It's, by many different measures, the worst state in the union, so I think in the interest of the other 49 we should take this opportunity to bolster our averages

We should prototype that technology in southern California first.

Shidei wrote:When do we carve out Mississippi and float it off into the Gulf

someone should check in on the Mississippi River Delta and make sure this hasn't happened already

Miklania wrote:We should prototype that technology in southern California first.

Nah. Test it out on the hicks first. The "Influencers" wont provide any useful information on how to improve the technology because they'd have a mental breakdown the second they dropped internet connection or their Starbucks fell into the Pacific

Fair enough. So long as we get to do both.

You obviously haven’t seen Michigan

I saw upstate New York once, from a distance.

My family has people we visit occasionally in the UP. Great place, highly recommend visiting in fall after the tourists are gone and it's not 4 ft of snow yet

Pretty sure Michigan's state flower is the pothole

Other than that, though, it's not too bad

The UP is probably the only good part, and Detroit towers over everything as the Icon of disappointment and poverty.

Cleveland: at least we aren’t Detroit

Me from the Canadian side of the Niagara Falls. I wasn't very mobile at the time as I was walking on crutches due to the breaking of an ankle.

We tried that 150 years ago and you wouldn’t let us, see even today people all over think the South should have seceded.

You got greedy and wanted too much

It's like when someone else brings a tray of brownies to a potluck. People are going to object if you take the entire pan with with you (for obvious reasons) back to your table, but if you just take one at a time and spread it out over the course of the event, you could get away with a lot for a lot less scrutiny.

And it's not that I want to get rid of the whole south (y'all have the comfort food thing nailed), just certain parts. Like removing old and crusty used-to-be-white carpet from your bathroom and replacing it with a sensible linoleum.

The UP is rightful Wisconsin territory. That's why it's so much better than the rest of Michigan

They can’t have Toledo because it’s too good for Michigan.

Separatism is rad

Last weekend's Irish elections seem to have caused a stalemate with Sinn Fein so far ending up with 37/160 seats, Fianna Fail with 36, Fine Gael with 35, independents 21, Greens 12, Labour 6, Socialdemocrats 6, mixed centre-leftist party combination 5. FF and FG are rightist; SF, Green, Labour, SocDems, mixed centre-leftist stuff are leftist; the independents are the Gods know what.

SF, FF, and the Greens all have green as their party colours and I predict that those three will make the least unstable coalition, but I fear that it won't be easy to be green (to quote Kermit the Frog). If Mary-Lou McDonald (SF) plays it smoothly, she may end up being the first woman Taoiseach (pronounce e.g. TEA-shukh, /ˈt̪ˠiːʃəx/; Prime Minister) of Ireland.

Little bit concerned that SF being the governing party could lead to rising sectarian tensions, especially in the North. But they're the biggest party in the Dail, so there isn't really a way to make a government without them.

Plus, I seem to remember FF ruled out negotiations with SF.

The South sucks but because its rightfully American it will never be able to leave. As much as you guys want to champion "States rights" it was "States rights to own slaves". Sorry but the people who literally owned people, are the bad guys of the story.

If FF keeps ruling out SF a coalition my be much more difficult to form. And as for the sectarian tension: I think that is more or less the point, with allegedly many Irelanders favoring unification with the north after Brexit. Whether that will work at all remains to be seen.

FF got one seat more than SF in the end btw.

I just saw an article calling California the "first Third World state in the union"
not saying we don't have our issues but I mean come on

That’s a funny way to spell Michigan

What's a nice nation like you doing in a place like this? Has someone ever told you that you have beautiful stars in your flag? 😉

That’s funny, and yeah probably not the whole state but there’s probably also a kernel of truth for some parts. I’ve heard horror stories of crap, condoms, trash, and needles in the streets of some areas in San Francisco and LA. Same for Eureka (some relatives live up near there).

EDIT: I am in CA, but haven’t hardly been to LA, and not been to SF very recently. I do remember seeing a whole homeless encampment by an exit in SF a few years ago though. So that’s what I’ve been hearing.

There's a part of every state like that more or less. I mean, Louisiana has a higher infant morality rate than Iraq
