Federal Republic of Sylvakia

The Federal Republic of Sylvakia, commonly called Sylvakia, is a semi-presidential parliamentary republic in The Western Isles. It is bordered on the north by Gresswell Island, on the south by Ostehaar, by the east by the Eterna Sea and on the west by San Jimenez. Sylvakia covers 151217 square kilometers and has had an estimated population of 12 million. Sylvakia comprises of 6 federal units and 2 special autonomous areas.

The Federal Republic of Sylvakia is currently recovering from a disastrous civil war that has torn both the political and civil atmosphere. As a result, it does not export much, instead using its resources for reconstruction.

Etymology

The name ''Sylvakia'' comes from one of the early dialects of spoken Sylvaki, meaning ''resilient'' or ''enduring''.

The standard way to refer to a citizen of Sylvakia is as a "Sylvaki."

History

Early civilization

Ever since the inception of the first tribes on Sylvaki land, people realized the harsh conditions that had been presented. Steep climates and the lack of internal water sources within the central regions meant that most tribes who intended to survive had to either move out towards the southern coast or steel themselves to survive the harsh weather. Out of many clashing groups, two came on top: in the south, a civilization of opportunistic and expansive leaders, united in their goal to subjugate smaller states nearby them using their workforces -- and within the north, an isolationist, self-centered and defensive people, whose first goal was survival, and who remained together out of a fear of dying to the fauna surrounding them.

The middle ages

With the expansion of the southern civilization came a time of research and prosperity. The invention of the early Sylvakian language, the discovery of nearby islands and the exploitation of their resources were all great achievements at the time. Standards of living improved drastically for the ruling class, with the apparition of castles and palaces, as well as lavish parties (at some expense to the working class). Meanwhile, within the north, more durable clothing and some very limited farming within fringe regions allowed a wider spread of people, and as a result, more permanent communities in the north.

The war times

In the 18th century, northern groups finally adventured outside of their mountainous regions, discovering the presence of the southern Sylvaki civilization. Although it is unknown who fired the first shots, it is indicated that a large number of skirmishes took place within the border regions between north and south, leading to a military response by the royalty ruling the south at the time. Large deployments of armed troops and cavalrymen had made the ruling class think that the northern threat would be crushed, however, the cold and harsh terrain, which was unprecedented for most southern troops at the time, led to many falling ill or even dying due to the temperatures. Combined with the guerilla nature of northern troops, which had good knowledge of their respective surroundings, led to heavy losses for what should've been an otherwise easy war. Even after managing to subdue the majority of northern cities and their troops, the nobility suffered a great embarrassment, one which would be remembered in the following decades and centuries.

The peasant uprising

Exemplified by the southern-northern war, the incompetence of the nobility often led to the lower classes suffering as a result. This had led to general unrest within the miners, farmers and even infantrymen of Sylvakia. The ideas of shared wealth, rations, land and rights to all Sylvaki citizens were extremely enticing, attracting many from the north, and even from the south, to protest. These unprecedented acts of defiance that were merely peaceful led the rulers to panic and respond with excessive force. The deaths of protestors led from unrest to uprising. As small peasant militias formed up throughout the country, many military units found themselves demoralized or deserting. Capital punishment was implemented for those refusing to fight, which led to even more unrest within the ranks. Bands of peasants took over the mountain villages, the hills, and the farms, crippling the royalty and forcing them into fending off those assaulting the capital. The siege lasted several months, during which heavy damage was inflicted on historical landmarks, such as Svyetalin Royal Army Academy. Finally, with the capture and execution of the Sylvaki nobility, a new age started within Sylvakia.

Sylvakian Socialist Republic -- rise and demise

The Sylvakian Socialist People's Republic, generally referred to as the Sylvakian Socialist Republic, or simply S.S.P.R, was governed by a council of the militia leaders that had originally overtaken the nobility. Many people who had no experience governing now found themselves ruling the country. Despite this oversight, the majority of the population was enthusiastic regarding the regime change. A unifying figure of the revolution, Dmytro Hryhoriy, found himself leading the country as President. Since many of his fellow statesmen were friendly to him, he was able to enact major changes without much opposition. Major agricultural reforms, equal rationing of food, and ''guaranteed'' housing for all those who needed it were some of his feats. While having absurd amounts of power compared to any democratic President, he was widely considered as a benevolent leader, often seen as a guardian of the people. Living standards rose rapidly for the working class, who now no longer had to be afraid of food shortages, or homelessness. A generally overlooked aspect of his rule was the militarization of the country, which he used to provoke fear within the limited resistance that he had.

