(I sometimes wonder what went wrong between generations of my family; both my grandfather and my father (and several other family members of previous generations) were officers in the Dutch army but that tradition seems to have died with me so profoundly that for a long time I barely acknowledged the existence of armies...)

I know the feeling. My father and grandfather both were paratroopers in the Indian army. My dad is now a security officer in the US embassy in Afghanistan while grandfather still has tales of Indo-Pakistani wars he was involved in.
The rest of my family is full of Indian and British Gurkhas. Then there's that cousin who is a major in the Nepal Army who is always travelling to Sri Lanka or Russia or somewhere in Europe. Not to mention all those friends who are new British recruits now or applying.
But me: never had any interest in army. Then again, I wear glasses and am a real midget.

I don't even want to risk tainting my search history by looking that up ...
Dead Cells: The combat in that game is really satisfying, to the point that that the usual things that put me off most rogue-likes I either don't care about or actively enjoy in that game; still some luck involved in each run, but bad luck can be counter by sufficient levels of git gud.
Slay the Spire: Same idea in terms of the rouge-like mechanics, as everything is tied together by a really good deck builder game.
Pyre: I don't like sports games, and I generally don't like visual novels. Pyre is both of those things; I adore Pyre, so Supergiant is keeping up their track record of making gold (as a side-note, Bastion and Transistor could also be worth checking out if you don't have them).
ICEY: 2D Hack & Slash game with a strong meta-narrative. I really enjoyed my time with it. I'd recommend turning the voice acting to Mandarin in the settings (It got an English narration after release, and I find its quality to be lower than the original).
Hollow Knight: Metroidvania with great combat; can't recommend it highly enough.
OneShot: Nice little narrative experience. Go into it blind.
Wizard of Legend: Rouge-like. Luck factors more on each run than Dead Cells I find, but the combat is once again satisfying.
Frozen Synapse: An older one, but good. Simultaneous-turn-based tactics game. Multiplayer is pretty dead, but it's inherently play-by-post in nature so if you can get a game going it's probably going to get finished, even if it takes a few days to do so. Buying one copy gets you another to give to a friend. Has a sequel as well which might be worth checking out, but I haven't played it so I can't comment on its quality.
Tooth and Tail: Fun little RTS game.
EYE: Divine Cybermancy: A very... strange FPS from 2011. Might be worth checking out.
Death's Gambit: Metroidvania souls-like; a good pick-up if you happen to like the souls-like genre.
Salt & Sanctuary: 2D Dark Souls; it's blatant and shameless in this, but the execution is good so I recommend.
Copy Kitty: A surprisingly good 2D platformer/shooter; it could use some love.
Genegorge: CRPG released in 2001; I haven't beaten it, but I've enjoyed what I've played. If you can handle some of the quirks and annoyances that come with old games, it's a good pickup. Only sold as a series, so $20 for all five games at base price.
Valdis Story: Abyssal City: A very good metroidvania with a large amount of content for the price.
Just off the top of my head.
It's a platformer; an excellent one if reviewers are to be believed (over 95% positive ratings, total and recent, which is rare to see on a game)
Saw it in my recommendations a while back; straight platforming usually isn't my thing, but I might pick it up someday.
