directly from the map dispatch, though I neglected to add the caveat that followed it "although we do not actually exist in that realm"

To quote it in full since I now see it's necessary for you:

The Western Isles, like many regions, exists in its own separate reality or plane of existence in order for members to reconcile their own histories with each other. We are Earth-based humans with Earth weapons and Earth culture, although we do not exist on the map of Earth itself. Although Earth's countries exist in our reality, we do not typically interact with them nor do they interact with us; we almost exclusively interact with only the nations in our region.

The Western Isles is very roughly 7000 miles long and 4000 miles wide (10 km by 10 km per pixel). We exist in a northern hemisphere, with the nations at the north typically experiencing colder climates and the nations at the south typically experiencing equatorial climates. If it helps, you can picture our map as being the area between Japan, the western American coast, the Aleutian islands, and Hawaii, although we do not actually exist in that realm. Nations are given free reign to decide their inner geography, so long as it does not bend too deep into unrealistic territory. Similarly, nations may decide their own resources or lack thereof, so long as it is kept reasonable and realistic. We are modern time, specifically current time, meaning that the real-life calendar day is the same as our role-play day.

Bold Territories - A Special Type of Role-Play Entity

Information and Guide to the Table Below

Bold territories (marked in bold on the regional map) are essentially NPCs, in the sense that they are used primarily as locations for role-plays that would be too difficult, awkward, or cumbersome to have in one of our nations, and they are not directly controlled by any nation. The idea behind these bold territories is that they perpetually serve to increase the overall degree and flavor of role-play in the region. Major themes with these territories include imperialism and depravity, since often we are reluctant to place our own nations in a disadvantaged position.

Although typically these territories are "run" by one person in the region (i.e. typically the person who comes up with the idea for them, creates factbooks, sets up role-plays, heavily participates in role-plays, and is the contact person for information on them), these territories should be thought of as essentially battlegrounds or loosely-held contestable territories. A major difference between a bold territory and one of our nations is the idea of OOC consent. If I wanted to invade another nation, I would have to ask permission from the other role-player to do so and they would have to agree. If I wanted to invade a bold territory, I would not have to receive permission, but I would face heavy IC resistance. It is in this way that we can raise the stakes and importance of IC alliances. Although no one can destroy your nation without your consent, others can still greatly help or hurt your goal of expanding your influence on the regional scale.

In a perfect world, these bold territories would be permanent and active locations that would have strong, in-depth histories and uses. Ideally, these should not be used for just one role-play and then tossed aside and forgotten about. The goal when creating and using a bold territory is to involve many nations and increase the role-play opportunities with all of our nations. If a bold territory has sat for months with no real activity or is too directly tied to only one nation's role-play(s), it may need to either be shaken up and transformed into a better role-play environment or removed from the map.

Name is the common map name of the bold territory, linked to either a thread or dispatch that has the most information about the territory overall. Typically this will be a dispatch written by the creator of the territory that has updated information about it.

Description is a paragraph of information that should describe the past, present, and likely future of the territory and give a true, honest depiction of what the territory's purpose is.

De Facto Rule is a true answer to the question "Who is in charge?" If the territory is currently undergoing a war, this may be multiple nations or factions. Note that this may differ from the stated or legal rule (de jure). For example, although the International District is legally ruled by a Council, a constant and overwhelming foreign military presence makes the situation more murky than it appears.

Status is a description of what major events or themes are currently occurring in the territory.

Major Nations Involved is a list of nations most actively operating or emitting influence in the territory. The bolded name, listed first, is usually the person who "runs" (see above) the territory and who would be the best person to contact for getting involved with anything involving it.

Notable Links is a list of links to threads or dispatches in which the territory is mentioned or involved. All territories will have a link to "In the News," which will have a chronological list of all mentions of the territory in our regional news thread.

The International District (I.D.)

A neutral, heavily forested chain of islands situated between Argus and Gael, the I.D. is ostensibly "neutral ground" used for regional HQs (including the League & CoFN), treaties, business ventures, recreation, and other gatherings in the centrally located "City." In late 2015, noting growing corruption and lawlessness, a multinational coalition led by Vancouvia occupied the I.D., restored order, and installed a Republican government and police force, the Island Guard. However, a Vancouvian military base remains in the southeastern corner of the island, growing larger with Noronica, Ainslie, Covonant, and other nations building permanent installations.