However, as time progressed, age took toll on the nation's leader, leading to him having to more rely on his advisors, who were no longer militiamen or peasants, but ''representatives'' of interest groups, such as nationalists or southern capitalists, that had gained enough influence to take the position. This led to a slow but noticeable shift from an agricultural economy to one more reliant on minerals and coal. A naval and aerial force were also formed and promoted as highly-paid, highly-respected positions. One long project of Hryhoriy was his trans-mountain railway, which around the late 20th century, started to take form. He would, however, be unable to see it, as a heart attack killed him in the year 1999 at age 91, a few days before New Year's Eve. This led to a crisis within the advisors, who now had to pick a ruler to succeed President Hryhoriy. However, due to the major ideological splits that had taken place, no one was able to agree on a proper ruler. Instead, the solution proposed was to ''pretend'' that the President was still alive, using edited audio footage to make speeches and announcements in his voice.

This charade managed to last for 5 years, until the year 2005, when a pro-democratic northern insurgent group gained the information regarding Hryhroiy's death from a political insider. Initially dismissed as a rumor, photographic and audio evidence backed up the story, and the sudden realization of what happened led to massive chaos within workers and politicians alike. In an emergency and unpopular decision, national socialist advisor Mykhailo Hedeon took over the presidency, using the military force built by Hryhoriy to massively suppress riots. While effective, this brutal strategy led to much resentment from the populace. A secret build-up of insurgent forces within the mountains slowly made plans to overthrow the regime in Svyetalin, raising many supporters all over the country. Meanwhile, Sylvaki military police were given greater authority to arrest suspected rebels. This rise in tension would eventually culminate in a conflict between the government and civil forces.

The Sylvakian Civil War

The event that would spark the brutal civil war that engulfed the country was the bombing of the Perevalivka village. A small settlement whose population barely counts over 500 people, the village became a staging camp for insurgent forces, who were supported by the locals. Sylvaki intelligence detected the concentration of resistance forces there, and, by direct order of President Hedeon, an indiscriminate artillery strike was carried out by the military. Shocked by this atrocity, many citizens took up arms in support of the insurgency, which had now gained the name ''Armiya Vyzvolennya Silʹvaki'' (Sylvaki Liberation Army). However, despite support from the civilian populace, the movement quickly found itself under fire by the army's artillery and even air force bombers. Forced to scatter, many resistance cells found themselves isolated and destroyed, with minimal losses for the military. In an attempt to make a last stand, insurgent forces re-organized and took defensive positions over the industrial town of Luedzina, located in the northern-most region of the country. Government forces took up firing positions from the hills located south of the city, preparing to shell and obliterate the city.

This would prove a major turning point for the resistance, as two divisions were planned to assault the city: one artillery division, and one motorized division. The Major-General leading the second division, however, fell ill during the road over the mountain region. As a result, a younger officer was chosen to lead the assault, the now notorious Brigade-General Victoria Aleksandra, which was promoted to Major-General for the operation. However, secretly, she shared many beliefs with the SLA and wished to support them. Seeing the opportunity to deal a major blow to the military, Major-General Aleksandra ordered her troops to change course and instead flank the artillery division firing on the city. The following crossfire and confusion allowed the SLA to seize onto the opportunity and, along with the motorized division, decimate the artillery units. Following the battle, a televised speech by the Major-General and other resistance leaders proclaimed the founding of the Federal Republic of Sylvakia, and subsequently declared the S.P.R.R as their enemy, advocating for a civilian uprising.

