But it isn't self-policing. Not from their perspective. From their perspective you're doing something bad. You're having bad thoughts. Thinking evil things.

Exactly. But many religions demand abstinence rather than self-control.
I like to think we're slowly rising above the need for a god. Very slowly. We'll get there.

Oh come now. Even Christianity is slowly becoming better than it was. Think about it. No more witch hunts or human sacrifices. Religion is evolving. A bit more slowly than much of humanity, but it's making small, incremental progress. Eventually, I think all god-fearing religions will move towards something better than its rigid rules.

Oh, but it is! Much like Islam, god loves you, but you're not free from his wrath either. Just one slip up and you better pray for forgiveness or it's fire and flames for you.
Oh, but there was! Burning one sinner at the stake so the rest of the village won't face the wrath of god? Sounds like a human sacrifice to me.

Oh no no no, we use the bible in our discussions about Christianity. If outside sources are allowed, than we must consider that there have been originally Christian cults which legitimately practiced human sacrifice, and so on.
It'd be like selectively quoting the Talmud to try and show that "Judaism allows for child murder"
That just makes two dead people. No one should be punished for their actions; they should be rehabilitated. If that is not possible, than they should be killed.

That doesn't justify killing someone for not believing in god, disagreeing with the church, etc.
So lemme get this straight: are you defending witch hunts and human sacrifice? :P
