Thats what I've been trying to say. It's an economic system that nobody wants, but you're kinda forgetting that the Southern aristocracy was RUTHLESS. They held almost all political power in the Antebellum South, and would continue to after a Southern victory. As long as they keep making money, which they are by the skin of their hair, they will not give up slavery. It will take a combined diplomatic effort and a complete upheaval in the South's class system and economic conditions to get rid of slavery in an empire built of the abuse and mistreatment of human beings.