The light nature of rebel forces allowed them to quickly seize ground in the north, taking over the north with little resistance. Entering the southern territories, air force bombings slowed down the offense of the rebels, which were forced to now use urban areas to avoid airstrikes. During this time, residential zones were destroyed by fighting, leading to many families going homeless. Despite the temporary stall, rebel forces managed to take the initiative, attacking SAF Slava -- a major airbase of the government forces. This battle was the last turning point in the war, where two bomber squadrons were destroyed along with the capture of several aerial assets. With no more obstacles on their way, the final advance on the capital took place. The demoralized garrison abandoned their posts or surrendered themselves, leaving only a small group of special forces to protect the government personnel. Despite being greatly outnumbered, they managed to hold the Svyetalin castle for several hours, giving time for President Hedeon and a group of officers close to him to escape rebel capture. However, even with this minor loss, the liberation of Sylvakia was achieved.

The young and torn republic stands crippled, yet ready, to become great again.

Geography

Due to Sylvakia's natural terrain, the nation is (literally) split in two, by the Selumna mountain range. To the south, conditions are more favorable for agriculture and habitation, which is why many major cities are located towards the shore. The center region of the nation is covered in steep hills and mountains, leading the area to be de-populated, besides a few mining and industrial towns that have seen their populations leave due to the war. The northern-most region contains the city of Luedzina, which produces a large amount of coal and minerals for the rest of the country. The military GHQ is also located in the region, meant to honor the major battle that took place nearby.

Most cities are named after words from ancient dialects of Sylvakian, which have since lost their meanings.

Demographics

Population
The Sylvaki people number at around 12 million, mostly concentrated within the south region. Many find themselves within the working or middle class, with very few actually having considerable wealth. Due to the civil war, a considerable number of citizens have emigrated, seeking a better life in other countries.

Language
The modern Sylvaki is a mash-up of several widely used dialects, both from southerners and northerners. As a result, there are some differences between regions, although none are considerably major, allowing for generally clear communication.

Religion
The majority of the people in Sylvakia are some degree of Christian, be it orthodox of catholic. However, a growing portion of the population has become atheist, with the main cause being the civil war. It is to note that most people practice in private and that almost no churches exist in the country.

Race
The majority of the population is Caucasian, however, some can be classed as having Asian descent.

Government

The Federal Republic of Sylvakia is a semi-presidential parliamentary republic, comprised of two houses: the Civil Transition Council of Sylvakia, generally referred to as the Civil Council, and the Sylvaki Citizen's Parliament. Due to the new, infant nature of the republic, the main power is currently held by a council of politicians and specialists, some handpicked and some elected, that is meant to form the democratic system that will guide Sylvakia. The Citizen's Parliament is a group of people only chosen via election to represent the interests of the federal units they reside in, and ensure that the Civil Council does not overstep its powers, a duty shared with the Constitutional Court.

As of now, citizens are able to create political parties, however almost none have been registered due to the chaotic and temporary system that is in place.

Provisional local authorities, mainly formed of militias and worker's unions, govern over their respective lands.

Foreign Relations and Military

For the most part, Sylvakia has maintained an isolationist policy throughout history, however, the end of the civil war has led to a major paradigm shift regarding diplomacy. The Federal Republic is currently working in hiring ambassadors and diplomatic envoys, as well as opening embassies. This is in an attempt to attract foreign aid, NGO's and businesses in order to bolster the nation's economy.

The nation's military is mainly comprised of guerilla forces equipped with socialist-era equipment. Due to the fear of criticism by the populace, the Civil Council and Citizen's Parliament have both refused to fund the modernization of the military. Instead, a less expensive approach of properly training the army and air force, which were mainly militiamen or retired ex-mil's, is being taken to bring up the military to modern tactics and strategies.

Economy

Economic Indicators

Currency: Sylvakian Hroshi (SYH)
Fiscal Year: 1 January - 31 December

GDP (nominal): ~50 billion (counted in dollars)
GDP (nominal) per capita: ~3500 (counted in dollars)
Labor Force: ~11 million
Unemployment: ~8%

The economy of Sylvakia has been more or less crippled by the civil war. This has resulted in low production, hence making the socialist idea of self-sufficiency obsolete. As a result, the nation has been looking to import from other nations, as well as attract businesses to aide the sectors in which Sylvakia is lacking. Although there is some resentment within the populace of the measures taken to welcome foreign corporations, it is generally seen as a necessary evil in order to ensure the stability of the nation.