Keverai

Ever since colonisation in the 16th Century, Keverai has been a place which has turned its eyes out to the Isles at large. It has had a turbulent past ever since it gained its independence in 1931 amidst a moratorium on colonisation and the invasion it soon was subject to in the Imperial War One. In the wake of the war, Keverai sharpened its focus on the Isles at large - significantly deregulating its economy and looking to become a nation deeply integrated in all aspects with the rest of the region. However, the dark side of its former government caused a short revolution which harmed its reputation. Now, the young pragmatic and democratic government is looking to forge a new identity for the nation - one that forces them to confront the deep challenges they face head on.

Lövsk

Lövsk is a rural, cold, and rocky island close to the northern tip of Gael. Most of its 300,000 inhabitants are native Lövskians who mainly live in agricultural-based communities and towns, but a few of them are Osters who migrated to Lövsk following many years of Oster mining, extraction, and production activities on the island. In 2015, following a chain of violent events involving Lövskian insurgents - Ostehaar took control over the island and significantly increaed its economic and military presence there, de-facto turning Lövsk to an Oster protectorate. Since then the island has seen periods of calm and periods of violence, bringing the situation closer and closer to a boiling point.

Arván

The Dominion of Arván was a Noronnican Colony from 1768-1973, gaining uncontested independence due to the Civil War in Noronica. The small peninsula since then became a festering pool of corruption and crime. The populace was subject to both the whims of the regime and the rampant human trafficking system in Arván. Both concerned over the increasing international support of the cartels and terrorists in Arván, and with internal support for the annexation of Arván, the Noronnican Government leaned towards intervention. The final straw came after the attack of Noronnican aircraft over Noronnican airspace by Arvanan fighter jets. Encouraging the construction of a large international coalition and mobilising a large invasion force, Noronica led the invasion and occupation of Arván. Now a Noronnican Overseas State, Arván is being cleared of crime and instability, while also being subjected to the rise of an autocratic Governor. The peninsula is also a hotbed for international espionage operations.

Charbagnian Federation

Throughout history, Charbagnia remained an independent nation, buying off and securing the wealth of nations and empires. It was known for its famed neutrality, maintaining a small but fierce defence. Through a very short war and a treaty, half of the country was annexed by Noronica in 1780. Charbagnia and Noronica maintained cool relations and border disputes were rare. In 1945, the country became whole again after decreased Noronnican imperialism. In the 1950's, Charbagnia underwent a military coup, installing a Soviet Government. With increasing militancy, Charbagnia became aggressive, toting its military might as a force to be reckoned with. The state collapsed in the 1980's and Charbagnia became a Federation, yet its authoritarian routes remained in full-force. Several occurrences of ethnic tensions sparked in the 1990's, with some of the French Minority in Charbagnia protesting against the Government favouritism of those of Germanic descent. Protests lead to violent clashes and soon any mention of dissent towards the German people was enough to land a person in the hands of the State's Secret Police. With the recent protests leading to the use of chemical weapons and the tense League investigation over Charbagnia's Weapons of Mass Destruction programme, the country is in the eyes of the international stage.

The Wake Isles

It has been 19 years since the first major modern war in the Wake Islands, with the nation of Wake Sud slowly recovering from the destruction of that first war over this period of time. It's native allies in the region have been absorbed by their great enemy, Polar Svalbard, which has resonated greatly with the natives all around the Wake Isles and with the ideals that come from Athara Magarat their government and even Svalbardian control in the region is facing great threats. There are the natives, who are becoming more and more hostile when viewing international influences and are becoming more and more emboldened in their resistance movements. There are nations and governments trying to maintain their hold on the region. Additionally, there are also nations trying to support the natives to grow and prosper into an international entity built on the fundamentals many nations hold dear - but yet are met with hostility by the natives. This a story of many end goals, many plots, and many characters, all trying to find their way through this mess in their quest for a unified identity, peace, or power.

Sawneeak Atoll

The Sawneeak Atoll is a disputed group of islands, islets and cays with more than 50 reefs. It lies off the coast of the southern-most tip of Gael in the east of the Western Isles, in the Southern Sea. This small geographical area in the region has often been dubbed by foreign officials as a 'geopolitical nightmare', as several of the region's historical and current political heavyweights have sought to dominate it through the intensive use of claims and military might. As it stands now, the atoll is claimed by various powers and shows no sign of relief. The territory is locked in a constant stand-off, where even the strongest of allies are at each other's necks. Through diplomacy and increasing military presence, the atoll has seen some prosperity for its populations, yet everyone knows that the unofficial ceasefire may not always last. As politics ebbs and flows within the region, tensions can only grow in the atoll.