Culture

The Sylvakian populace has been marked by the years under the S.P.R.R. As a result, due to the ideals of equality promoted by the former regime, issues such as sexism, racism, or any sort of discrimination are rarely seen. Strict rationing has also become a fact of life for citizens, and as such many go by a basis of what they ''need'', and not what they ''want''. However, this is less efficient in the south, and more efficient in the north, due to the lifestyle differences caused by the climate.

One cultural movement that has left a trail took place in the 1950's and 60's, during which President Hryhoriy's popularity was the highest. Many young people would paint the President's eyes onto public buildings and spaces, to signify him watching over the revolution. Some of these remain today, and are generally seen as reminders of a better time.

Infrastructure

Much of the infrastructure of Sylvakia suffered moderate or heavy damage during the war. While the south appears less affected, the shelling of villages and cities in the north is visible even today, and people living in these places often find themselves impoverished or lacking basic necessities.

The grand infrastructural project of the socialist regime, the trans-mountain railway, has also been heavily affected by the war. Even with some parts operational, the fundamental goal of connecting the north with the south hasn't been accomplished yet, with Luedzina having no connection with Svyetalin or other southern cities.

Energy
The majority of the nation's power is fueled by coal due to the lack of development in solar or nuclear power. This has led to major concerns regarding pollution, but both the populace and government appear to ignore these, rather more focused on fixing the immediate damage of the war.

An iconic aircraft of the region has returned:

Alteran Aerospace P.89 Condor
Altera's historic 4th generation V/STOL naval strike and air-defence fighter

Informally referred to as the Condor Jump Jet, is a family of jet fighters capable of
vertical/short takeoff and landing (V/STOL) operations. Originally developed by Jiandān Aircraft Corporation,
the Condor was one of the first fighters in the region to be capable of vertical takeoffs and landings, as well
as supersonic flight. The Condor was exported to many nations across the world in both land and naval-based configurations.
It was conceived to operate from improvised bases, such as car parks or forest clearings, without
requiring large and vulnerable air bases, as well as operating from STOBAR configured
aircraft carriers and assault vessels.

The Condor was developed during the early stages of the 1960s in response to a request from both the Alteran Confederacy's Self Defense Navy and Air Force - both wishing for a supersonic attack aircraft with quick take-off requirements. Whilst the Air Force seemed particularly keen on the idea of a 'tail-sitter' fighter, the Navy knew that this was not feasible as such a craft would be difficult to landing procedures and would probably simply roll off the carrier deck.

Jiandān Aircraft Corporation (now part of the Alteran Aerospace) rose to the challenge and began liaisoning with the dual-national Noronica born aerospace engineer Sydney Hawker, who was working designs for an engine and flight system that would use vectored air to lift aircraft. Inspired by his progress, JAC brought both the engineer and his ideas back to Altera and begun work on the Condor aircraft. JAC proposed a Short/Vertical Take-off and Landing aircraft to solve both the Navy's and Air Force's requests - with an aircraft capable of operating from short/damaged runways by utilising its short take-off capabilities and taking off vertically from carrier/ship aircraft decks. When first proposed, the Naval establishment was not keen on the idea - as the use of a vertical take-off naval fighter in combat was untested - with many senior officers considering the prospect a joke and impractical. Nevertheless, the enthusiastic government pursued purchasing the aircraft for the air force - much to the navy's dismay. However, by the mid-1970s, the Condor had proven itself in combat in many theatres of war around the region - showing itself to be capable of taking on many of the current top-of-the-line fighters in its day.

As a S/VTOL attack aircraft, the role of the Condor was vast and covered many different duties - though its main purpose was to be able to take off from short, damaged or improvised airstrips. It was envisioned that the Condor could even operate in woodland clearings and domestic roads, giving pilots and crews much greater flexibility in the choice of operating bases. At the time, there was a real concern that a strike from Athara magarat would put airfields out of action - though this fear bared little ground in reality. This vision was popular with many nations; either seeking an aircraft they could operate even after the airbase was destroyed from damaged airfields, remote and improvised bases or short aircraft carrier decks and helicopter pads.