Yeah it can be a bit difficult to work out what the map essay means in practice. If you're not sure on anything, feel free to ask.

Einnstadt wrote:If TWI used the earth setting. I think I can set my colony on one of these islands.

Yeah you're allowed to be a colony of an earthly nation back in history, provided you are an independent country in the modern day.

Ainslie wrote:Yeah you're allowed to be a colony of an earthly nation back in history, provided you are an independent country in the modern day.

Isnt the point of no return somewhere between the end of WW2/IW1? That being said, is it reasonable to assume cooperation between the different sides of the war in TWI and Earth proper? Especially given that IW1 is basically the TWI-theater of WW2.
EDIT: since IW1 is supposed to end in 1950 is there any chance of maybe letting a little bit of the cold war seep in, as well?

I don't think there's a formal ruling on the cutoff, that's just the convention more or less. So maybe someone could claim they achieved independence in 2020 from Switzerland or something, who's to say?

Updated the Currencies of the world, if anyone would like to provide more information on their nation's currency system, please let me know. Thanks.

How to use: to determine the value of another countries value in your currency then divide your currency's USD value by the other nations USD value (exp. A Norsan is going to do trade in Domanania and wants to convert his Norsan Marks to Dachs. The bank takes the value of the Mark divides it by dach (1.1765/1.25) equals 0.9412 dachs. So if our traveler wants to convert 1000 marks he will get 941 dachs.)
If wanting to find out how foreign money is valued to your currency, divide their currency's value by your on. (exp. The Norsan traveler has 500 dachs left and wants to reconvert it back to marks. the bank divides the value of the dach by the value of the mark (1.25/1.1765) and comes up with 1.0623. To convert the 500 dachs back to marks he gets back 531 marks.)

Nice, although I noticed one error: you accidentally highlighted the +3 in front of WA endorsements as red when it should be green, unless you think that Vancouvia receiving more endorsements is a bad thing.

The Norsan traveler has 500 dachs left and wants to reconvert it back to marks. the bank divides the value of the dach by the value of the mark (1.25/1.1765) and comes up with 1.0623. To convert the 500 dachs back to marks he gets back 531 marks.)

Frasyrland

"He Will Do Mightly Against His Enemies"

Capital: Hinnevale
Population: 1,082,003
Governor: Robert Janstran (F)
Legislature: Frasyrland Assembly (unicameral)
Delegation in Congress: 3 senators; 14 representatives
Founded: 1690 (8th-oldest province)

Main exports:
Glass, cement, gasoline, fish, dairy, cattle, cereal grains

Frasyrland, often abbreviated FY, is the northernmost province in Almorea, the second-largest province by area, and the second-smallest province by population. Containing just under 1.1 million people, who find seafaring work or are employed by basic manufacturing industries, Frasyrland is home to the majority of Almorea's Nyssic community, which first settled the region in the late 17th century. Frasyrland's capital is Hinnevale, a port city of some 350,000 people.

History

Frasyrland was first settled in the 1670s by immigrants from Noronica, and chartered as a colony in 1690. It was dominated by the Clan Frasyr until after Almorean independence in 1763, when the Almorean central government gradually destroyed the clan's power in a conflict culminating with the Battle of Molahchearn. In the 1800s, Frasyrland became the center of the Almorean shipbuilding industry, but was still mostly settled by small farmers. Economic tensions in the province led to violence, such as the Basfall riot of 1890. The province elected the first female member of the Almorean Senate, Euphemia Finlayson, in 1928.

During the Imperial War, Frasyrland became one of the centers of the Almorean free government, following the surrender of most of the country to a coalition led by Athara Magarat. In 1947, large parts of the province were devastated by bombing from the Imperial Powers. Following the war, Frasyrland received extensive federal aid and experienced an economic boom after offshore oil drilling began in the 1970s. In 1981, after the inauguration of Albert Ellsworth as President, Hinnevale was rocked by large anti-socialist riots.

In the 1990s, Frasyrland suffered severe budget crises, forcing the province to borrow hundreds of millions of dollars from banks and the federal government. The province dominated national headlines in 2003, with the impeachment of Governor Charles Pheutan, and after the deadly Wattburn terrorist attack of 2007. Unusually severe snowstorms paralyzed the province in late 2019, and again in early 2021, perhaps owing to rising global temperatures.

Location and demographics

Frasyrland is the northernmost province in Almorea, and is mostly bordered by the Argean Sea, sharing maritime borders with Reathwood and Littolyo. On the south, it is bordered by the Almorean province of Gavshin.