With a S/VTOL aircraft that promised to exceed Mach 1, the Condor promised to rival and indeed complement forces operating subsonic S/VTOL aircraft, using its supersonic capabilities to intercept and take on a range of land-based supersonic aircraft. To achieve these supersonic speeds, the Condor would employ plenum chamber burning (PCB) – essentially an afterburner in the previously cold forward nozzles – in the engine. The engine chosen was a Rowlands 'Spithelm' turbofan engine, featuring four swivelling exhaust nozzles. The front nozzles were equipped with PCB, which uses the same principle as an afterburner, allowing the aircraft to theoretically reach speeds of Mach 1.7–2 at altitude.

Despite several promised upgrades, the Condors were withdrawn from Alteran service several years after the introduction of the P.125 Osprey fighter, though still serves in some nations today.

Development

During the late 1950s, Jiandān Aircraft Corporation (JAC) was keen to develop a new generation of combat aircraft that would be capable of supersonic speeds. Recognising the need to promptly commence work on such a development program, JSA decided that the company should investigate the prospects of developing and manufacturing a viable combat-capable vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) fighter aircraft.

Rowlands-Electric Engines (now Rowlands) had already been working on a project to produce a suitable VTOL engine; this engine combined major elements of their previous jet engines designs to produce a directable fan jet. The projected fan jet harnessed rotatable cold jets which were positioned on either side of the compressor along with a 'hot' jet which was directed via a conventional central tailpipe. With a suitable engine already being developed, JAS proceeded to develop the company's first VTOL aircraft, designated as the Condor P.89. Early in the program, Noronica-born Sydney Hawker was brought onto the project to work on the airframe and overall design of the Condor. The P.89 was developed as a subsonic VTOL-capable strike aircraft, while also serving to demonstrate and prove the capabilities of the aircraft's basic configuration and to validate the performance of the Rowlands-Electric 'Spithelm' engine that powered it.

While financial backing was issued by a joint Alteran republics and Noronica Mutual Weapons Development Program to support the development of the Spithelm engine, the Alteran government, at first, were not forthcoming with funding. While JAS chose to go ahead with the P.89 as a private venture, the Air Staff disagreed heavily over what requirements should be set out for a future ASDF VTOL aircraft; some officers advocated simplicity while others, such as the AADF operational requirements division, sought various performance demands of such an aircraft, particularly the capacity for supersonic flight. JAS was also interested in the prospects and feasibility of a more sophisticated development of the P.89, knowing that a supersonic-capable version of the VTOL aircraft would likely be more attractive to customers, there being a general perception at the time that supersonic aircraft held significantly more value their subsonic counterparts.

Consequently, on 13 April 1961, JAC decided to conduct preliminary work on a supersonic derivative of the P.89 under the guidance of Sydney Hawker. This would result in a new design, which was 50% larger than the preceding design; it was proposed that a new performance-enhancing feature be adopted in the form of the plenum chamber burning (PCB) – essentially an afterburner – in the engine. The new proposal broadly resembled its predecessor despite major changes being made, including its revised fuselage, the adoption of a thinner wing, and an advanced version of the Spithelm engine. Upon testing, the engine was theorised to be to produce speeds of Mach 1.3.

Design

The Condor is a supersonic aircraft designed to fill strike, reconnaissance and fighter roles. It features a single Rowlands-Electric Spithelm turbofan engine with two intakes and four vectorable nozzles. It has two landing gear on the fuselage and two outrigger landing gear on the wings. The Condor is equipped with four wing and three fuselage pylons for carrying weapons and external fuel tanks, though later variants would see six wing pylons and a further two pylons added to the fuselage. Use of the ski jump allowed the aircraft to take off from a short flight deck with a heavier loadout than otherwise possible, although it can also take off like a conventional loaded fighter without thrust vectoring from a normal airport runway.

The Condor featured the Black Hound radar, which was described as one of the most advanced pulse doppler radar systems in the world; the early planned use of the Black Fox radar was seen by some critics as having a comparatively low performance for what was available at the time of procurement. The Black Hound formed the basis for the development of the P.117 Pochard's CAPTOR radar. The Condor also carried the JAMM-ER missile, the first Alteran aircraft to be provided with this capability. An upgraded model of the Rowlands-Electric engine, the Spithelm Mk 160, was used in the later versions of the Condor; in response to the threat of radar-based anti-aircraft weapons, electronic countermeasures were added. Other improvements included an increase to the air-to-air weapons load, look-down radar, increased range, and improved cockpit displays.