Frasyrland is the least diverse province in Almorea. 64% of Frasyrland's population, just over two-thirds, identifies as "Almorean Nyssic" or "Noronnican Nyssic". The oldest Nyssic clan in the province is the Clan Frasyr, which lent its name to the region in the 17th century. Other prominent families include the Macritchies, Eliots, and Wardlaws, who no longer enjoy political predominance but still retain title to large swathes of land.

The second-largest ethnicity in Frasyrland, according to the 2020 Almorean Census, was "Noronnican English", at 25%, followed by Portuguese, at 7%, and "Other", at 4%.

Most residents of Frasyrland, approximately 70%, are members of the National Church, but far fewer are estimated to actually attend services.

Frasyrland's most densely-populated area is located along its northern coastline with the Argean Sea. Its largest cities are listed below to the left.

Governance

Frasyrland is a self-governing province within the federal structure of the Almorean nation, and enjoys the right to choose its own governor, executive bodies, and provincial legislature.

Frasyrland also elects a delegation to the national Congress. It is automatically entitled to elect 3 members of the Senate, and, as of 2021, its population enables it to elect 14 members of the Chamber of Representatives.

Frasyrland's governor serves a four-year term, with no term limits. He is elected along with a vice governor by the residents of Frasyrland. The governor appoints members of the High Council of Frasyrland, known as secretaries (having once been called high councilors), who take on different portfolios in the government, as in many democracies.

The Frasyrland Assembly, the provincial legislature, is elected by the residents of Frasyrland every two years. It is unicameral, with fifteen electoral districts selecting a total of 97 assembly members.

Frasyrland can cast 20 votes in the Electoral Convention, the body that formally elects the President of the Federal Union, a number calculated from its population according to an 18th-century formula.

The current leaders of Frasyrland's government, and its senators in Congress, are listed below.

The conservative Federal Party has traditionally held sway in Frasyrland. This trend has continued in recent years. In 2018, voters in the province re-elected their popular Federalist governor, Robert Janstran, and in 2020 they returned a Federalist majority to the Frasyrland Assembly, as well as sending many Federalists to Congress.

Governor-designate of Frasyrland
Melanie Finnell
Assuming office February 18, 2021
Out of Frasyrland's 17-member congressional delegation, only 3 representatives and one senator are currently members of the Almorean Party (AMP). The only AMP senator from Frasyrland, Domnhall Wardlaw, is a centrist who largely eschews liberal views, frequently voting against President Alasdair Hallowell in the Senate, and is famous in eastern Frasyrland as a wealthy landowner.

In February 2021, Frasyrland will seat new members of Congress, including Governor Janstran, who was elected to the Senate in the 2020 national elections to fill the seat of Jon Fitzlane, the highly influential Federalist leader, who retired. Once Janstran is sworn into the Senate on February 18, Vice Governor Finnell will become the first female governor of Frasyrland. After serving out the remainder of Janstran's term, Finnell is expected to run for her own full term in the upcoming 2022 gubernatorial election.

Transportation

Frasyrland is bisected by the M3 national highway, which spans Almorea from north to south. Various branches of the M3 highway, including the M7 national highway, Highway 56, Highway 22, and Highway 30 run from northern and eastern Frasyrland to Gavshin, across the Ochiltree Peninsula. The residents of the province are also serviced by various local highways, including Frasyrland Route 2, which runs from east to west, and Route 9, with a terminus in Hinnevale.

The Frasyrland Transportation Authority (FTA) maintains local bus and railway lines, although Frasyrland is mainly serviced by Almorean Rail, the nationalized railway company. There are many industrial freight lines that run through central and southern Frasyrland, mostly in the countryside. The FTA maintains a ferry line from southern Frasyrland to Gavshin.

Hinnevale International Airport, the smallest such airport in Almorea, receives international flights from the Argean and North Mesder regions.

Economy

Frasyrland's economy is based on small-scale agriculture, but the agricultural industry in the province is mostly driven by large fishing enterprises, milk cattle and poultry farms, and industrial slaughterhouses. Many Frasyrland farmers grow oats, barley, and rye, carving out a niche in the commodities sector apart from the massive wheat and maize farms of Roonmore. Fishermen operating out of Hinnevale and other northern ports catch thousands of tons of whitefish, anchovies, crab, and lobster each year.

Frasyrland is also home to cement and glass manufacturing. Almorea's largest cement manufacturer, Tiverton HolSem Inc., is based in Frasyrland, employing over 55,000 people in various factories in the province. Many glassmakers are artisans who resell their product to warehouses, although industrial glass production is carried out by various companies. Barrier Steel Group, a top 45 company on the Ellsburgh Stock Exchange, has several plants in the province.

The Almorean Oil Consortium maintains 16 small refineries in Frasyrland, each employing only around 200 people, mostly to handle overload from the larger refineries in Gavshin. Oil drilling off the coasts of Frasyrland has maintained a steady stream of profit for decades, but offshore oil deposits are currently projected to dry up around 2030.

Frasyrland covers 73,000 square miles in area, making it the second-largest province in Almorea, after Roonmore. It is connected to the province of Gavshin, to the south, by the Ochiltree Peninsula.

Frasyrland is divided into several authority areas, units of local government with policing, zoning, and regulatory powers. Many authority areas operate public utility companies. Each authority area is divided into various counties, usually managed by an elected council. Towns and villages in Frasyrland are governed by open meeting, where all the citizens have a say in the allocation of public funds.

Frasyrland is hilly and mountainous, with deciduous and evergreen forests, and a rainy and snowy climate. Summers are temperate, with an average temperature of 13-15 degrees Celcius (55-60 degrees Farenheit).

The province is home to many species of birds and land wildlife, including the Axis Macula deer and the Milvus Tenebris (Changa) bird of prey. Hunting is very popular in Frasyrland, as are nature tours and all-terrain motorbiking.

Many place names in Frasyrland have Nyssic or Gaelic roots, including the Faiche, the traditional term for central Frasyrland, which is the Nyssic word for "meadow". The name of Hinnevale, the provincial capital, stems from the Nyssic Baile Chinnidh, which can mean "Vale of Determination" or "decision town".

Tallaglen National Park, in central Frasyrland, spans over 180,000 acres. Although most of the park is a protected wilderness area, it is intersected by railway lines. Mount Pinne is the tallest mountain in the province, and the third-tallest in Almorea, standing at 4,101 feet (1,250 meters).

The city of Maverburgh is twinned with Herriden, Wesland, Ainslie. Herriden is 43 times larger than Maverburgh. The town of Murieall, in northern Frasyrland, is twinned with Borva, Nhoor.

Hinnevale is home to the headquarters of the Raedlon Trade Council, an agency of the Raedlon Organization of States.

Sport and Culture

Frasyrland has a team, the Hinnevale Clansmen, in the North Division of the Northern Conference of the Almorean Football League. Since winning the AFL National Championship in 2010, the Clansmen have performed poorly, with a record of 3-9 in their most recent season. Soccer and baseball are also popular in Frasyrland.

The province is famous for its many Nyssic cultural festivals, including the Selburgh May Day Festival, the largest such celebration in the country, where a 60-foot maypole is erected and an estimated 42,000 people gather annually to enjoy meat pies, pastries, and traditional song and dance. The Westland hosts large spring solstice festivals, with bonfires and Christian processions. The National Bards' Festival, organized in Hinnevale each October, is Almorea's largest gathering of Nyssic poets and songwriters.

The Conservatory for Colonial History, located in Hinnevale, is a large museum housing artifacts from Almorea's colonial era. The Haltoun Cineplex in Selburgh is the largest movie theater in northern Almorea, seating over 6,000 occupants.

Crime and judiciary

Under Almorean gun laws, residents of Frasyrland are allowed to own many types of handguns, semi-automatic rifles, and shotguns. Gun ownership in Frasyrland is high, with an estimated 301,000 registered gun owners in the province, about three-tenths of the population. Firearm-related homicides are relatively low, however. In 2019, the last year with complete statistics, only 52 people were killed by firearms in Frasyrland.

Violent crimes and robberies in Frasyrland are relatively low. In 2007, the Wattburn train station bombing, one of the worst Almorean terrorist attacks of the twenty-first century, killed 108 people.

Frasyrland has its own judicial system, subordinate to the Almorean federal judiciary. The supreme judicial body in the province is the Frasyrland High Court, with five members appointed by the governor. This court hears appeals from the ayre courts, which conduct circuits around the province to hear cases in different jurisdictions. Frasyrland is the only province in Almorea that retains the system of ayre sessions. There are also small sheriffs' courts, sitting in county towns, that handle misdemeanors and traffic violations.

The provincial government of Frasyrland maintains several law enforcement agencies, including the Frasyrland Provincial Police Force (FPPF), which supports the provincial courts, hunts fugitives and conducts highway patrol duties, and the Frasyrland Sea Patrol (FSP), which patrols the northern coast of the province.