The cockpit in the Condor includes a conventional centre stick arrangement and left-hand throttle. In addition to normal flight controls, the Condor has a lever for controlling the direction of the four vectorable nozzles. The nozzles point rearward with the lever in the forward position for horizontal flight. With the lever back, the nozzles point downward for vertical takeoff or landing. The usefulness of the vertical landing capability of the Condor was demonstrated in an incident on 6 June 1983, when a lone Condor lost contact with the aircraft carrier mothership and had to land on the foredeck of the Miklania registered cargo ship.

In 1998, Alteran Aerospace tested a series small underwing compartments intended to be used for deployment of special forces. Each pod was to contain a single equipped marine or special forces operative. Equally, the same pods were tested as evac-pods - to allow for the extraction of troops or VIPs from confined or remote positions. Alteran Aerospace has continued to deny every manufacturing such pods for deployment with the ADF.

In 2005, although already timetabled to be retired, a Condor was modified with an 'Autoland' system to allow the fighter to perform a safe vertical landing without any pilot interaction. Despite the pitching of a ship posing a natural problem, the system was designed to be aware of such data, and successfully performed a landing at sea in May 2005. This autoland system was implemented in the last variants of the Condor: the GR.6 and FRS.4.

Rotating the vectored thrust nozzles into a forward-facing position during normal flight is called vectoring in forwarding flight, or "VIFFing". This is a dogfighting tactic, allowing for more sudden braking and higher turn rates. Braking could cause a chasing aircraft to overshoot and present itself as a target for the Condor it was chasing, a combat technique formally developed by the Alteran republics AADF Condor pilots in the 1970s.

Variants

JAS P.89 Condor Mk.I (1964)

First production aircraft - merely a development batch V/STOL ground attack and reconnaissance aircraft.

JAS P.89 Condor GR.1 (1968 - 1972)

Deployed variant to Alteran Republics as V/STOL ground attack and reconnaissance aircraft.

AAe P.89 Condor GR.2 (1974 - 1975)

AAe P.89 Condor GR.3 (1982 - 1987)

Modified variant equipped with built-in with Laser Rangefinder and Marked Target Seeker (LRMTS). Aircraft mainly converted and re-engined GR.1/2, though newly build for new Alteran squadrons and overseas exports.

AAe P.89 Condor GR.4 (1990 - 1994)

Condor GR.3 development with Forward Looking Infrared (FLIR) Night Vision Gear (NVG) for night/poor weather attack. Aircraft newly built or conversions of GR.3 platform.

AAe P.89 Condor GR.5 (2003 - 2009)

Condor GR.4 development with enhanced weapons capability and updated avionics (converted from GR.4). Retrofitted to include latest GPS avionics and platform for future implemented weapon systems.

AAe P.89 Condor GR.6 (2006 - 2012)

Condor GR.5 development with updated digital displays and new "auto-land" system, to allow for the easier and automated landing of aircraft - even on high-pitching vessels.

AAe P.95 Condor II Prototype (2015)

Development of the GR.6, the P.95 Condor II was a whole new design, based upon the GR.6, that incorporated 'stealth' attributes. Leading from the P.109 Vulture, the Condor II was planned to take over the role of the Condor in 2019 - however, this design was overshadowed and eventually lost out to the P.125 Osprey.

JAS P.89 Condor T.2 (1964)

Two Seat V/STOL ground attack and reconnaissance trainer. Based upon converted and unused Mk.I aircraft.

JAS/AAe P.89 Condor T.2N (1973 - 81)

Two Seat V/STOL ground attack and reconnaissance trainer - naval variant. Featured CATOBAR capability and improved engine lifted from unsold GR.2 aircraft.

AAE P.89 Condor T.3 (1989)

Two Seat V/STOL 'fly by wire' technology demonstrator with 'Vectored thrust Advanced Aircraft flight Control' (VAAC) system. Limited production run. Currently operated by Alteran Aerospace as a technology demonstrator.
